Great staff, lovely atmosphere set within the castle. Menu was a refreshing change from the usual cafe/bar fayre and I was spoilt for choice. Drinks good, nice glasses for the right drinks. Food took a while but we knew it would as the staff had let us know. Food nicely presented, very tasty and generally well received by everyone in our party. My only gripe was the crab roll I ordered was dry and a bit sparse with crab but still very tasty. It's on the pricey side but I am happy to spend good money on good food. On the whole a nice lunch.

Tastiest food and friendliest staff we have ever had. Visited family for birthday celebrations today and everything was amazing. Every bit of our Sunday roast was so good. (Chicken x2, Beef, Brie and a Macaroni) along with great selection of veg gravy and yorkshires, all yummy. Friendly atmosphere, great service and never felt rushed. We had 1 child with us and staff were so good with everything. Thank you we shall definitely return x

We went to this venue to celebrate a good friends birthday. We sat in the courtyard area as up top was a bit windy. When we tried to order food we were told that only 3 side choices could be provided for the courtyard tables, but the full menu could be provided inside the building 3 meters away. How ridiculous was this. They also advertised a street food alleyway, again this was a lie and nothing was there to resemble a street food alleyway. £10 entrance fee for what!! Poor menu, poor service, we wont be back.

What a disappointment. Went there to catch up with friends ,have been a few years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it, oh dear , what a change. Our first choice was off the menu so we chose fish finger ciabatta. I know you have to be trendy these days but three tiny pieces of fish in thick batter are not what I call fish fingers. The batter had the strangest taste that actually made me reach. We think it may have had vinegar in it. I scraped the rest off ,which is when I saw how tiny the fish was. The hot fish had been put on lettuce garnish which had turned brown and slimy , the ciabatta was so hard I couldn’t eat it. We didn’t say anything because somebody else was paying for us and we didn’t want to make things awkward .

Good location, food overpriced. £11 for some banana bread and £12 for eggs benedict. Would be worth it if the service was up to scratch. Young lady 'served' us today, was too busy behind the till messing around on her phone to even notice me waiting, after about 2 mins when I saw her go on whatsapp I politely said excuse me to which she jumped and seemed surprised someone was waiting .... leaves a bitter taste. She forgot a question I asked her about the menu and she is letting the team down. Sorry for negativity but not good. If it helps, have been many times in the past with no issues but after today wont rush to spend £42 on breakfast

Can't rave about it as much as I used to, unfortunately. A one-course lunch and a small bottle of beer came to £25 pp, and service was very indifferent- before we ordered, we were warned that anything other than a Sunday roast would be subject to a delay- why?! - we had to ask to be served and even given menus upon seating, and were initially brought the wrong food. Good, not great.

Third time of visiting with family and friends and had booked in advance and was looking forward to a relaxing Sunday lunch to celebrate birthday. Service was non existent. Drinks delivered and glass requested but never arrived, never asked if more drinks required, plates cleared and no desert menu given, absolutely appalling service. Visited the Castle (which was wonderful and free of charge) and decided to have coffee and some lunch before moving on to Old Portsmouth. We were SO disappointed to find that the prices were exorbitant - hardly anything under £14.. When mentioning this to the waitress, we were treated with distain and veiled amusement so decided to continue on to Old Portsmouth where we knew there was much better value in equally pleasant surroundings. So disappointed but will never bother to return or recommend.

Sorry but this is a total rip off. I have previously been here in summer and complained because of waiting for coffees for half hour. But I wanted to give this a try for brunch. On paper it looks good. How can a steak brunch not fill you up? Wel if you have it here. I choose most expensive 16 pound brunch. I got a thin steak, one egg and two tiny hash browns. Oh don’t forget the cherry tomatoes on vine (that had been heated with leaves on so all bits of leaves were hard to separated from tomato’s ) plus bit of rocket. It’s something I could have knocked up in 3 mins with something from Tesco’s. The coffee was 3.90. So about 20 quid and I was starving after. Can’t come here again. Totally uncreative, over oriced and tight portions. Better to go to round tower for stack. It’s pricey but better.

Great breakfast. Steak and Eggs were banging and perfectly cooked. Egg runny, Steak pink and crispy hash browns, perfect. Sunday lunch was excellent- the pork belly I had was one of the best I have had - the pork cracking was perfect texture to cut and enjoy without cracking your teeth as some can do! Beef and chicken that the rest of the party had was similarly very good Only reason not 5 stars is the wine list is very basic - wines you can buy in a supermarket- it would be easy to go to an independent wine dealer and get a better variety of wines

For such an excellent seeing the food v was va major disappointment. The paradise bravado were soft diced potato cubes on a bland tomato sauce. The fish eaters were unimpressed with the squid and other overcooked fried bits. There was one vegan option, other than said patatas which were dull tasting cauliflower wings. While advertising "two for one tapas and cocktails" it was in fact only the cocktails that were 2 for 1 and it seemed they had one portion of alcohol across 2 drinks. Deeply disappointing. Will not be returning. What a waste of a glorious venue.

Sadly, we had a disappointing experience at the Courtyard Café this morning. The Vegetarian Breakfast (£9.50) looked less than inspiring and the almost burnt bubble and squeak item was dry and tasteless. The Fish Stack (8.25) was covered in bitter tasting crispy breadcrumbs, affecting the overall taste. The lattes (£3.50 and £3.80 for oatmilk) were ok but rather pricey. On top of that the WiFi didn't seem to be working and our enquiry was dismissed with the suggestion that it would probably work outside. It was raining at the time and we were sitting inside. An altogether underwhelming experience.

The Courtyard restaurant located at the Southsea Castle in Portsmouth has the potential to be a 5…but today they struggled. We arrived only 10 minutes after they opened and wanted to order the Sunday Roast. We were told that due to low staff they were sold out. I am not sure what happened, we assume that others made reservations for it (?).We were told that they were low on staff…maybe in the kitchen (?) as there seemed to be plenty of staff serving the outdoor tables with beverages…however for some reason when we ordered TWO coffees we were only given one…they came back to inquire if we wanted any more beverages, at this point we said no. Over 30 minutes later the salad we ordered still did not come out, we had to ask for it. When it came time to pay we waited a very long time, no one came to ask for payment, we had to track someone down. If we did not see so many staff members out and about we would of simply thought they were low on staff, but visually that did not seem a fact. The Americano we ordered was very good. It cost 3 GBP/approx. $4.15 USD, a little steep. The Buddha bowl consisted of baby spinach, 2 beetroot falafels, avocado slices, roasted butternut squash, harissa fried chickpeas, toasted pumpkin seeds, coriander and line tahini dressings 11 GBP/approx.$15.25 USD. It was extremely good. Something that was rather unsettling was that one of the waitress’s played with a customers dog, allowed the dog to lick her hands and then retrieved our napkins and cutlery without washing her hands. If what we ordered was not so good I would lower my rating, I turned a blind eye to things that I normally would not. In truth, that is unexceptable.

Thank you to Lauren for squeezing us in at the last minute! We were gutted when it was fully booked as it was our last night in Portsmouth, but a last minute cancellation by another table on a Saturday evening was just the luck that we needed and we’ve found our new favourite restaurant! We had the tapas of course and the pork belly, prawns and camembert really stood out as our favourite dishes, and we finished it all off with the dessert platter. We ordered basically the whole menu but everything was great, especially the veggie options which is surprising in a tapas restaurant. YOU NEED TO TRY THE COCKTAILS, such good value for 241, the cosmos finished me off. The cocktails weren’t watered down like you get in most restaurants either. Perfect place for a girls night, or going for a date and they are dog friendly too. I’d recommend timing your table for sunset, the courtyard is just beautiful and it really made our evening. Only thing I’d say is if you don’t like spicy food, be careful on some of the sauces as most had a kick and ask what is spicy (we all love it but it took us by surprise). The experience was great and we look forward to seeing you again next time!

We went to the Courtyard for lunch and were disappointed in both the food and hygiene of the place. We ordered an camembert and onion tart that had a horrid taste and bizarre texture and the ham, and cheese toastie had so much rocket (which it did bot mention on the menu) in it it was overwhelming.

We were very lucky it came in it’s original packaging. we parents who have children with serious allergies put a lot of trust in businesses in the food industry and there seems to be a lack of education and awareness . My friend recently got engaged and when asked what kind of things she wanted to do for her Hen Do she expressed an interest in going for Afternoon/ High Tea. In Portsmouth there are quite a few options for this sort of thing so myself and a friend did some research and found The Courtyard to be the best option as it is situated in Southsea Castle , the menu was suitable for everyone and the price was very competitive compared to others as we wanted a private room. Eg. Queens Hotel quoted £400 to rent the room alone! We booked The Courtyard a few months ago and was told the room was ours from 4pm-6pm. We asked a couple of times the likelihood of being able to come a little bit early so we could set up the room with decorations etc but was told 3.45 was the earliest we would be able to arrive. However when we arrived at the agreed time we found 1) we weren't in the private room we had viewed and booked and instead was squeezed into the smaller of the two rooms ( we were a party of 20) 2) the reservation card said from 3pm! I was quite disappointed to find they had the room under our name an hour earlier as it meant we had to frantically decorate the room with less time and some of our guests had already arrived! In my opinion the whole thing came across a bit disorganised from the staff as no one really seemed to know what was happening and drinks orders were being taken all over the place and it was a bit chaotic. The food itself was really nice although not all the desserts matched the menu. The chocolate and cointreau truffle were replaced by macaroons ( They were nice but cant help but feel they were a less than satisfactory replacement) . The afternoon tea also included either Tea, Coffee or Juice for £11 or for £5 you could have Prosecco, however we had to ask what was happening with this and had to prompt the staff to organise this coming out. One real positive was the way they organised a separate fruitless scone for the Bride and had her own afternoon tea brought out separately which I thought was a really nice touch and appreciated this being done. Some members of our party were disappointed with the portion sizes, however I think apart from the macaroons everything was quite generous.I feel like due to the occasion of the event, we wanted everything to be perfect and feel a little let down by the execution of the service. I feel like the staff were a little slow at clearing the tables once we were finished. At dead on 6pm we were told we had to start leaving- we knew we only had the booking for this time anyway but felt pressured to rush and get everyone to leave so the staff could clear up.I think I would come back here again with a friend for afternoon tea for a casual afternoon but would not book here for an event as I don't think they could manage a booking of this size.

Stopped by having had delicious and generous breakfast here in the past and coffee is good with friendly staff and a lovely historic setting. Decided on a cream tea as £4.95 but scones were not fresh and reheated until very hot and hard as rocks, we should have returned these as not pleasant to eat. The reason we chose a cream tea was because I was astonished a thin sliver of lemon cake cost £3 or a single muffin the same and I think the prices are too high for such a small portion.

¡Gracias equipo!

Looked around couldn't see any price list but bought 2 cans of pop for £2.50 each. That was an expensive and unwelcome surprise added to by the fact the cans were marked multi pack not to be sold separately. Good attraction - rip off cafe

I was quite disappointed to find our coffee being served in takeaway cups with milk in polystyrene cups. Neither of the items are recyclable. I thought we were supposed to be reducing single use plastics. The coffee was nice as were the cakes.

Treated to afternoon tea on a Sunday afternoon. Nice and polite atmosphere. Sandwiches very nice and the deserts were lovely. Unsure if it was worth the price though.

Took my girlfriend here for valentines day and it was some of the nicest food I've ever had. I was a bit wary of the food portions as fairly expensive restaurants are normally too small, but these portions were plenty big enough. Nice romantic atmosphere and great staff, very attentive without being overbearing!!

Lovely setting and a great menu choices but it is very pricey for what get, which isn't very big but did taste good also seems silly they are right next to a small local brewery yet they have nothing of theirs on offer.

This eatery is just excellent and a destination restaurant for casual eating or hire for functions !! Very nicely fitted out and atmospheric within Southsea Castle ... Henry VII would be proud ! The food is good, the menu imaginative, so have a lovely walk along the front then come here for lunch. Car Parking is no problem next door at the D-Day Museum.

13 of us descended on the Courtyard Cafe after a long walk along the seafront. They did a great job of providing different lunches for us which all arrived together. Everyone enjoyed the excellent food and great service.

I love this little cafe at southsea castle but it appears that today nobody wanted tea and cake customers. After not giving a seat t southsea cafe we arrived here. I asked for 2 sausage banquettes and a pot of tea for 2 for the lady to say we don’t serve until 1215. She repeated herself twice I said this is fine.. The tea arrived a pot but with no pot of water I had to ask for an additional water. Do they not know when serving tea a pot of hot water is suppose to come also. After receiving our banquettes at 1220 they were cold and onions were a minimal.. spending £21.00 I expect my food to be hot and the tea to be served correctly...

Had a good experience here, the setting is great as you can walk around the castle after, the food was delicious and a good price and our waitress (Ella) was very friendly and gave us good tips about the local area as we were visiting from Norwich.

Good quality Ingredients, nicely cooked and presented, nice room, value for money for the meal is a bit questionable but once you factor in some kind of premium for the location I guess it makes sense. You order at the till and food is brought to you, both times we ate there something was missed from the order, so that probably needs work ...

I have visited the castle many times, even had a coffee or two at the Courtyard in the summer sitting outside. This was the first time I have ever actually ordered food. I ordered the roast pork with a sweet cider.

We have eaten at the courtyard for many different occasions - most recently a meal with friends. Have always had a great meal and fantastic service! On this occasion we enjoyed MANY cocktails from the new cocktail bar and food wise my favourite the vegan platter. Enjoyed everything on it! Obviously :) ! always recommending to friends and family so thought it was about time I did it here too!

I popped in for lunch last week and had the steak salad (delicious by the way). Being a little bit of a carb fan I opted for a side of the chips with the three cheese dip. Wow, just wow, possibly the tastiest thing i have eaten for a while. If you haven't tried it yet I implore you to go and do so. The staff were super friendly and the surroundings are amazing.

Coffee is coffee? mmmmmmmm not really. I am not a coffee snob by any stretch but some places have the old mocha chocca double de caf with a twist of lemon and pinch of nutmeg mixed with hint cinnamon nonsense. I know decent from poor. This place served a really good coffee sourced from a local distributor/brewer. Only reason I never bought the beans to grind at home (which i will return to buy later) is i had just bought my quota. The service at the counter was done with a smile and helpfully and served to us outside by another member of staff with a smile. I always find you get what you give. Why some people treat people waiting on them like second class citizens i have no idea.Treat people how you expect to be treated I say. We had scones that were warmed up nicely. We had coffees instead of tea but weren't charged a huge amount more. I am a local fella born an bred in Southsea (yes, actually Southsea) and i get a bit fed up with all the nonsense to be honest. All the craft rubbish that is actually as mass produced as most). This place seemed to be honest and real...a lovely change from the norm in Southsea nowadays that is trying to be Camden and Brixton but failing miserably. We'll be back to eat properly. This place should rank higher in Southsea. Much Higher. Cheers all See ya soon.

My family have used the coach and horses for many years lots of different occasions. We have had birthdays uni leaving parties also sometimes we just pop in for a beer and burger, they always have great promotions on so you save money as well as have quality family time. Whatever the occasion the staff always give a warm welcome with a massive smile, they always do there best to accommodate any special requirements we may have nothing is too much trouble ever. We can even take our dog it's brilliant he gets a bowl of water and lots of cuddles everytime. Highly recommend
