Piercefield in Monmouthshire

We went all over the Trellech/Penallt/Newchurch area, farmshops and cafes were not open or shutting at 4pm (!). We went down to the Mill in Tintern and were greeted with rude staff, grotty atmosphere and triple prices.. So popped into the Piercefield on the way back to Chepstow. It was great! Very cosy atmosphere, welcoming down-to-earth staff, and cheap prices for food. It was served very quickly, good sized amounts and tasted nicely cooked - well balanced. We opted for pub classics such as fish and chips, lasagne, etc, as pubs do these sort of things better. Beer was good and not expensive. We were all nicely satisfied with it. Thank you! The Piercefield - a good reliable option.

Nice pub well with a visit. Decent meals well prepared at reasonable prices, good parking and a decent pint.

Came in for Sunday roast. Meat was incredibly tough and half the veg was raw but as this pub is ALWAYS quiet with barely any people in it we were polite and didn't care to complain. Was allowed in with the dog and was WALKED TO THE TABLE AND SEATED WITH OTHER DOGS AROUND, then in the middle of dinner dogs were not allowed in. Will never recommend! Hope this clears things up for you moronic owner 👍 How about learn to treat your customers a little better and take some advice. Maybe even check your cameras!

we stopped there on our way to the forest for a walk with the dogs for morning coffee unfortunately the restaurant was open from 12:00 so we didn't take advantage of the morning coffee on the way back we stopped to eat something quick but unfortunately the portion we got of the soup of the day i.e. tomato soup and fries which I took for myself and the children quickly were in such small that we actually didn't feel that we ate anything and the amount was for a good portion so unfortunately I don't give a good opinion of this restaurant. additionally, there are no served outside of which there are several tables in the garden where children have a playground and the service suggested that I should return in 10 minutes to the bar after ordering to a table inside at the bar.. it's good that our friends were there who called me because the order was left at an empty table and if I had returned in the suggested 10 minutes I would have eaten everything cold...

The food was fantastic. We booked for Mothers day. The food was plentiful. We did not need to pay an extra £2 for a large plate as there was so much food. The turkey was very moist and everything on the plate was perfect! We enjoyed a prawn cocktail, roast Turkey dinner and apple crumble with custard. Our table was near the side door to the garden and people kept going out to the garden for a cigarette and coming back in so I think the positioning of the table was a bit too near the door. May just have been put there for mothers day but it was draughty everything someone went in and out . However cannot fault the service or the food.

There was only one girl working the bar and waiting tables, she was rushed off her feet but did a very good job. The same cannot be said for the kitchen! We were a table of 4, so not a large party. One meal came out wrong and was sent back. They had put the wrong sauce on and offered to put the correct sauce over the top!!!! One meal had a side order that didn’t arrive until after the main meal had been eaten so that was also sent back. The replacement meal was not cooked properly so again was sent back. This meant that only 3 of us actually ate a meal!! I refused to pay for the 2 meals and the side order but this should not have happened. At no point did anyone from the kitchen or management offer any assistance and the poor waitress was nearly in tears. There was a party of 10 in at the same time eating, plus other customers in the bar and the poor waitress had to deal with everything on her own. Disgusting way to treat a member of staff, she did her very best and we let her know that it was not her fault. We have previously run establishments like this so know from experience that this was seriously understaffed. Having sent 2 meals and a side back to the kitchen I expected somebody other than the poor waitress to come to speak to us but obviously they didn’t care enough about their customer service. I will say that the waitress deserves a medal and a pay rise, she also makes an excellent cup of coffee. We will definitely not be returning.

We visited this establishment Thursday lunchtime. Place half empty, we were told that we couldn't order food as the young bar person was the only one on duty that day. The two previous occasions they had run out of white wine.

Called in for lunch today on our way back from Tintern! There was no one around in the restaurant area and plenty of spare tables so we sat at a table for two by the window! When the older woman who works there came in, my husband went over to let her know that we were at the table and she was extremely rude to him! We have never ever been spoken to in such a manner by anyone when we’ve been out for a meal before and will never be back again! She told him to look at the sign which says to wait for a table and then moaned at us for not knowing what drinks we wanted, when we explained that we’d literally just arrived and hadn’t had chance yet to decide! Her manner was awful and totally spoiled our experience! I actually asked my husband in front of her wether we would even stay but he said that we may as well stay! The food was ok, I had fish chips and peas which was average and my husband had pie and chips which he was very disappointed with and said it was only chip shop standard and so very overpriced! He was expecting a home made steak and ale pie! Safe to say we won’t be back!!!

We arrived at 6.20pm 10 minutes before the pre booking of 6.30pm. By 7.10 we were still waiting to be served despite the meals being pre booked at least a week earlier and confirming what everyone wanted to eat. No one else was in the restaurant so why the delay 🤷‍♀️. When we asked was told no chef so a manager was cooking the meals 🤔. Why weren't we told this when we booked as I’m sure we wouldn’t have. When the food eventually arrived none of the 6 diners were enamoured with the food one meal being totally not what they ordered. No apologies no compensation. A birthday meal ruined ☹️. Won’t be visiting again. 😳

Lovely friendly environment, great value for money. Beautiful place with friendly staff, nothing is too much for them. Definitely recommend going.

Sorry roast dinner wasn't great. Roast potatoes weren't edible. Staff were lovely though, two girls serving, first time here eating, not sure what went wrong with the potatoes, second portion that came out were just as bad, I think they were re heated a few times

We booked a weekend away for the horse racing. We had a meal on Friday night and enjoyed it so much we returned on the Saturday night. Service was wonderful and food first class. The staff couldn't do enough for us and made us feel very welcome. We would definitley recommend and will be back. Thank you. *****

Excellent food, friendly atmosphere.

On arrival we entered into a warm friendly atmosphere and was then shown to our table, a drinks order was taken and we promptly received these. The menu is full of delicious dishes so many choices. Once ordered the food arrived piping hot , well presented and plentiful. We did experience a mishap with one meal it was requested the gravy came separate and this was explained twice to the server upon ordering. Unfortunately the dish arrived covered in gravy but no problem, it was taken back to the kitchen to have a fresh meal made, the server apologised and kept us informed of the progress. We all enjoyed our meals , we had a relaxing time and even went for desserts as the atmosphere was so welcoming and the menu very tempting! We were treated to a 30% voucher via email prior to the evening so enjoyed the discont. We found ourselves already planning our return visit. Thank you to the friendly staff and staff behind the scenes aka chef and assistants. We had a great evening.

We visited for lunch on a Saturday. The food was good but they seemed incredibly short staffed given that there were two large tables needing a lot of attention and only one waitress. We were a table of two and for some reason we were plonked in a freezing cold corner behind the two busy tables. It didn't make sense as the rest of the pub was pretty much empty, and significantly warmer. We eventually moved ourselves to another table which was more comfortable. After our meal, I asked for a decaff latte. The waitress had no idea what a latte was and said the pub didn't do decaff coffee which is odd. We ordered hot chocolates instead. They never arrived, despite asking for these several times. They were added to our bill though. Then when we gave up on getting any form of hot drink or service, we went up to the bar to pay. We joined a long queue as the bar lady was nowhere to be seen. Eventually the chef was called to go and find her. As we were paying she told us about a 30% offer off of mains during January, despite us making it clear we were not pleased with the service. I don't think a 30% off deal would be enough to draw us back unfortunately. Not a good experience and I hope it was just an off day for the place.

Spent 2 and a half painful hours here. A pub that doubled as an escape room. Couldn't pay to have someone take our order. Forgot items we ordered, server walked off half way through conversations, by the end just wanted to leave at any cost.

Last minute lunch with family. Food was hot and tasty, staff were accommodating and very helpful. Lovely and warm in the pub and plenty of parking.

Absolutely amazing, will definitely be returning. Loved the lamb shanks and the service was 10/10.

One of the worst meals out I’ve had and terrible Christmas “lunch”. We were booked for the 2:30 sitting, at 2:45 we were still stood waiting as our table had not been cleared from the last people, it was probably nearly 3 by the time we finally sat down. Starter came fairly quickly but was sort of ok pate swimming in a plate of chutney and about 3 very very thin, small bread type crackers. It was gone 4 before we got our main, which was incredibly disappointing. The food tasted microwaved and bland, I can’t see where the huge wait came from because it wasn’t fresh prepared food. It was about 5:15 we then got pudding but everyone was so tired and fed up we just rushed through it so we could go home. Unfortunately there were only 2 staff working the bar, food service and everything else. I really feel for how difficult this must have been for them but this led to absolutely awful service, tables weren’t cleared, cups weren’t taken away, i eventually ended up having to do it myself but you could never find one of the staff to ask for help. It was near impossible to get drink top ups because you had to wait at the bar for someone to show up or go past and ask for assistance, but it took a long time for them to actually get to us. This was not a cheap meal out, around £80pp just for food, and the service, food and experience just didn’t reflect this at all, it didn’t feel particularly festive or fun, the decor was a bit sad and not what i expected from previous visits to the pub. Unfortunately we ended our visit just glad to be leaving and very unhappy we’d spent nearly half our Christmas Day stuck waiting for such a disappointing meal.

Had a Sunday lunch yesterday and would like to thank the staff that worked under the circumstances of storm bert and the flooding that had occurred. Kim, Frankie and Chris (chef) were punctual and polite. The food was amazing and to see some of the festive menu items being served I look forward to returning and trying them. Would definitely recommend to anyone in the area.

Visited 8th Nov 2024. I must say I see an improvement. The pub was warm, we had a choice of tables, the staff were attentive without being over bearing. We had the steak and ale pie, whilst there wasnt much meat is was very tasty. So we enjoyed our stay and would go back again for sure.

We have been eating at The Piercefield for many years and seen many changes. We are so glad that after experiencing poor service on our last visit finally The Piercefield is back on track! We had the Lunch time smaller portion which was plentiful and cooked to perfection. Richard served us and we felt most welcome Good luck to all the team in making The Piercefield a place we can enjoy visiting once more.

Excellent food, first-rate service and very pleasant environment.

4 of us went here for an early evening 6:15pm booking to celebrate our son's birthday. The bar and restaurant was surprisingly quiet. We sat down on time and then left to read the menu. After a while waiting I went up to the bar to order, to be advised that our order would be taken at the table. A little while later the actual chef came over and took our order and apologised for the wait. The wait was worthwhile as the food was fantastic and came with terrific portions. We started with a large portion of nachos and sauces, (simple) only comment was some of the sauces were fridge cold, slightly warmed might be better. For mains there was a chicken burger / fridge fries a gammon steak with 2 beautiful deep golden eggs, chips and peas, a fish and chips and finally scampi and chips. No puddings due to the excellent portion sizes. Can't understand why it was so quiet, although I don't like really noisy places. Would recommend the food and with a little improvement on the service it would be 5 star overall.

First visit here the food was lovely, also the service was excellent. Also the prices are very reasonable and good value for money. Big bonus this is a dog friendly spot, you can take your dog into the bar area. All in a very enjoyable first visit, we will definitely be coming again.

Very good food staff atmosphere

I went to enjoy a real ale. Unfortunately the beer was Banks best and I suspect the cask was adulterated just like two other beers in Bristol. So instead of enjoying a good beer in the evening sun I get given ullage.

So disappointed. We visited back when I was pregnant 5 months ago and it became our favourite restaurant. Now I think there's new management and the food and service was absolutely terrible. It was inedible. They took over an hour to serve food. Gutted to say we won't be going back after such a positive experience.

Well what can i say. Went for Sunday Roast. No beef! And No cream for pudding or coffee!!! ( 2:30pm on a sunday) Soup was cold, mains nice, apple pie was terrible as apples were hard. The place was freezing cold. When asked if they had blankets for our elderly relatives, we were told at a cost of £5 each! Spoke to manager and she was just stand offish and rude. Only good thing about this pub was Frankie and the young waitresses who went above and beyond to try and make our meal enjoyable. Avoid on a Sunday as an absolute joke.

First visit and will definitely visit again, lovely food. Very helpful staff

Delightful pub that combines a warm atmosphere with a fantastic selection of food and beers. From the moment we stepped inside, we were greeted by the inviting ambiance, with comfortable seating that encourages you to relax and unwind. The menu features a variety of hearty pub fare, all made with fresh ingredients. The service was friendly and attentive without being intrusive. Our server was happy to recommend dishes and beers based on our preferences, which made the experience even more enjoyable It’s definitely worth a visit. I’ll be returning soon to try more of their menu!

Called in for Sunday Lunch. We were the 2nd party to be seated and four adults crammed onto a small table whilst a party of 2 were seated after us on a table for 6. We all ordered the Beef dinners and was told it may take longer as one of the cookers were not working, we didn't mind that at all. Dinners were brought out to us and the beef was not cooked. I do like pink beef but not with the blood still dripping. The Yorkshire and the roasties where the only thing hot on the plate. We sent one back to be cooked again, after chasing down a member of staff. We asked for steak knives also as we couldn't cut the beef. I couldn't eat it and those who did try was greated with mostly gristle 😔 the veg was also not cooked properly. We did complain whilst paying, the staff member was apologetic, however the experience was not good. I definitely will not call back there again this has put me off.

Having been to the pub previously and parked our motorhome in the car park and stayed the night as we were on a charity cycle ride around the perimeter of wales we enjoyed the food so much we decided to have Sunday lunch as we were coming from bath to Swansea after a week end away 4 of us ordered the beef dinners the presentation was outstanding, the veg came and we started to eat and then we all looked at each other as we uncovered the beef sorry to say it was hardly cooked raw red in the middle and gristly we couldn’t even cut it we had to ask for steak knives the veg was hard and not cooked enough and we had to ask for more gravy as we all had a spoonful on our plates There is obviously a problem with the food side of things now as previously the food was amazing The management must have changed from last time as we were greeted with a husband /wife and team We were so disappointed we will not be returning Regards Kim Hopkins

Went for Sunday lunch today and I was disappointed. The food was good, But the service was poor. It’s wasn’t busy and had to wait a long time. Also when they got our pudding orders wrong we were made to feel like the one’s in the wrong. They also charged us for extra gravy which I find disgusting seeing as there wasn’t a lot on the meals.

We went for a birthday meal, the food was delicious, very tasty. The staff were friendly and the atmosphere is very welcoming. Very clean and tidy and has a warm homely feel to it. I would definitely recommend Piercefield and will be returning there soon 🙂

I visited last week with family and the service was outstanding, and the food was absolutely amazing, cooked to perfection, one of the best meals we have all had as a family, we all throughly enjoyed it. I asked the young lady serving us for the chefs name and I believe she said it was Richard, so please pass our compliments on to him 😊

Had a lovely family visit to the Piercefields on my way through Chepstow. The service was quick, the food was great and at a decent price. The landlady was bubbly and funny. Would highly recommend!

Stopped in here for a beer on the way home. Had warm welcome from Chris the bar man. Who I then got to know. What an asset to the team. Beer was looooovely will most definitely make this a regular.

There was no white wine. I have never been in a pub with no white wine. The young lady serving was very friendly it wasn't her fault but extremely disappointing.

Sunday roast: They hadn’t lamb or chicken (13:30)and we had Turkey and beef ones. The vegetables where tasteless and no much greens, the potatoes were bland. The Turkey piece was so small that is difficult to see in the pic. It didn’t taste very fresh and a bit cold. I think that they have to improve it because the place is lovely and deserves a good Sunday roast. Lovely staff and surroundings. (I have corrected the meat we had. Still my message is that it is very poor both variety and quality).

Awful food a BLT sandwich bread was burnt and chicken over charred and dry the whole thing was tasteless Dessert was sherry trifle, I expect just that, it was a triangle of cake nothing like a trifle. Overall very disappointed.

Came here as we were pasinf through. The kitchen had just literally closed for food, but the lovely bar maid said she would enquire, and the nice chef said he would happily cook for us. We had a lovely meal there and would definitely return and recommend

What a shocking experience. 4 meals ordered, 2 of jacket potato with beans and cheese and 2 of veggie chilli. The jacket potatoes came with the bare bones of salad, missing numerous items listed on the menu. The chillis came out very small and missing several items listed on the menu. Basically the light (cheaper) version which is listed as not available on Saturday’s, the day we visited. When mentioned to the waitress, the chillis were improved and the missing items added, though it took much longer than it should have. The jacket potato salad was also mentioned and we were initially told, by a senior waitress, the salad needed to be paid for separately but after we corrected her, she said they never have any of those missing items as ‘head office never send it down’. We suggested that they shouldn’t charge full amount for a meal that has lots missing to which she shrugged her shoulders and said ‘head office set the prices’. She had a total disregard for our lack of satisfaction. The overall quality was poor too and overpriced even if it had been the meal as listed. Won’t be visiting there again and I suggest you don’t either.

Visited Piercfield for Sunday dinner, yesterday 07/07/24. We travelled up from where we live at Barry Island as our previous two visits earlier in the year for Sunday dinner was 10/10! We arrived 14:15pm and the pub was empty!! A couple sat outside with a drink. We asked the very young waitress, if it had been busy and her reply was, No! Yet, when I phoned to book, the girl said she could only fit us in for 14:15pm, strange as it had never been full!! My husband ordered Beef and I ordered Turkey. We waited approx 15 mins for our dinner to arrive. My husband had beef, stuffing, yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes and mash potato with hardly any gravy. Everything was really soft, even the yorkshire pudding was all soggy. I had the same but a turkey dinner, mine was swimming in gravy. Again it was all really soggy. A very small dish came with carrots, cauliflower and broccoli. The whole dinner, looked and tasted, as if it had all been cooked and reheated, in the microwave!! The dinner looked and tasted awful. Both of us left most of our dinner!! There were 2 young girls and 1 young boy working. Didn't appear to be any management around, when I enquired!! We complained to the young girl when I paid for our meal. I enquired if there was a new chef, she replied, "yes". There was no management to complain to, therefore I paid £12.95 for each dinner!! I think it is very unprofessional to leave 3 very young people, in charge of a pub, especially for Sunday dinner!! Please, anyone thinking of going for Sunday dinner, DON'T!! I will never visit this pub again, under this management and will certainly, warn my family and friends, to definitely avoid this pub!! Plenty of other pubs near Tintern Abbey, to visit and have Sunday dinner... Hi Kim, In response to my review, I would just like to clarify a few points. Yes, I agree it's great to see youngsters working and earning a wage, as you say, many their age group do not. We did not have a problem with the young staff. The girl who took our order and served us on Sunday was friendly

The food seemed to have been sourced from a jar, and the proximity of the tables made us feel uneasy, prompting us to request a change of seating. The service and staff, however, exuded elegance and warmth.

Fish and chips were banging. Service from meg, Alice and Zoe was great!

Be careful not to order the soup. The portion is absolutely unbelievably small!!!!!

Came for food. Asked to set up a tab at 7:25 and got a pint with no mention they close the kitchen at 7:30. Back to order at 7:37 and they won't take a food order. Totally unimpressed.

Had to wait an hour and a half to get food and when food arrived fish was off clearly bad management. staff helpful enough

My partner and I had been to this pub a few times before the new owners took over and we always had a good experience. We decided to come back to celebrate his birthday. When we arrived, we were quickly seated and given drinks. We ordered nachos to share as a starter and main courses. When we placed our order, we were the only ones in there for a meal. As time went by, more people came in and were served their main courses while we were still waiting for our starter. After an hour, my partner politely went to talk to the guy who was both behind the bar and serving tables, to check on our order. He was very apologetic and explained that the staff had asked for the kitchen not to be open today because they were not familiar with it, but the owners had refused. When the nachos finally arrived, the woman who brought them out apologised and explained that she normally works behind the bar but had to step into the kitchen due to staff getting used to the new kitchen. She reiterated what the guy had said. We decided to just have the nachos and drinks and go somewhere else, as we didn't want to wait for what could’ve been another hour for our main courses. The guy kindly gave us a discount and apologised again. Overall, the staff were lovely and the nachos were good but it’s a shame that our experience was sadly let down by what seemed to be poor management.

Lovely little pub that we stopped at on the way back from a long hike. Had a refreshing pint of cider. We didn't have any food as we were just there for a refreshment. Car park was spacious and clearly marked. Staff were welcoming and friendly. Service was prompt. Interior was warm and clean. Garden was well maintained and lovely to sit at. No complaints. I can recommend if you are in the area and want to a place to stop and have a refreshing beverage.

Excellent food deal. Steak was perfectly cooked. A steak and salad with G&T only £10. It was so good, when the bill for two arrived, we tipped another £10. Lovely gardens, wheelchair access, loads of parking. Great!

Lovely little pub for campervan stop over I had the 🥓 🍔 & fries with the beef dripping & Merlot sauce 👌 very very nice had it as takeaway to eat in my camper 🚐 the staff are nice friendly and welcoming with good knowledge of the local area.

We went in for lunch today to be greeted by 3 members of staff sat down...no welcome greeting...we were the only 2 customers in there so thought well the service should be good...How wrong was we...really slow... Our sauce didn't come out with our mixed grill and had to ask for a steak knife... Really annoying noise of a waitress emptying sauce from one bottle to another right behind us... A lovely pub but wouldn't be tempted to go back...staff need to brush up on their front of house skills...

Booked online but when we arrived no booking listed. Only Sunday roasts were available. Waited an hour after ordering before our food arrived. Food ok but could have been be hotter.

Found staff very friendly as soon as we arrived. The food was very good value, we both had steak, cooked perfectly, a great meal. Will definitely go back.

Great Live Music tonight. Eaten twice here already & booked next week for my birthday. Can't wait. The atmosphere is better than it's been for a long time 😁
