Bear Inn by Marston's Inns in Mendip

I had booked our visit months in advance ( our third stay at the bear inn) when we checked in the young lady said we will be in a family room across the road - a room in the annex Blossom Cottage-I said that we had booked a double room not a family room to which the staff member said we are very busy you should of booked earlier. The room in the cottage was dark and tired looking, not inviting what so ever. We had a pleasant breakfast on the Saturday however on the Sunday my husbands omelette was brown in colour when he turned it over it was worse obviously burnt. We asked the pleasant waitress to take a look, she asked what did we want her to do - my husband asked could he have an omelette that wasnt burnt. She agreed that it was burnt but said we wouldnt get one not burnt/any betteras she new the chef wouldnt be able to manage it. My husband then put in another order, the eggs wers overdone.

Friendly helpful staff, efficient check in. Good size room and ensuite. Clean and tidy room and bathroom. Bathroom a little dated but clean and functional Good breakfast in the morning and again nice friendly staff. Definitely stay again and would recommend

Excellent stay and lovely hospitality. Breakfast and dinner was superb food and vast choice of drinks. Served by Hayley each day for breakfast and for dinner and she was so thorough in ensuring that we were well looked after. Room had all that we needed and a great location for the shopping outlet nearby.

We had a lovely time. Everyone was very helpful and kind. If we ever make it back over the pond we will be sure to visit your establishment again.

I liked that I could do check in and out online. Things ran very smoothly. Staff were all very pleasant and friendly. The only negative would be as a woman travelling alone I felt a little unsafe where my room was. I had thought I would be in a room at the hotel not in a wee flat a short distance down the road. This is just a little negative and it would not stop me from staying again or recommending to friends and family.

The initial impression was of a tired looking premises in need of a bit of TLC. Check-in went smooth. We had dinner that evening. The initial service was very slow. A good ten minutes before we were asked what we wanted to drink, by which time we were ready to order food. Another ten minutes to get our drinks. When the food it was very disappointing. Let’s start by saying that we ate it because we hadn’t eaten a thing all day. My wife had the Sunday Roast (Turkey). The green veg was nearly cold, and it looked as though the luke warm parsnips and roast potatoes had been around for a while. The waitress offered to reheat it for my wife, which I suspect is not a recommended practice. I had the Steak Americano which I ordered medium rare. When the plate arrived it had about eight soggy, warm, chips on it. I mentioned this to the waitress who went and got some more. These, although still soggy, were the hottest thing on the plate. There was no way that they had been deep-fried in oil of the required temperature. My supposedly medium-rare steak was dry and over cooked. I was tempted to ask for a fresh one but given everything else suspected that I would receive much the same. Our waitress asked the Duty Manager, Laura, to speak with us. She used mitigating excuses like the staff have been working hard all day and are doing their best. Just because I ate in the evening I still expect the same quality of food. Laura asked what we wanted her to do about it. My wife said that it was up to her to make that decision. In the end she did nothing. Her attitude to our complaint was very dismissive. The next morning we had breakfast. My wife had an omelette well done, I had the full English. Both were absolutely fine.

Very spacious room, in need of some refreshing but clean. Very friendly and welcoming reception staff and good food at the restaurant, although the service was a bit slow

So far it's been a comfy heartwarming visit with all our needs met and more, great staff and amenities with food to die for, literally the best food we've ever had away from home.

The bed was comfy the room was spotless! We were in one of the cottages which was lovely, only one downside was there was a room above us & they had children, there was obviously no sound proofing on the ceiling as we were woken rather early from children running around above us! Shower over bath could be updated as well. But we did enjoy our stay! Staff were amazing

Food and service. Bedroom comfortable Room facilities good Problems with plumbing and a dirty ventaxia that deposited black bits in the basin.

Really friendly and helpful people. Comfortable beds and decent shower. Food was great in the restaurant and at breakfast. The only problem we had was being in room 6. Until closing time we had to listen to banging doors and the hand dryers blowing from the public toilets below the room. There was also a constant noise from what seemed to be the kitchen extractor fans.

The staff are excellent so friendly and helpful.The food is good too. The room was very clean and beds were comfortable .A great night's sleep .

I always enjoy my stay at The Bear. The staff are friendly and helpful, the food delicious and the rooms comfortable. I especially appreciate the fact that I can make a decent cup of tea in my room.

Fab place food is absolutely beautiful as is the breakfast we stayed in the dose cottages next to the hotel just don’t appreciate people smoking cannabis

Our room was nicely decorated, with comfortable bed. a nice touch was the fan in the room, really made a difference as it was a very warm night. check in was a breeze we had food in the evening, this was excellent quality

Another amazing weekend in this comfortable and friendly hotel. The rooms are immaculately presented, breakfast is excellent with a wide choice. The food at other times is very typical of similar establishments but cooked and served to a high standard. The bar is well-stocked with something for everyone and both bar staff and restaurant staff are pleasant, friendly and professional. It's a stone's throw to Clarks Village - shoppers' paradise!

The hotel was lovely and clean. Friendly welcome. Food and drinks excellent and good value.

Great staff told me the best places to go for walks and the best cafes to go. The place is in street town centre 20 minute walk to tesco. The room was fantastic spotless. I would highly recommend the Bear Inn I will definitely be interested in going back.

A one night stay in a very good sized room overlooking the garden.Lovely big comfortable bed,and a drink in the lovely garden. Very good value for money for the size of the room.11 am check out time is a bonus too.

The room was great, the staff were lovely, the food was good, the only thing that spoilt it a bit for us was the fact that we had a lovely garden outside the room but no table or chairs to enjoy it.

I always book there to stay. The staff make me feel so welcome and I joke about moving in.

We have eaten there before but never stayed. We had a family room, it was very spacious, very clean, we were very impressed. We had a meal when we arrived, it was excellent, the service was top class. The breakfast the next day was varied, we had table service, again excellent customer service

As usual, our two night stay at the bear was fabulous! The rooms although not luxurious are clean and comfortable with all amenities you will need. Perfect for your holiday needs.the staff and breakfast were excellent as always. Breakfast omelette was lovely, pastries fresh and plentiful, hubby had ,"the works" and was very happy 😊. Highly recommend for a lovely short break, great value for money,we'll be booking again soon. Thanks to all the team, especially Diane

Great hotel lovely friendly staff great size room and bed . Didn't like traffic noise at very early am but that's not your fault we are light sleepers .

Basic room but it had comfy beds, adequate en suite facilities, coffee, tv and wifi so for the price it really was good value. Maybe, for a twin room , it could have a couple more clothes hangers, but we were 2 females sharing, maybe for a couple there would be enough. Staff very friendly and efficient. Food amazing value for guests. Must recommend the fish and chips.

This pub has improved since I last visited. Very dog friendly which is not for me as it's a food pub rather than a boozer. I had a nice sandwich with a side salad.
