My husband and I popped in for a quick late lunch as The Craven NEVER disappoints and again today, it didn’t! The staff and the food are just so friendly and amazing food. We both fancied the steak and ale pie and the waitress was so sweet and said that there may be a little wait as the chef was just making some more pies but WOW, we didn’t actually have to wait too long and it was worth every minute! The quality of the pie, the huge chunky chips and the perfectly cooked veg was the icing on the cake, or the gravy on the steak!! Their prices are reasonable and so worth every bite and the whole experience. I have been to this pub since I was a little girl playing in the garden with my parents watching, we’ve taken our children to do the same and now enjoy it with them as grown up children. The current owners are so personal to us whenever we visit and we look forward to so many more visits, with a big gang or just the two of us! Well worth a visit, you will love it! Varied menu, friendly, cosy and something for everyone!

Absolutely fantastic for a wedding reception. We had our wedding here in Sept 2024 for 80ish people and we had the best day. Not only is the venue brilliant for a relaxed wedding, with the large Tipi's and garden with play area for the kids, but the staff are fantastic. Kinga (owner) made planning and organising the wedding so easy and would do anything to help. On the day the staff were so friendly, helpful and attentive, we couldn't have asked for anything more. The food (BBQ) was brilliant value for money and everyone complimented how nice it was. If you are looking for a family friendly, relaxed environment to hold your wedding I can't recommend this place enough.

Popped in for Sunday lunch. In my opinion they were over stretched. The wait was nearly an hour and the Roast was average at best. I could have had twice as good a meal from my freezer. Too many menu options in my opinion for a Sunday which detracted from the quality I would expect from a Sunday roast.

We just decided to go out for an evening meal and googled pub food near by. Well guys what a great meal it was ……… Piping hot and delicious. Great selection of food and beautiful presented. Oh by the way guys also a great selection of craft beers and lagers. Outside in the garden there was an enormous teepee decorated very tasteful for those of you that would like to wine & dine. Glad we found the Craven Arms would definitely return.

Wow, what a find, great outside area with plenty of room for children to play and be safe without impacting on the non child drinkers and diners. The outside Tipi's looked amazing, what an amazing venue for a wedding or party. We had been to Highclere Castle and were looking for an evening meal, we were not disappointed. My husband had the Fillet Steak Stroganoff and I had an amazing Cajun Chicken burger (minus the bun as I don't eat bread) it was amazing, great coleslaw and onion rings. Great welcome when we got there and all the staff were friendly, helpful and accommodating, wish we lived nearer so we could come again.

We held a birthday party in the Tipis for 34 people. The staff were amazing before, during and after the party in helping us have a really memorable time. We had the BBQ option and everyone commented on how good the food was. Highly recommend the venue.

This is normally our "go to" place for a pub meal. However we feel that it is slowly going downhill. We visited last week and sat in the tipi's which is very nice. We initially ordered two garlic mushrooms for starters, only to be told they only had one left. My husband then ordered the tempura chilli prawns. The food came out and was really nice, certainly the garlic mushrooms were hot. We were then toying with steak or scampi, only to be told they had no steak left. We were told it had been removed from the standard menu and was on a specials menu. Why on earth would you do this? Steak is always on a standard menu and most people would go for this. We then opted for scampi. Food was nice presented and staff were very friendly. Unfortunately the scampi was not the warmest and we did mention this when paying. Also I believe the scampi was reformed and not wholetail so was therefore just mushy inside. My husband finished with a cheesecake and I had the salted caramel. To be honest, my cheesecake had no taste or any flavour to it whatsoever. We both felt that the meals were not as good as what we had enjoyed previously there. The portions have reduced drastically, the prices have gone up and the quality is not as good as it used to be. Previously we have always been happy to go back, but now feel that the meals are now nothing special, but average and would maybe think twice. If you like average good pub food then it is fine, unfortunately we are comparing it to how it used to be which was outstanding.

Warm welcome over the phone and at the restaurant. We haven't been to the restaurant since it changed hands and the team has done a fantastic job of creating a stylish outdoor space for all weathers. It is clearly a popular venue. Order was taken promptly and friendily and drinks quickly followed as did the food order and service.Children's meals went down well and my roast beef was tasty, little on chewy side. The roasts were quite hard on the outside so I scooped the insides out and Yorkshire little tinged on edges. My husband did not rate the home made burger and the scraps of chips it came with, tasty as they were. I don't think the portion of vegetables accompanying the roast were as generous as they were under the previous management and the meal prices seemed higher. That said, the drinks prices were very reasonable for a Newbury country pub.For us, the restaurant's greatest asset were the staff whose service we couldn't fault, best around. Our food experience was mixed. Would consider returning and trying different meals next time.

What attracted us also was the menu but in this era or socially distanced eating it appeared they had a perfect outdoor eating area. Well we had the most amazing food. All our meals were perfectly prepared & presented. The staff were unbelievably friendly & welcoming all while having to hide their smiles behind their masks & work under the increasingly changing & complicated Covid rules. As for the outdoor teepee ⛺️ it is absolutely gorgeous. I have attached a few photos to show just how fabulous it is. They have clearly invested heavily to make sure everything is Covid secure as well as making a welcoming environment. Too marks all round. We will be back (once we’re allowed )

My wife and I have not visited the Craven Arms for many years, I don't know why its just one of those things. Last night after a friend mentioned it to us and said that it was receiving rave reviews we thought we would look it up on Google, so glad we did. From start to finish everything was perfect. The website gives a very clear overview of what to expect regarding the Covid pandemic. I rang to make a reservation and the chap who answered was very helpful and took all the details he needed. When we arrived we were shocked to see the 'teepee' they talk about, we thought it would be a small closed tent of some sort that many other restaurants are erecting, and which in our minds are useless as they have closed sides and doors so you might as well sit inside the building and for someone who is still shielding then this is not an option worth taking, but NO, the teepee is a double sized teepee, huge with plenty of space, an open side that can be changed with other sides depending upon the weather, it has two fire-pits and a number of overhead electric heaters, together with ample space between tables. It also had QR codes on each table so you don't have to use one of the 'single use' paper menus, unless you want to, there are hand sanitisers around the place and the staff ask you if you would like the waiting staff to wear PPE or not. They have everything covered but it doesn't feel overpowering. On top of that the two members of staff we came into contact with, who we are guessing are husband and wife and the owners, were both brilliant. They both always had a smile on their faces and time for a quick chat, even though they were busy and could be seen actually running back into the pub to get the next service ready. They were both extremely helpful with anything we asked for, nothing was too much trouble. They had a good selection of drinks and a quite extensive menu, which is unusual during these times as many places have cut back on their offerings. We both only had a main meal but both were presented well and were exactly as we had ordered and really enjoyable (suggestion: my wife said an option to have a BBQ sauce on the baby back ribs might be a nice addition). Talking to the lady owner it would appear that they are going to keep the teepee in place throughout the winter as they are aware that some people are still not ready to eat inside, this is true for us, and very good to hear as will definitely be back and it wont be in a few years. All in all a wonderful experience and given we have eaten in the gardens of other local pubs this is by far leading the pack, they are miles ahead of the others. Congratulations and we will see you again soon, but I know we will have to book as it will only get busier as word gets around

A group of friends met here for lunch, we had pre-booked a table and were seated on a group of unmatched tables (some higher than others) right in front of the mens toilets. So each time a man went in to use the facilities we got a full view of the porcelain and a full whiff of bathroom smells. Not a great accompaniment for lunch. Our order was taken at the table and the server was pretty good though she wasn't able to answer every question. I got the impression she hadn't worked there long and only had limited training. The roast dinner was had by most of our party. The roast beef was bloody rare and tough as shoe leather. The roast potatoes needed a hacksaw to cut through. The turkey was insipid. On a positive the cauliflower cheese side was tasty and hot.I had the beef curry from the Specials menu. The beef was tender and the sauce tasty but it was very basic (add in some onion, perhaps a pepper?) and no condiments were offered. For over £10 I though it was a rip off!The coffee was good. The price tag for what we had was shameful. I will not be back.

We visit this pub quite regularly mid week and have always found the food to be of good quality and cooked well. Unfortunately today the Roast Beef was so sinewy that the knife struggled to cut through it. The chef should have known this when the meat was sliced. When the plate was brought to the table the meal looked good with three slices of the beef but sadly we could not eat most of it. We booked a table for our family get together for a lunch with 2 children in our group the Craven Arms is a great pub for family get togethers with a good play area / childrens menu and a caring team to make sure you are served well. The menu is varied with specials as well as pub favourites all at reasonable prices we had a great time and will be back in the warmer weather to make use of the garden.

I had lunch here on the Sunday before Christmas in a party of 18 family and friends of all ages. The pub was naturally busy but the service was relaxed and good .We ate from the Sunday lunch menu and the food was excellent. I never usually order Sunday roast in a restaurant, after some awful meals, but my roast chicken breast was excellent, as was my husband's roast beef. There were plenty of perfectly cooked vegetables and the portions were generous. This is the best roast lunch I had had in a pub, and very good value for money.

One of the best places for a meal we’ve been in a long time. Delicious food all round and really friendly staff. Sat next to a roaring log fire which made it even better. 6 of us went and all had something different, and each said our dish was great. The chips were really really good, nice flavour in the burgers, flavoursome casserole sauces. Lots of choice on the menu and well catered for children. Reasonably prices for how nice the food is. Definitely worth a visit. I will be back!

We met the new landlord (took over the pub 4-week’s ago) on arrival and had very attentive service and a great roast dinner, just what you want on an Autumn Sunday afternoon. The garden area is huge with space for children to run around.

Visited this pub after a hike in the beautiful countryside. Made an order which ended up being charged a bit more than we expected, however we decided not to question this. We asked for all the food to arrive at the same time, however this didn’t happen and they brought us a wrong sandwich with bacon even though we asked for a mozzarella wrap. We had to ask for the correct meal to be served to us instead and the price difference refunded & we hoped this little misunderstanding will be sorted so we can enjoy a relaxing lunch. We had to wait another 20 minutes. When the wrap & soup etc finally arrived the wrap contained no rocket and the mozzarella was dripping making the wrap soggy. Then the manager walked in and did a scene of putting the £1 coin(the difference of the wrong order that they made) on the table saying ‘here you go’. Not a word of apology or explanation that the staff just pressed a wrong button or misheard when we ordered. The manager then walked away and disappeared in the back rooms so I didn’t even have a time to react to this shocking service. I expect a manager to treat customers with respect and apologise for restaurant’s error. The girl who served us was very nice and apologised, which is why I am giving 2 stars instead of 1.

Our group of 14 started and ended our lovely walk around Hamstead Park and a stretch of the Kennet and Avon canal. We could not have found a better base because Andy and Kim went out of their way to ensure that everything went smoothly for us. We were allowed 'out of hours' access to the pub to pre-order our lunches and to use the loos. On our return from the walk we found that they had laid up a table especially for us and ensured that our food came very quickly after our.arrival. The choice and quality of the food can be witnessed by all the empty plates that were returned to the kitchen. This lovely pub and the area surrounding it were unfamiliar to all the walkers but I think, based on all the positive comments I received, we will be using it again as a base in the near future. Thank you Andy and Kim for your hospitality and attention to detail.

We arrived early to avoid the expected crush for such a lovely sunny day. This is a well organised pub with good food and good service. Plenty of outside space to enjoy as well and good car parking.

I visit this pub regularly for a weekday lunch and I have always found the food to be fresh and tasty. The smaller portion menu is ideal for a midweek lunch and there is plenty of choice. The lovely desserts are made in the kitchen and some are ample for two to share.

We hadn't visited this pub for at least forty years, so arrived to find it had been beautifully extended with a good size car park and childrens play area. The staff were warm and welcoming and there was good home made food to be had. We chose the slow cooked Lamb Shank with mash and vegetables and the Vegetable Tagine with Couscous which were delicious. There was a lovely friendly atmosphere all around and we would certainly go there again.

We had our wedding reception at the Old Boot on the 7th September and it's hard to put into words how amazing the team were in making it such a memorable day/evening. Mel and Michael were amazing in the run up to the event. Totally calm and collected in planning. Things I was worrying about where instantly addressed and my slightly frantic Bridal brain was put at easy at every turn. The Tepees and garden looked incredible! ALL The staff were charming from start to finish. The food was EPIC...some of the best I've ever tasted at a wedding, all the while feeling very relaxed and unstuffy. EVERY guest has commented since on the amazing venue so I would strongly advise anyone looking for somewhere in the area to go try it out. Brilliant!

Lovely sunny garden with plenty of seating and shade. Excellent varied menu from which I chose the smoked salmon and then a ribeye steak. My partner had pigeon and then monk fish all of which arrived piping hot and was very tasty - we cleared our plates! Definitely would recommend this pub both for a drink and for food. The garden is lovely, they are dog friendly and the interior has had a stylish makeover which makes sitting inside a pleasure
