Excellent friendly professional bar and waiting staff. The food was not great. Burger buns were very hard. Chips were a little overdone. They did not seem home cooked. Our dog was allowed in the back room.

Roast beef was pre packed plastic beef with frozen Yorkshire pudding, Luke warm gravy, cheese and onion pie ok, cold baked beans and Luke warm chips. Pint of dark ale was rank, tasted of vinegar, staff were polite and out to please. Won't be going back any time soon, shame as it's a nice olde world pub

Visited as a large family group in December. We pre-ordered well in advance, but despite that there were issues on the day with missing options and a lack of consideration of alternatives for the GF in our group (who couldn’t even have gravy on their roast dinner, let alone other limitations). Each course at least one dish came out later than the rest (one was over 10 minutes late). The service was really slow and we had to ask for assistance a few times. The staff were all lovely and I think they were just over-stretched, but given pre booking etc. the wait times and issues we experienced shouldn’t have happened. really disappointing and put a bit of a downer on our family get-together.

If you lament the gentrification of the High Streets head to the back of town and find a nice traditional pub like this one. It's got a great outside area for the summer as well as multiple different sections inside. There is a separate function room, which is an excellent space for large group bookings. Parking use readily available in their own lot. I've never failed to find a park easily, but there is free street parking in the surrounds, if necessary. The volume inside depends on the day but it's generally easier to converse than in many other local pubs.

Absolutely lovely pub, we turned up 10 minutes before the kitchen was due to shut but the girl serving was more than happy to accommodate us, she was so friendly and polite plus excellent service. The food was delicious tasty and value for money, I recommend the rump steak with home cooked chips. The steak was thick generous potion and cooked to perfection. The pub itself was warm cosy and friendly.

We called off here for a Sunday roast after a walk in the hills with our dog. First impressions were that the pub was busy, warm and friendly and dogs were allowed. We ordered drinks and looked through the menu. No mention of Sunday roast or price for it. The waitress told us the choice and took our order. We also ordered some sausages for our dog. Would be nice to see a menu for dogs like other pubs but the offer of sausages were what was on offer. The roast beef dinner was not what we had hoped for. Bland sums it up. The beef was definitely preheated and precut. The gravy thin and tasteless. Mash was dissapointing. Roast potatoes were not roasted but deep fried. Doubt the Yorkshire were homemade and the veg selection all boiled within an inch of their sorry lives. The chef/cook obviously has no passion or skills to pull off a decent Sunday roast. I've been a chef for 42 years and know the corners that get cut in the kitchen. Words of advise... Roast tour potatoes. Roast your veg. Whole carrots and parsnips this time of year. Cook the beef fresh and carve it to order. Make a proper meat gravy. Make decent Yorkshire puddings and maybe a nice cheese sauce on the bland plain cauliflower. We told the waitress on payment how bland it was and she said she would pass this onto the chef/cook. We won't be returning for food.

Sunday dinner The beer is well kept, however, give the food a miss its tastless warmed up cash and carry food, the gravy having the consistency of water like comes from a kettle and a jar. Whoever is in the kitchen needs to rethink their choice of work,as its not in catering.

I have been a customer at The Cross Keys for over 60 years. Yesterday they catered a lovely afternoon buffet for 70 guests, following the funeral of my wife, Margaret. We filled most of the pub. The bar service was quick and friendly, the open fire gave us a warm welcome. The quality of the drinks and the buffet were excellent and very good value. First class, all round. Haven’t been here in years and won’t go again! When we arrived the pub was quiet apart from a large group of people who were obviously going to be having a meal. We ordered our food, and the starters came fairly quickly. When our plates were being cleared the girl said “there is going to be a delay on your mains because we’ve got a large party in”. Not good. Why weren’t we told before we ordered? We might have chosen to go elsewhere. When the mains did eventually arrive I had a pile of chips on my plate which were revolting. They were soggy and like a pile of mush. Totally inedible. Around 8 pieces of scampi and a very boring salad. All our chips were the same. When our plates were collected I told the girl that the chips were inedible. She did offer to get me some more but by that time I had eaten the scampi and salad. I asked her to tell the chef that the chips were very poor. We asked for the bill and waited ages for it. When it came we asked for the card machine but that wasn’t forthcoming either so I eventually had to go to the bar to pay. The girl behind the bar asked whether everything had been ok with the meal and I said not. She didn’t know what to say. Nobody at any point offered to reduce the bill or make things right in any other way. Very poor. Won’t be back.

Food ordered, after around 45 mins wait our food came which was the wrong food, it then cook then another 30 minutes to produce basic baguette and chips. The food then came out cold, no meneber of staff wanted to come and ask if the food was ok clearly knew it was not. 6 times they walked passed and looked over after we had finished and was arguing who was going to come over to clear our table as let left the majority of food. There no was apology and was rushed out after we had paid! Will not be going back

Went to the Cross Keys for the first timein a well. The tableware bookedfor 5.30pm and we arrived on time. We were seated at our table and asked the waitress to give us a couple of minutes while we decided on what we wanted. We ordered our food at 5.45pm, by 6.15pm, we asked how long our food would be and they said that itaouldbe another 15 to 20 minutes, mean while two tables which had ordered after us got their food. We asked the waitress what nonalcoholic lagers there were, to which she answered that she thought that she thought that thry didn't have any nonalcoholic lagers. We asked her to find out, she returned stating thatnthey didn't have any non alcoholic beers but they did have Guiness 0 and Birra Moretti zero. A comment which drew numerous looks from the other clients. Anyway 6.30 and our food arrives, my wife and I both had Sunday roasts and the plates were both chipped and dirty. When we challenged the waitress she said that thr plate wasn't dirty. We refused to eat the food until we had fresh food on clean plates, the waitress took the food away, we then had to wait for a further 20 minutes. When the food arrived, it was confirmed that the food had been freshly prepared and were we happy and we said that we were. 10 minutes now a waitress who had served us came back and said "are you happy now!" I was so close to putting my knife and fork down, I thought she was rude and clearly had no skills in doing the job. The food on the whole was tasty, hot and was nice however the lack of service and acknowledgement that errors had been made means I wish I had asked for money off the bill (something I had heard other people had done) and also I will.not be going back a real disappointment

Visited today, lovely little pub off the beaten track, lovely friendly atmosphere, food was good, chips were amazing ( seriously good, try them!), I had a pint of Manchester Craft beer which I've had a few times elsewhere but this was the best pint of it I've had, they obviously know how to keep their beer correctly. Our only negative is ( and some people don't mind this at all so don't use this against the pub, it's just personal choice), I think they had just lit the fire and it was a bit smokey inside and our clothes now smell of smoke. Apart from that, the place is great, give it a whirl, definitely try the chips and the Manchester Craft beer. Keep up the good work guys.

HORRENDOUS treatment by new staff! I met my husband and kids (after a stressful day if Christmas shopping) and I mistakenly left for home with our credit card. Instead of discussing the matter in a reasonable fashion, the bar staff assumed my husband was attempting to leave without paying. He proceeded to man handle my husband back to the bar to pay (grabbing his shoulder ). This is clearly entirely unacceptable behaviour. We live down the road and have been coming here for years, spending hundreds and hundreds of pounds, but I can safely say, we will not be returning or spending ONE more penny at this establishment. Disgraceful behaviour.

I’m not into posting bad reviews however feel I need to make others aware. I called in today for breakfast. The quality of the ingredients used was really poor. The sausages was inedible and the mushrooms aren’t fresh. Very disappointed. The prices are expensive too. £1 for a piece of toast. It’s cheap bread probably cost that for the full loaf !! Wouldn’t recommend and I wouldn’t go again. Disappointed

I recently visited The Old Original for a lovely Sunday meal, and I couldn't have been more pleased with the experience. My partner opted for the Sunday roast, and the roast beef was cooked to perfection — tender and full of flavor, without being pink. I went for the rag pudding with chips and mushy peas, and I must say, the peas were absolutely delicious! (as was the homemade chips and rag pudding). The gravy had a rich, meaty flavor that really enhanced the meal, not bland like some places can be. Plus, the portion sizes were generous, and everything was piping hot when served. The service was excellent, with friendly and efficient staff making sure we had everything we needed. I chose from the fixed menu, and ended the meal with a lovely slice of chocolate fudge cake for dessert, which was a real treat! The prices were very reasonable for the quality of food and service we received. The pub has a warm, inviting atmosphere, complete with a candle on the table, and the rural setting with its lovely views makes it a perfect place to unwind. While the car park is a little on the small side, street parking is available, so it’s not too much of an issue. All in all, I would highly recommend this pub. The food, service, and overall experience were top-notch, and I can’t wait to return soon!

The carpark at the pub is a revenue generator, i am being bullied buy high court enforcement and the DCBL for £100's of pound for parking on the carpark even tho i have proof i was in the pub on the date of the ticket. Pub wash there hands of it, i have been told there nothing i can do other than pay it. targeting there customers how low can you go.
