This could be a really nice place to eat, but unfortunately once inside the place lacks atmosphere, and more importantly the food is just not good. The soup had a funny taste and the oignon rings and mushrooms were clearly frozen, and quite tasteless. Even the tea had a bad taste to it. I was surprised that the pub was empty when I went in with my mother... forty five minutes later upon leaving, I understood why. I even apologised to my mother for taking her there. Yet it could be a high class bistro/restaurant, if a good chef was hired to conjure up good dishes. And it is a real shame because the pub is well placed and has great potential. Yet we were happy to leave the place as inside there was a strange sense of oppression, despite the waitress being nice, in her own way. A long walk along the promenade, managed to dissipate our disappointment.

Abysmal! We were informed on arrival that phones could not be used in the building and we would have to go outside to take a call. We were ok with that but later I was sending a text and the officious barmaid came across and said that this was not allowed either and that the 71 year old owner forbid it blah blah blah! I was made to feel like some naughty school child, and it was completely unnecessary. Having spend £80, their attitude is ridiculous, we would have spent more but couldn’t wait to get out of the place. I had an important message to send and ended up hiding in the loo to send it! Food was good but owner needs to get real and accept that people need to communicate, they can do that as well as having social interaction. Barmaid was like a Rottweiler and needs a shorter leash…

On a rare sunny afternoon in September we enjoyed the beach. On our return to the public carpark I received an important message from a client and as a self employed person I needed to create and send an invoice asap on an app on my phone. My partner wanted a wee, public toilets were closed so we decided to have a drink at the Inn. (We actually wanted to have food as well but there was a notice on the door “kitchen closed” as was there last time we visited. I paid £10.60 for 2 pints of FRESH ORANGE AND LEMONADE!! We searched the building for a morsel of atmosphere before sitting by a window. There were 3 other customers and 1 member of staff. No music. I took my phone out of my pocket to work on my important invoice, a 5 minute job. My reception was poor so my partner offered their hotspot, at which the barmaid from behind the bar REPRIMANDED us “we’re a digital detox bar, you’re not allowed to use your phones in here …I know it’s a weird policy but it’s company wide…” This is by far one of the most bizarre and bemusing experiences of my adult life. My partner and I, 47 and 43 years old, given a row for using our own property, dictated to about how we spend our time together and in my case, my ability to earn a living taken from me. …but apparently I was “allowed to go outside and use my phone” Eh… then we’d be as well just going home as that would defeat the entire purpose of our visit! And indeed, it did. My partner suggested we drink our £5.30 bottled oj and draft lemonade as quickly as we could and never come back. Had I been informed of this absolutely absurd zero digital policy at time of being asked to electronically pass £10.60 for 2 soft drinks I might have left you a tip, alas here it is now, a tip, in digital form: TIP: Your policy is hypocritical and served only to induce conversation of dissatisfaction and chase us away. Your prices are outrageous. Your reviews here are your best insight. Not that you’ll ever see this because technology is satanic. Obviously. It’s almost as if you want to fail. Lived in Edinburgh all my life. Sadly, will not be back here.

Called in for lunch whilst on a day trip exploring in the area. Very pleasent old-school interior (kind of a typical Sam Smith's pub vibe) and a very friendly welcome. There was the usual selection of beers that you'd expect in a Sam Smith's, but I was driving so opted for an alcohol free ale. A good selection of food on the menu. I had the chicken burger and it was excellent - very tasty, along with onion rings, chips and side-salad.

Went in for dinner and a couple of drinks by myself. I was reading a book on a Kindle and just after my order arrived I was told Kindles are banned. The rule wasn't the fault of the staff member, but bearing in mind I was reading a book it felt needlessly rude and strict. I would have stayed longer and spent more money but now, despite living nearby, I will definitely not be back.

On our fabulous trip to Edinburgh, we enjoyed many delightful meals, including the wonderful Dishoom and David Bann, however, in it's own simple way, our lunch at the Cramond Inn was just as enjoyable. With a pint of the inestimable Sam Smiths' organic lager accompanying cheese and pickle sarnies, chips and onion rings, sometimes that's all that's needed from a pub lunch. We could've had something more adventurous, but were replete with our fabulous lunchtime experience. So nice to have a mobile phone free pub to spend time in. The Cramond Inn is full of history and charm. We loved it!

¡HIPÓCRITA NO! ! ! ! !VENDE ESTE PUB A ALGUIEN QUE SE PREOCUPE POR LA COMUNIDAD LOCAL>! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

Above all, they have inexpensive food and drinks. There are lots rules. No phone allowed. Not even texts. Black shirts would come down and reprimand you. Last time I had been to The Cramond Inn was a couple years ago and remembered it being a standard, cosy pub with good service and atmosphere. However, we went back last Saturday, and I think the only positive thing I can say about it was that is still cosy and traditional inside. There are now gaudy signs up everywhere telling you there is a ban on electronic devises (which I don't have too much of a problem with, but there is a polite and in-keeping way to share the information in a pub that old), and all the drinks and snacks seem to be made by the same company - Samuel Smith. My friend asked of a Guinness and instead of offering the alternative first they just started pouring the dark stout beer they had which he didn't enjoy at all. When asking about their whiskys selection we were told that there was an option of three - Scottish, Irish or American as far as I remember... unbelievable for an old traditional Scottish pub!The main bartender was also very rude and short with customers. I also felt sorry for another member of staff (who seemed to be new) with whom apparently the bartender training her didn't have much patience with - it made me quite uncomfortable the way she spoke to her. The pub was quiet and devoid of atmosphere, even though there were a few groups in, which is such a shame as it could be a really great little pub! The cash only rule also seems very strange to me in this day and age - no excuses for that! We had been planning on getting food there but didn't have enough money with us, especially after I was changed over £5 for a half pint of coke and a ginger beer and lime. Unfortunately, I don't think we will be back.

Went in with my elderly parents for a quick drink. £5.30 for two (half pints) glasses of soda and lime. After the drinks had been served, I was told they don't have soda water on tap so only had expensive bottles of soda by very indignant staff member, who looked like she'd had enough of the place herself. My 78 year old father was rather assertively informed from behind the bar that he wasn't allowed to use his phone when he was spotted reading a text message (not even phoning someone). It almost ruined what was an other wise pleasant day out with my parents. No dogs, No cards, No wifi, No phones: makes for a very negative atmosphere. It takes effort to make a place so unwelcoming and non-inclusive. I don't blame the staff, they seemed fed up too. Clearly a management/policy issue. This may be a business decision by the management to put tourists/passers by off so they can cater for only locals who want a certain kind of atmosphere. If so, that's fine and I wish them well. Business must be good if they can afford to have such exclusive policies. But just be aware you need to sign up to their 'philosophy' before you enter. Not for me sadly.

We moved to Cramond from overseas not so long ago and have started to pop into the Cramond Inn on the odd occasion with our friends along the road. On New Year's eve 2019/20, we had a right oul memorable session with our mates, a few other locals, and with Wullie & Pam the management team, so we decided to pay a return visit this past weekend for more craic n banter, again with some locals. We weren't disappointed.Delicious down-to-earth food with heartwarming pints. Ross - the dessert connoisseur in our merry band - despite a heroic effort, struggled to finish the huge slab of sticky toffee pudding. Quality was every bit as good as any fussy haute cuisine establishment, just refreshingly free of the anorexic portion constraints. The coal-burning open fires set the scene for a good old-fashioned pub lock-in. I can't remember what time we got home at.This pub is up against it in the changed times we live in. Sadly locals rarely frequent their 'local' in sufficient numbers to render such businesses viable (ourselves included). Cramond has a real traditional gem in this pub. But it's under-appreciated and underused. While the rules imposed by its absentee English landlord are eccentric to say the least (no mobiles, no card payments and no swearing), the Sasanach must be running this business at a loss, yet he continues to fund it. No doubt a pure commercial operator could turn this into a goldmine: lure the New Towners, Southsiders & tourists and sweat them for every spare penny with faux village charm at weekends while shutting the pub in the winter and mid-week off season.Cramond is a beautiful but largely sleepy neighbourhood - we the residents need to get off our rusty dusties and get down to the Cramond Inn more often to keep this honest establishment going. Its management team and staff are doing their best given the circumstances and externally imposed house rules. But guess what, we didn't actually miss our mobiles, and we'd taken out a wedge of cash in anticipation. And I've been trialling the exclamation 'feck' instead of its more profane cousin, and while Wullie and Pam haven't explicitly approved its utterance in the pub, they haven't thusfar thrown me out either...Sláinte mhaith

The owner of the pub locked it in with no notice or warning that the car park is locked at night. I chapped the door at 10am next morning and asked politely if they would let me out or at least give me a loan of a key to let myself out. Nah!!! The publican then made me stand outside and wait literally half an hour while he had a shower. When I explained that I found this unreasonable the publicans wife who had also shown up, launched a verbal assault on me and told the publican not to unlock the car park. We actually felt bad for ordering food. Was told to wait twenty minutes for a "slot" to even place our order as they didn't want to "overwhelm the kitchen." Food was basic but fine. The cash only policy is ridiculous given the distance to the nearest ATM. Observed the waiter telling a woman sitting by herself in the corner to put her phone away. I understand asking people not to use their phones in groups but she was just trying to distract herself while her friends went to get money out. Policy needs to change.

Waited at the food window for about 15 minutes, then went through to the main bar as no one came to the window (where we had been told to order). I got out my phone to read out the order (there were 8 of us so I had typed the order in my phone). Was promptly told that it's a no phone zone and to put it away. When I explained that the order was on my phone they still told me to put it away. All 8 of us left and went elsewhere. Disappointing experience. Could be such a good business if the staff were friendly and they didn't try to impose so many rules on people.

Despite the exterior having been repainted and looking very smart absolutely nothing had changed inside having been closed for some time. This was a weekend between Christmas and the New Year and yet we were the only 4 there (4 left as we arrived)! Not a decoration to be seen, no tree, nothing at all! No food available and cash only! This lovely inn used to be buzzing and so sad to see it empty and unwelcoming.

I was very surprised during our visit to this once iconic inn yesterday. Cash only, no dogs, no mobiles, can only serve one table at a time, no children except in separate room. Almost unbelievable experience in a local pub. Sadly, I can’t see how this place can be successful. Not able to order food as only one “slot” every 20 mins so unable to comment on the quality or choice of the food. Drank our coffees quickly and left.

We visited the Cramond Inn on Boxing Day along with our dog and received a warm welcome. We returned yesterday and were then told that dogs are no longer allowed anywhere with in the bar, with ne explanation why. Seems strange that this has changed within 17 days. We have been taking the do into the bar for a number of years.

Visited here today. Nice welcome pleasant staff. Surprisingly roomy as there are three rooms, the main bar-Nice and cozy, A small lounge-Nice place to chat, A family room-Warm and spacious. Downside is in this modern age, is not being able to use your phone, laptop or tablet. If you like nice cozy pubs I highly recommend.

New manageress welcomed us into Cramond Inn yesterday with a big smile. Well that's an improvement ! Samuel Smith make all the rules regarding use of phones ,cash only and lack of drinks choice so we shouldn't blame the staff but a friendly face behind the bar does help. Apparently food is being reintroduced again which is good news. Good luck to the new management team and we hope to enjoy visiting more often.

Visited here today, dirty and only sell extremely limited range of alcohol and no crisps. Took ages to get served only to be rudely told it is New Year’s Day sorry but you need to employ more staff if you are to open, simple or what. Also dogs are not allowed in area for families so if you have child and dog you need to sit in separate areas crazy or what.

Went in for light refreshment today, after a nippy walk. Under new management apparently. It wasn't busy and we decided to have a salad and a snack only. After ordering I discovered a card that stated cash only. I had a problem as I didn't have any so my partner had to dig deep! Embarrassing. After paying I sat down and began to peruse the place. Clean but quite worn. I noticed that not only did they need cash but they had banned mobile phones etc, families sat and ate separately and people with dogs went into yet another room.(dogs growling at each other) There were two loos, one for men and one for women/disabled and baby changing facilities. Difficult if a baby is accompanied by a chap. Good God, not even in the C20th let alone the 21st! Food OK but the chicken in my salad was reheated and crispy. To cap it all my drink was collected before I had finished. Could be a superb pub but not at the moment. People came in, scrabbled for money before asking where a cashpoint was (not one in village) before leaving. Missing a lot of footfall

The Cramond Inn could easily be one of the best pubs in Edinburgh - it's a traditional inn, with great character and open fires right in the heart of Cramond historic village, on the banks of the River Forth. As of December 2019 it's under new management, but sadly it's still tied to Sam Smith's brewery. This means that despite the growing market for craft beers, gins and other spirits, the Cramond Inn offers no choice at all. They stock one gin, one dark rum, one light rum, one Scotch, one malt.... You want wine? The list offers one red, one white and one rose - don't even think about asking for different grape varieties or vintages... Soft drinks are no better - no brands except for Sam Smith's own cola, lemonade, tonic water etc.

The Cromond Inn, known for its bad reputation on how they 2 guys for The Doo'Cot run it into the ground, since Pamela and Willie took it over the drinks tasted 100 times better (like the pipes had actually been cleaned), the kitchen is open and I’ve only heard good things about the food and the atmosphere is also 100 times better, just from the staff welcoming us in and thanking us when we leave, staff having a decent conversation with us and politely asking customers not to use their phones while in the pub, so now I recommend going to The Cramond Inn

This is a lovely old pub with a homely feel. It is a shame they don't take card but it clearly states that as you walk in. We were made to feel very welcome even with two noisy children! The barman kindly gave us colouring books to keep them entertained. It is not 'run down'at all! It is an old pub full of history and looks just as it should, in fact it was very clean! Coffee was good. Would definitely come back especially when food is on.

For a long time I have been meaning to visit this pub. Its cosy and historic and I would have though on a summer lunch time it would be full. We were the only two in the pub. It was clean. The drinks were extremely expensive, one pint and one orange and lemonade came to over £8. A couple with a young child came in seeking food but left as they could not obtain it. The barman was Ok but was looking a bit bored and spent time replacing light bulbs.

You can't fault the views outside or the location. That's the good. No food, terrible "own make" beers and wines, cash only, phones etc are banned and awful internal decor. I would suggest saving your money for elsewhere and just go for a local walk to enjoy the area and views, which are the only redeeming factor here.

Unwelcoming pub with some nice enough beers on tap. Signs in pub demanding that phones/tablets/laptops aren't used. Not sure if sign is supposed to be ironic as bartender was using his mobile behind the bar. Whilst we were in the bartender turned away a woman looking for accommodation pretty dismissively, as well as a woman who asked to use their bathroom. Also a guy asked to take a photo but was told that no photos were allowed. Shame that the place is so unfriendly as the pub could be a really nice place..

How to kill an iconic pub in a unique location. Samuel Smiths Brewery who own this pub should be ashamed. No food, poor selection of 'cold' ales. Uninterested staff. Only accepts cash! It used to be a real favourite when in that part of the world. Please sell it to someone who knows how to run an effective food and beverage destination pub. Something Crammond really lacks this type of location. Stop resting on whatever laurels you think you have.

Visited Cramond on what was the warmest day of the year so far and thought we would first have lunch in the Inn where we had previously visited and enjoyed. Not this time. Signs facing us as we entered , no food served , cash only . Really !! The pub was empty and I mean empty, this can’t be surely. We thought we would struggle for a table, we struggled to find anyone at a table. We had a quick drink and left. Such a shame this lovely pub has ended up like this, I dare say there must be a good reason. I realise pubs have struggled of late but thought that this one would have continued to be a vibrant establishment. How wrong was I.

My wife and I heard that the Cramond Inn was reopened and we visited it out of interest after a walk with the dog today. Stevie, the bar tender, welcomed us both with warm greeting and with a friendly smile. We found the pub to be an old fashioned pub where no music, TV or gambling machines were distracting you from relaxing and talking with each other. It's a proper stone building and mobile signal is really poor inside. I wasnt needing my mobile as a distraction but to check the tide times on Cramond Island, which I read about on a noticeboatd that was up at the entrance. It is a great idea and very useful information to have advising customers of the tide times. We both had a great chat with Stevie and other customers. Very relaxing place, which is also dog friendly for well behaved dogs on leads and an ideal venue for a get together with friends, especially after a walk. The brewery own drinks are rather good too and well behaved dogs get a bowl of water. We will be back and with friends next time.

Agree wholeheartedly with others on TripAdvisor - it’s really time for Sam Smiths to put the Cramond Inn up for sale and let someone else return it to its former glory. You just need to look a few miles along the coast to see what Buzzworks have achieved with Scott’s at Port Edgar. The residents of Cramond, Barnton etc and the thousands of tourists who visit Cramond Beach deserve a great local pub serving good food.
