The Cripple Creek Inn in Monmouthshire

Booked this for a birthday dinner having previously checked they could accommodate our dietary and mobility concerns. We were welcomed on arrival and allowed to seat where was best for us. The range of gluten free food available as a staple was very welcoming. The size of the starters was large, the oriental platter being a meal in its self! The quality of food was very good. Customer service was just right, helpful but non intrusive. All in all this was a lovely dining experience and we would definitely return again.

Turned up 'on the hoof' so to speak, and a table was immediately offered to us, even though the place was packed. The food - oh my word - I've never tasted anything so delicious. I had steak, cooked to perfection, and husband had sea bass, which he thoroughly enjoyed. It was just the right amount and we had room for dessert, which was also absolutely fabulous. We'd come to Wales from the far east side of England for a weekend and in discovering this pub, we found an absolute gem. Staff were lovely too. We will be back again.

Booked for Mother’s Day beautiful Sunday roast all homemade roast potatoes scrumptious desserts are 10 out of 10 apple crumble and lemon meringue so good plenty of everything staff very attentive and welcoming couldn’t do enough lovely atmosphere a lovely quaint old pub Definitely return again

We visited as a table of 16 for a 60th Birthday and we had a fabulous evening. The food was absolutely beautiful and all of the staff were fantastic, really helpful and accommodating. We have visited several times before and will keep coming back. Would highly recommend!

Had the steak over cooked fatty had Stilton sauce must of been a packet mix disgusting 8 of us wont be back lamb chops over cooked can’t really say anything positive about this visit

Visited today for my birthday looking forward to a hearty meal. Paid the bill, no quibble as feel this is feedback only Curry was very tasty, hot with plenty of tender pieces chicken. Came with pizza like naan however was disappointed by the lack of half chips that seemingly came with more rice. Brisket beef melted in the mouth, very tasty and plentiful recommend. Ham dish noted that the ham looked dry cured, as if it was jerky. Didn’t resemble cooked ham more like sliced gammon steak to thin slices! Probably wouldn’t recommend. Overall good but could give very good but know from visiting before and on Sundays your capable of delivering far better quality. Cannot fault the service staff!

Unfortunately it was cold in the restaurant while we were there. ( I did speak to someone who went a few days after us and they said it was cold). Several members of staff served us, none with a smile or greeting. We were not asked if we wanted anything to drink and we asked for wine menu which took ages to arrive. No water was provided on table. We were not asked if we wanted any condiments with our steaks. We’ve been to this place a good few times and it’s always been excellent. Hopefully this is just a one off.

Booked a week in advance for 5 of us. I note reviews can vary on here eg good/bad. We have been to this restaurant before without any complaints however, when we arrived for Sunday lunch it was very busy. At first they couldn’t locate my booking. We were eventually seated at the very back of the pub in what looked like an extension. The staff attitude and attention were poor an elderly lady(who we thought was a diner) told us the staff were new and not experienced. We ordered starters my grandson had halloumi sticks. I was shocked when they arrived and he said they tasted awful. They had been cooked in something that fish had previously been cooked in and did taste awful. I am just thankful he hasn’t got a fish allergy. What might be seen as a minor cooking error could have had fatal consequences not very professional !!!!! The overall service was very lacklustre and slow indeed I think because of where we were sitting they forgot us. My husband had to go to the bar and request our main meals 1hr 30mins after arriving. These were passable but certainly not the standard previously received. We were very disappointed. BEWARE IF YOU HAVE AN ALLERGY..

It’s a lovely cosy pub. However, the food was average and the staff were disinterested. Some of the dishes were better than others but we spent £500 and I’d have thought the staff would have been a little more friendly

We had the Christmas menu. Food was excellent but customer service needs improvement. Waiting staff were slow and not very attentive and our table was not cleared away. The decor was lovely but some background music would have created a better atmosphere.

Stumbled upon this amazing restaurant whilst driving to Pembrokeshire. We were hungry at just the right time! One of the best lunches we've had for a very long time. Chicken casserole was so tasty and served with divine mash. My husband and son both said their meals of pork belly and chicken pie were excellent. The restaurant was busy with the lovely log burner on. All meals coming out of the kitchen looked fabulous. The staff were all friendly and welcoming. We will be back!

Had Sunday dinner very poor standard meat cold vegetables cold had to send it back warm it up in microwave lamb tough to chew just taken to much on to many staff running around have got clue what's going on did complain had 20% discount off bill won't be going again been a chef for 50 years not my standard needs improving chefs to staff

Staff polite and friendly and couldn’t do enough for us, as a party of sixteen for a friend’s birthday celebration. Extensive menu and had something to suit everyone, portions are a generous size I had the whitebait and have seen the amount I had between two people, the mains I had the pork chop ribeye with mashed potato and a mustard sauce my wife had the scampi and again I’ve seen that portion served between two people everything looked appetising, food was hot and tasted great, a good variety of desserts, reasonably priced and for a Saturday afternoon the place was full. Overall a great experience and will definitely visit again.

My friend booked a table for six a good six weeks in advance, only to find on turning up there was no record of our booking. It was only by luck that as the customer foot print was low that we were able to get a table. When we asked what went wrong reference our booking, no explanation was given. This would never have happened under the previous ownership.

Fabulous food, had the belly pork, which was cooked brilliantly. Mash, mustard based sauce was so mild, it tasted nothing like it, my Mrs hates mustard and I told her to try it, she agreed. Everyone enjoyed their meal. also big shout out to the pork chop my stepson had, wow!

Absolutely awful partners chips undercooked, pork was strigie only 5 chips, I had pasta which was very bland chicken on top of pasta very tough this place is over rated I will not go again!!! Elderly lady shocking customer service

I never usually write a review, however I was completely overwhelmed by the service here tonight. I had booked for 16 people for a baby shower, and the whole experience was incredible. The staffs attitudes made me feel so relaxed and at home, they were prompt in all requests for food and drink. They absolutely went out of their way to ensure we had an incredible time. Having been many times before, I have always been blown away by they food, but tonight, even when catering for 16 people, every single meal was gorgeous. Thank you to all of the team for their work tonight.

We came here as a small group of about 10 to celebrate our friend having a baby. We had put a few wooden baby confetti pieces on the table. A lady who I am assuming is the owner came over and started looking at the table saying about how it will ruin her dishwasher despite us repeating several times they are wood not paper confetti and we would be taking them home with us. She also then asked why we had moved chairs and suggested a chair on the end of our table was to close to another table which was reserved even though we had moved them down slightly to ensure there was space. The old owner was so accommodating so this took us back. If you have an issue with such bookings then don’t accept them. Food was ok, nothing special. Waiters were really helpful and lovely.

This place is absolutely fabulous. We booked a lunch for 4 on a wet day. We were made very welcome and had fantastic food. Josh and Arran were great and VERY helpful. Will definitely be back.

By the off chance popped in, staff very accommodating and gave us a table quickly, seating us and settling us in. Orders taken timely with turn around for food and drink also turned around timely. Food was hot and tasty, some veg hard (which is the norm for all restaurants) where I’m fussy and like it soft. Yet I managed to enjoy and eat it all the same. Every time I have visited this place it’s very accommodating, food is enjoyable and staff are very pleasant and welcoming. Highly recommend this place to all just wish cynical people would see the best in this place, please be patient as it’s busy and just relax….stop constantly living life in a rush and being disgruntled with others who try to provide a great relaxed service.

Crap!!! 2nd time here. 1st time waitress dropped food and dishes everywhere whilst collecting from table. 2nd time tonight, thought, give it another go. Awful! Served 3 meals, 4th served on floor. Offered to replace. Fair enough but 45mins later waitress said your steak won't be long. Everyone had eaten except 1 person out of 4. Told them to shove it. BTW. We were 2 couples celebrating 32 years andv31years anniversary. When paying was told,,,, oh we gave you a round of drinks and we didn't charge for the steak !!! Are you for real!!!! You shouldn't have charged full stop. Twas a shambles for the 2nd time. NEVER AGAIN

We were staying in the area and our hosts recommended this restaurant. We ate here two night running and had delicious meals both times. The menu is extensive so there’s something for everyone, we asked for one meal to have mash instead of chips and this was done with no quibble. I had beef pie with chips and veg., the pie was absolutely gorgeous, packed with lovely tender beef. Next night I had the lasagna, also perfect and a very generous portion. My husband had the biggest pork chop we’ve ever seen, and loved it, he also had the veggie chilli which was fab. The desserts were beautiful, I had no room, but he had the raspberry trifle, and loved it, with pavlova on the other evening, equally good. The staff here are really friendly and the service quick whilst still being attentive. The rooms are nicely laid out, and comfortable. We would recommend to anyone and if we’re in the area again will revisit.

We came for a birthday meal we was a little disappointed as it’s definitely not what it used to be portion sizes have reduced and prices have gone up, the garlic mushroom and bacon sauce has changed and was just like hot cream with mushrooms in it, but the positives was the staff were great service was good couldn’t fault them. And the dessert was actually good. We have ate here multiple times and can’t say we will be rushing back unfortunately.

We visited for Sunday lunch. The food was excellent and the pub itself is lovely. It is very well presented and clean. There was plenty of things to choose on the menu (not just standard Sunday roast) and the portion sizes were large. It was not overly expensive for what was a lovely meal. The waiting staff were very professional, attentive and very cheery, despite it being busy. Waiting time was acceptable and the waiting staff kept popping back to see if we needed anything. There is a downside however and that is the female members of the staff. There was a lot of giggling and sniggering at the bar area, which was not directed at me... I don't think..., but was never the less uncomfortable and they all came across as downright rude (the older lady especially so). It's such a shame, as it presents as unprofessional and it gives the impression of being superior, or not caring about their customers. It's always busy, so they possibly don't care as much as they should.

What a fabulous experience out with friends. Fantastic food which we all enjoyed, friendly great service, nothing too much trouble and kept checking that we had everything we wanted and was enjoying our meal. We would thoroughly recommend this restaurant and look forward to returning again.x

Stopped in on the way back from Abergavenny as we were both hungry & while in the car park I thought I'd just check the reviews on here. All mostly negative & I had second thoughts but I know how TripAdvisor can be misleading sovthen checked the reviews on Google & what a contrast all really good so we chanced & are so glad we did. It was absolutely faultless & the staff were amazing & friendly. I was about to order a steak when I saw the pork chop on the menu & as I looked the table next to us had their meal brought out & it was the pork chop, I didn't hesitate & ordered one for myself & my wife had the slow roasted pork belly. WOW! absolutely awesome both of our meals & so glad we didn't drive off after seeing the reviews on here & also glad we didn't order starters & to be honest we didn't even look at the desert menu as we were both absolutely stuffed & couldn't have managed one in all fairness. I am myself an avid cook & a self confessed foodie & my son is a chef himself so I do know a bit of what I'm talking about when it comes to the hospitality industry & good well cooked food. We are definitely returning shortly as this place is a real gem.

we visited for a birthday party, most of the food was to their usual standard, one meal was not, the lamb chops were very very tough, and not nice at all, several items of the cutlery were not clean from previous use

I was reluctant to leave a poor review, but it seems that the current owners just aren't listening to, or just don't care enough about, customer satisfaction. It seems that we aren't alone in feeling very disappointed with the service and food. We too were made to feel quite uncomfortable with whoever came to take our order on Saturday evening. Several years ago it was a very different story and we were made to feel so welcome. The food wasn't to our liking - the batter on the hake was too hard, as were the peas, and the sautéed potatoes were not cooked enough. Any decent restaurant will ALWAYS ensure that someone comes to the table shortly after the meals have been served to ask if everything is alright so any complaints can be rectified. We were so looking forward to enjoying a lovely evening out, but sadly this didn't happen.

We were looking for a pub for a quick meal and popped here. They were busy but had a table for two. We sat down and got a drink and having looked at the menu tried to order. After a while of no one comi g near we asked if we could order only to be told that there was a strict rota on ordering and we could only order when it was our turn. We had to wait over half an hour before we were allowed to order! Food was fine but service needs to be more customer friendly,

Was suprised we got a table here for New Year’s Eve with such short notice and for 8 people… well now I can see why. There was a female member of staff (apparently the owner?) with the worst attitude I have ever encountered, we asked if she could move a part of OUR table so that our pram could fit in. To this, she was rude and was raising her voice at us completely embarrassing us infront of fellow paying customers. Will never return here due to this foul woman.

As a party of 8 including 4 children ( 2 of which were small babies) we were met with a challenging and unhelpful staff member. Upon arriving we requested some assistance with our children prams, upon which the staff member publicly shamed us for having prams with us and told us she would not being making requested accommodations to situate our prams. This meant through the duration of our meal our babies were passed around the table for comfort having not being able to lay in their now collapsed pram. This led to babies becoming unsettled and the same member of staff making many remarks to other customers about the noise of the unsettled babies. As well as this she did not approach us once to check if we were comfortable with the arrangements despite being able to see as a large party we struggled with the small space! I believe New Year’s Eve to be a family occasion and if this establishment has a prejudice against families of small children it should be highlighted on their website. Unfortunately we paid an extortionate amount for food and drinks to feel judged the whole time. Will not re returning and certainly will not be recommending to families.

We had booked (paid a deposit and chosen our dishes) a Christmas evening meal and were looking forward to our visit. On giving our name, we were rushed to our table and were asked what we wanted to drink before my husband had arrived (parking car) and before we had taken our coats off and sat down. We had brought along an elderly relative and she did become a little flustered. A rather officious lady came to check our order and fortunately my husband had recorded our choices at the time of booking so we were able to clarify any complications. The first course was okay but the prawn cocktail had a large piece of smoked salmon in it that had not been chopped up as it should have been. The main courses were very disappointing. The duck was overcooked, as was the turkey, the potatoes had skins like leather and the vegetable were sad and unappetising. The orange sauce for the duck was bland. We did not stay for desert. Cooking for large numbers at Christmas must be difficult and pre-prepared food obviously makes the task easier for the chef but overall this was an average and lukewarm experience. We sharen't be booking a Christmas meal at The Cripple Creek again.

I had the the fresh seafood platter. Included in the description of this dish the menu reads scallops which is plural - more than one. There was only one scallop on the plate, the menu should read 'and a scallop'. This is my only real gripe.

Excellent food and service as usual. First time taking the grandkids and they loved it. Their new favourite place to eat.

Will not be returning. Greeted by an awfully rude member of management behind the bar who spoke to us in a very very rude and obnoxious manner. After I thought the situation had been dealt with at the bar, the same individual also came to the table me and my partner were sat at speaking to us in a rude and abrupt manner in front of other customers. Completely flavour less lunch , no flavour reminded me of school dinners, boiled frozen vegetables carrots, peas cauliflower. Roast potatoes were also tastless,I believe they were also frozen Turkey tastless. No wonder people were using lots of sauces! A complete waste of money .
