The Courtyard in East Staffordshire

Sad to say this review isn't great. My last review was. The serving staff were great quick and efficient. However, the Festive Fayre Menu was not great. The Menu was not on the website, we kept looking and when I enquired was told it would be but never was. It seemed a bit of a hurried menu? We had the Turkey Escalopes and they were so salty we couldn't eat too much of them. I like to add my own salt if necessary. We then had the Baileys Brulee which was nice but couldn't taste any Baileys whatsoever. We were then charged wrong. They put that right but were overcharged again - we will put it down to a Xmas tip for the staff - which is fine this time - but check your bills people. Bit disappointed if I'm honest as normally it's one of my fave places.

We were a party of 20 for my baby shower. Earlier in the week, I had discussed on the phone if we could have the marquee outside, how they would already set the tables up for us and if we could come for 11am to set up. Upon arrival, we had to wait as the tables still had customers but once they left, the staff swiftly put the tables together for us. I didn’t get her name but the lady with short red/blonde hair was absolutely brilliant. She made sure our drinks order was taken and asked when we would like food to be served. Staff were prompt on serving drinks and the food was beautiful, lots to fill our boots! I was shocked and disappointed that vegetarian options for afternoon tea were served on plates next to ham and tuna sandwiches. We asked for fresh that hadn’t touched meat but the blonde waitress was clearly annoyed by this request. However, the great waitress from before apologised for this and said this should not have happened. Overall, a good experience and I am glad I chose here for my baby shower. Just a few tweaks and it would have been perfect!

Fantastic food and service great atmosphere very casual and relaxed good value would recommend a visit second time there this one for lunch previous one for afternoon tea which was immense

Lovely lunch of light bites menu - good value, nice and hot, beautifully presented. Sat outside in the Courtyard which is absolutely lovely, good service, waitresses seemed very happy and welcoming.

What a disappointment! Visited yesterday (8 of us in total) for a Prosecco brunch for a friends 50th. Booked back in Feb and also paid a deposit for us all as advised we would need to. Arrived just after 11am to be given wrong menus first. When I pointed out we’d booked the Prosecco brunch they seemed slightly put out as it wasn’t on the booking. Anyway as there were a few of us and we hadn’t seen each other for a while we spent a good 15 mins catching up and chatting - as women do. Not at any point did anyone during this time offer any drinks, pour our fizz ready or ask if we were her ready to order. We were greeted by a really rude waitress upon arrival and then same waitress proceeded to tell us at 11:20am that we needed to be off the table by 12pm as they’d got a private booking. When mentioned that at no point had anyone stated this upon booking, paying the deposit or arriving they couldn’t care less. Fed back our disappointment but again didn’t really care. At 11:26am another waitress came over and said that the kitchen was closing at 11:30am so we had four mins to place our order, with a further 30 mins to eat up. Still at this point - despite the menu stating we had two glasses of Prosecco with our brunch we hadn’t received a single offer of a drink. Anyway quickly placed our order and eventually got some drinks. We did speak to a few team members about the lack of service and poor customer service but all one kept saying was “I don’t even know who took the booking?!” Food subsequently arrived prompt (to get us out in time no doubt) and it was ok. Not bad, but ok. Food was lukewarm, coffee was lukewarm but having previously fed back we didn’t feel it was worth raising these issues as clearly no one cared anyway. We then got asked if we wanted the pastries that were on our menu or just more Prosecco. No doubt in an effort to clear the table; however we did opt for the pastries as this is what we had chosen. At no point was a check back conducted during the brunch and we were generally just made to feel really unwelcome. We did receive our coffees free of charge but there was not one apology, or any customer service given and to be honest left such an awful atmosphere that it completely ruined our friends 50th celebrations. Really disappointed because actually this place has such huge potential in a lovely’s setting. 8 ladies that most definitely won’t be back. Such a shame as we had this planned for ages and were really looking forward to it.

Upon arrival we were greeted by a particularly unfriendly waitress, no warmth or smile; she genuinely looked annoyed that we were even there when we walked in! Despite booking over two month’s ago for a friend’s special Birthday (and paying a deposit) we were told that we only had an hour to an hour and a half MAX to order and eat as another party were arriving! When we told the waitress this was a little unfair she said ‘well I have no idea who made your booking but that’s the situation!’ She couldn’t have cared less, then a ‘manager’ came over; didn’t try and appease us or apologise; in fact she was even more rude than the first woman. Honestly it was so shocking! All of the hot drinks were Luke warm but we didn’t dare mention it because they were so mean! The prosecco was nice, the food was nice enough (nothing special) and the venue was in a very pleasant position in the lovely courtyard but we were appalled by the customer service. Two of the rudest women we have all ever encountered within hospitality. (Some of us work in the field!). Shocking and really unfair! None of us would ever return!

We found ourselves with a moment to spare when our children were otherwise engaged elsewhere so we called in for a late-lunch early-dinner for a Mom & Dad date. We were in and out in 50 minutes but had a nice time. Very fast and friendly service, and quirky surroundings. Had the weather been warmer then outside looked lovely. The cod goujon sandwich tasted good but could have been presented better, perhaps laying some rocket in the bread before adding the goujons. The pizza was very good. I had an Alfredo which was lovely, hot, crisp and tasty. The chicken strips were pure white, and there was plenty of fresh basil all over it. Recommended.

Amazing surprise 70th for my mum, start to finish was just amazing, great food, amazing staff and everyone had the best time. It’s such a lovely venue for a party. We had 55 people there and it was perfect. Everyone commented on the food and how lovely it was.

We needed a hot drink and an opportunity to catch up, this venue delivered, smartly too. Welcomed warmly at the door, we were seated straight away. Ordering drinks, the tea arrived quickly. Menus for food were available: we may look at these for next time. It struck as a good venue for a girlie lunch in warmer weather. Much seating in the attractive courtyard.

We've celebrated, as a family, for a few years now for my husband's birthday and have always enjoyed lovely food in an extremely relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. We booked for midday and the very first thing we were told on arrival was that the table was booked on for 2 pm. This didn't, realistically, allow adequate time to serve 12 people including children for 2, let alone 3 courses and I had not been told that when I booked the table, otherwise I would have decided it was not realistically possible. Drinks orders were taken a good 20 minutes after we sat down, and knowing they wanted to hurry us through service I do wonder why they didn't take the food orders first, so they could at least be getting on with cooking straightaway. However, the food orders were take quite a while afterwards and when it reached 1.30pm we had finished and were waiting for the table to be cleared. We weren't sure if we then had time for puddings, so one of us went and asked and was told we were able to. Once again ten minutes went by and the main meal plates had not even been cleared, so I then asked if they wanted us to vacate by 2 pm we would at least need to view the puddings menu. I was told quite abruptly that one of our party had already raised the query, to which I explained that I knew that, but if the next customers for our table were to arrive would we be hurried out? I was told that it we wouldn't - which was a bit puzzling as from the outset the time frame for our meal had been spelled out very clearly. We weren't even asked if we wanted coffee - however I don't think they really wanted us after that, despite paying a heavy bill. Such a shame and really disappointing. We will be booking elsewhere next year.

Treated very poorly by staff. Starters arrived 8.30pm and then told at 8.45pm that kitchen closed at 9pm. No time to have main course. No offer of being able to come another time, staff really didn't care.

A lovely afternoon spent with friend in pleasant, clean surroundings. Friendly and smart uniformed staff. A good variety of drinks on the menu and the food was well presented and tasty. Definitely worth a visit if you fancy something other than your usual local pub.

We met up with family at The Courtyard on a Saturday morning. Plenty of outdoor seating and we were allocated a booth. Friendly welcome, lovely selection of cakes, all homemade. We enjoyed Chocolate Fudge Cake, Coffee and Walnut Cake, all large pieces. Coffees were excellent....

Perfect location for an early summer evening. We went in for a cup of tea and found this quirky courtyard with friendly staff served fantastic food.We sat in quiet relax surroundings and had a pit of tea. It was so pleasant we sat and read for an hour before ordering a portion of nachos with beef chilli to share as a starter and a Mediterranean pizza (halloumi, olives and mozzarella etc.)The atmosphere was quiet to start (great to read in the sun) and gradually filled with dinners inside and out.I will definitely return even as a solo business traveller (I was accompanied by my wife on this occasion).Thanks to the staff for a lovely late afternoon early evening.

It was first week after winter lockdown and there was a table free so we had an impromptu sunny Saturday afternoon lunch. The service was ad-hoc and we could see a lot of customers were getting a little irritated when they had booked and tables weren’t reserved.Our food did take time but when it arrived it was worth waiting for and delicious.we’d recommend you book to ensure you get a table, We’re putting the issues down to first weekend open, hopefully service and food waiting time will get better for our next visit.

30 minutes and no menus Garlic bread was wet. Seafood was good. Gins were very well priced. Won’t be going back. Shame.

Shocking customer service Meet a friend Sunday midday at this restaurant. We set outside and the waiter gave us the menu. We decided to move inside as it got cold outside. Nobody bothered to acknowledge us so we decided to help ourselves to a free table. Waited at least 15 mins before someone decided to take our order. We were then told that we had the wrong menu and couldn’t order the food we wanted. I tried to explain that we were given the menu outside but we moved inside as it got cold sitting outside. The waiter has such a bad attitude we told her to cancel the drinks order we were not staying. Shame it looks a nice restaurant but the staff and manager are completely incompetent and badly need training. There was approx 3 tables of customers so it wasn’t as if the place was busy with customers. Please don’t try to justify this poor level of customer service in your response - I won’t be returning again.

We had lunch on Saturday. the square table around a' tree' is nice but too big making conversation difficult. Two servers worked hard but service was slow. The woman with blonde hair at the front of house was out to lunch and impossible to get her attention, I am not sure what her job was. The menu is good and we enjoyed our food.

My wife had lemon cake & tea & presentation was good. I had beer which was nice & cold. The service was good, ambience was good & they had a nice outside area to sit as well as an inside area & bar.

First night reopening after lockdown, - didn’t know it existed pre- lockdown. Fantastic food and service. Fillet steak par excellence. Really impressed and will be back.

If you ever come to Tutbury - and unless you already live there, chances of that happening are very slim indeed - and you're craving a solid lunch menu, you can certainly do worse than The Courtyard, a smallish but nice and comfy restaurant on the main street of that tiny little hovel. I dropped by en route back from Sudbury Hall & The Museum of Childhood (a bus stop to the 401 line is very close by) for a late lunch. Maybe my choice, the traditional F&C, wasn't the best one. There are both British and international items on the menu, plus a healthy pizza selection. The F&C were decent enough, but very much "solid pub quality". Unfortunately, I had just had the best F&C of my life at The Devonshire in Belper two days earlier - and by comparison, the one at The Courtyard paled both in concept and execution. Some of the dishes I saw on other people's tables (It was quite busy on a Saturday afternoon) certainly *looked* better. Also, if you want a good beer with your food, maybe a regular pub - there are several along the street - might be the better choice (or, split food & drinks). The Courtyard offers a selection of fizzy lagers, one British on-tap pale ale (not a very good one, 61 Deep by Marston's). I see many reviews by local people who seem to enjoy the food a lot, but compared to stuff available in Derby, it just seems very average to me. Nice place per se though, staff were generally friendly.

Called in the courtyard for drinks was a lovely atmosphere huge selection of gins and cocktails we did manage to get a table for food everything was beautifully presented my husbands steak was tender homemade chips superb i had tapas selection loved it .Service was great a very enjoyable evening

Small, busy, friendly and with the best food ever! Visited whilst weekending with Son and Daughter-in-Law. Table appeared to be double booked but was sorted within a few minutes. Good advice on the selection of gins and patiently waited whilst I sampled others' before buying, despite being so busy. Fish and Chips, Fillet Steak and Rack of Lamb all excellent. The go-to restaurant when in Tutbury.Closing the door on the way out does seem to be totally beyond some people; a spring 'elbow' at the top of the door, perhaps???

Really lovely meal had with family. Great food and good atmosphere for so early on on a Friday night. Brilliant gluten free options with no fear of cross contamination. Thank you to all the staff.

My daughter and her husband happily stumbled on this lovely restaurant and have been back several times with different groups. Everyone has been mightily impressed with the food, staff and overall experience. It was my turn last night and it did not disappoint. The food was beautiful and the staff were indeed friendly and efficient. My only gripes were a wonky table and why oh why can people not shut the door properly when they leave! I would thoroughly recommend and look forward to coming back.

I’ve visited here with the girls on a Friday evening for pizza and gin/wine and the service and food was just brilliant! I was recommended a wine that I think is now my new favourite! I loved it that much that I then took my hubby for Sunday lunch today and it honestly was the best Sunday lunch I’ve had in a restaurant, all homemade food and all really tasty and great portions! The decor and atmosphere of the restaurant is perfect - will definitely be returning.

We went up for a meal with family, always extremely friendly staff and so chatty with our teenage kids. Food was amazing and staff provided great service. They had a live duo, who did a great mix of music. A highlight of our Christmas!

We have enjoyed coffee and lunch here many times on our visits to Tutbury but this was one of the best Sunday lunches we have shared as a family of 6 adults and 6 children with delicious roast beef and turkey and an amazing selection of vegetables. With hindsight we may have passed on the sharing platters to start, although they were great as the portions were very generous! Lovely desserts too with one of the grandsons thoroughly enjoying his favourite sticky toffee pudding and custard. Loved how the owner interacted with the children and moved and hid their Christmas elf for them to find. Will definitely be back and also recommend the Courtyard to friends and family.

Our first visit to the Courtyard. It’s just off the High Street in Tutbury and is larger inside than what I was expecting from the outside. It’s nicely decorated with a reasonable space between the tables.

This was a surprise 50th Birthday treat with my two sisters. The champagne breakfast consisted of 3 courses and a full glass of bubbles. The first course was a fruit platter, the second course was a selection from the menu (we had the classic cooked breakfast) and the third course was pancakes. The food was all freshly prepared to order, and the ladies in the restaurant were lovely. This was the first time I had visited, and I will definitely be returning in the future. The food was delicious and good quality. I would recommend this to anyone.

Friendly welcome from helpful and efficient staff. We've become regulars here as we love the atmosphere and the food is great. I've not written a review before, but tonight's meal was amazing! I had the new special: Blade of Beef...so tender, it just fell off the bone....with a beautiful rich gravy...on a bed of mash ....best meal I've ever had!

My daughter Kirsty had her baby shower here on 30th Oct 19 . The red carpet was put down for her arrival how lovely. What a wonderful afternoon at the Courtyard. Excellent service Heather and her staff couldn’t do enough to make this a wonderful occasion. The afternoon tea selection of sandwiches/wraps and amazing cakes . Unlimited tea and coffee . Of course the bar open for those who wished something stronger . The baby shower was arranged by her friends but I was so happy as this is by far my favourite place to eat and drink in Tutbury . Highly recommend for all occasions ♥️

We visited The Courtyard for a family Sunday lunch for a birthday. This is the third or fourth time we’ve visited, and whether it’s a casual afternoon pizza, Saturday night meal for two, or a Sunday roast, it’s always been excellent.

We had a great sunday lunch (both meat & vegetarian options!) with friendly service and a nice, quiet atmosphere. First visit here & will come again next time I'm in the village.

Tucked away in a a beautiful courtyard with enchanting outdoor lights leading up to the resturant. The Courtyard is a fantastic place to go on a hot day when you can sit outside and enjoy a gin, warm yourself up in winter with a hot chocolate and enjoy a well cooked hearty meal with friends and family. I have been a number of times and held my fathers 70th here in an afternoon, we are going back for my nieces 16th. Great atmosphere, lovely staff and fantastic food.

My parents live in Tutbury & my first visit here was for lunch on my mother’s birthday. I hadn’t realised the place existed, as it’s tucked away in a courtyard. However, after telling my husband how much I’d enjoyed it, we decided to pay a visit yesterday afternoon. Having previously had a light-bite I went for a pizza this time & hubby decided on one too. Wow!! Just about the best pizzas we’ve ever had! The base was really thin & the toppings were generous & so tasty. Huge size - we had a job to manage the side order of fries! The staff were friendly, the place was clean & the atmosphere relaxed. A pity the weather was not good, or we could have enjoyed the lovely outdoor seating. Will definitely be visiting again.

Re-visited after a very pleasant experience in July. The standard of the food was again excellent, the staff pleasant and efficient. This time we added wine from the varied offerings which was good. Again I ate more than I should have. Perhaps next time we should share a pizza and green salad instead of having one each! We will be back soon and are encouraging friends to visit. Tucked away in a beautiful Courtyard is this lovely little restaurant. We stopped by for lunch (5 minutes before the kitchen shut) however nothing was too much trouble. We weren’t made to feel that we had to rush our menu choice. The food was delicious, wine served at the correct temperature & the Staff were friendly and very accommodating. 5* Highly recommended.

Myself and 3 friends went on the evening of my 50th birthday and I cannot recommend the Courtyard highly enough. Brilliant atmosphere, amazing food and lovely, friendly staff. The whole place and Stevie Wonder even sang happy birthday to me just to round off a fabulous birthday. Thank you so much.

Four of us popped in on Sunday 25th August for lunch in the sun. We hoped it wouldn't be busy as we wagered many people would be using the opportunity for home bbq's etc. Fortunately, we were right and had a good selection of outdoor tables to choose from. Right from the start the owner was approachable, friendly and enthusiastic which really made us feel welcome (it's our first time here in over a year, certainly before the new owners took over)

The decor of this place is truly magical and quaint and the food is specular. The service was great and they accommodated to every one of our awkward requests. Just as we were about to leave the place was filled with the most outstandingly, calm and peaceful music, played by a saxophonist who was circling the restaurant.

An intimate restaurant with nice outside seating.Friendly staff,reasonably priced wine.Wonderful freshly cooked food. Doing their own Pizza which looked delicious can recommend the Rack of Lamb and Thai Green curry Chilean Merlot acceptable £2.40 for a glass of machine coke seems a bit much

Six of us visited the Courtyard for the second time and it was just as good as the first. Lovely menu. my seabass was great and four of our party that had steaks said they were delicious. Very good service and a lovely friendly front of house in Heather. We are already planning our next visit.

What a lovely late afternoon we had at the courtyard earlier!! Came in with my friend for a couple of drinks & a little bite to eat & it was spot on. Such a calming atmosphere compared to the weather outside!! We both had two rustic homemade pizzas, to then find out they had a 241 deal on all pizzas from 3pm until 6pm which was a bonus!! They were huge...so we took some of it home with us!! On to dessert...the red cherry cheesecake was to die for & my friend had the sticky toffee pudding, which was just as delicious. Thanks to all the lovely staff at the courtyard :)

Came for champagne breakfast to celebrate our anniversary and what a lovely experience it was start to finish. We arrived to balloons on the table and a ‘happy anniversary’ board (it’s the little things). Firstly, a nutritious fruit platter with a wide variety of fresh fruit for starter. To a scrumptious classic breakfast, which was absolutely delicious (would highly recommend). Finally, we were then served pancakes with your choice of topping; in which me and my husband chose Nutella. We definitely celebrated our anniversary in style, it was perfect and I could not fault anything. From attentive service off all of the staff throughout, to such a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Thank you to The Courtyard @ no12 and we will see you again very soon!!!

My partner had booked us a table at what looks like a lovely restaurant, When booking the table as a surprise they had offered to put balloons on our table due to it being my birthday...

My fiancée booked the courtyard for my birthday and it was absolutely wonderful. When we arrived the staff had put balloons on my table which made it very special! At the end of the meal they also brought out the dessert with candles in and all the staff sang happy birthday. They really went the extra mile to make my birthday really special.

On Tues my daughter got married we had our wedding party at the courtyard we were blessed with good weather and the courtyard garden was fabulous beautifully decorated very comfortable garden furniture .Heather and Nick and there team provided a wonderful venue the decore was excellent. Our food was enjoyed by everyone we had so many great comments from our guests the buffet was excellent constantly topped up with hot and cold dishes superb salmon .Nothing was too much trouble Heather and her team were professional but friendly great bar fantastic range of gins absolutely everything was perfect and we can't thank you all enough for making our daughter's wedding day a very special day to remember thank you Heather Nick and the courtyard team .

Had a fabulous 2 days here for my birthday weekend wouldn’t go anywhere else fabulous place either in door or out. On a warm summer day made my first visit to have lunch here with my wife (who has been encouraging me to go for a while). We both chose the margherita pizza with accompanying house crust dip and a side salad to share. The pizzas were huge and outstanding with ample topping - such a thin well cooked dough with nicely crusted edge. The dip was very tasty - an interesting addition. The salad was ample and and an interesting mix - the beans were an unexpected addition. I was surprised to find how substantial a meal this proved to be. I will certainly return soon and tell all my friends. Next time I will not drive there because they had an interesting selection of wines which I was unfortunately unable to sample.

Very relaxed atmosphere, excellent food, not rushed and friendly staff. A good dining experience. The menu is varied and suitable for anyone and would recommend the pizzas.

.We visited with friends for a Saturday night dinner. This was our first visit to the Courtyard. The food was lovely and we all really enjoyed it. The chicken with diane sauce was great and the desserts were really good too. They also have an extensive gin menu which my friend and I really appreciated. Afterwards we went to sit outside for a drink and there was no rush for us to go. This will not be our last visit.

My friend booked us in for afternoon tea here for a joint celebration. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was lovely! Very accomodating staff. Looking forward to returning to sample the main menu as the food looked gorgeous.

Went for a family lunch for Fathers Day! Couldn’t fault it! As close to a home cooked Sunday lunch as you could get. Lovely atmosphere, lovely food & lovely staff. Can thoroughly recommend it & will definitely go again.

I had a party here for 17 people and it was just amazing. Everyone is already asking me when I'm having another party here - it was fabulous food, the staff couldn't do enough to make the party the best. Nothing was a problem or too much trouble, they made a dessert to my dietary request - you only have to ask. They even booked the sunshine for me. The only negative I got from the partygoers was it finished too soon! Already planning my next one at this venue. Book and visit - you will not be disappointed.

Had a fantastic meal here for my 50th. Food was amazing, service was great and the staff were an absolute pleasure and they have a cracking gin list! Wound highly recommend and will be coming back with my partner.

Simply Awesome! Had a group of 25 and the service and food quality was second to none. All the food was tasty and enjoyed by everyone. My Mum had a great time!!! A big thank you to everyone for making the day faultless. 👍🏻

I thoroughly recommend the courtyard, whether your grabbing a coffee, lunch with friends, taking the kids for pizza or having an evening meal it’s a fantastic venue with attentive staff and most importantly quality homemade food. Since moving to the area last year it’s become mine and my family’s favourite.

4 steaks and a pizza, all the food was really nice, we had the steaks cooked different and they were all gorgeous, would highly recommend, welcoming service too.

Well set up restaurant- do not be put off by their website, there are chairs not stools to sit on! Food was good but perhaps not good enough for the price and description. My chips arrived undercooked, but when they were taken back and returned sizzling hot with a couple of extra minutes cooking were delicious. Pleasant staff

Went for lunch after it was recommended by my local hairdresser. Absolutely brilliant. Chilled atmosphere and fantastic food. Ate the halloumi burger which was very flavourful. Had the dessert of the day, which was a cherry covered cheesecake which was made in house that morning, and it was gorgeous, plenty to share for two. A good wine selection and the service was spot on, not intrusive but attentive. Would highly recommend. A new favourite.

We booked The Courtyard for our annual NCT meal (11 adults and 12 children) - we couldn't rate it higher. Food and drink were amazing, staff were great - faultless! And as we had pre-ordered food per family, the bill even came itemised per group.......AMAZING!!! Thanks for a perfect end to our holiday, you all went above and beyond x

This place has a lovely feel to it for food either lunch or dinner or just for drinks. Nice gin selection as well.

I booked a table here for lunch a couple of days before and it was explained to me that they also had a Baby Shower of 20 at the same time. We were given a table away from the group and were pleased that it wasn’t as busy as we had imagined. Our food was ordered quickly and was served about 15 minutes later. An Open Steak Sandwich, 2 Pizzas and Fish & Chips.

Lovely food with great friendly staff, we had a hiccup with the table not sure who was at fault but it was quickly rectified by the owner who was lovely. The espresso martinis were lovely and delicious steak and chips. Thanks for pulling out all the stops and making it an enjoyable night.
