Menu choice poor. Prices extortionate for ridiculously small portions. Maybe artistically presented but was not hot and in no way a satisfying meal. Left the restaurant still hungry and will not return.

A dreadful evening menu would have expected better, felt second class because we had a Virgin voucher so very glad we were not paying for the meal, £6.50 for starters, 5 to choose from, £15 for mains (only 5 to choose from) we both had to go for chicken as did not like anything else, was hoping for a steak, but there was none, £6 for dessert again only 5 to choose from for a big hotel would have expected better. Atmosphere, NONE, staff ok but did not feel very welcome, will certainly not recommend to anyone else, and will certainly not return.

Went for dinner on a Friday evening with a Groupon deal. 2 course dinner plus prosecco for 2 for £25. Opted for starter and main and spent extra on some nice Sicilian red wine and a dessert, which we shared, mplus coffee for 1.Starters were the haggis, neeps and tatties with whisky jus and the smoked salmon. Both delicious and the hot haggis starter served on a hot plate, a must for me. The haggis was served in 3 balls, coated in oatmeal and appeared to be deep fried, but not at all greasy, just tasty and hot!Mains were lamb cutlets (2 small pieces) with thyme mash (didn't taste of thyme) and ratatouille (average flavour), and sirloin steak with hand cut chips and sun dried tomatoes. Steak was asked for medium, but although pink, was more on the well done side and a little tough. The sun dried tomatoes were really just grilled tomatoes as far as I could tell. The hand cut chips, skins on, were tasty. Steak came with a pepper sauce at a £5 supplement. Paying extra for an overdone steak was not ideal, so be careful what you ask for if choosing the steak.Opted for an add on of a sticky toffee pudding, which we shared. Very nice and I asked for a scoop of ice cream as well as the butterscotch sauce, which I got at no extra charge. Would happily have had it all to myself, but as I'm not selfish, I shared.Latte coffee was very nice indeed. All in all, a nice meal, but would I pay full price for it, no don't think so. The bar, on the other hand, looked good and was full of French rugby supporters, so had a nice atmosphere.Friendly staff, attentive but not obtrusive. Decor a bit old fashioned and tired. Could do with livening up a bit.

Went here for high tea with some girlfriends before Christmas 2013... Never experienced such appalling customer service in my life....the actual offerings of sandwiches and cakes was poor...very little thought or inspiration in the selection. We had to ask for our tea and coffee as it wasn't brought out. Some of us asked for wine and got looked at as if we had asked for something heinous!!....still took the miserable waitress over 15 mins to bring the wine.....when asked 30 min later for more wine, the look of disgust on her face (when we eventually caught her attention by actually having to get out our seat to go fetch her!!) at being asked to actually serve us....well the 2nd round of drinks didn't even arrive so we walked out after 30 mins....the staff were miserable, we weren't the only table being ignored...even the manager would do everything he could to avoid eye contact or paying any attention to his diners or indeed staff.... Will never ever go back!!

We chose this restaurant as it accepts the Taste Card, which gives a 50% discount on food. We had trouble booking as several attempts to get through by telephone were unsuccessful. We first tried booking for lunch, only to discover that they don't serve lunch. We ate dinner here later. Service was not great. We had to wait a while to be seated, and a drink order of a diet coke was never delivered. Staff have to walk across a wide lounge in order to get drinks from the bar. We made do with a free jug of water. The food choice was limited, but the food was good. We had battered fish and chips with a delicious freshly made crunchy tartare sauce. The decor is dark and the restaurant is part of a larger lounge and bar so the atmosphere is anything but intimate. It needed three staff to calculate our bill (with the taste card discount) but they got it right, so no complaints there.

My Husband & I had an Itison voucher for a 3 course meal here. Very poor choices. 2 choice of starters, 3 choices of mains & 2 choices of sweet. Eggs Florentine or Potato & Cauliflower Soup were the choices of starters - I opted for the soup & was sorry I did. It wasn't nice at all. It was very, very peppery, so much so that my lips were tingling with the amount of pepper so I couldn't even eat it. The waitress came over when my Husband finished his Eggs Florentine & promptly lifted the 2 plates & vanished. I was waiting for her to ask me if anything was wrong with it but nothing was said. Next I had The Beef & Ale pie. The beef was ok but pasrty not nice so I had to leave it. Plates were red hot but food was actually cold. My potatoes were all black bits & looked like they hadn't been cleaned. Normally I don't bother with a pudding but I was starving so had one. It was the nicest part of the meal, I had cheesecake cos you can't go wrong with that & my Husband had ice cream (the 2 choices of dessert). From start to finish, not one person asked if we were enjoying or had enjoyed our meal. Courses were put in front of us & plates taken away without a word being spoken. I felt that because we used a voucher that they sort of looked down their nose a bit but a few other people had vouchers & I watched & it was the same with them, hardly anyone spoke. A couple, who I overheard saying that they were staying in the hotel seemed to have a couple of the staff chatting to them every 5 mins. Another couple of female staff, spent most of the time chatting to each other at the bar. When the waitress took away my plate with the pastry still on it, one of the girls at the bar pointed to the pastry & said something. She then came over & I said to my Husband, she will be coming over to see what is wrong with it. She promptly put down 2 menus for us to pick our dessert & walked away, again without a word. I have eaten in lots of hotels & have never experienced anything like this before. This is supposedly a 4* hotel. I am very, very disappointed. We were going to a show afterwards & it wasted the night a bit. I have never not left a tip for service but wasn't going to but my Husband left one. I have actually had a lot better service in a 2* hotel. I'm not a picky person, but civility & courtesy cost nothing. I am writting as this has annoyed me so much. I've read some of the other reviews & they seem to have been to a different hotel from me. I myself work with the public & I am considerate & respectful at all times. These values don't seem to apply here.

If I had read the reviews before booking the 'itison' offer (2, 3 course meals for £19) I probably wouldn't have gone but I thought as it's a 4 star hotel the restaurant must be good but we were a bit disappointed. If you think that you pay around £7ish for a large fast-food meal then the £9.50 we paid was good value but if I had gone in and paid the £50+ I would have been seriously upset. DH had the eggs Florentine (only one) and enjoyed it, I had the leek and potato soup but had to add a lot of salt and pepper to boost the taste. DH chose steak and ale pie as his main course and I took salmon and dill fish cakes (again only one!) The pie was full of large chunks of tender beef with a crumbly rather than flaky lid, I could see and taste the salmon but the dill was conspicuous by its absence. The lemon and black currant cheesecake was two separate small towers with a raspberry coulis, very light with a biscuit base. The girl that served us in the bar was lovely and very informative but the majority of the wait staff were quite sullen as if they were waiting for a complaint. The experience was fine but I expected it to be better.

What a disappointment!!!! We booked a table for four from London 4 days in advance, and never had confirmation of the booking as every time I called they were busy doing something else and kept saying they would call back. On arrival we have been welcomed by a lonely waiter who kindly asked us to wait to be seated as he had to look after all the tables (six) on his own. We managed to order and we enjoyed our starters with the supervisor telling off her staff continuosly in the background. My medium-rare steak arrived medium to well done and dry and when I pointed it out to the supervisor she asked me 'what do you want to do? send it back?'!!! when she should have just taken it away!!! I ended up eating it. The cod was cold and full of bones. The only praise goes to the deputy manager (a very professional and polite asian guy) who arrived on our request and made us leave with a smile even though the appalling experience. Well done to him, but i would not recommend this restaurant to anybody.

I purchased a Groupon voucher for afternoon tea and booked a table for Monday 19th August so that we could soak up the atmosphere of the festival. What a disappointment indeed as the finger sandwiches were just that and made from cheap white bread. The cream for the scones had jam in it and when I told the waiter his response was 'Oh, that was me, I used the same spoon as the jam'. The scones were not nice and the cakes could have been from Greggs!! Very disappointing indeed and would not recommend this afternoon tea at all. They need to sort this out.

Took my friend here for a voucher deal and we had a lovely meal. With good choices for our 3 courses. The place is easy to get to and so friendly and professional and meal was well served . I had no problem booking as it was quiet mid week ,we didn't feel they looked down on us just because we had a voucher . Think if you are friendly when they are there is no problems. Have also used vouchers for afternoon teas here on 4 different occasion and only had one problem. My sister doesn't like current scones and they had no plain ones so had to insist on them giving us something to replace it. After a discussion they brought a sandwich. So perhaps they could give a choice of plain or current scone. Just a small complaint. Other than that , the experience was excellent and staff friendly x

My Husband and I thought we would have a nice day out in Edinburgh to experience the festival and have our afternoon tea which we booked the previous day. The sandwiches which they describe as 'finger' were certainly that. White bread which must have been the cheapest you can buy and and filled with egg, cheese and tomato and smoked salmon. The scones were not the best served with clotted cream which had been spooned in with the same spoon as the raspberry jam. Even the waiter admitted that to us! The cakes on top tier of the plate could have been out of Greggs. Sorry you have no imagination for afternoon tea. Try some more savoury food and also try serving the teas/coffee with the food instead of at the start as ours was cold by the time the food arrived. You need to do some thinking about your so called afternoon teas!! The service was offhand and unapologetic as if we were in the wrong for complaining.

We visited the Carlton Edinburgh today to use a Red Letter Day Voucher for Afternoon Tea we received as a gift and has a very poor experience. On arrival we were placed among a posse of women in bath robes who were obviously having a spa day and we were a party of four - this did feel uncomfortable. The sparkling wine arrived - which had been advertised as champagne - it was warm and clearly sparkling wine! When the once cake stand arrived for four it was overloaded with unusual combination of 'treats' which have never constituted 'luxury afternoon tea'.Some of the sandwiches had the crusts cut off - they were cheese and tomato, salmon and egg - I never realised cheese, tomato and egg would be considered 'luxury'. The sandwiches had a mountain of crisps place on top of them - unusual combination for such an occasion. The first I took had clearly been frozen or had been in the chiller over night - on further inspection the cakes were also frozen, and the scones were clearly not fresh - had been heated in some way and were covered in icing sugar??!!I raised my concerns with the waitress who then proceeded to squeeze the sandwiches to check how cold they were and stuck her finger on the cakes too. I asked could we possibly have fresh sandwiches - she took them away and in around 5 minutes came back with clearly the same platter which she left with - and had only added the one sandwich I had previously removed. This was a major let down for us all. We asked for two classes of water - the glasses arrived - but we're not clean, once had lipstick marks and the other was just dirty. She went and brought another two glasses which were clean. We were asked by a member of the waiting staff if everything was ok - but as we had my parents with us - we had already made it clear we were not happy with the standard, which no one had down anything about - I was not prepared to make a scene in the environment in which we were sitting.I had decided to speak to the next person who appeared - but no one was in sight anywhere - on the floor we were on or at exit of the hotel and as we had left more than we had ate - were never given the opportunity to take away uneaten goods - though I doubt we would have. The standard of this is clearly classed as acceptable by Puma Hotels as were had a near identical experience last year at Stirling Highland Hotel. The overall cost of our gift had been around £80 given to us by my brother - some of the other guests had itison vouchers which was £20 for two - and we were all given the same experience, clearly some people are happy with this standard but since we had travelled a fair distance and negotiated the horrific roads of Edinburgh we were highly disappointed!I will be contacting Red Letter Day with the same experience but would like to think no one else would have to deal with the afternoon delights we had.

The start of the evening was pleasant enough. The waiting staff were professional, showed us to our table and provided the menu and the wine list. The menu had two starters. I chose the Egg Florentine, and my wife opted for the Soup after being told it was leek and potato. There were three mains. We both decided against the pie, my wife choosing the Linguine and I went for the Salmon & Dill FishcakeS after being told it came with vegetables and potatoes. For dessert there were two choices. Ice Cream or Cheesecake. We love Cheesecake so the choice was easy.I also asked for a large (250ml) glass of white wine as it appeared to be cheaper by the glass (£5.90) than for a bottle (£17.95). I thought this was very unusual and noticed this was the case with a number of the other wines available. So far so good. The Prosecco arrived. Not quite as chilled as it should be so we placed our glasses next to the iced water jug in attempt to lower the temperature a bit.Just then another member of the waiting team arrived at our table to inform us that they had run out of cheesecake (at 7:15 in the evening?) and would we like lemon tart or ice cream. Lemon tart taken as the alternative. My wine arrived and it too wasn't as chilled as I would expect. Our starters arrived. I really enjoyed the Egg Florentine. The orange coloured soup (leak and potato?) for my wife was unfortunately lacking in taste. On to the mains. My fishcake (one, not two as I had hoped for since the menu did say cakeS) was served with a splodge of coleslaw and half a dozen green leaves. The dressing was minimal. I ate it, but the fishcake lacked seasoning, and I did say to the waitress that the dish was not what I had been told it was. Indeed it was more like a starter than a main.My wife's linguine mainly tasted of garlic. Again the seasoning was poor and the dish suffered from a lack of flavour. Finally the lemon tart. Not sure if this was meant to be a hot or cold dessert. Sprinkled with white powder, and with a small decoration of raspberry coulis, the portion could have done with an accompaniment of clotted or ice cream to improve the appearance. It was quite tart to the taste and was finished off in three or four mouthfuls. On settling the bill for the wine, I found that inflation in the restaurant was rampant. The wine had increased to £6.20! A 5% increase in an hour. I paid this and left. Had we been paying the full price for this meal I would have been very, very disappointed. The restaurant almost appears to have been added to the hotel as an afterthought and the overall ambience was quite sad. Perhaps the poor lighting contributed to this? This would normally be the end of a review however I'd like to add that both my wife and I suffered some discomfort very shortly after finishing our meal. We had planned on going out later that night however I'm very pleased to say that we changed our minds about this due to our rumbling tums. Just as well we managed to get home in time or we could have been in a very embarrassing situation.

We were using a Groupon and were excited to be able to visit the well rated Carlton Hotel. Apparently they don't see restaurant coupons as a way to impress folks and get return business and potential new hotel bookings. Reservations required...seriously? We were the only ones in the restaurant and they didn't even have us on the list after getting an email confirmation from them. View? Hardly...they stuck us at a tiny table in a back corner when the entire restaurant was empty. The meat pie was good and pretty hardy. Good thing my husband was willing to share. My salmon cake was apparently the small appetizer portion for my entree. I would have gone home hungry if my husband hadn't shared. The prices to reflect the great discount don't match the menu. Once our food was set down, we never saw a server again. When we flag someone down before getting up to leave, she seemed put out to come over and said, "You've already paid" and walked off. I generally am great at tipping on the full amount of a Groupon, but since she thought we were done and couldn't even give us a water refill, that was how much tip we left. VERY bad experience with mediocre food, small portions, and poor service. If the point of coupons is for advertizing to get return customers, it isn't working for this hotel. Too bad I hadn't read these reviews before buying the Groupon.

The desserts came after about 20 mins wait we had ordered raspberry crème brulee with shortbread I couldn't believe it when it arrived without a raspberry in sight and no shortbread but a plain digestive! the apple tart with cinnamon icecream was a round of puff pastry with apples I thought the word tart would mean a nice shortcrust pastry the cinnamon icecream was a scoop of vanilla with a sprinkle of ground dried cinnamon on top I cant believe this is a 4 star hotel with this standard of food wont be dining here again and yes happy staff would help

We visited on Sunday on an itison voucher under the title ***Gourmet Dining***!!!! and how wrong could they be. The deal was 3 courses from their set menu £25.00 per head and to be honest it is over priced by £12.50 based on the selection and standard of cooking. We had soup & eggs Florintine to start and beef pie as our main meal and to say the pie was dry would be an understatement. I complained to the waiter who came back to say that the chef apologised for the standard and that was that..... I had the pleasure of dining at the Roxeburgh on Saturday night who have a £25.00 menu and the standard of food from presentation to taste was just worlds apart. If you have no sense of taste then the Carlton is for you, but if I could give you one bit of advice avoid this place like the plague.

After a lot of hassle trying to get a reservation (no reply to emails, phone ringing out) my friend and I eventually managed to make a telephone booking. When we arrived we were asked for confirmation of our reservation. Unfortunately we did not have this as it had been booked over the telephone. The host did not seem to believe we had an actual reservation and only seemed to soften when the couple behind us informed him they were the same. After being asked to wait we were eventually seated at a table. Fortunately the waiting staff were much friendlier, however I was not overly impressed with the food. The battered fish I had ordered was covered in soggy batter and was not very appetising. My favourite part of the experience was the slice of freshly baked bread that was served before the starter.Needless to say, I won't be eating here again.

Went for dinner with my partner on a very snowy Monday evening. Waiting staff could do with a lesson on how to smile. We made our selections and sat back with a lovely chilled glass of Prosecco. When our starters arrived I was please to find my soup bowl had been heated - however the soup inside was less than lukewarm. The waiter did take it away and it was returned a few minutes later, thankfully much warmer. As I was having fish for my main course I ordered a glass of dry white wine. When it arrived it was warmer that my soup had been! The waiter blamed this on a faulty fridge however the Prosseco that we'd had earlier was perfectly chilled. He did go to the bar and get me another glass of wine - this one was slighty cooler than the first but still not chilled as it should have been. The apologies on both occassions could have been more sincere and until all the restaurant staff have received a little more training in customer service I won't be returning.

Plenty of other ladies also out to enjoy a leisurely afternoon tea and gossip in what generally serves as the Carlton Puma Hotel's only restaurant. Having stayed in Carlton for two nights It was in General quiet good, the location was really good just off royal mile and 5 min walk to princess street. Didn eat in hotel at all as was far too expensive and overpriced, was very clean throughout but just lacked much atmosphere. The bar staff were inexperienced and never engaged in any form of communication. Our room while very nice was very nice , just very noisy at night until about three o clock. This hotel is capable of so much more and doesn't make the most of its location.

Booked at reception in the morning - the restaurant had no record of us!! Not a good start :-(. The manager made us a table after bitter complaints and then we were rushed through the most amazing food I have eaten in a long while, 3 courses in 30 minutes!!!! Such a shame that we were made to feel on edge and in the way as the food was excellent. The booking fiasco and warp speed insensitive service ruined what potentially could have been a memorable 10th wedding anniversary meal... Gutted :-(

This could be a really nice place to eat, but unfortunately once inside the place lacks atmosphere, and more importantly the food is just not good. The soup had a funny taste and the oignon rings and mushrooms were clearly frozen, and quite tasteless. Even the tea had a bad taste to it. I was surprised that the pub was empty when I went in with my mother... forty five minutes later upon leaving, I understood why. I even apologised to my mother for taking her there. Yet it could be a high class bistro/restaurant, if a good chef was hired to conjure up good dishes. And it is a real shame because the pub is well placed and has great potential. Yet we were happy to leave the place as inside there was a strange sense of oppression, despite the waitress being nice, in her own way. A long walk along the promenade, managed to dissipate our disappointment.
