Angelo's Fish Bar in Monmouthshire

Furious. After a long day a wanting a little treat, I went to this poor excuse of a fish & chip shop. Now I know a portion of chips isn’t cheap anymore but Christ, do not shaft the customer with a pathetic portion. The LARGE bag was supposed to be shared between 2 of us, but we had 12 chips each. Utter disgrace. I had no choice but to pop into another shop down the road to buy another bag and their regular bad of chips was bigger than Angelo’s large bag. If I was you, save your money and go elsewhere. Angelo’s hold your head in shame for mugging off your customers and being too tight.

I totally agree with margeo1234 . Firstly the staff were impolite. When I first walked in there was nobody behind the counter, so I wondered if they were actually opened , I spotted a chap at the back of the shop preparing food and I asked him if the shop was opened, he just stared at me for about 10 seconds, just when I started wondering whether this fellow could actually speak English he motioned towards a figure standing at the back of the shop partly obscured . It took this second person a long time before they actually decided to come to serve me. Then I placed my order for some fish and chips, I was just about to pay with my card when she said they only accept cash. I had to walk to the co-op to use the cash card machine before I could take the meal with me. When I got the fish and chips home the whole sorry experience was not worth it . The chips were hard and inedible and the fish had batter so fatty that it must have been cooked in a cauldron of lard. I will not be going back.

The fish was dry and tasteless, and the batter fatty and inedible. The staff impolite and unable to calculate the correct change. The chips were bad bad bad

Very overpriced, portion quite small and chips dry and possibly reheated. £2.85 for a basic pie and rest of the menu also seemed dear. Not worth the money

Don’t live in the area but my aunty does. For a treat I buy her fish and chips. Usually I buy it for her lunch. Which I must admit has always been tasty and the staff are friendly. But last night 15/12 food and service were not so good. The curry’s were made up in pots on the the cupboard without lids then warmed up in the micro wave ( I think they forgot to put ours in) it was freezing cold. We had about 10 chips each. When you pay £19.00 for two fish and chips not good value. Staff weren’t particularly helpful or friendly. Also why only take cash. Not many people carry cash with. Don’t think I’ll return

I visited last night, nice crispy chips not dry like some. No fishy taste like many chippys. Good sausage. They do pizza and desert too. Recommend

lived in Magor for nearly a year but never tried this fish and chip shop until now. I have to say its the best fish and chips that I have had for a very long time. Cooked to perfection and top quality fish, will be using this shop more often from now.

We called here for a chippy tea while staying nearby, the food was tasty and the service was fast and friendly.

We have been enjoying Fish & Chips from Angelo's for nearly 30 years! The fish and chips from Angelo's are simply the best ever, anywhere. Cannot be beaten! Portion size fairly massive, beautifully cooked fish, totally delicious batter and the chips, OMG, the chips are just perfection. Proper Fish & Chips. And always service with a friendly chat and banter. Truly serving it's community. Thank you!

Ordered for collection via just eat. The queue was starting to grow by 6pm but they smashed through the orders no problem. I waited maybe 10 mins to get the food. Kebab was delicious and so was everything else. Ordered a regular cod and I'm glad I didn't order the large because it was huge! I also saw brownies by the till and couldn't help myself so had one of those too. Definitely worth it. We'd come back in a heartbeat. Fast, reasonable prices and delicious.

Pulled off the motorway for some fish and chips at 8pm on a Fri evening and found Angelo’s on the map. The fish was delicious- lovely white large flakes, with a tasty batter and the chips were really nice too. Well worth it.

Good here is more than adequate (it’s fish n chips not cordon bleu) but they make customers feel like a nuisance. Have had this experience a couple of times but when you’ve waited 10 minutes and realise you’ve not even had the staff/owner make eye contact with you you realise that they don’t want to make you feel welcome. It’s the only fish n chips in the village which is why I use it from time to time but they are useless. 100% of the time. Useless. Always wait an age. Sullen, miserable service (particularly the woman who owns it) and, at best, average food. I’m writing this whilst in the queue I’ve been in for 20 minutes. 3 served in that time

Never a problem when I come in, staff are very friendly and always smiling, food is always hot and fish is always cooked fresh would recommend!

This is our local Chip shop and the quality over the last 30 years has been excellent The staff are always friendly and the service quick and efficient

What a gem of a place to find, traditional fish and chips, pizza and burgers and a full pasta option. Excellent service and a drop off at the Hampton hotel. Also you should see the cake counter - this is way above your normal chippy, in fact it has taken the take away to a new level of attainment

I ordered a 14 inch pizza tonight. I watched the Italian chef prepare the dough fresh, and then treated the base to plenty of meat and sauce. 15 mins later I was ready. The cheese melted lovely,and it was Cooked perfectly. Not greasy at all.The 14 inch did prove to much through. Next time I will order a 9 or 12 inch. This is perfect for most appetites.Highly recommended.

Always worth calling for great Fish and Chips. Everything cooked to order and for meeting the neighbours!

This place has gone down hill since the new managers arrived, not many staff at the bar We had a voucher for 25% off but did not have it applied and all the tables were reserved most from 7.00pm even though we turned up at 4.00 one table was reserved for 12.00 and hadn’t been cleared by 4.00pm....,come on! We were regulars here but won’t be from now on until it changes hands again, come back Chris you did agreat job now they’ve undone your hard work!

Best fish and chips in the area by far! They have a very extensive menu and the Do Is is always very tasty. They also do really nice pizzas, soooo pleased I moved to Magor :D

Food is always great just long waits and lack of acknowledgement but never had any issues with food itself

We called in for fish and chips on our way home to Cardiff. Had to wait 10 minutes as the fish was cooked fresh, but well worth the wait! It was still hot when we got home, the fish was really fresh, with a light and tasty batter, and the chips were lovely! Definitely recommend it!

Waited be served and while i was there the grey hair woman served was coughing and sneezing all over the place, the final straw was when she sneezed and wiped her face on the back of her arm, then went on to serve chips to the nest person. Totally unacceptable that anyone with even a cold should be serving fresh food let alone someone with no idea of hygiene.

A nice Family run chip shop with all the usual suspects on the menu as well as home made Pizzas. Everything cooked fresh and is piping hot when you get it home.

Visited several times yesterday will be the last time. The standards have slipped slowly, however the food yesterday (fish and chips) greasy dripping in oil low quality food. Shame really used to be good

This fish and chip shop is fantastic, the fish and chips are fresh and tasty, the doner Kebab is extremely tasty. We normally order through Just Eat so when we arrive the food is ready

No es a menudo que comprar comida para llevar y creo que wow! Cada vez que visita la comida es fresco, sí, tienes que esperar unos minutos, pero chico es que vale la pena.

stopped off on way home from Bristol to bridgend as is short stop m4 had fish chips and I got say was worse ive ever had no taste to chips or fish and to top it off was swimming in oil even had it all over my shirt terrible

Perhaps it's a northern thing. Perhaps folk in South Wales like soggy chips and badly cooked fish. We're from Cheshire and we're used to chips soft in the centre but crispy outside and succulent fish cooked in a light, very crisp batter. We didn't get that at Angelo's. It'll be a run down to Caldicot if we want fish & chips next time we're in Magor!

We stopped here after having a few beers at a local pub, and the food was excellent. It's a very popular choice, and worth waiting for, when it's busy.

Wow. Feeling peckish we called in but didnt want chips but fouund they did italian take away. Freshly cooked and full of flavour. My new takeaway nom nom

When they want to Angelo's can produce superb food, particularly the Fish and Chip side.However sometimes portions can be small , especially the "larger " portions . The staff can seem distant and the chips awful ,they can also be very hit or miss what time they open as well.But overall my family and I have been eating here for years , and the vast majority of food has been very good.Tip- Hold out for freshly cooked stuff, especially the chips!

well this is a fish and chip shop, with a takeaway intalian tacked on.Staff very nice and actually the fish was cooked fresh for us. Very nice tooHowever, the chips had obviously been cooked a while and were bearly warmand very dry when we got home. This used to be a vibrant shop, but now sadly so different

I find it hard to understand how a fish shop can exist and yet consistently make horrible battered fish. Its almost like a hard protective crust. Part as staff / owners are nice people, perhaps if they tried to get one thing right (fish and chips anyone_ and forgot the pizza, ice cream, cakes etc.

I've been to Angelos a few times and have had various things from the menu. Where it is all really tasty the portion sizes are very small for the price you pay. Especially when you compare it to chippies in Newport. They are lucky that there is no to little competition in Magor.

As the end of a half term treat I asked my four year old daughter what she would like to do. Her response was to go to fish and chip shop for fish and chips and a slush puppy. I went online to check opening time and it said 11.30. We arrived at 11.50 and was closed with closed sign up bit obviously staff inside preparing. We walked away and a very upset child, we walked back passed where clearly the owner said they were open but not opened the door. I then placed my order, with two young children in toe. People that entered before me received their food first. Rather a long wait and well slush puppies were not made up so another dissappointment. Finally got our food but was cold when got home ( 2 min walk away) and hardly any chips. Shame as food was quite tasty. Staff seemed to pay more time to talking to each other than dealing with customers

The takeaway Italian meal was absolutely excellent. The sea food Pizza was one of the best I have eaten. All the other meals provided for the evening were of similar quality. A really delightful meal.

I love this little Fish bar, not just for the excellent fish and chips but their home made pizza's..... don't go anywhere else but here for pizza

This place is great, run by a family of friendly italians. The fish is second to none, the deserts are lush too, I recommend the black forest cake :) scrumptious curry sauces and nice pizza's , I highly recommend a trip.

What can i say, friendly service, friendly staff and excellent fish and chips. As a bonus they even serve some great Italian takeaway dishes. Place is clean and they also deliver.

Absolute gem of a find, has never disappointed, great value on fish and chips and huge menu to choose from, have not tried the pasta bar yet but fully intend too. Very friendly staff

Live in Undy so this is our local, yet if we have the time we would prefer to drive to Caldicot as the chips here are at best average and occasional horrible. Its a shame, perhaps they need some more competition as all the Indian returns and take away are exceptional. Just to add insult to injury, they now sell cakes, pizza and sweets - just try and get the chips right guys - we know we are not alone in driving to Caldicot and sooner or later someone will spot the market, open up and you will be out of business

Great chips from Angelo's. We ordered a pizza for home delivery once and whilst it was tasty the topping had all slipped off the top given the way it had been transported. Bit of a shame. Well priced though and may try a delivery again some time.
