Went out post lockdown for a date night with my partner - we are professionals in our 50s. Was met by a surly doorman who wanted to know where we had been prior? None of the staff were wearing masks, and only a loose grasp of social distancing was in place. Real ale used to be good in this pub with the previous landlord but spotting a few cloudy pints I opted for a cider, the Mrs went for a large posh gin with all the add- ons. We found an empty table, didn’t look like it had been wiped down. About 10 minutes later we were told we had to pour our drinks into plastic pint glasses. When asked why no reasonable reason was given - so I refused and asked to see the manager. She came over and said that it had been a rough night and everyone else was doing it. I replied that if we were expected to drink out of plastic glasses we wouldn’t have entered the business or spent our money. I replied that we would finish our drinks that they had presented to us as their product - and leave she then insisted my wife pour a double speciality gin into a plastic pint glass. We left and shall not return under present ownership. The request not only seemed unfair but implied that we were untrustworthy or that the management were letting a very unsavoury clientele into this once great pub? With the plastic bags scattered about I made a personal assumption as to the cause of this unruliness …. I am so disappointed to see such a previously well managed and welcoming pub go so low- and would advise anyone adverse to recreational pharmaceuticals to await new management before visiting.

Bought a groupon voucher to attend here for a surprise Birthday meal, booked a table a week in advance. Arrived to find the restaurant completely closed, there was no attempt from the restaurant to contact me and let me know they were closed. This completely ruined what was meant to be a nice Birthday meal and to top it off I am now out of pocket as we had to get a last minute table in another restaurant and have to wait 2 weeks for Groupon to issue the refund! Definitely do NOT recommend!

We went all over the Trellech/Penallt/Newchurch area, farmshops and cafes were not open or shutting at 4pm (!). We went down to the Mill in Tintern and were greeted with rude staff, grotty atmosphere and triple prices.. So popped into the Piercefield on the way back to Chepstow. It was great! Very cosy atmosphere, welcoming down-to-earth staff, and cheap prices for food. It was served very quickly, good sized amounts and tasted nicely cooked - well balanced. We opted for pub classics such as fish and chips, lasagne, etc, as pubs do these sort of things better. Beer was good and not expensive. We were all nicely satisfied with it. Thank you! The Piercefield - a good reliable option.

Unfortunately, my experience here was disappointing. First, the staff were quite rude and unwelcoming, which set a negative tone. After ordering my food, I was informed it was a cash-only establishment. Considering it’s 2024, this is highly inconvenient. When I mentioned I only had a card, the staff reacted as if it was unusual, which felt dismissive. This outdated approach, combined with the lack of customer service, makes it hard to recommend this place. It’s only a matter of time before a more modern and customer-friendly chip shop comes along and takes their business. If you're in the area, I’d advise going further into Caldicot for fish and chips.
