When standing outside the establishment I thought that it would be a basic cafe that would sell basic food. Oh how I was wrong! Stepping through the welcoming door I was hit immediately with the heavenly homely smell (which put my nerves at ease). On first impressions I thought the dining area was small but cosy. The tables were set out for a group of four or three to sit and enjoy a quiet meal together. The table cloths had a retro look to them which followed the retro theme of the pictures hanging upon the warm colour of the walls. The chairs were relatively comfortable and almost vintage - following the retro feel. Every table had an array of sauces for each customers' picky preferences (I'm a tomato sauce kinda girl). Upon arrival we were greeted with a cheeky smile by the amiable owner Derek which made everyone feel as though they were a regular customer just popping in to order their usual. Once we had chosen our seats and we were settled, Derek came over and asked each person what they would like to order, his cheerful disposition was reflected in everyone which created a comfortable atmosphere. I had ordered the 'Bacon and Egg sandwich' which is a favourite breakfast food of mine. I was curious to see if the mighty Derek's sarnies could beat the bacon and egg sandwich from a takeaway bakery just up the road. Whilst waiting for our food we were served our drinks, I had chosen Coca-cola. I was pleased to see that Derek sells his drinks in cans - which in my opinion any drink that is sold in a can tastes automatically better than if it were in a bottle. I opened my can and after hearing that satisfying 'tsss' I took a sip. The cool drink tingled my tongue before running down my throat, refreshing! The wait for our food was surprisingly short, I was very impressed. Derek hand served each meal to every customer which I think is important as is develops the relationship between the owner and the customer. When my meal was placed in front of me, again, I was pleasantly surprised. The size of the bun was larger than my hand! I opened up what seemed like a treasure chest and saw the yellow gold. JACKPOT! The oozing yolk from my egg had been spread all around the crispy bacon and buttered bun. Absolute perfection.I grabbed the tomato sauce eagerly and spiralled it around until the perfect amount was applied. I picked up the whole sandwich (which was actually quite heavy.. for a sandwich) and took a bite. A mix of tomato sauce and egg yolk dribbled down my top and landed on my jeans. Did I care? I most certainly did not. The combination of all the flavours and textures: salty bacon, fried egg, creamy butter and soft white bread worked extremely well. The egg was not overcooked so the yolk remained runny and the bacon was not chewy. My plate was cleared within minutes. Bite after bite the flavour continued to delight my taste buds. Once my plate was cleared Derek came to collect it to avoid the table becoming too crowded. Derek then returned to the table and presented me with a lemonade ice pole. I admit I was shocked as it was completely unexpected. I accepted what I assume was treat and began to consume it. The sweet, frozen ice cooled my palate and acted almost like a sorbet. It was a perfect end to a perfect experience. Thank you Derek for your fantastic service and food.

When we arrived it had a very welcome tone to it. This was accompanied by a very nice welcome by the owner. We proceeded to sit down and were asked what we would like to eat. There was a very friendly mood like we were usuals and go into the cafe every week as we were ordering. It was not a long wait at all for our food but even if it was longer it wouldn't of been bad because everyone was chatting away and there was a lot of comfort throughout the whole trip of being there. When the food did come out I was most definitely not disappointed even though I am not a picky eater I know when I am eating top quality food and this was the case. I had a wonderful sausage sandwich in front of me and not once did I think about leaving any on the plate. Everything from the actual sausage to the bun. Even after finishing the sandwich I just felt like sitting there and embracing the atmosphere. What made the stay even better was the fact we got free ice pops. Now some people might think this is a pointless thing to write about but I think it was a nice gesture which topped of a great visit at the Crescent Cafe. Kelsey

You know if you'll enjoy an establishment when you receive that warm, family friendly tone. The Crescent Cafe in Dunston offers great food, great service and a happy owner, friendly enough for a chat. The menu is extremely large, and I don't mean the choice of food. The whole back wall is covered in different meals and drinks you can order, written in chalk for that warm, pub feel. After receiving the food, with little wait, we enjoyed tucking into the full English, piping hot and larger than I expected. We traveled there as a class, so conversation was flowing as the food was sizzling in the kitchen. For the service being only done by one man for around 10 people, it was definitely to be admired. I absolutely loved the food, service and had an amazing time with my class.

As we had a nice leisurely walk down to the crescent café, which is better known simply as 'Derek's'. There was a general buzz radiating from some the students of sheer anticipation of what lies ahead. As we reached the door we quickly realised that we were going to struggle to all fit in as the café was already full. Of course, with the appearance of a mix group of teenagers with hoodies on, the elderly customers quickly left the shop and this created room for us to be seated. The first thing that I noticed was how well coordinated everything was. The blue and yellow paint on the wall matched perfectly with the colour of the table cloths. Maybe not the greatest choice of colours to be block painted together but it certainly matched well. Upon further inspection of the 'menu' (a black board behind the counter with the meals drawn on with chalk I realised a majority of the foods had been shortened to make the menu look more informal such as ‘mayo’ for mayonnaise and ‘mush’ for mushroom. This combined with the general pleasant atmosphere made me think that I was going to have an enjoyable experience even if the food wasn’t up to much. Once we were all seated and relaxed, we ordered our drinks out of the fridge and they were brought to our table. After some confusion on my table as to where Derek was as he was nowhere to be seen and couldn’t have been in the kitchen as we could clearly see in, he appeared. Resting against the door frame he was almost taken a back about how many people were in his place. After a comical comment about the amount of people in his shop, he then enquired about what meals everybody will be getting. With a list consisting of all day breakfasts, chips in various sauces and a desert, most people would normally start panicking to make sure everything was out on time. But Derek took it all in his stride, quickly and efficiently punching the meals out of the kitchen. I had ordered chip butty with curry source and eagerly anticipated my meal. ‘Whose havin’ chip butty with curry sauce’ shouts Derek from the centre of the cafe floor waving the plate around. I signalled to him that it was me and he then took it straight over. As the plate hit the table I knew I had made a good choice. A big bun, cut in half, lying open was filled with piping hot chips and covered in curry sauce. The smell was enough for me to want to delve straight into it however one of my friends had beaten me to it. His hand lunged straight for a chip I had also seen and was going to eat first! A huge chip hanging out of the side of the bun. Drenched in curry sauce. Perfection. I didn’t realise how hot the chips were until he scoffed the chip then was left gasping for air and drinking half of his strawberry milkshake. Karma certainly came and got him that day. I then went to reach for my fork, so I didn’t look like a complete animal, so I could start eating the plate of heaven that lay in front of me; however there was no fork to be seen. I had been miss out when the forks had been handed out, as I looked up to find Derek and ask for a for, a hand appeared over my left shoulder holding onto a fork. Derek had realised I didn’t have a one when he handed the meal to me, that’s good service! I was eventually read to tuck into my meal. I looked down at the pot of gold, scooped up a fork full and ate it. Wow. The perfectly cooked chips went with the curry sauce like Fergie went with Man Utd. Perfectly. The curry had one hell of a kick to it but that made the whole taste even better. As I looked around the small cafe I could see smiles of delight on other pupils faces as evidently, their meals were as good as mine. Well, perhaps not quite as good as mine, nothing could be as nice mine. This wasn’t just any curry and chips; this was Derek’s curry and chips. Everybody quickly cleared their plates and looked extremely satisfied with the meal they had just received. That was it. Our trip to Derek’s was finished. Everybody came with eager anticipation and had left with a full head of knowledge for writing an article and a fully stomach.

Today I embarked upon a new cafe, a little cafe tucked away in Dunston, The Crescent cafe. I entered this cafe with a relatively low expectancy. All of that changed when I entered this small cafe. With an instant warm feeling, greeted with warm, happy people and the smell of bacon coming through from the kitchen made it a good first impression. The table and chairs are all fairly close, making a warm and cosy environment suitable for any age. There was a wide range of sandwiches, breakfasts and drinks, all reasonably priced. The words ‘mushroom’ and ‘tomato’ had been shortened to ‘mush’ and ‘toms’ giving the menu an informal image. The cafe was well decorated; the tables and walls with matching colours of yellow and blue gave the cafe a refreshing, welcoming image. A small notice board read ‘This is not burger king; you don’t get it your way. You take it my way, or you don’t get it’. A humorous little notice board was the focal point of the food counter giving the cafe an old, rugged and traditionally British aspect. The cafe had a wide range of freshly made pies and puddings adding to the traditional British image. The cafe also took money for a wide range of charities giving the owners a caring, nurturing image. As the food came out the smell and look of the bacon and eggs were greeted with open arms by everyone. The food was all terrific and the customers were happy to take it the cafe’s way. Traditional British food was served. Bacon, eggs, toast and apple pie and left the customers more than satisfied. Making the customers looking forward to their next visit.

Crescent Café Review Café reviewer Gary Dodds and English class venture ten minutes down the road to try some of the local cuisine at the Crescent Café. “An A Level English class take a trip to a café? What a tremendous waste of time! Aren’t they supposed to be doing work and reading novels and such?” is exactly how most people would react to hearing about this outing. However, it wasn’t as pointless as it may seem, otherwise, why would I be writing this review? It all started when we had to write a review on Kingsmeadow’s canteen. In my review, Dunston’s very own Crescent Café made an appearance. This gave one of my English teachers the idea to organise a trip to the café, in which we would get food and drinks and take in the scenery of the café, all in order to write this very review. I’ll start with the food; Amazing. I expected a lot from a café in Dunston and I am pleased to say my expectations were exceeded. I got a small breakfast which consisted of bacon, egg, beans and toast. Usually, this would come with a cup of tea, but I had already got a can of Monster, so the tea would have been redundant. All of this for the price of £3.90, which in my opinion, is reasonable when you take into account that you get to sit in the warmth of the café at a table and eat it, unlike up the road at the Wheat Sheaf, where a bacon sandwich with an incredibly small amount of bacon in it costs £2 and you have to eat it out in the cold or wait until you get home to eat it. But this review isn’t on the Wheat Sheaf. I’ll save that review for another time. Next, the scenery. Most cafés these days are very bland and don’t particularly focus on their appearance. The Crescent Café, however, is different. The walls and table tops are colour co-ordinated: light blue and pale yellow on the wall and a light blue and pale yellow pattern on the table; Fantastic. A professional interior designer couldn’t have done better themself. The menu was a very nice addition the café. It was a large blackboard with your food options written in chalk, which I liked very much as it felt traditional. It was very well placed as well, so when you walk past on the street, it catches your eye and the writing on it is just big enough for the average person to be able to read from outside. The sauce bottles were also very traditional, the long and thin look added to the authenticity of the café. On the menu, there were well placed contractions, such as ‘Mush’ instead of mushrooms, which I thought was used very well. On the fridge, it even had a bit of humour for the customers. A sign that read ‘This is not Burger King. You don’t get it your way. You take it my way, or you don’t get the damn thing.’ Which I personally found funny and so did the majority of my class. In conclusion, I enjoyed our trip to the Crescent Café very much, as you probably guessed from the rest of the review. I would recommend it to anybody passing by with an empty stomach.

Retro wall decor and UK top 40 blaring from a retro car bootable radio. It was all very retro. The crescent cafe in Dunston (Derek's to the regulars) is a place that can only be described as somewhere you'd take your to and she'd say something like "ooo I like that wallpaper" or "ooo I wonder where these place mats are from". It's just so retro. You really couldn't ask for much more than a canvas of a New York taxi on the wall as you're about to tuck into cheddar and rarebit with locally sourced zucchini. That cheese on toast with salad to me and you. You see I really wonder whether the whole retroness was planned or whether it was just a coincidence mind you I hardly think it was planned as the only thing that looked as if any planning went into it was the terribly ingenious sign in the window that implied "this isn't Burger King you get it my way or no way". And of course I'm being sardonic it clearly wasn't Burger King however I do wish it was because I'd've been able to complain about my 'cheese burger'. However my cheese burger was the least of my worries as the local punters started to pile in for their daily dose of Derek. Derek's food of course... The whole experience made me feel like I was on the losing team of the apprentice when they all go and basically give sly comments about each other in that awful industrial estate cafe. It really was the industrial version of Derek's cafe. I really felt like I was losing and I only wanted to eat my cheese burger. It really isn't key that you get some new in-date decor but if I am ever I have the pleasure to be blessed with your presence ever again Derek, I'll be taking out not eating in. I mean don't get me wrong he's a lovely bloke, it's just the whole situation of being sat next to old grannies clearly losing the plot and having a view of a broken glass pane. It clearly is no fat duck restaurant and Derek is clearly no Heston Blumenthal, however what Derek does offer is very good customer service and my visit to The Crescent cafe was well and truly a once in a life time experience (literally).

Walking into the Crescent Café and seeing the blue and white wallpaper, traditional chalk board menu and plastic tablecloths all had a very retro feel about them which made the place seem immediately more comfortable and inviting. I quickly scanned my eyes over the small, cosy room and felt pretty satisfied with the overall cleanliness. Now moving onto the menu, all options seemed pretty familiar and homely. The menu consisted of traditional English food like chips, jacket potatoes and full English breakfasts. After much deliberation, I finally decided to have chips with gravy. My food arrived fairly quickly and I immediately took my first bite. The food was extremely tasty and very filling. All in all, I was very satisfied with my visit to the Crescent Café. The food was lovely but the best part of the experience was definitely the service as the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and would definitely visit again.

The crescent cafe. A simple but effective name. Many people tend to go there for their daily meals: breakfast, dinner or possibly just for a snack. As I walked into the cafe, it was pretty full however it isn't very spacious infact it's very small. The school toilets could possibly be bigger. The layout consists of blue and yellow looking walls which out-stands but it clashes together. I also noticed that the windows were dirty which was quite a put off.Another thing I noticed was that in the top left corner of the room, the window was smashed which made me feel uneasy. The table clothes also clashed as they were the same colours as the walls, but this gave it some style I suppose. The salt and pepper shakers were very basic and not very clean, same goes with the ketchup bottles; they looked older than the cafe itself. The glass counter also wasn't up to good standard either as it seemed kind of grim looking. As the food arrived, the smell was admirable which made my mouth water from the minute it left the kitchen. For my meal, I ordered chips and curry sauce. The chips were very crispy and contained lots of flavour which was lovely. The curry sauce was ok but it was a bit spicy for my liking, the meal was generally good. The plates and cutlery which I used were very clean but I thought they had a basic pattern and were dull looking. The overall many was fairly cheap and sounded very tasty as well as the drinks. The staff were very friendly and entertaining as well as welcoming, they made everyone feel comfortable in the environment. There was a friendly atmosphere and the owner seemed very pleased about the amount of business which he was getting, they also joked around with everyone. The outside of the cafe was quite busy, full of casual people. There were many cars passing by which made it noisy and there were many decent, well owned shops nearby. Overall, I thought the Crescent Cafe was a pleasant atmosphere. However, I thought the stucture could have been better and more well looked after. For a rating, I'd give it a 3/5 because the food and staff were really lovely but the interior wasn't up to scratch.

The Crescent Cafe was actually quite a pleasant place to eat, not too bad. Anyway the plate of chips arrived; I was surprised at how nice they were. They were crisp and golden on the outside and fluffy on the inside, nothing to complain about really. They weren't served cold either, my impatience got the better of me and I ended up burning my tongue on the first bite. The best thing about the Crescent Cafe, though, was the staff. The people that work there were probably some of the nicest that I have ever met. They made you feel comfortable and right at home as soon as you walked through the door. There was something homely about the little cafe; this is probably the main reason I would want to go back there. The service was some of the best. There was just something about it that I really liked. Something else that was good about the cafe was the humour. Through the staff and the little quirky sign, ‘this is not Burger King you don’t get it your way, you make it my way or you don’t get it’. I like this, it shows that they don’t take things too seriously and they are those kind of people that you can have a laugh with. Overall, I would say my experience at the Crescent Cafe wasn't too bad, a nice afternoon actually.

The Crescent Café; The Savvoy Of DunstonWhat can I say about the crescent café bar that it was the best the meal of my life. Yes Dunston is home to one of the greatest establishments the world has ever seen yet is no where near the price of your other restaurants and cafés of the same caliber.I decided to have the full monty, quite literally, and ordered myself the all time classic; The Full English Breakfast! Now I’ve ate fry ups in some of the best cafes from London to Amsterdam, New York to Mumbai however this one really took the biscuit, and we’re talking Foxes.I sat down after ordering and started taking in the beautiful artwork which filled the walls with colour, emotion and all of the feels. From the kitchen came the beautiful smell of cooked flesh, tingling my nostrils as it flooded the café, if my nose was an ear, pigs would be whispering ‘Eat me, eat me’. The sizzling of the meat being cooked was music to my ears, like glorious slices of bacon dancing, tap dancing on the beautiful stage that was the frying pan. Then it seemed like time itself had stopped as there before me, in all its fatty, greasy glory, was laid the king of all full monty’s. The bacon and sausage tasted like they had been imported from the Garden of Eden itself, the egg was cooked just right as if they had been cooked in the frying pan of Krishna himself and the black pudding, oh god the black pudding; Tastier than if Buddha himself had granted black puddings with the ability to achieve enlightenment. The beans we’re the best smelling beans, no, the best smelling smell ever to grace my nose, better than Lush, Yankee Candle and the virgin mary’s fart all together -and trust me, that’s a nice smell-. The mushrooms were little diamonds in this sea of gold and last but not least, the toast; Lordy lordy, was it nice; it tasted like Odin himself had toasted the bread in his own personal toaster, and blessed it with the souls of legions of fallen warriors. So, to conclude, yeah it was a nice breakfast.

Do not go. My friend went to this pub on Tuesday and ordered the chicken fajitas and 24 hours later had the most horrible pain from sickness and diarrhoea. I visited with my friend on Wednesday and again both of us were ill all night with sickness and diarrhoea. We all ordered the chicken fajitas which I do not believe to be a coincidence. The food was nice however we waited an hour from ordering and have been violently ill since. I will not be returning to this restaurant and advise others to check their food before eating or avoid the place altogether.

The best named cafe in the area but sadly far from the best cafe. That they don't serve cooked eggs pretty much sums it up.
