Having recommended The Cross Keys to many of our friends here in Glasgow - and having directed a bunch of pals staying in nearby Gargunnock House to stop in for a spot of lunch on Sat whilst visiting the Christmas Market - we were horrified that 3 of our party should be taken down with food poisoning. The 3 poisoned friends had all eaten the Cullen Skink served on Sat 25th Nov. Luckily - I was late and missed the kunch service so made do with dipping a chip in my husbands Skink. That night I lay awake beside my 10mo baby with terrible tummy ache - but that was nothing compared to my husband and two friends. All 3 spent the night bent over (or on) the toilet - whole body aches / feverish / shivering... 2 had travelled from London and Bristol respectively - we had come through from Glasgow for my birthday weekend away. Half of the weekend was stolen from us by the food poisoning. And to make matters worse, when an unaffected member of the party phoned the pub to give The Cross Keys a heads up that any remaining Skink from Saturdays service should be discarded immediately, he was told there was no way it could've been the cause!!?? No apology... nothing. Out of about 12 of us (a few sensibly went to Rhubarb and Lime), the 3 who spent the next 24 hours in pain, vomiting, were the 3 who had Cullen Skink. 2 made a point of ordering it as they were visiting Scotland. What a sad experience to have had. Had we received a heartfelt apology, we may have been back as we've enjoyed the odd roast and pie in the past. But we shall point people in the direction of the Inn and Rhubarb and Lime in future. Not worth the risk... Oh - and although not worthy of a bad review on its own - the rest of the lunch was bang average and the owner was incredibly unwelcoming to boot. Embarrassed to have directed so many people there!

Finally stayed at the Cross Keys after meaning to do so for months! We weren't disappointed. Our room was well furnished with fantastic views over the Carse Of Stirling. After pre dinner drinks (G&Ts/pints of Bitter & Twisted) in front of the log fire in the bar we moved up the stairs to the back bar to eat. The meal was really, really good - best steak I have had in years. Excellent wine list. Prices very reasonable for what were large portions. The cooked breakfast the next morning was even better - quite possibly the best 'fry up' I've ever had. Staff were friendly and efficient - we'll be back ASAP!

Visited the Cross Keys for the first using the government scheme for August. The place is quirky but the food is excellent. There was five of us, all having different meals but the wait was not too long. The food was first class and the service very good. Had arranged everything under the social distancing rules and it was well laid out. The price even without the scheme was good value for money. All of us would revisit with or without the scheme.

Stayed for one night to break a journey and we couldn’t have chosen a better place. It’s full of charm and very cosy. Roaring open fires, fantastic friendly staff, locals and great service. The room is decorated in a contemporary but cosy style and spotlessly clean. The breakfast served in the cosy breakfast room was delicious. Served at the time we asked for the night before. All in all this is a gem of a place in a quaint Scottish village which welcomes you from the moment you arrive. We will be going back here and would highly recommend.

What a find another first.....after waking with a fuzzy head after our night at The Bridge Kitchen Diane and I decided to go for lunch before visiting the Antique Centre in Doune. It was a toss up between The Crosskeys and The Inn in Kippen. Cross Keys won....and we weren't let down. Jerusalem artichoke fritters for Diane and Mushroom and rocket soup for myself both outstanding! Diane then had the lake and I had Asian spiced lamb shoulder but were incredibly tasty and plentiful. Staff were friendly and attentive I cannot recommend The Cross Keys highly enough. Get down there

Made the journey here as it featured in 'Scotland The Best', a culinary guide to Scotland. The sample menu online promised lots of variety and delicious dishes but the reality fell far short. I chose the Steak & Ale Pie with Roasted veg and new potatoes. The potatoes were undercooked and I think they must have opened the oven door and shown the pot of veg inside. The pie was stodgy, no puff pastry but the steak was well cooked. Disappointed .

Good atmosphere and very local. The beer is plenty, but my dad ordered a well done steak and it was red. I ordered a medium steak and it was raw. The credit card machine was broke and the owner was very rude about it, because we didn’t want to give him our credit card details. In the end though, we did, and he hasn’t overcharged. After walking from Gargunnock to Kippen on what can only be described as one of the hottest and most humid days I have ever known in Scotland, we decided to call in for a well earned cold drink, the cross keys is a lovely old style village pub, very welcoming with friendly staff and stocking a small but very good range of real ales, after a couple of cold ones, we decided to test the food, again not a massive menu, but the food is honest, down to earth good pub grub, just what you need after a long walk, prices were also very good I thought, will be calling in again for sure.

we were here for dinner --- arrived without reservations, not realizing how busy it would be. (we highly recommend calling in advance for evening reservations) we were fortunate that one of the only unreserved tables opened up about 5 minutes after we got there. the steak and ale pie and the moroccan lamb were perfectly prepared. the pie was accompanied by roasted root vegetables, which resulted in a huge serving of food. despite this, my husband managed to finish every morsel. the lamb was served with couscous. the lamb was tender and perfectly spiced. the service was attentive without being intrusive. they do allow dogs in the pub, but all were well behaved. (generally we have observed this in scotland -- the dogs are well behaved in restaurants and pubs)

My husband and I booked three nights at the Cross Keys Inn at Kippen in July. I spoke to Paul, who checked the bookings and after discussing the option of the three rooms they had available and on offer, we booked room number 3 which comes with a king size bed and larger shower. This was £99 per night as opposed to the other two rooms at £89. We received an email confirming this. On arrival this September we were taken up and given a tour of room number 3 which was a pleasant room decorated in a contemporary style offering the facilities which we had agreed upon. Paul (who I assume was the manager) then told us that we could not have this room as a booking had come through for it and was being given to some other people who were arriving within an hour. We were then shown room number 2 which was the smaller twin bedded room for two people and it was explained to us that we would be in that room for the first night and could move to room number 3 the following day should we so wish, but it was up to us.

As they were all fully booked I looked further afield and found The Cross Keys at Kippen which turned out to be a wonderful stroke of good luck. The pub dates back to 1703 and the walls seem to drip with history. It is perfectly located close to a number of beautiful Lochs, Inchmahome and Sterling Castle and the food is no-nonsense, locally sourced and good value grub - I can particularly recommend the Cullen Skink and Pork Belly. What really sets it apart though is the staff who are attentive, informative and friendly even at busy times. The rooms are well appointed with good views. average experience... not many people in the pub... the owner was very nice, but feel that we were overcharged for the dinner and the wine was very overpriced and of poor quality

My wife and I were staying in Kippen with our little dog and we went to the cross keys for dinner and we both had the steak and ale pie and it was out of this world! Possibly one of the best pies I've ever eaten. Highly recommended!!Also great atmosphere in the pub with a cosy fire and our dog was allowed in which made the evening even better.

Not much to say: good food, great atmosphere, in the heart of one of Scotland's most beautiful regions, the Keys is a regular for us. It never disappoints.

The food here was fantastic and substantial. The staff were very friendly. Would have gone back there if time had permitted. We checked out of the place we were staying early, so did not have a chance to go back.

I was recommended The Cross Keys by the owner of our rental. We arrived on a Sunday evening to find every table bar one reserved, so we ended up in a small bar area. Service was good and food was okay, a bit pricey for a small country pub. However I felt the meal was ruined by a lady who turned up and began tuning her recorder next to us and then once her band mates arrived started practicing for what I assume was a gig of some sort. I am afraid this put me off the venue and we finished quickly and left.

We did visit this establishment just over a year ago and always intended to give it another go. Although part of a public bar, the patrons enjoying only a refreshment were respectful of the diners and were not overly raucus. Four of us this time, we were greeted with a nice welcome and led to our table. The menu offers a great deal of choice and incorporates a level of 'exotica' if that's what you want. For those with less ambitious palates, there are the normal bar food favourites. Three of us opted for the delicious cullen skink to start. The women chose the battered haddock for the main course with the guys opting for the lamb. All were delicious with the only negative comment from my partner who thought the chips were not up to the standard of the rest of the meal. Only the person who didn't have a starter managed a dessert and, by all accounts this was delicious. At approx £25 per head, value for money was excellent. Although I understand that a rural pub must be 'dog friendly', I think a greater effort could have been made by the owners of a young pointer (?) to control it's 'mooching' behaviour at our adjacent table. One of our party is allergic to dogs and this caused some unnecessary angst. Over the piece, though a good experience

Ive been coming here for years and the food has always exceeded expectation. The staff are great, the cooking is good, the portions are large and comments here about overpricing are laughable. The only pointer I have is that the kids offering could be a little better, more of an attempt at a balanced plate? The house beer is brilliant and when the fire's on, there are few better places to be in the west of Scotland.

My wife and I stopped off on the Bank holiday and were really glad we did.As it was a nice day, we sat outside in the beer garden and it was the perfect sun trap.Service was really quick and attentive but informal and friendly, which made you feel really welcome. The food was excellent and we would recommend the cullen skink and the fish and "proper" chips. The Moroccan lamb stew looked fantastic too....was tempted to steal a forkfull from the woman at the table along from us.Add in Jessie the labradoodle welcoming everyone and you have the perfect place for a relaxing bite to eat. You should definitely try it.

My wife and I visited the Cross keys for the first time in about 18 months. Friendly, attentive service a susual. The standard is as good as ever. They have added a tapas menu, which makes it possible to have a meal without a big main course, with plenty of variety. A good selection of local craft ales is the icing on the cake

Frequently go to this little hot spot but first time going for sunday lunch last week, wow!!! They don't like to hold back on the portions anyway. Two slices of beautifully cooked rib eye of beef which we were told is sourced right across the road at the local butchers, homemade crispy yorkies which held probably the best gravy i ever tasted and ALL the trimmings, we couldnt move by the end of it so never ordered those award winning puds this time round. Will obviously be going back but which time of the week we arn't too sure!!
