Castello in Mendip

We went there mid week, and the restaurant was buzzing. The food was amazing. And, the waiters were so friendly and attentive. The place itself was very nice, and located in the cobbled area of Frome. And, the prices were very reasonable.

I just had to respond to the review in August titled “mean mean mean.” If this person is quoting he can cook a penne for 80p and run a restaurant. What’s he doing in Frome? Also the spelling is atrocious he talks about an owl but he really means a bowl. Ignorance at its finest. I’ve been coming to this restaurant for over 11 years since it opened actually. I don’t need to be biased in my views because I’ve never had a single mediocre meal here. Castellos atmosphere and welcoming environment is absolutely stunning and noted by all who come here. The food is consistently perfect, either going out for a quick pizza and a glass of wine or a family blow out which we often do has never disappointed. It’s perfect for families, celebrations and just going out for an 80p bowl of penne!

Arrived late pm in Frome on route to the Cheese and Grain for a concert and headed straight for Castello on the back of previous reviews, and keen for a quick bit of Italy in advance. Blundered in at about 17.30 and the place was quiet but well laid out, and we were immediately welcomed (first welcome) by one of the waiters who asked politely if we had a reservation? 'No' I replied 'table for two?', and he said 'no problem' and showed us to a corner table for two...menus already on the table. Not long after, another waiter arrived to take our order - they're all very efficient and 'tidy' as my other half said (I'll assume that their clothing?) - and before long a bottle of Rose arrived, as did rosemary bread with mozzarella (lots of both) and a bowl of mixed olives, as nibbles before the main course (second welcome). What had been a slightly quiet restaurant was starting to burst into life as guests started arriving and a general hubbub was emerging. 'This place is popular' I thought. Interestingly, and to also be welcomed (4th maybe?), is that they have a bar person permanently serving drinks and coffee's to the waiters so there was no wait time for either - impressed. The mains arrived! Third welcome (?) to a huge Greek salad and a Tagliatelle Rosso with a lot of parmesan as required - both of which looked and tasted amazing - really well prepared. The coffee's were equally good. By the time we left at 18.45 we were: a) impressed, b) slightly annoyed we couldn't stay longer c) thinking of moving to Frome, & d) still laughing at our little chat whilst paying the bill! (you had to be there!) which was a lot of fun. So, in summary: great staff, great service great food, and great VFM. What else is there? PS. As we left, there was a queue of people arriving most of whom had booked....says it all.

Service was second to none. Tegamaccio is a must to buy and absolutely worth every penny!

Unlike the nearby hotel/pub I stayed at this restaurant exceeded my expectations. I was only in town one night and travelling alone which is always a bit awkward. Nevertheless the staff made me feel welcome and were friendly and attentive and the pizza was delicious. One of the best I’ve had in a long time - vegetarian, crispy and perfectly cooked and with the addition of good quality chilli oil I was blown away. Thank you!

Appalling - Avoid! - Food poisoning: spent all night vomiting and diarrhoea. Throbbing headache today. All family unwell. - Service: Gave away our reservation; had to wait half an hour for table. Had to call restaurant from mobile phone to get drink and later bill because very poor waiting staff.

I had the Tropicana and it was hands down the nicest pizza I have ever had. The service was excellent and very fast considering how busy they were

Excellent service, flavoursome food, lovely atmosphere. We hadn’t booked as thought might be quiet on a Tuesday night. On arrival the restaurant was very busy but we were very lucky to get a table. The staff here really work hard and even though they were extremely busy the service was still spot on. The food is always amazing and exactly as you requested.

You must try the Panna cotta it was amazing even though is 7 quid it was worth every single penny you have to try this restaurant

If you want a quick bowl of expensive pasta then head on in because this is what they do here. My penne with chicken and mushroom was more like a game of 'hunt the chicken': every piece had been cut to about a 10mm x 5mm slice. Ditto for the mushrooms, very few and far between. And this for a owl that cost £16.95. My wife, an experienced cook estimated the cost of the ingredients at less than 80-pence. The three other dishes o the table were equally disappointing. This is Rip-Off Britain at it's worst.

Mark Bruce Company ran a Summer School for Vocational Dance Students during which time we booked all 19 to eat one evening last week. The staff were amazing checking the pre orders beforehand. Extremely welcoming, the students reported a great evening, food and atmosphere so enjoyable. Thanks Costello team, we'll be back next year!

Great food, lovely kind waiters. Pizza is to die for ❤️😋 Also have an open kitchen so you can watch food being made, plus very clean toilets! Definitely worth a visit. Only complaint is prices - very expensive and there may be better options.

Ordered a pasta dish with muscles in, which has multiple rancid smelling muscles in. One of which I ate (yet to see if I get food poisoning) after being berated by rude server and not aloud to talk. The manager then said well that's the risk you take eating sea food, you might get food poisoning. Which is an insane answer coming from a supposid nice restaurant. Terrible experience over all, clearly just rely on tourists as no local would want to deal with there terrible food and service!

The mussels were off and the manager said " if you order seafood you take the risk of food poisoning" l can not believe how rude he was too. Terrible food Terrible service. This was a treat to go out with my son , it was so upsetting.The people on the table behind us also had a bad muscle. They did not care the food was off and could give you food poisoning Waste of our hard earned money and treated like criminals.

With just one night in Frome, we chose this very promising-looking Italian restaurant, and it exceeded expectations. The meatball starter was particularly good, but everything was fresh and well seasoned. The pasta we all had was terrific - very tasty, perfectly cooked - and their sauces were full of flavour and personality. The ambience was happy— we were glad we booked, it got very busy. Thank you to Andrew our server with patience and humour. What a lovely surprise this was. We will surely return.

Visited 17/05/24 - Fantastic Italian restaurant with really nice food and great service. We found this last minute and they took our reservation. The service was great and they are family friendly, we took a baby and they customised the food for her with less seasoning. All of the food tasted great and was good value for money.

We had meal with family and it was amazing absolutely wonderful food, service was excellent and friendly,atmosphere amazing 👏 😋 👌 love to visit again

Lovely Italian in the heart of Frome. Service was warm and friendly, they couldn’t do enough for us. Menu selection was fantastic and every plate that left the kitchen looked amazing. I had the arabiata which was gorgeous, my only gripe was that it was a very small portion for the price. The calzones on the other hand are huge! Would recommend!

Had a meal on a Tuesday evening, not the busiest but had a good atmosphere. Food was very good typical Italian. Would recommend it.

Food of a very good quality, arrived quickly, very hot and very tasty. Drink choice just as good with a wide variety for all. Service outstanding, friendly and funny server, very prompt and an all round happy chap.

I can’t even begin to explain how special castellos made our evening. My partner and I were in bath for a few nights to celebrate him coming home from a long time away with work and he ended up proposing! He booked castellos as it looked beautiful online and the menu looked delicious and it really was! Their service was absolutely incredible and they made sure to have a chilled bottle of champagne ready for when we walked in. Thank you so much for your amazing food and incredible service! Even though we live far we will 100% coming back!!

Looking for a decent place to eat in Frome? Highly recommend this wonderful Italian restaurant. We turned up without a booking, but even though the place was very busy, we had no trouble getting a table.( Has a large second floor). The staff are very welcoming and the food arrived really quickly. The quality was exceptional.

Very disappointed with the fact we where told the bar was closing at 9 pm if we wanted more drinks, constantly harassed by staff to pay the bill between 9-955 pm asking us to leave as they where trying to save on heating and lighting. One member of staff flounced out slamming the door eventually left at 9.55 feeling uncomfortable to even finish our drinks . After visiting this restaurant on a regular basis for over 10 years will be reluctant to ever return

My husband and I stumbled across this place and were very glad for it. Seems on a Sunday in Frome there are few places to eat if you are looking for a few salads or healthier options. After finding a few cafés serving sandwiches and pies we found this Italian place and had a lovely lunch. The place was nice and clean, the service was good and the food was excellent woth lots of choice on the menu. We would return here and happily recommend it.

The food here is absolutely superb, especially the pollo Milanese and the salmon. The tomato sauce in particular was very fresh and delicious. We just about had room for dessert and went for the banoffee pie and tiramisu, both of which were excellent. The service was also great - it was a busy Saturday night when we attended but they found us a table quickly and staff were attentive throughout our visit. Will definitely stop by again next time we're in the area!

We were three couples for dinner. Good ambiance and busy on a Saturday night. Started with cocktails - OK but 'The Godfather' was fairly weak compared to others I've had before. All starters good and enjoyed my Portobello mushroom. Aglio (garlic and rosemary bread) also very good. Diavlo pizza reported as tasty. I had the Risotto (Fruitti Di Mare) which was, unfortunately, very bland. There was NO seasoning, which I added myself. Quantity of mussels and shrimp distinctly lacking. One of the ladies had the Risotto Verdure and reported the same blandness and lack of seasoning. Calzone Piccanto reported as slightly below expectations but OK. Other dishes and desserts reported as good. On balance would return.

Not too busy 3 nights before Christmas. Great food, shown by 4 empty plates! The carne toscana pizza was lovely, thin base, nice and light, not hard and very tasty. The aglio mozzarella starter was also very tasty. Will definitely come again when in Frome of an evening.

I had linguine with shellfish and it was delicious 😋😋 Very nice staff and I'd highly recommend it for everyone.

We held our annual works Christmas doo here last Friday. The food and service were impeccable and there was a lovely atmosphere in the restaurant. Amazing and highly recommended.

We went to this buzzing, vibrant restaurant for our Christmas work do. Despite how busy they were, the service was spot on. There was always someone on hand ready to top up our drinks and get us more. The food was lovely and came to us all at more or less the same time, which is not an easy things when you have 30+ people to cater for. The atmosphere was my favourite thing though and my mates Diabolo pizza! Really great place .

We wondered upon this lively and lovely Italian restaurant as we hunted out something to eat on a Sunday evening. This place was full and rightly so! The staff were friendly and professional quickly leading us to what looked like the only free table. Food and wine ordered, all great, tasty and filling. I gad the meatballs which were OK however the seafood linguine was excellent.

We tried the pub across the road and walked out.this restaurant was a life saver,very good food .clean well lit.staff great.

Arrived in Frome late evening. Castello looked busy but the staff kindly squeezed us in. Meals were delicious, waiter was fantastic. Catered for our young daughter as they provide all menu choices as child size portions too. Highly recommend.

We went as a group. We didn’t enjoy the food, service was fine. The restaurant has a good atmosphere, the staff are good and they did a good job but none of us enjoyed the food. The Italian food was far from what it should have been. I guess the food tried to cater for a wide range of client but I wouldn’t say it’s traditional Italian food.

Pleasant place simple and enjoyable

We booked a table for two last minute and we’re so glad we did. The starter of goats cheese was delicious, really tasty. We both chose the special of lasagne which was clearly freshly made and really tasty. The staff were friendly and the atmosphere in the restaurant was buzzing.

We came across this wonderful restaurant by chance when visiting Frome for the Frome Independent street market, having failed to find anywhere for lunch nearer to the centre. We were given a friendly welcome, and the service throughout was efficient, courteous and very professional. The meals we had were exceptionally good; my Ossaboca was one of the best dishes I've had in a restaurant in a long time. Very fair pricing for the quality and quantity, and the overall experience was exceptional. I've only given 4 stars for Atmosphere as it was, rather surprisingly, quite quiet when we were there. I'm sure that when it is busier the atmosphere would merit 5 stars. A shame we're not from the area; otherwise it would become a regular favourite restaurant.

Nice modern decor. Friendly staff. Good choice of pasta, pizza and other Italian standards. Our pizzas were very tasty and generously topped. There looked to be quite a few 'regulars' in which is always a good sign.

My meal was very average, chicken with Palma ham, gratin potatoes, a jus and leaves. The chicken was cooked well but the jus was like a thick gravy. The gratin potatoes were poor, couldn’t taste any cheese, runny ‘sauce’. The leaves were a bit of lettuce. Very disappointing.

Excellent food and service. We had appetisers, pizza and desserts. Portions are reasonable but not too big.

Yet another fabulous meal at Castello’s in Frome, this time celebrating our daughters 21st Birthday. The food was outstanding as always, and the service from Gent and the team was second to none - a warm welcome, attentive throughout, and lots of special personal touches to put the icing on the cake of a big family occasion. Castello’s is an absolute gem in the centre of Frome - we will certainly be going back time and time again.

Quality munch. But best of all, the customer service. Our waiter had us laughing all night. Loveliest guy and really went the extra mile with his service. Great experience would definitely come again.

We enjoyed a very good meal here. The restaurant was very busy when we visited on a Thursday and we were fortunate to get a table as we hadn't booked. The atmosphere was lively but not so noisy that we couldn't converse comfortably. We were on holiday when we visited but this is obviously a popular dining establishment with locals. If you enjoy Italian food then I would recommend Castello Restaurant.

A really lovely authentic Italian experience. The restaurant is absolutely stunning, really beautiful, clean and cosy. The staff were really friendly and very professional. The food was really yummy, my partner had the calamari to start and I had the bruschetta with goats cheese and it was really tasty, the goats cheese was a really unique take. We both had a pizza for our main, really tasty, full of flavour and you can tell the chefs love to cook, it shows through the quality of the food. If we are in Frome again we will definitely re visit as their pasta dishes loved devine and we want to try so many more things. It’s a lovely restaurant for all ages and all occasions.

I have eaten here many times over the years with my work colleagues and have always had a good meal. The restaurant is a good size, with more seating on a 2nd floor (which we prefer). The staff are always very friendly and professional and the food is good. I haven’t had a bad meal here yet!

Been to Castellos many times. Decided to go last night without booking! Couldn’t quite believe how busy it was midweek! Jay managed to find us a table and as ever we were attended to immediately. The food was a good as always. Jay and all his staff are always attentive to all their customers old and new. This is a restaurant that should definitely be visited if you are in Frome.

If you're in Frome you need to pay Castello restaurant a visit. We were there for a girlie weekend (8 of us) and had a great circular table which was really sociable. The food and the staff were impeccable from the moment we arrived until the moment we left. Everyone was super impressed with every course and it was very good value for the quality. The food was mouthwateringly great! I have to say never normally pick pizza on a menu as I don't personally get the hype but I thought, hey you're in an Italian restaurant give it a go! OMG! It was amazing, the Contadina, I highly recommend it! The staff were super friendly and helpful especially as one of our group has serious food allergies so they made sure she was well looked after. Will definitely be rebooking on my next trip to Frome! A pure gem!

My first time here but it made a good impression, I really don't like expensive busy places but this was an exception. The food was fantastic, main and dessert just wonderful but most importantly the staff all were top notch folks, especially our server, a Romanian gent who beats Fred Sirieix hands down, would go back just for his friendly and charming hosting and amazing ability to manage the floor!

Packed on a Thursday, always a good sign. Food was excellent, fresh and piping hot! The flavours superb, the waiting staff know their business especially when it comes to gluten and dairy free options. So happy we came back, and will be back for more

This is an excellent restaurant worth a visit if you are in the area. Despite being busy and not having a reservation they managed to find us a table. Staff couldn't have been more helpful. Food was excellent. We had the roasted pepper bruschetta followed...

Very enjoyable early evening meal. We were Friday evening‘walk-ins’. We were staying nearby for a concert and this restaurant was one of two recommendations.

While visiting the area for 2 nights, we had an excellent experience all round. Starters, mains and cocktails were all superb. Service was nothing short of perfect. We are hopeful that nearby restaurants are closed tomorrow as would love an excuse to do two night in a row!
