The Cross Keys is an unpretentious roadside village pub; no frills and nothing fancy but what you get is very good. The interior decorations are somewhat eclectic - the bar wall is papered with monetary notes from all over, making that wall worth a lot of cash - whilst the other walls in the bar are plastered with hundreds of beer mats! Staff 'uniform' seems to be whatever was lying around when they got up, mainly jeans and tee shirts, but don't let any of that put you off coming here. Great selection of well kept beer, ciders galore (well this is deepest Somerset, what do you expect?) and a lot of 'different' gins are all on offer. Add on large portions of competitively priced food promptly served and you'll be glad that you pulled into here - the large car park is at the rear, accessed by the scruffy road down the side of the pub.

This is the second time I’ve come here for a steak because I think, for the price, this is a great meal! I think the roasted garlic is delicious and the steak was cooked to perfection, although I found the cut of beef to be much better this time than it was about 6 weeks ago on my first visit. The atmosphere is always lovely and the staff are attentive and very friendly.

We have visited this pub several times for meals and always enjoyed it. However, after a 'not so good' experience on our last visit, we decided to give it another chance and went for Sunday lunch. Sadly, much of the food was mediocre and the roast beef was inedible as you couldn't even get a knife through it. When we told the waiter, we were offered a steak knife or replace ment. However, the second plate of beef was the exactly the same. Puddings, although nice, were expensive for the meagre portions and took 35mins to arrive. Although they did take the beef off the bill it didn't make up for the spoilt family get together and we won’t be visiting again.

Had a lovely day at a No Dig festival . Phoned the pub on site saves cooking and washing up. I had Turkey a la King pie with mash spuds and veg selection and rich gravy. Turkey a la king is white meat red peppers in creamy white sauce Plus point this was a proper pie not floating puff pastry Personal I would have preferred strong red pepper flavour. My other half had ham hock with fried eggs chip and rocket dressing. All food tasted great hot and well presented. Special mention to our serving guy I think his name is Usain Bolt as he broke records for speed of service. Give this place a go the food is good

Me and my friend came in on Friday 23rd for lunch as we weren’t from around the area and we were travelling home and we found this pub. Very lovely vibe to it. The waiters are so helpful and friendly. At first we told the man we wasn’t sure if we was going to be eating. Wow I’m glad we did! The food was divine! The service time was super fast! And enjoyed every minute of being there, was still thinking about my fish and chips hours after leaving and on the drive back to where we live! Amazing place.. rarely do reviews but a place has to be a certain something for me to review it. Amazing !!

Very pleasant pub with nice atmosphere. Friendly staff and food was very good. My trout fishcakes were excellent and the fish and chips were huge. My elderly father can't eat large meals and they do smaller portion fish and chips which was great value. Good wine choice at sensible price. And dog friendly.

Booked here as we were on business and had an 8:30 meeting the following day. The evening meal was fine and the staff in the evening very helpful. The room was small but comfortable but the noise from the pub, including music prevented an early night. The main problem came at Breakfast. We knew there was no cooked option and breakfast did not start till 8am. We arrived at 7:55 due to having a short window. The member of staff rolled in at 8:05 only after we had asked the lady cleaning the pub if there were any staff serving breakfast. The staff member looked like they had just woken up and rolled out of bed, dressed in a scruffy T shirt and jeans. Nothing prepared, no cups. At 8:15 I was finally handed a cup of tea of which I had no time to drink it as I had a 15 min drive to my meeting. So no breakfast and appalling service and attitude of the staff member. Is it too much to except staff to be working before the published breakfast time to prepare for guests??? Very poor and would not recommend

Visited here again with a friend who lives locally. Nice meal of chicken liver parfaits, trout salad and ham egg and chips, lovely chips and lots of ham. Followed by steamed sponge pudding and custard which needed more custard really, and lemon drizzle with lemon sorbet, but ask for vanilla ice cream with it, which comes from Marchfields near Bath and is delicious. Acquaint old stopping place for horses and carts on a busy cross roads with friendly staff and lovely food. You can also camp there and no doubt get a lovely breakfast.

We stopped off for a quick "pit stop" lunch. We ordered a beef burger and a chicken burger. The beef burger was ok but the chicken burger was awful. The chicken breast was completely dry with the texture of leather. I nearly scored it as "poor" but I don't like being negative so on the plus side, the staff were friendly, parking is ample, the decor pretty. Maybe we just made the wrong menu choice?

Convenient to our pitch . Menu was small limited choice We had homemade pate served with toasted hot cross buns??? And a sort of Cumberland relish The dish was ok but would have been better with toast fingers. We ordered battered hake with chips peas and tartar sce. This looked like a frozen battered Brake brothers offering fried in old oil giving it a dark soggy appearance. I felt disappointed as was expecting something better. Never mind you live and learn

I had eaten here twice with my wife, and today they hosted a coach party of 43 seniors which had I organised on the strength of the good experience I had each time previously. [We were also visiting nearby Lytes Cary Manor.] The pub is attractive inside and out, it has comfortable bar and eating areas, including a very convenient large room where my party sat at a variety of 4 and 6 seat tables. The food was served efficiently, was well presented, tasty, and in sufficient quantity for us to wonder if we really did need a dessert. However, the 'pub grub' desserts were also tasty and generous. I hope we will be able to use this venue again if we have a reason to be in the area.

We visited for weekend in June. Nice and quiet site behind the pub. Lovely level field partitioned off for caravans/motorhomes and tents. Toilets and showers are a bit ‘diy’ basic but were clean and fit for purpose. A bit of Female TLC is maybe all that’s needed to improve. The pub is a 2 min walk across the car park and has a main dining room, bar, function room and beer garden. It is advisable to book in advance. The menu is varied and the food is excellent! There are a number of real ales and ciders available and a selection of gins, whiskeys, wine etc. We also saw jugs of cider and ale being sold. We arrived on the evening England was playing in the euros and the place was very busy. The girls were so polite, attentive and hard working and made our evening very pleasant. Due to the weather we returned the next evening for dinner and unfortunately did not receive the same pleasant experience. The female staff working the previous evening were off and the male barman was visibly struggling to multitask and was quite rude to my husband. After having a drink in the bar we were later asked whilst having our meal if we had paid for our drinks? We were made to feel quite uncomfortable. The food was excellent but again after paying for our meal were again questioned if we had paid. There seems to be a lack of communication between the staff that leads to paying customers being treated like criminals. Very disappointing as it’s such a lovely bar/restaurant and campsite. It appears the business has expanded but the manager and his male barman have not yet adapted to their new clientele. An error that I have no doubt will cost them significantly as people will not return.

Dropped in this evening for an impromptu drink and there was such a nice atmosphere we decided to stay for something to eat too. Well what an unexpected treat, we ordered a chicken curry and a tofu burger - wow, both were amazing, and as someone who’s had to move to WFPB diet it was good to see a couple of options on the menu that I could eat, but the fact that my choice was off the scale taste wise was a wonderful surprise and my husband was really complimentary about the curry. He travels extensively worldwide for work and eats out often, he’s not given to express positive comments very often so it must have been good! Camped here for a long weekend from the 4th of September, Couldn’t get a pitch the bank holiday weekend before. I’m not surprised, because it’s probably one of the nicest places we’ve stayed at. Nice quiet campsite with no uncontrollable screaming brats running riot. The camp manager Andy is a top guy who can’t do enough for you and is always checking to see if you’re ok. The ground is great too, I didn’t hit a single stone when I was driving the pegs in. Showers are clean and spacious. There are only two showers for the male and two for the female, but it is a small campsite. Plenty of other toilets too.I would strongly recommend getting your shopping before you arrived. There’s no convenient store nearby and a supermarket is a 15/20 minute drive. If you’re not planning on cooking, the cross keys pub is a staggering stones throw away, furnished with nice real ales and local cider, Shipyard is £4.30 Estrella is £4.90. Nice bar and very pleasant waiting staff, certainly no eye rolling here. Sorsha was great, very busy person, helpful and nothing was too much trouble. We had dinner here every night, because the food and service is that good. Had a lovely Sunday roast and at £11.50 was very generous, couldn’t eat it all. I had the beautifully cooked thick sliced roast beef with Yorkshire pudding and my wife had the Roast Chicken with homemade bread sauce. I would recommend either. Vegetables were nicely cooked, not cooked to a mush or pulp like some places. On our final night we opted for the ploughman’s which was amazing (Boxing day on a plate) loved the sausage roll, ham and their home smoked cheese, it was lovely and tasty. Couldn’t believe my ears when I heard a guy opposite moaning to the waitress about the sausage roll being cold, “It’s a ploughman’s mate”, but there’s always one!The tomato and courgette soup is amazing here too, they should bottle and sell it, it’s that good. I would also recommend their burgers and delicious sirloin steak, both very nice. Cheese and biscuits, cheesecake or the chocolate brownie, it’s hard to choose which? All are delicious. If you’re planning on staying here, I would recommend booking your tables well in advance as it gets very busy. I over-heard a gentleman who was staying for the weekend say that he could only get one table for 6pm.Book your pitch early too!

Excellent beer and Cider on tap made the wait really enjoyable. The pub was well attended as was the event especially for a midweek! Of course the comedians did vary and a couple were not very good and the amount of curry did vary as we were one of the last portions were on the small size guess the chef over egged the earlier portions! But all in all it was a great evening certainly the last comedian was great. We all left agreeing we'd do it again but maybe get in the queue for the curry earlier!!

The puddings were equally great - I had chocolate bread and butter pudding with icecream. Everyone there was raving about the high standard and the waiting staff were friendly, attentive and looked after us with a cheerful and professional manner. Nice feel to the place and busy which is good to see. Only down side, and the reason for the rating I have given, was the smell of cigarette smoke that pervaded the whole place, including where we were eating. This really put me off and I’m afraid ruined my meal. I couldn’t work out where it was coming from but there were smokers outside when we left and it appeared that somehow the smell was being drawn in to the interior unrelentingly.

Unfortunately the last three times we have been to the Cross Keys the food/service has not been as good. Its such a shame because the pub has a great atmosphere and was one of our favourite places to eat with family and friends. We have had poor meals on the last three visits and I think we will now thing twice about returning. We wanted to give it a chance as we like the pub so much but on the last visit we ordered the haddock and chips, unfortunately the chips were appalling, I can only liken them to a sponge, so greasy. The fish again was extremely greasy. On previous visits to this the service was very slow, we had to wait almost an hour for our food, the waitress had got the order wrong when it did arrive and again the food was poor and just not to the same standard as it used to be in this pub, I'm not sure what has happened recently but its just not up to scratch anymore. A real shame.

Once we had got it it was actually lovely. Then to have sat there for at LEAST 15 minutes before the woman took our plates, yet she walked past our table several of times where she could have taken at least one plate at a time. We were sat by the kitchen but it’s like we weren’t there, she didn’t even acknowledge us. Once she had finally collected the plates she asked us if we wanted desserts and because it was my mums birthday we would have loved a dessert. She kept walking past our table again but yet couldn’t even drop off the menu!! We were waiting for nearly an hour just to see a dessert menu. In the end we were all so tired and fed up and quite frankly couldn’t believe the service. We decided to leave the desserts and go. As we got up and we’re getting our things the women then came over and asked us if it’s too late for desserts... we couldn’t believe it. But we refused them as we didn’t want to wait any longer as it took them at least half an hour to do desserts on the table behind us! But what made us laugh was she was so quick to give us the bill!!!

When you book a room in a pub at 11pm via an OTA from a field at the Glastonbury Festival, it's wise to manage your expectations.

Popped in on the off chance after a day out. Was very grateful when the gentleman said he could fit us in. Sorry to say the food was horrible. The yorkies were like leather couldn't cut them, roasties tasted as if left under a heat lamp, beef very tough, veg was hard. not the same veg on everyone plate, Turkey and gammon was ok, have to say very expensive for what you got.

Sunday carvery very poor, very limited choice of vegetables, what choice available not very good. Both meats that were available were barely cooked (raw). More meats were brought by the chef following feedback to the waitress to be fair but was much the same. Overall meal experience poor, not to our liking.

16 of us met here for a family birthday meal and we can not fault it. We pre booked our food a couple of days beforehand and all of the food came out together shortly after we had all sat down. The food was great, not one complaint..my husband wants to go back soon for fish and chips again!

Decided to pop in for a birthday lunch, didn't book but not very busy. One young barman who's priority clearly wasn't to serve at the bar. After buying drinks and asking to order food, got pushed to one side in favour of this who had booked for lunch. When I suggested that I was first in line the barman told not to be rude, several times! Left a full pint, definitely won't be going back!

We have just got home from eating the best Sunday carvery for miles around without exception. The meats are perfectly cooked, choice of pork, lamb and beef. Lovely cheesy cauliflower cheese, and a good selection of vegetables. Yorkshire pudding home made and fab!! To top it off the gravy is perfect. So difficult to find a Sunday roast that is even close to a homemade one, but this is!!

Wanted an escape for the weekend and having left it late booking anywhere ended up here. Access is controlled by key that you collect from the bar on arrival, site was around 20% occupied so was really quiet. There is a well stocked petrol station around the corner and the pub does lunch and dinner menu. Facilities in site were basic but clean. The beer garden was nice with very good planting and hanging baskets of flowers. You can see extensions have been made to the restaurant, it looks like it has ended short of its potential. The bar is ok, and whilst there was an open fire, I imagine it will burn in the autumn/ winter. A fair selection of beers and ciders but at Bath prices rather than a very average country pub price. The funny thing with a bar that tries to attract campers was the feel that the local drinkers appeared to try to stamp their ownership on the place; Anyway, they seemed harmless enough. Lunch menu wasn’t that great, never ate dinner there. Tried to go for a walk but footpaths are rare, with one we found by a river merely going to a field. Would recommend they replace the dining chairs which look budget type and the very tired settees.

We went to see a music act.Sadly they were fully booked for food but what we saw served looked great. Great place for an evening - brilliant range of ales and ciders, free live music and a friendly, buzzing atmosphere. We'll definitely be back with a booked table to eat next time.

just left this campsite and its a little gem..adults only campsite right behind a public which will say you get no noise from and is a lovely public with friendly staff...the campsite is a good size with good electric points and very peaceful...the toilet block has 2 showers and 1 toilet plus a urinal and the ladies 2 showers and 2 toilets ..the water is hot all the time and free with a good pressure but will say the tiled floor oitside the shower does get under water and bit dirty because people wear their flip flops on the wooden pallet you stand on to dry..little pick that all that it but overall this is a must stay if you want a quiet time but can walk 20yds for a public atmosphere as well.

We were placed in a small room of the pub with another 4 at a table, which meant it was lacking in atmosphere. The room was dark which made reading the menu quite difficult. The service was excellent - the offering of food a little basic and limited but it was well cooked, very tasty and well presented with plenty on the plate. Would choose a different area to eat next time unless in a party.

A group of us visited on Saturday as part of my sisters hen do. There were 16 of us plus babies and they were so accommodating- we had use of the function room which opened out onto the beer garden/courtyard so on a lovely hot day it didn’t feel like we were cooped inside. We had to pre-order our meals which actually made it easier on the day. The food came out really quickly and the service was good! Generous portions, good value for money. I only wish we could have stayed longer to sample some more of the wide beer selection. Thank you for having us!

We ate here as we were camping in the campsite behind the pub (see other review!), we enjoyed this food so much it's getting its own well deserved review, it was that good! Great menu offering all manner of local produce. I opted for 8oz burger in homemade bun with deep fried shallots, celeriac and chips, my other half had steak, chips and salad. The pannacotta comes highly recommended and the local cheeses on the generous cheeseboard were delicious. Compliments to the chef, this was the best meal we've had in a very long time. Table service by polite professional unobtrusive staff added to the truly friendly and chilled-out atmosphere here. The little box of trivial pursuit cards on the table to keep you amused while waiting for your meal is a nice touch! Add to this a huge selection of cider and some cracking ales and there you have The Cross Keys Inn! We waddled back off through the campsite like stuffed pigs, full of yummy grub - we shall return!

Visited whilst on a midweek break with my wife. Ordered drinks from the ample choice and grabbed a table. We were soon greeted with menus and both ordered pie; one game and one venison. The pies were a good size with plenty of chips. Then a massive portion of veg appeared as well. It was a good selection of cauliflower cheese, red cabbage and carrots. It would have been impossible to fit more meat in either pie. The venison was so tender and tasty. Good pastry as well. I don't remember having a better pie than this and I've eaten some pies!

Called in with a friend for a drink and we were tempted by the friendly welcome and enticing menu to opt for stopping for one of the “new to menu” pizzas and I am so glad we did! We both opted for the spicy pizza and I have to say… it was one of the best pizzas I have had. Freshly cooked and fully loaded - perfect! 😋

It's a little pricey for a gastro pub, but normally, it's well worth money. It is very friendly and a warm invite when you enter. It's always a great selection on the menu. I decided on the soup of the day, which was potato and leak served with croutons and bread with a herby butter. I was looking forward to this as I like the combination of thick potato and the hint of an onion leak coming through the texture. I was slightly disappointed as it was lacking in flavour, and I didn't expect a french baton with the soup. The main made up for this in the sense the lamb was cooked to perfection, but there was a curious yoghurt combination going on at the side that didn't really work, but that aside I did enjoy the main. I didn't have a desert mainly because I was full.
