Pulled over here to check directions and got yelled at by the person living upstairs about the car park being closed and they slammed the door before I could even answer. We did plan on coming for a drink on our way back through but didn't bother.

Wasn’t sure what to expect. After a brief visit for a nosey we returned for the water tasting experience. I was genuinely bowled over by it. I’ve never cared much for bottled water but after this I actually notice the difference between brands. I have cut out other soft drinks and tap water completely. Entertaining and thought provoking. Well worth an hour of anyone’s time.

On first sight we should have turned back around in the car park. A derelict house advertising small opening hours and no food. Bar man unapologetically, offered us a few bottles of beer to choose. No draught on tap. The place was in complete darkness other than a couple of windows letting in a small amount of sunshine in that split second. I understand electric has become expensive but if you had an accident here I don't think the owners would survive the compensation claim let alone see you to call for an ambulance. Did manage just about to see a bottle of Magners in a wine cooler to be fair. Lighting was thanks to some tacky blue fairy lights around some bottles of spirits. Used the toilets which had NO lights. I had to search the two toilets for loo roll in the dark. Hot tap not working and the ridiculous amount of hand soap remaining had been excessively watered down. Back to the huge paper roll to dry my hands. 2 Budweiser bottles nearly £8. HSE would have a field day in here. I have no idea how this place has 4.5 reviews. Obviously running it down into the ground. Don't waste your money. Would have scored nil if I could.

Such a waste of a beautifully located public house… run down, dirty, and looking like a back yard business is outside. Hardly open and no food but to be honest it’s not at all inviting, However if you’re into mineral water this could suit. The spring water in the area is apparently special and so I guess that’s where the focus is. But although the company van looks pretty and clean it’s the only thing that is. The owners are missing out on so much here … why not clean up, offer delicious local ale and food and keep customers coming back rather than walking past thinking ‘aw now where do we go’ … it’s several miles to the next pub and if you’re walking (as I was) this would be on the list of hostelries. The area of Wildboarclough is stunningly beautiful with plenty of history to attract visitors. Come on all at The Crag .. serve your ale and a small varied menu and we’ll support you.

Went with some friends to see what on earth was going on with a water bar. Many jokes had about doing shots but... We went back and did the full tasting. It was actually really interesting, and now I know why I like some bottled after and not others, and how certain waters can make even mediocre cheese taste better. It sounds completely mad but we did have fun, and i will be paying more attention to the water aisle in the supermarket.

The Fratellis only served water too.... This still stands. However, creepy and generally run down the place is, when we first went in it was not very welcoming and a few laughs were had about being the fratellis hideout and a good place to hide a body etc. But in the spirit of adventure we did a few shots of water and had a few laughs. But the water shots peeked our interest. Some of us decided to go back another day for a water tasting session. It was very informative and much much more welcoming. I'd definitely suggest going for a tasting session. It might not change your life but it will certainly change your mind about bottled water. Very informative and interesting talk about mineral content and the natural flavours of water Could do with cleaning the ladies loos and making sure there's loo roll in though.

So, so pleased we decided to do a water tasting experience with Doran. I was curious going in and fascinated by the end. We are very familiar with the crag, we use to actually avoid this place as it was unclean and unfriendly. The owner served my husband and my husband asked for an ale recommendation & the owner said "I don't drink that disgusting stuff" and went on to tell us he was T-total. Each to their own, we did not judge him for being T-total as everyone has a past, however, he was so rude about it and was judging us for wanting a drink. We did not feel comfortable to sit inside, so we sat outside despite it being cold. As we sat and had our drinks, we watched kids playing on the car park. My husband was worried for the kids safety, but then the owner came outside and shouted to the kids "get ready, we are leaving in 10 minutes". At least that solved the safety concern for the kids for that moment! We had finished our drinks and I wanted the toilet before setting off, so I get up to find that the doors were locked! The lights were off and no one inside! It was an hour before the stated closing time on the opening hours. The worst thing was that he came out, walked past us to tell his kids, walked past us again to go back inside and never said a word! At that moment we knew we would never come back.

The carvery has plenty of choice of meat and vegetables and was delicious I also tried the local storm ale which sank everything down nicely. All members of staff were very friendly and were so hospitable. The atmosphere was wonderful too with 2 fires lit and music on, I was first expecting to sit in their function room but was informed this was now a bottling room for their spring water business so I would highly recommend people who are wanting to try this carvery to book in advance. I have eaten at multiple carverys in the area and must say this is the best I’ve had in terms of food and atmosphere.

Today will be my last time at the Crag Inn. The previous owners ran a great pub - excellent food and beer. It has gone drastically downhill since then. We travel from North Wales on our motorbike, so it makes the day if we have a decent meal. The board on the main road advertises Sunday Carvery. When we arrived it was obvious that this was not on offer - the dining room was blocked off. A board on the bar offered Sunday Special - Roast Beef Sandwich, but no they had run out. In desperation, we ordered 'HOME-MADE ' Steak Pie. Well if that was home-made, I would eat my hat and that would have tasted far better!!! We had bitter shandies, which were flat and lukewarm. We left the majority of the food and drink, and walked out in disgust. The bar staff and kitchen staff were all youngsters, no disrespect to them, but there was no-one in charge. I would have recommended The Crag a few years ago. Unfortunately, my advice now would be stay well clear.

Gone are the lovely Chesterfield sofas and comfy chairs. They have been replaced with uninviting looking wooden tables crowded together and there was an empty glass serving cabinet by the bar, not a good look. Also, they've obviously had some plumbing work done upstairs and the white plastic piping is hanging down below the lovely wooden ceiling beams, again not a good look.

I can't remember the last time we walked in to a pub and received such a warm welcome. Yes, it's a bit tired and yes it's a bit scruffy around the edges but this all adds to the charm which is sadly lacking in so many establishments these days. It was clearly going to be quiet because of the snow but this didn't stop the proprietors from putting on a great carvery. The beef, ham and lamb joints were cooked to perfection and we were allowed to try some of each complimented by the traditional trimmings and superb gravy. Such a great place for walkers, families or groups and a shame we were driving as could have spent all day drinking and chatting in there. Will definitely go back with friends and many thanks to the owners for their hospitality and for being so charming.

Stopped by after a very long walk for something to eat and a drink. After going inside and seeing the place I refused to eat there and just had a drink instead. Inside its filthy, dark, dingy and smells of dogs.. There was an Ironing board and vacuum cleaner propped against the wall in the bar area (3pm on a Saturday - nobody cleaning). Toilets are in desperate need of an update and a good clean.

Midday Wednesday Stumbled over this place whilst rambling round area. Had not intended to dine here as never knew it existed, but as black clouds threatened walked in. Friendly welcome for me and my dog. worn but very snug and comfy pub ideal for ramblers and people just out for a drive. Fire going in one of the two fire places was great in view of the English summer weather. Reasonable choice menu not huge but what was better the tues to Friday (senior citizens) choice of beef or lamb stew That I opted for, good decision , large chunks of tender lamb in gravy with peas carrots and mash £4.95Left just enough room for the pie made with locally picked bilberries with custardFollowed by coffee.Couple of comfy chairs in other side of pub if you wanted to just sit and have a coffeeGroup of ramblers came in quite wet from the down poor, made welcome by landladyWho sorted their orders out quickly to get their food started.Great find will make sure I pass here again

Met up here with two friends for lunch. Would have been great if sun had been shining but it was not to be. We all ordered the 'oap beef stew" - a bargain at £4.95. It was very good - served with mash & peas. Two of the group had syrup pudding with custard for dessert - also delicious. The owners are very good hosts - friendly and cheerful. I have no hesitation in recommending this pub.

In the middle of a walk we three oldies had beef stew for a week day lunch at their special offer price of £4.95. A very pleasant surprise and why the whole of Macclesfireld oldies are not there is a mystery. Lamb stew is available on other days.Lovely pub in a great location. Worth planning a walk aound it or using it as a base camp for the ascent to the summit of Shuttingsloe. After all some have to remain behind to look after...themselves.

Lovely little friendly pub, in the heart of the Peak District. We booked a table mid afternoon, after spending the morning walking, its close to many recommended walks, including the walk we did the Three Shires.Small but decent menus of sandwiches and hot meals as well as a good list of desserts, there was even vegan (falafel, hummus, salad, dips and chips) and veggie options in the hot meals and they do a roast on a Sunday. It is dog friendly, has inside and outside seating, a log fire, free wifi and a bike repair station too.Casual, friendly, perfect to rest up and replenish after a good walk.

The Crag is one of those rare things - a proper country inn with no trendy trappings. The food is excellent (the Sunday roasts are the best I have ever had in a pub) and locally sourced, as are the available beers, the location superb (just at the base of Shuttlingslow) and the service second to none. The perfect place for walkers and affectionados of real pubs. Great food, great beers and the friendliest hosts around. The Crag Inn has become a firm favourite worthy of repeat visits. The addition of Molly, an adorable lamb which was adopted by the owners, is an added bonus.

I took a party of 60 for lunch whilst walking around Shutlingsloe. The pub copied wonderfully and with good humour, and provided a fantastic hotpot, which went down very well with all. Well worth a visit.

We went to the Crag today following a walk over Shutlingsloe. It has changed hands just over a year ago apparently, and whilst we happy with the meals we'd had there before, today was certainly a step up. We were welcomed by a lovely personable girl behind the bar, who dealt really well with my wife's wheat allergy issue. We ordered scampi and the falafel and it was brilliant. Food quality was excellent, it was served quickly, and was well priced.Really impressed, and we will certainly be returning.

My father (84) and myself revisited The Crag Inn after 15 years or so as we had often reminisced about our first visit in 2004. Great pub with friendly owners who are prepared to chat to you. Good luck - hope the business prospers!

We came back to the Crag yesterday (Sunday) for the first time since it has changed hands and were delighted with the new owners and the genuine warmth of the hospitality they provide. The pub has been cleaned up and slightly rearranged to make it cosier and a better layout in which to relax or eat. Having said that, it still retains the feel of a proper traditional English pub. The meats on the carvery were tastier and juicier than ever and accompanying food and drinks were faultless. The place feels happy, smiley & alive again and with the addition of quality live jazz on the first Sunday of the month, we felt that it now provides a wonderful place to either stop during a walk in the beautiful surrounding area, or to drive to, simply to enjoy good food and company. I really hope everyone who abandoned the Crag over the years gives this place another go as it deserves to do well from now and I think will appeal to a wide range of people. We'll certainly be back!

At last a pub that serves good honest food and doesn't call itself a gastropub!Although I'm a terrible food snob and shy away from carveries, the roast beef was pink, the Yorkshires and roast potatoes crisp and the cauliflower cheese was fab!The welcome was also memorable - We loved Molly the lamb.....

Been waiting to go here for a while, and was a bit disappointed to find out that it's yet another pub owned by a conglomerate. My husband's duck arancini had mint, coriander, cucumber, apple, and sweet chilli, and he felt the mint didn't go with the duck at all, and the sweet chilli overwhelmed the other flavours. My crispy beef salad was nice but the peanuts should be chopped more finely. The beef brisket was very dry, but I paid for the Goosefat & bacon potato to substitute the mash, and this was mouth-watering! Apple and cinnamon crumble was delicious and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful.

It was the last day of trading before a refurb, so there was no food on but the drinks were very nice and the staff very friendly. Can't wait for the reopening, we were told early December so we will be popping bye.
