Finding a great sunday lunch is really hard, we have tried and failed many times even after driving a few/several miles from Newton Longville where we live. Finding a great sunday lunch that you can walk to and stumble back from is a proper treat, and that is precisely what we had today. I had the beef, husband had the pork, both very tasty. Vegetables were great as were the roasties, yorkie and gravy. We ordered the extra pigs in blankets and cauliflower cheese (both yum). The (mostly) young women bar staff and servers are delightful, attentive and fun. Paul the landlord is always on hand and meets and greets, which is a great personal touch in these times. Well done Paul, Ness and team. We will certainly be back for a sunday lunch (have actually booked with some friends in 2 weeks). Great job, thank you.

We pulled in our motorhome for a liquid refreshment and a short stop. The car park was very busy ( village show was on ! ). We entered the bar and ordered two pints of Timothy Taylor Landlord in dimpled handles , which was no problem. Upon request, the young lady said her name was Summer , although she seemed a little reserved initially, we soon had her smiling and chatting. We took our drinks to the attractive garden and sat at one of the many tables. Dogs are well provided for with numerous water bowls dotted around. At this point, a portion of chips was being carried out by a waitress, and I was so tempted to go in and order some, they looked perfect. Alas, it was not to be, as I had eaten earlier. We've passed through the village numerous times over the last 30 years , and it gave us a wonderful opportunity to stop. It appears the new owners and staff are doing a great job, and I wish them all the best and hopefully their business will thrive.

A real gem , the Crooked Billet is a comfy, clean, and beautifully furnished pub serving tasty, and well portioned food. The staff led by Paul, are friendly, professional, knowledgeable and always willing to help. This is well worth a visit for just a drink and chat or for a lovely meal. They have regular music nights, and special food nights. But any night is a great night to go. We loved it and thank you Paul and the team. Sue & Graeme ....NZ

Visited on a midweek evening and ordered a steak and kidney suet pudding. What arrived was a short crust steak pie with no kidney and only 4 morsels of beef inside. Such a shame for the price paid and the wait time of over 30 minutes for a shop bought pie. Service was hit and miss with very little attention paid to customers once food was delivered. Will go again for drinks only. Please sort your misleading menu descriptions.

Such a shame as this was a special lunch organised by my elderly aunt who treated us for our birthdays. The service was mediocre but what let it down was the length of time it took for the food to arrive and it was terrible. My husband’s ribs were over cooked and chewy - with a haphazard thrown over barbecue sauce. My liver was burnt and I had a tablespoon of peas with it. We didn’t complain as they didn’t seem to care or take notice. Shocking food - will not go back.

I have to admit to having been drawn to the Crooked Billet that evening first by O'Reely's Band who were playing, but also knowing the new landlord, I was curious. The band's space was ideal - and strangely enough, with such historic and low ceilings the sound was spot on. Our food was delicious; "up-market" pub food I'd describe it. Simple, well-presented, good quantity and quality. The gravy with my plate of liver deserves a special mention; yummy! Service was always with a smile and we instantly felt we were among friends, which actually was how the evening turned out as we reconnected with some we hadn't seen for, literally , years. The vibe in this pub is like that; a traditional pub atmostphere with clearly a very happy staff team, some of whom couldn't stop dancing! I'd strongly recommend you give this establishment a try.

We are local residents and have lived in the village through the past 5 or six Crooked Billet landlords (some should never be allowed to run a pub ever again) and I can honestly say it feel like a defibrillator has been used and kick started life back into the pub. A number of times over the past few months we have regularly ‘popped in for a quick drink’, had an impromptu 18th birthday and enjoyed numerous dining out with their new (tasty) menu. Each time the atmosphere had been welcoming, the service has been excellent and the food and drinks have been very good. Paul and the team are really trying to make it the heart of the village and it is starting to show.

Saved up to visit the pub for end of the month treat as the prices are a little high but had heard a lot of positive things from the Facebook site. Ordered the steak and kidney pudding and ribs. Unfortunately the steak and kidney pudding was actually a pie not the suet pudding I was promised, (and really looking forward to) and the contents were mush. After ten minutes my partner was told that the ribs weren’t actually available so everything was a little delayed. The bar seemed to be a little bit hit and miss and I waited a good while for a drink as there was no one serving. The landlord seemed selective with who he wanted to talk to which I assume may have been because we were younger than most of the people in there. I’m not sure I would recommend or go back I’m afraid.

The Crooked Billet had a good selection of drinks (both alcoholic & non- alcoholic) & a variety of foods on the menu (a shame the sharing platters both contain meat though). However, the food itself was disappointing for the prices charged. I ordered the Wagu Beef Burger for £18.95, it came with no salad, no coleslaw, stale bun & no sauce in the burger. Similarly, we ordered the Nachos and the tortilla were extremely soggy, and missing jalapeño but delicious dips (salsa, soured cream, guacamole). OK were the waiting staff, felt as if they hadn't received full training, and weren't particularly friendly nor polite. It felt as if they'd rather have a conversation between themselves, than serve us as the customer. To summarise, not my most pleasurable dining experience. Definitely drink here again but unlikely to eat here again, for the prices of the menu & quality of the food.

Lovely friendly welcome toasty warm fire and a nice atmosphere of a traditional English pub We ordered both food and drink . We had chicken pie and a steak & kidney pudding. Both were delicious. We booked an outside table in the garden for lunch. We could have eaten inside but opted for the garden. We managed a couple of courses before the British weather returned to normal service and we hot footed it into the marquee for dessert and coffee. The lunch menu is a little restricted, but there was plenty for us to choose from. Service was very good, very friendly staff but not overly in-your-face. The food was very good. We used to be regulars but had been put off by a change in menu and chef so that the food was more akin to an overpriced Harvester. But thankfully the old chef is back and the food was once again very good.I would never award five stars for value as I'd hate for any restaurant to feel like they can put their prices up, but let me say, we will go back.

The staff weren’t sure what the sides were that came with it. No children’s menu just a slightly smaller version for almost the same cost. My daughter is 4. Safe to say she couldn’t finish it. The beef and lamb burger was a slice of each meats put in a dry bun, with a pitiful amount of onion jam. The gravy was like water and the spuds needed to be cooked. Carrots were good. As were the Yorkshire’s. All in all we were a bit disappointed after hearing so many good things about it.

Music booming from the garden. In excess of 40+men in one group. Bouncers on the door. not sure what for as obviously werent dealing with social distancing. Poor organisation. No one greeted us. Asked for a table in the sun. Seated in the shade under a tree with the big party one side and a disco the other. Menu could do with looking at. The food was really nice but unfortunately the service wasn’t the best. We put our name down for a table and was asked to wait opposite the road where the pub was until they called us. We watched as other people were seated and had to remind them we were there. It was mistake and they apologised and said they couldn’t see us (even though one of the waitresses knew where we were because she took and served our drinks order?). No cutlery or condiments served when the food came so had to ask. We were eventually given wooden knives with metal forks as they had no knives available. The atmosphere and feel of the place wasn’t that nice so we won’t visit again, which is a shame because the food itself was lovely.

The food was bland, and was served without condiments, napkins and cutlery. After five (!) requests to the waiting staff we were finally in a position to eat our (now cold) food. The burger was drier than sandpaper. The chips were so salty I thought they'd been dunked in the sea. However, they were very quick to take payment - which, for the quality of food and level of service was exorbitant. Avoid at all costs.

I’ve heard a lot about this place having a good reputation. I can’t understand how. I’ve never encountered such rudeness at a restaurant before. We arrived on time for our booked table, and were waiting for a long time to be seated. We couldn’t see any staff so wandered in to see if we could grab someone’s attention (wearing masks), only to be treated like naughty children. We explained we had a booking for 5 but unfortunately 2 of our party had to cancel at the last minute and apologised. The man dealing with us abruptly walked off, a lady returned and took our name, then abruptly walked off. What was that about?? Then someone returned and showed us to our table. We were not given any menus or asked if we wanted to order drinks. Some time went by and my brother had to grab a waitress and ask for menus. He also had to ask if we could order drinks. We were waiting ages for them to come and they never did. After 45 minutes with no progress whatsoever, the waitress came over, no drinks in hand, “can I move you to another table, just we have a party of six...”. I honestly couldn’t believe it. I understand that two of our party was missing, and that they want to make best use of the space but we had already been sitting for almost 40 minutes, waiting 20 minutes for drinks. Not even an apology?! We just decided to leave, since they obviously saw us as a huge inconvenience. I was, and am still, absolutely disgusted with the attitude of the staff here, you couldn’t pay me to even set foot in that place again. If you want a pleasant evening I advise to avoid it or suffer the consequences.

Looks nice inside/outside usually but unfortunately didn't live up to the hype on this occasion. The young girl with the brown hair in charge of looking after the customers seated had a terrible attitude and didn't exude customer service. Every customer wish was a chore. The toilets were out of service so our group had to ask the girl for a radar key every time to the disabled toilets, which she pulled faces about because every query was a big ask.And if it wasn't straight away you were going to go then she was huffy. The staff made you feel small and uncomfortable. The other reviews about a titchy glass of wine being expensive is true. It's not displayed openly or online about how extreme the control measures are upon arrival.Safety is paramount yes, but rather uncomfortable.... when you are presented with no respect for the customers comfort. With a bouncer at the front place! Made to write down all these details and the temperature result he tasks from your forehead. You are made to write this down next to your details left out for anyone to read. He zaps your forehead out of no where and laughs like it's funny. It's such an off putting experience here. You feel like you are coming into one of those back street places for youngsters to kick off rather than a fine dining establishment.Toilets weren't very clean and the staff hygiene wasn't great. The food was delicious, the atmosphere was lovely the only criticism is that the staff should be wearing masks. I have been eating out and it’s the only place where the staff don’t have masks or a visor. Didn’t feel too safe when they came straight up to the table.

This is my normal localTook my best friend for a belated birthday dinner and I have to say it was absolutely fantastic! We was greeted at the front of the pub by two very nice door staff who registered us and took our temperaturesOne of the waitress staff was their straight away to take us to our table and took our drinks order I requested a bottle of Prosecco on arrival which was there..We ordered some nibbles while we was having a few glasses of bubbles to give us time to decide what we wanted Food came out prompt even though the pub was full we couldn’t fault the service The food was FANTASTIC! We then asked if we could move to the sofas after dinner which wasn’t a problem and that is where we stayed for the rest of the evening.. we felt very safe and looked after Will definitely return Would highly recommend! Thank you everyone who looked after us.. you made our evening a great one ( sorry we didn’t have any cash.. will drop a tip off for you in the week to say thank you)

Having revisited the establishment twice since the lockdown was eased we like the entrance system the mobile thermometer, track and trace. The protection shield around the bar. Staff , were up to speed and very friendly. The meal well priced served quickly.......my only issue was that there was far too much on the plate. Being of the age that we were told to clear the plate, I still do ....and it was so good that I couldn't leave a morsel.....would heartily recommend recommend.

Came for food, as advertised we came for the discounted food menu with the discount with £10 a head cut from the bill, wasn’t advertised that the fact that they stopped this within the first week of being advertised no staff members were trained on the fact that they was no longer following through with this discount, ended up paying full price which is absolutely fine. But it felt a little bit of a con after we had paid and no one mentioned it inc the manager which when it was brought to attention was offered pints as an incentive. Food was brilliant, but with the current guidelines needs to be made clear they are not within the discounted food and soft drinks.

2 hour wait for my food and when I asked when it would be ready the manager shrugged and said it’s nothing to do with him as he isn’t the chef. Asked for a refund which was refused.

Visited the crooked billet for a meal with my daughter this week, beautiful village pub with a huge garden and plenty of seating. The staff took full precautions with regards to Covid, from taking our details on arrival to sanitisers dotted about the rub/restaurant. The staff were very friendly/welcoming and the food was delicious. Have already booked to return next week with my family.

So happy to have the pub back open again. Had a few lovely meals already. As always lovely service and friendly greeting. Very happy with the way the team are handling the social distancing and I don’t feel that they have let it detract from the warm and friendly experience. Looking forward to popping down over the weekend . Would definitely recommend!

My boyfriend and I visited the pub for dinner last night and the service was wonderful. Although there was a long wait for food, which we were informed of before we sat down, we had a wonderful experience. We were offered bread and olives free of charge to have whilst waiting for our food to come out and once our food did come out it was delicious!! Was lovely to see the pub so busy and the service and staff were very accommodating. Will definitely be back soon!!

I’ve visited this pub a few times since the lockdown has lifted and I have to commend them on their approach to Covid. Social distancing is being followed. The pub and restrooms are spotless and customers and staff were very mindful of keeping distance. Temperature and track and trace details are taken on entry. Well done to The Crooked Billet.

As a villager the pub is at the heart of our community. We enjoy the time we spend there. As a family we often visit for drinks and for food. The service is excellent and we are always made to feel really welcome. We were so pleased when the new owners took over in November and have since then been regular visitors. The Sunday lunch is AMAZING. We've also visited in recent weeks and have felt safe - temperatures taken on arrival, track and trace information is taken and filed for safe keeping and screens between tables when eating inside. A one way system inside the pub means it's easy to socially distance.

2 hour wait for food, when the food arrived it was poor quality and wrong. When I spoke with the landlord/proprietor about the disappointment and the wait, he was unhelpful and bordering on rude. When I asked why orders had kept being taken for food, he replied he couldn't comment as he hadn't seen the diary or knew how busy it was. Surely, with COVID it's his business to know how many customers etc are in his pub. Wouldn't go again, even with the 50% off.

I have visited the crooked billet on numerous occasions since the easing of lockdown and despite being pregnant I have felt more than safe on each visit. They have implemented temperature checks on arrival, hand sanitiser and an easy to follow one way system. There are also plenty of tables inside and out that make social distancing easy to adhere to. I have had several different meals here now due to the high quality food and friendly service from both the main menu and the bar/garden menu. We visited on Sunday and had a lovely roast dinner with big portions, extra gravy and perfect roast potatoes. What more could you want! Glad to see the pub back thriving. It seems the new management have got it spot on in making everyone feel comfortable and offering quality food and drink in a cosy country pub! Looking forward to visiting when I’m not pregnant so I can take full advantage of the new gin menu!

I met my son for lunch, I have an egg allergy which I told them when I booked the table. Sarah the lovely waitress asked me about it as soon as we were comfortably seated. The starter I wanted had mayo and had an egg coating. The chef cooked it separately and gave me a yoghurt dressing. Delicious. My main course was equally yummy. Wonderful service and excellent meal

Pub grub, gone classy! Easily one of the best meals I’ve had with my family, generous portion sizes with prices you’d expect to pay in a more upmarket local restaurant. Absolutely delicious. They also handled safety of customers very well as we visited just after reopening from lockdown; our temperatures were checked on arrival and screens are placed all around the restaurant/bar to maintain social distancing. The staff were all very friendly and attentive too, really added to the overall experience. I’d highly recommend as we can’t wait to visit again!

Obviously had some doubts and concerns about going to the pub after lockdown but the management at the Crooked Billet have got it spot on. Arrived at the pub and was greeted with a quick temperature check by a couple of friendly security guys. We were shown to one of the many picnic tables outside-they seem to have spent time improving the garden as it’s much nicer than I ever remember it. Drinks had to be ordered inside which was fine, didn’t take long at all with all social distancing rules and guidelines clearly posted. Seemed like there was lots of staff too to help which was good. We ordered some food and it was fantastic. Not sure if they have a new chef or just new menus but great selection of snacks/mains. Spent a good few hours out in the garden it was a great afternoon. Will definitely be returning soon. Well done the Crooked Billet!

Visited for the first time last Saturday and arranged to meet friends travelling from the opposite direction. Arrived at lunchtime to find the car park almost full which is always a good sign. Shown to our table after ordering pre-lunch drinks whilst waiting for our friends. Super friendly staff, lovely atmosphere and plenty of room despite being busy. Expected to have to wait a while for our meals once ordered but actually everything was timed really well. The home made pies were gorgeous, with lovely pastry and very good amount of filling. The wine was lovely (though a little pricey) and the choice of starters was good. Would have liked more choice of dessert but that is because I have a sweet tooth. Highly recommend this friendly, attractive pub which is a chocolate box thatched building (beware low ceilings if you are 6ft plus!) with lovely food and super service - never felt pressured to eat up and everyone was served together - a nice touch when so many gastro pubs dont bother.

Once again, fabulous food last night. The cray fish and smoked salmon starter was wonderful. They did a special which was garlic rolled chicken in a burger bun. KFC eat your heart out, this was amazing! Then a home made bakewell tart which was beautiful. Great new chef! If you haven't been you need to try it!

My wife and I have been regulars at The Crooked Billet since we moved to the village 6 years ago - so we've seen quite a few ups and downs - but I'm delighted to say that it is definitely on its way back to its rightful place as a top class gastro-pub. Sonia and Russ are fantastic hosts - very friendly and professional - and the waiting staff are all very pleasant and efficient. We visited last night for my wife's birthday - our first meal there since the new owners arrived - everything was superb - we both had the crayfish and salmon to start - lovely - my wife then had a perfectly cooked steak and I had the steak and ale pie - a proper pie with pastry all round - it was wonderful!!!While we were there we had a look at the Valentine's Day menu - it looks absolutely amazing - something a bit special - so immediately booked a table - we can't wait for our next visit!!!! Keep it up guys!!!!!!

Whist I appreciate the pub is finding its feet again after a brief closure it needs to improve to become popular again and survive. The building was so cold as to be uncomfortable. The service was painfully slow and the food when it finally arrived was average. There were clearly insufficient staff even for the very few people that were there. It would be more understandable if it had been busy.I will keep and eye on future reviews and try again if it improves.it is a lovely village pub that needs food and service to match.

Came in back entrance so saw no signs about needing to register parking, staff also said nothing . Later sent a letter informing me I had a £100 fine for parking in their car park. Phoned pub, who said to appeal and would pay ‘admin fee’ only. Appealed it, sent a very formal letter informing me id still need to pay £20 else a debt recovery agent would get involved and given for the appeal I had to give my address not particularly friendly warning. However now given this situation thought I better leave an honest review, to help others wondering whether to visit. The pub is not dog friendly - mine had to stay in car, first pub experienced that in years! Food nothing to write home about, extortionately priced for what you get. Somewhere I’ll remember not to return to.
