never been before but will make a return, very easy to see why the court house were winners of the 4 in a bed show, got chatting to the very friendly owner and we were made to feel very welcome.

Had to leave a review as just outstanding! Amazing food served with smiles. We were warmly welcomed and both kept saying how delicious are meals were. Every detail is covered - from the varied menu to the high quality of the napkins - The Court House really do themselves proud. Thoroughly recommend - already booked in again!

This is a restaurant that gets better and better, the moment you walk in you are greeted warmly and the service is excellent. The choice of specials on the menu boards caters most tastes. The portion sizes are large so I decided against a starter to make room. For the quality, service and ambience the courthouse offers great value

Often use the courthouse as my go to for lunch and dinner. Been here on a number of occasions across the last 12 months and every time the food has been fantastic, great service and always incredibly hospitable, have 0 faults. Food is always piping hot and fresh, staff are always incredibly pleasant! I have 0 faults for this place, from one business to another great work! would 100% recommend! And there is 0 doubts this is the best place to eat locally.

The family gathered to celebrate my grandson’s birthday at the Court House for a rare family get together. There were seven of us. The welcome was warm, the service excellent and the food and portions were superb. All in all a thoroughly enjoyable couple of hours.

First time visit to this very popular eatery which also has outside seating at the rear. Four of us had a great dining experience, staff were welcoming and provided good service and did not rush us, despite it being exceptionally busy at 7:30pm. So glad we made an advanced booking! Besides the comprehensive menu, there was also a ‘Specials Board’ with plenty more choices. We shared 4 duck pancakes for a starter and I then had the Goan Chicken Curry and rice which was delicious and came with naan, a pitta bread, mango chutney and lime pickle. The side of chunky chips, we shared. There was definitely no room for a dessert.

I visited for lunch with my dad and my partner. We chose this place largely because my partner's vegan and they have a selection of vegan mains (falafel pitta, butternut squash tart, and a curry). As it happened, she wasn't feeling that hungry and just went for jackfruit wings (a starter) and chips. My dad had cod and I had the falafel pitta. We all had dessert too. The food was very good. I thought the pitta might have been a bit larger, but it was certainly well-filled and the chips - though not particularly rustic - were very chunky. The portions don't look large, but despite having had an early lunch I still wasn't really hungry by the evening. The only downside was a few issues with food labelling. My dad and partner both had the bakewell tart for dessert. That was described as coming with custard on the menu, but served with ice cream instead. (No mention of any substitution.) Further, my partner's jackfruit wings were marked vegan on the menu but the receipt only labelled them V (vegetarian) not VG (vegan). Indeed, I also noticed the crispy squid was marked V on the menu. These things were a bit off-putting, given that we'd come here because they seemed to have good vegan options. That's why 4* rather than 5*.

The food was delicious the service was excellent lovely friendly staff would definitely recommend to anyone. There were 19 specials on the board so if considering dining here don’t just rely on their online menu

2 Kiwis traveling in the UK! Our experience at The Courthouse was amazing! From the moment you step in the door you are greeted with such warmth and kindness! All the staff hubby and I had any interaction with during our overnight stay here were most helpful, kind and super friendly.. Showing a cameradie and team spirit with each other that can only come from enjoying where they work and that has to come from great management! The whole establishment is pristine and the overnight accommodation was very comfortable and cozy. Dinner was amazing.. compliments to the kitchen team! The bar and restaurant staff had us laughing and showed great interest in New Zealand, where we are from, making us feel like friends they had known for ages! I highly recommend a visit to this fabulous destination pub!

This is our favourite place to eat for the family. A great choice for all us either from the menu or the famous special boards prominently placed in the restaurant. The staff are first class as always and help creat a wonderful ambience. Unfortunately it is now getting so popular we are having to book earlier than usual. We will be back soon

Another amazing meal. Staff are so friendly and helpful. It’s so nice to always feel welcome. The menu has many family favourites and then the vast specials board menu is superb. So much variety on the menus. The salmon was cooked to perfection. The courthouse is spotless and the atmosphere is so inviting. I can’t wait for our next visit.

I wish I could give this more than 5 stars, what an amazing dinner with a wide menu choice!! I had the smoked salmon and prawn plate to start. The sirloin for main and was cooked to perfection, the steak melted in your mouth. Big thank you to the amazing team! I’m stunned by the bad review as I cannot wait to come back and try more of the menu!

Upon arrival sat down and up came a very pleasant young girl who asked about drinks to which i said not decided yet and have you Prawn Cocktail on the menu told no no soup either things you eat all your round at home so you expect them to be available in a restaurant, Asked about the Fish and Chips told only Haddock available which i cannot eat. Not all customers want Olives and Dips different ages like what they are used to should cater for all tastes surely? This was 3.45 on a Saturday so goodness knows what they will have available this evening to offer people. Perhaps trade not very good so cut down the variety as the Wooden Fender always had these items plus Steak and Ale pie and Liver and Bacon always on the menu. Hence we said well we are not stopping as nothing here for us so left and went to the Pier in Harwich where Prawn Cocktail and Fish And chips with choice of fish is always available all year round.

Great little find for an over night stay! The staff are fun and friendly lovely courtyard to sit in! Food is amazing, definitely coming back

I stayed a few days in October of 2019 at the Courthouse Inn and was completely charmed by both the history of the building as well as the owners, two very nice, hard working people! I loved sitting at the pub bar and talking to the local people who remind me of an old saying " There are no strangers here, only friends you have yet to meet"! Cant wait to someday return once they open up travels from the US again.

Booked in for lunch and a pint. The pub was empty except for two others in the bar. We were told by a waitress the menu was reduced 'due to covid' The cask beers are all off 'due to covid' and presumably the quality friendly service was also off 'due to covid'. Perhaps this establishment should look at others in the area which are offering quality service, a quality menu and real beer. Then they may get the customers the others are getting. Their web site clearly states:- 'finely kept real ales'. It doesn't. Could this be the new excuse for poor service, reduced quality, reduced choice, and put all the blame on covid?? We left.

This was an Sunday lunch invite by a friend for their 70th birthday.Food was absolutely lovely and staff including the owner very attentive but not over whelming. Would recommend to anyone and I understand my neighbour is booking his 70th birthday lunch there and my wife and I have an invite - so I can enjoy the experience all over again.

Stayed here last night as was visiting the zoo today,and what an absolutely cracking place.we were upgraded as it was our anniversary 5*,had a meal in there last night lamb pea and mint pie 5* room was lovely clean spacious staff couldn’t do enough to make the stay perfect and the breakfast this morning was lush.defo recommended and we will be back.

Ten best of friends from Country & Western scene met here on a Sunday early afternoon for lunch to celebrate a 70th Birthday. The room occupied by us was superb as it was personal and well laid out. The staff were very attentive and friendly, and when the selected food arrived it really looked appetising. We all had 3 courses and everyone praised the quantity and tastiness of all the food supplied. Also, now realising they supply Shepheard & Neme Ales its a no brainer to start using this venue again for further meals as a group and as couples . Yes Michelle was an excellent host and would highly recommend to visit this restaurant.

Excellent festive lunchEasily catered for a family of 14 just after Christmas. Excellent service and very tasty food (especially recommend the roast beef and (very tart) lemon tart) for a very reasonable price. No unnecessary pomp or ceremony, simply good food served by attentive staff in a traditional setting. Will happily visit again.

Earlier this week nine friends met for a Christmas catch up. We pre booked our lunch which was excellent. The staff were efficient, cheerful and checked with us periodically that everything was to our liking. I could not fault anything. The food was tasty, served hot and plentiful. We were relaxed not rushed. There were other diners eating. I would recommend and we have all booked to go back.

Had another lovely meal at The Courthouse, food was delicious, service and staff were excellent. Roast beef & Roast Turkey, son in law had the steak & kidney pudding, as always very tasty and delicious could not be faulted exceptional. Both children enjoyed their meals and ate everything on their plates. Thank you, will be back again soon.

Visited on a Friday lunch time with a friend. The food was brought to the table nice and hot which is essential as far as I am concerned. My friend's fish was lovely and fresh. We were served quickly and the staff were very friendly. The only downside was that there were very few diners so it lacked atmosphere. It deserves to be more popular.

Nice out of the way place, quirky furniture and nice staff. Unfortunately breakfast was served too late for me to partake!

We were a party of 11 walkers who ate at the Court House yesterday after our walk around the local area. The service was very friendly, especially from Rachel and Jordan who served us in a very efficient manner and checked that we had everything which we required.The food was delicious and cooked to perfection. Several of us ate the sea bass and the remainder ate a selection of various dishes. We all cleaned our plates! We will return!

We have been here a few times and are always pleased with meals. Staff attentive and restaurant surroundings pleasant. Overall experience was excellent!

We had to wait 20 minutes to be seated in a practically empty restaurant and then we were served overpriced mediocre food which was clearly frozen pre made items brought from a supermarket/wholesalers. Thoroughly disappointed and will not be going back.

Booked a large party of friends for Sunday Lunch 23rd. June 2019. Excellent food and good size helpings. Service also excellent. A very good selection of Wines and Beers, all at very reasonable prices.

Visited with friends for a social pint or two. From the moment we walked through the door we were greeted with a smile and nothing was too much trouble. The atmosphere is very welcoming and the staff can’t do enough to make sure the clients are enjoying theirselves. The owners even came along to see that we were ok and could they do anything to make our stay more enjoyable. I for one will be returning to this great British pub.

Visited today 18th June almost empty in there more around the bar drinking. Young girl server came up to take our order. She said soup is golden vegetable so we both ordered soup. On the menu it stated with roll and butter. The soup arrived after a fair wait for it and so did the roll and would you believe the usual little butter pat which had already had the foil lid removed. I wondered why? Firstly the roll was a soft bap the type meant to be used for a Burger dry and horrible. Looked at the so called butter it was a margarine yellow colour. Tasted it guess what it was margarine, Ate the soup nothing special at all. When girl came back to clear soup bowls I said to her that is vegetable spread or margarine definitely not butter. Her reply I do not know I do not work in the kitchen, I said well tell them the roll was bad enough as it should be a crusty roll with soup. And on the menu it states butter so it is dishonest to then serve margarine. Now know why the foil lid was removed before being bought to the table. Because that would have stated no doubt margarine. Girl asked did I want to order anything else I said no. As it now stood out a mile they cut corners here trying to pass margarine off as butter what else would they get up to? Husband asked for the bill. When the girl brought it to the table I asked her what did they say in the kitchen about passing off margarine as butter. Her reply was so quiet barely audible it was obvious she had said nothing to anyone. As to her this was normal I should think cutting corners. here so why comment she was not surprised at all, If it had been a genuine mistake she would have said sorry and took the roll away and the margarine as I had spread some on the roll and bought me another. No this was no mistake. And in all my years of eating out have never been served butter with the lid already removed which says it all. Well you lost out as we never ordered dinners which we intended, And we will never come back there ever. No doubt most of your customers are elderly I am myself but not that daft that I cannot tell margarine from butter. We eat out a lot so you have done yourself no favours here at all.

Booked and not told about a wedding booking they had and that kitchen would be unavailable early afternoon, asked for separate bills at beginning then made to feel this was an inconvenience at end. Manager called friend a lier to face, saying they had informed of wedding, felt very rushed and very unprofessional management. Food on the whole tasted ok, some of the group didn’t feel it was worthy of the price (mine however I enjoyed). However due to way management treated a large group with a bill of over £150 would not recommend or return.

A large group of friends and I chose here for lunch, we had reserved and also let them know a couple were running late due to the distance they were travelling, only then were we told that we had limited time due to a wedding coming in. I think that maybe we should not have been booked in if we were not going to have time to place a large order and eat, the food was nice but we felt rushed

New landlord, refurbished, quirky, fab carpet! Dropped by on route to harwich port. Incredibly helpful staff. Really good old school English dishes with excellent service. Deserts were too good to share! Landlords took time to seek us out to tell us we’d left the car lights on in car. Good parking and access to accommodation

We stayed here for one night whilst in the area for a funeral. The accommodation was in a 'quasi' stable block behind the pub, so it was quiet, with each of the 6 rooms named for a famous race horse (Red Rum, Desert Orchid etc.). It was very comfortable and the staff were extremely friendly and efficient. The food was good, home cooked pub food, reasonably priced, and the full English breakfast was a treat.

Nothing was too much trouble at our planned lunch for twenty last weekend. There was good communication between The Court House and ourselves in the lead up and on the day the welcome was warm, our room looked beautiful, the service was excellent and the food delicious. Twenty happy diners. Friendly efficiency. Highly recommended.

I grew up spending weekends not far from this traditional pub and restaurant - and have many happy memories of Sunday afternoons with parents and grandparents. Today, it is a little different, but still with its oldy-worldy charm inside, and it has a lovely outdoor seating area at the rear. The staff are very friendly and are always happy to stop and have a chat about the local area and its history. Ask about the hauntings! Oh yes, and the hangings!

Went here with family for Mothers day. Food is always good. I was disappointed that the menu was almost the same as a usual Sunday lunch menu but the price was £5 more.

My wife and I had our anniversary meal tonight and we were delighted with everything from start to finish. The service was excellent, the food was excellent and the settings were excellent. Highly recommended.

We’re a group of 9 and usually venture into Colchester town for our gatherings to catch up over a meal and drinks, but this time we venture out and discovered the Court House.

Michelle & her team gave mum & all of her family and friends a great afternoon that she thoroughly enjoyed.

The Court House is a gem. A group of us from Harwich U3A Bookclub recently enjoyed Afternoon Tea here. There was a wonderful selection of sandwiches, scones and cakes. The scones were served accompanied by bowls of whipped cream and tiny pots of Tiptree strawberry jam, which was a nice touch. To finish we all had large strawberry tartlets. Fresh pots of tea served in beautiful teapots kept arriving.

Home cooked food is available from the varied menu and, if it is not busy the menu can be adapted for you. The bar is stocked with at least three ales and there are other beers and ciders also on the pumps as well as the bottles.

I met with 2 friends to have a pre Xmas meal. We had choices off the 1/2/3 course menu. I had roast beef, Yorkshire pud, roast potatoes, green beans, sprouts and asked for peas as do not like carrots. Very lovely meal, full of flavour.

Four of us went for Sunday lunch and had a nice meal. Service was prompt and very friendly without being in your face. They were accommodating to all our specific requests without fuss. Tap water with lots of ice was met with a glass of water and a separate glass of ice which allowed mother to adjust to taste.

We visited here today for a beautiful fresh first class sunday roast all home cooked and no frozen veg , they actually peel there potatoes! the desert was so tasty and again home cooked, service was very quick an efficient with a clean and friendly atmosphere , will certainly be visiting again .

My wife booked the court house hotel as a surprise birthday treat we arrived Fri evening and were made very welcome by the owner who showed us to our very nice chalet room (red rum) it had everything we needed reaĺly comfy bed wet room fluffy white towels ,we ate in the restaurant that evening our meals were very enjoyable and the service was impeccable by aĺl members of staff , we had breakfast which once again was cooked and served well I'm sure if we come back this way in the future we will book the court house hotel what else can I say a very pleasant 2 night stay

we were attending a family party nearby and booked in to stay. Very smart rooms in the stable block which are clean and comfortable. Had a good nights sleep and a very tasty freshly cooked breakfast. Would definitely recommend this place.

Have eaten their twice for lunch on a weekday (May & March 2018) both times excellent food, good menu choices, great service and a nice atmosphere.

The food choice was a little limited - think this was a Sunday thing - but it was very nice and well presented on hot plates. The service was impeccable, friendly and extremely professional. This inn is somewhat tucked away but well worth a visit.

We had turned up just as they had closed the kitchen, so turned to leave but we were offered a small selection of ‘simple’ pub meals. Were very hungry so took them up on this very kind offer! Had the venison pie and their take on fish and chips. Plenty of food, very good value for money and a delicious meal!

The Sunday Roast was very good. The staff are friendly and the service was great. The building has some age to it and is nicely decorated.

We had a wonderful Dinner for 62 people eating lovely Roast Beef & all the trimmings, plus choices of wonderful home cooked sweets. The service was wonderful considering our numbers, and we would recommend this restaurant to anyone where there are a small party or large. Obviously large groups would have to book in adance.

We booked in advance as it was for Sunday lunch on the 18th of February the staff were great and they put us in a nice window bay that could acomedate our group service was great and food was excellent. We will, defently go here again and also very helpful with my wife who is disesabled thqay put ramps down so to get access and price was very reasonable ...thanks for making us so welcome.......we're be back.........

Cosy restaurant . We phoned to prebook a table . We were seated near a radiator , but the whole place felt warm .

I was given a voucher for The Court house and to be honest was wary as had visited it some years ago and been unimpressed.

We enjoyed a lovely meal chosen from a very good and varied menu. The staff were delightful. The old building full of charm and interest. We will be returning.

It was a Very good venue for our works Christmas party. There was only eight of us in our party but the room had two other parties in as well. The food was excellent hot and tasty and the service was very good. The room was pleasantly decorated and the table had crackers. We have decided to have next years Christmas party here again next year.

We don't often eat out but to celebrate our wedding anniversary we booked a table for lunch. The car park was full which showed the popularity of the place. The food was good, so was the service in spite of being busy. There was a friendly feel to the place and we will certainly be going again in the future.

We visited as a family group of 6 early Saturday evening and were made very welcome in this delightful pub. Its well supported by the locals and you can just prop up the bar for a drink without eating. The staff were helpful and friendly and the food served piping hot.

Our classic motoring club (Club Triumph) used The Courthouse as the finish point for one of our rallies. They were very accommodating, with over 24 persons arriving in small groups for lunch, and coped with it perfectly. The food was good, prices were good and the service excellent. They looked after us very well and we will use them again in the future. Thanks to Michelle and team.

An early evening meal at The Court House, booked in advance with excellent communication from the staff. Good menu but the three of us went for speciality pies and suet puddings as the main course - yummy! Desserts to follow - white chocolate cheesecake and sticky toffee pudding and custard - equally yummy! Quick and friendly service with the opportunity to chat to a number of staff and the owner that gave a real family feel and added to the enjoyment of the evening. Little touches make the difference, and offering to open a fire door for my registered blind aunt so she could leave avoiding the tricky little steps at the entrance was much appreciated. Although not living locally, this is somewhere we would definitely return to when we are next in the area. Well done!!

We had a delicious 3 course Sunday lunch at the Court House. Very reasonably priced and each course from the Tempura King prawns with chilli sauce for a starter, to the roast beef with crispy roast potatoes and a lovely selection of fresh seasonal vegetables, to the mouthwatering raspberry ice cream cake, we thoroughly enjoyed our meal and will be making a return visit.

I must admit I was in the area and this wasn't the first place I rang for a birthday meal but I'm so great i did. Amazing staff and service. They even out our happy birthday decorations. Would definitely recommend. That's me for a great afternoon :)

We have eaten here on several occasions and each time the food has been fantastic. This previous experience prompted us to book and hold a family event here on a Sunday lunchtime. They managed to serve 38 people with a piping hot two course Sunday lunch of exceptional quality. The vegetables were first class and each differing dish was of quality food. Not one guest had any complaint and many said they would return. They undertook virtually all the arrangements and the service on the day excelled. Can truthfully recommend this venue to all.

Tonight we popped into our local for a bite to eat, they were really busy but the waitress was really lovely and soon had us seated.My son had one of the specials The T bone steak with all the trimmings, my husband had gammon and I too had steak but mine was sirloin.All dishes were served piping hot and tasted yummy!Our waitress (pretty young blonde girl) was super friendly and it was a pleasant evening. Poor management and service. Had to wait over an hour for food. While warned of a delay it is unacceptable for others to be served two courses and later arrivals served food while we were made to wait.

My wife and I have visited The Courthouse on several occasions over the last few years during our annual visits from Burnley,Lancashire to Harwich,normally during august.we have always felt welcomed and the food is well cooked and really very good with a good selection of meals.word of warning watch out for the Beer (spitfire at 4.1%)it is really quite strong tasty though.we look forward to our visit again next year (2018) I just hope the lovely lady in charge is still talking to me.

We enjoyed Sunday Lunch today at The Court House. After a warm welcome, the food and service as always was great. We choose Roast Beef which was perfectly cooked with loads of crispy roast potatoes and parsnips. The choice of fresh vegetables served separately accompanied by a jug of delicious gravy was a joy. Attention to detail was a credit to Michelle and her lovely team. I am Coeliac and the great gluten free choice of main courses and desserts was so attractive. Highly recommended ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Went to the Court House for Sunday lunch- excellent value £17.95 for three tasty courses. Attentive and helpful staff- hope to go there again.

Michelle and Robert looked after us extremely well and went that extra mile to make us enjoy our stay. The rooms were excellent, the bed very comfortable. The evening meal was superb, staff superb. Hope we will get a chance to cone again.

During our stay we enjoyed 3 days worth of evening meals, The sunday roast melted in your mouth, the Mixed grill my partner had was huge, although he still managed to eat a giant chocolate-nut sundae after. we had a light lunch before we left to head home and we both tried the traditional ploughmans which gave us ther fuel we needed to head back home.hope to visit again august bank holiday

We booked for 10 people for our nan's 94th birthday party and arrived to a warm welcome. Balloons and 'happy birthday' banners had been put up in a separate area of the pub seating the 10 of us perfectly. Staff also wished Nan a happy birthday on arrival and departure and could not have been more accommodating.One of the party is dairy intolerant and the staff made the kitchen aware and advised on what items included dairy and where this could be avoided. The restaurant had dairy free cream and meringues that made dessert easy. As there was 10 of us there was a slightly longer than anticipated wait for the food, but it was fresh and hot and there were no complaints. This is the second time we have had a celebration at The Court House, was 7 of us last time and again food was excellent. We sampled the Sunday Lunch this time around and the roasts were very good. Plenty of vegetables for all. The price was extremely good value for money and we all had a lovely time.

This is an old pub that does a good selection of food. The service was very helpful and friendly and the food was great.

We really enjoyed our meal and atmosphere at the court house.Staff were friendly and the food was great,will definitely be returning in the near future
