I Love Bolam & the Countryman, which didn't Disappoint ; for ME. However: 'She who must be Obeyed' Stated; the Plain/Painted? Wood Tables were 'STICKY'. Our Sunday Lunch was TASTY & Enjoyed by ALL Four. However: 'One' was Not Pleased & won't visit Anymore. Folk have to Accept the Rustic Appearance which is Uniquely, Nice. Staff were Fun & Efficient, Allowing us to change Our Table: Twice! My Advice is to See for Yourself : Because some 50 Diners can't be Wrong. Perhaps Table Cloths will settle the Quandry : 'A Ha'prth of Tar' won't Cost A Song!!😁

The Countryman has been a much-loved pub for decades. We dined there recently, and it brought back many memories. Whilst the traditional aesthetics may not be to everyone's liking, look beyond that and enjoy the fantastic food. A great choice range of food, served piping hot and generous portions. Food is highly recommended 👌

We stayed on the campsite in our campervan for two nights with friends. Booking process was easy, our friends arrived before us and spoke with reception and were given both our pitch sites which was fortunate as when we arrived at 5:15pm both the reception and pub were closed. The pitch sites are great, a really good size and where we were right at the bottom of the field fairly flat but we did need our ramps. The toilets were ok, housed in a wooden hut, clean enough with two hand sinks but nowhere to but a toilet bag other than the floor while washing. There was also one shower in there but I didn’t use. A make friend used the separate shower block but said they were quite cold. The pub is only open for two hours on an after noon and while we were there two and a half hours on the evening. We had a meal there in the Saturday evening there was a two for twenty pounds offer and the food was very good, drinks were also reasonably priced. There isn’t anything to do within easy walking distance but the views from the park are really beautiful. I would return if with friends but not as a couple.

The large car park was quite full but there was ample room for more cars when we arrived. This provided evidence that the inn is very popular. We went to the bar where there was a large queue. Eventually a waiter checked that we had booked. She took us through the inn to the back and showed us our table. We then discovered we had to return to the bar queue to pay for our carvery meals and drinks. From entering the inn to paying for our meals it took 40 minutes. Surely the waiter should have been at the other end of the queue then take us to our table. We went to the carvery but the gammon was finished off by a group of six in front of us. I selected turkey and pork then helped myself to the array of cooked vegetables. I could not find the Yorkshire puddings. They were in a deep container at the end of the carvery. The carvery meal was very tasty. None of us could find room for a dessert. We will definitely return for a meal at this inn.

In any 'normal' year I would not be writing a review of a British campsite. However, 2021 is anything but normal and we joined a legion of staycationers. We hired a motorhome and began to tour various parts of the north-east. Our odyssey began in lovely North Yorkshire and went northwards into stunning Northumberland. I'll review the 4 sites that we stayed at, but please bear in mind that it's a long time since I went camping and I am no expert. Site 2 The Countryman, Bolam, County Durham. Following on from our stay at Serenity Camping we boked a few days at The Countryman and Countryview camsite at Bolam in South Durham. The campsite lives up to its name with far-flung views over the Durham Dales. Pitches were on grass, large and mostly sloping. The clientele was much younger than on the other campsites we visited, often extended family groups in adjoining pitches. Partying took place and the ambience was lively, although there were no noise issues. Facilities were basic: toilets, washing up area and 2 showers that you had to make an appointment to use. A bit strange we thought though it was a Covid summer. The pub was serving drinks and meals. Hours of opening were limited and we experienced the pub shutting before advertised closing time when not busy. Inside, the decor is dark and dated- it needs a spruce up and a lighter, more modern feel. The place looks semi closed even when open and lacks a welcoming and busy feel. Bolam is a bit remote and it's not possible to pop anywhere, so be organised. Hamsterley Forest is a superb outdoor choice for cyclists, trekkers, birdwatchers and for family activities such as the Gruffalo Trail. In summary, this campsite has lots of potential but, in my view, would benefit from a more welcoming feel.

We have just got back from a weekend away with friends at the countryman and we had a fantastic time. The camping pitches 12 & 13 are huge with the most amazing views. We ate in the pub on Friday night and the food was lovely and the staff although only young were absolutely brilliant and attentive. We then got a takeaway from the pub on Saturday and that was beautiful and very well priced. I did have concerns about the facilities as we were advised due to Covid that the staff would not be cleaning throughout the day (it’s good to see they value their staff) however cleaning materials were provided and the facilities were never dirty Today when we were packing up the lady who booked us in came around to check everything had been ok which was nice as you don’t often get a personal touch at campsites. The kids said it was the best play park ever and they can’t wait to return and neither can we

Excellent.Just visited the Countryman Pub for lunch with friends Friday 31st July. We booked in advance. They are doing very well considering the current circumstances. We were shown to our table the lady serving was in full ppe, we felt very safe. The pub is a country pub and it was lovely to see all the original character has been kept, it is what you would expect to see in a country pub.It also has a very modern twist with a beautiful colour scheme throughout. Our drinks and food order were taken at the table. Drinks were served to our table very quickly considering there were quite a few in.Our food order was served quickly and professionally. We all ordered the large cod and chips and home made mushy peas. We also got bread and butter. Wow amazing, the fish were enormous and tasted just like fish shop fish and chips, the batter was crispy and golden. Well done The Countryman, your getting it all right.Good job we did not take notice of some peoples comments, our experience was excellent.Pubs are having a hard enough time surviving at the moment. my husband and I and my granddaughter booked a sunday carvery, which we were looking forward to. the meal itself was piled up like a food mountain, everything was cold so we asked for it to be re-warmed but it was still cold. the drinks were put in the wrong glasses, eg, water in a guiness glass and my granddaughter had a long hair in hers. we had no knifes or forks, or table mats, or salt or pepper, or serviettes. so we asked for salt and pepper, they through it on the table and we had to go searching for the serviettes. the mash was heavy and cheesy, the cooked potatoes were so dry and rock hard. my yorkshire pudding was crunchy and burnt. the whole meal looked rushed. this was so disappointing because the meals were lovely. never going here again!!

I have always recommended this place but no more . I had a Sunday dinner take out afew weeks back and it was very disappointing, frozen vegetables ect and a large price tag to go with it . I went with my family on Sunday as a treat , the young bar staff dont have a clue and they dont have many drinks in stock and also dont provide the correct glass as to the drink u order ie a peroni and give you a Guinness glass which makes your drink go flat as soon as you pour it. There was only one bamberie on with limited frozen veg available, some missing and out of stock. I used to love this place but since my last visit its terrible the price and the food is very disappointing. I dont leave reviews to upset people but for venues to read and take into account , we pay money and except a decent meal . I payed £70 and I wash I had just make it myself !

Visited the Countryman with family recently. My wife and I both had the chicken Parmo which was extremely overcooked accompanied by slimy brown salad and near burnt chips which were covered in black crumbs (which is evidence that the fryers haven't been cleaned out in quite a long time). I asked the waitress for some garlic mayo, the mayo had also seen better days, there was a congealed film on the mayo aswell as around the actually metal pot. The waitress really did her best but it's difficult to do the job of 2/3 people on front of house. We would have ordered desserts bit we just felt awful asking the waitress as we could see she was really struggling. We won't be returning in a hurry!

No real ale (in this day and age ?) and the keg Black Sheep had just run out. No offer to put a new keg on. I was offered one filthy pint glass after another in which to pour my bottle of Newcy Brown (seemingly the last one in the fridge). Took an age to get our drinks and also to pay as we left. Plus points - reasonably good fairly priced soup and excellent chips ad the small staff remained cheerful, but boy they really do deserve some back up ! Would not rush back. Wanted somewhere with a handy place to eat without needing to cook. Very friendly helpful staff, quite basis as others have said it is a field behind a pub but it is surrounded by countryside, sheep and horses. Toilet and shower block small but clean. We had 3 nights at the Countryview camp site attached to the Countryman Pub and it was a lovely little site. 20 pitches or so, most with electric hookup. It was fairly flat and very sheltered with fab views (altho hampered for us by the mist and drizzle!) and hard standing for cars/caravans. The site is literally surrounded by fields with sheep and horses so it feels very ‘away from it all’. The village of Bolam itself is tiny - no shop but there are towns nearby if you need it.

Excellent value for money with plenty of well cooked food to fill the larger stomach.I am not a lover of the blanch the veg brigade,it was easy parking,we went on The 20th dec as there was an offer of the Christmas Fayre at £8 for 3 courses, at that price a bargain.will be going again.

Four of us booked a table for 7-30pm. Drinks ordered at bar by very pleasant girl. Although we had booked where told just to sit anywhere. Meal order taken at table and it was no problem for her to keep going to kitchen as we had a few questions. Meals came on hot plates which is a great plus for me nicely presented with veg in separate dishes. Very good value for money.

Mejor Asador domingo alrededor.

Called this pub at 8.30 pm to see if it was serving meals, they would remain open until we arrived, we were staying local but traffic on motorways was terrible, they obliged our request and cooked a super steak and trimmings. They also catered for my colleague who was dairy and egg tolerant. Complements to the chef and thank you for a wonderful meal and welcoming atmosphere.

We stopped at the campsite at the back of the Countryman whilst working in the area.Campsite is immaculate and a hidden gem - replacement toilets and shower block being built now so that will only improveWe ate twice whilst here one lunch (2 for just over £10) and the Carvery today. Both were well worth what we paid We will certainly stop here again when working back up here later in the year.

Staying at the campsite behind the Countryman pub, we decided to try out for our evening meal, what a delicious meal thoroughly enjoyed the experience, the pub was buzzing with dinners, all seemed to be enjoying the food, plenty on the menu to choose from only criticism there was too much to choice it all sounded delicious, would thoroughly recommend the pub

We only go at lunch time, but find the menu offers enough choice to suit all of our tastes, there is the normal menu, plus lunch time specials. We have never been disappointed with the quality, and the prices of food and drink are very good value. All served by friendly and pleasant staff in a very clean charming pub, what could be better.

Big group for a birthday party we had to pre order our food before arriving as we had a large party. Once all there the food all arrived together so we all ate together which was really good work given such a large party. Food and drinks were all very good and staff really friendly and helpful. Would recommend a visit and will be returning in the near future.

I have passed the road end to this pub many times, and eventually decided to try it for a lunch. The pub is well laid out, clean, and has a nice country feel about it. The menu really has something for everyone and the food is of good quality, with generous portion sizes. The server was very pleasant, well mannered, attentive, and polite. My wife and I joined "the pensioners lunch club" which offers excellent value. We will certainly be back in the very near future.

I came with my parents for a birthday meal and we had the carvery. To be honest, it was dull and disappointing. Cauliflower/broccoli were so mushy it was hard to tell if it was in cheese sauce or not, the roast potatoes were tasteless and the boiled cabbage looked so unappetising. The good Yorkshire puddings, and tasty, well cooked beef were not enough to rescue the meal, unfortunately. We'd never been before and so naturally had questions about how to order etc., but staff just looked at us like we had two heads. I am assuming most people are regulars who know what to expect, but it might be a good idea to ask when people arrive if they've been before (or at least put signs up regarding the different size meals available and how to order). Some of the staff were really nice and welcoming but a couple of them really let the side down, especially one of the bar staff who was unable to crack a smile or offer any information.Overall, I can see the appeal for people wanting to skip cooking Sunday lunch themselves, and although the price was reasonsble (£30 for one small meal and two mediums plus three drinks), I will not be returning!

Because our visit coincided with Mothers Day the bar & restaurant was packed, but credit to the staff & especially the chef they coped extremely well with the hoards of customers. The carvery was excellent, choice of beef, pork, turkey or gammon & a good variety of vegetables. Will certainly recommend this place for food, especially if you like a hearty, well cooked, Sunday lunch. However, the beer had an unusual, unpleasant taste & at £3.40 a pint should have been better. So if you are a beer drinker you may be disappointed.

Heard lots of good things about this place, so as we'd never been before, decided to go for Sunday lunch. Would recommend booking, as we did, as there were a couple been turned away as we arrived because they hadn't booked. We all decided on a medium sized lunch apart from the younger one having a small, and reasonably priced at £7.95 so after spending around £60 on lunch and drinks, imagine how disappointed I was when my daughter accidentally dropped her plate before getting to where the veg was served and then been told that we would have to pay again In order for her to get some meat, very very bad customer service indeed. We probably would have returned but probably won't bother.

We used to frequent the countryman quite often and always enjoyed our visits.Sadly we were there on a Friday night and we're surprised to find only one couple in when we arrived at about 7 o'clock, the alarm bells started to ring and they weren't wrong. The young lad serving was very pleasant and our meals arrived very quickly.the steak I ordered (medium rare) came well done and for some reason tasted of melted plastic?.my wife's steak was a little better but the chips were a black as the roads .Altogether a very disappointing evening and I can't understand why in a couple of years how the food has gone downhill.i hope it was just a bad night for the sake of the pub

Met friends for a light lunch 2 meals for 12.95 not bad at all it was my friends birthday and her mum had the pensioners lunch ... it came out after an average waiting time and looked lovely to be honest ... my friends mums potatoes were horrendous and we told staff.. they said yeah he's going to change the potatoes next batch from the veg man ( why serve them )??? Then my chicken Kiev looked lovely and it was definitely homemade but the chicken was sour tasting ! I told staff and she said she would alert the chef who said it wasn't and didn't bring my plate back with the rest of my food on.. when she walked past with plates in her hand to serve someone else she casually asked "would you like the rest back or not " I told her no and I wasn't paying she said you've eaten some of it but I had to try some to know that it was sour .. I hadn't touched the chips or side salad it had come with and the rest of my party were only a third through their lunch ... anyway they charged me full and I will never go back they were rude, the glasses were dirty and overall it was just a dark and dingy place to eat and very out dated !

I last reviewed this place in 2019 where my main issue was poor service and would you believe it things haven't changed. Service today was non existent. We were seated for over 10 minutes .... Not even a greeting. Front of house totally disorganised. It's a wonder the floor covering wasn't worn out because of the too-ing and fro-ing which never seemed to produce anything. This service is the worst I've experienced anywhere.. Cone on.... Get a grip !

Parking is plenty and is a one way system, so don't try to get to the front out of laziness or you could get stuck during busier times and end up having to go back out and round into the main dual carriage way and roundabout if there is too much traffic. The parking is free and it is a gravel car park . As you enter there is a sign to wait to be seated, but don't wait if there are plenty of seats, as you'll be there forever. I think the sign should be put away during quiet times and brought out in busier times. Once seated it's easy to order, choose what you want from the menu and go to the counter (remember what your table number is). Massive cake/sweet selection at the till area so I suggest having a look there as well for sure! At first glance £4(something) for a Melba is a bit much but then when you see the size of it, it's fair. Delicious too! They have take away boxes as well, yum! The last time I went I tried the hot beef bap and it was really good, no chewy, gristle or fatty bits in the meat at all. Spot on. Time before was the cheese pie which I absolutely loved (my lactose intolerant body however rejected it, but was still worth it and I'll do it again NGL). The majority of the staff are lovely, I've never felt anyone has been rude (even when they seemed to be having a crappy and busy day). Have been a few times now and definitely will go again. Edit: it's also (well behaved) dog friendly.

A hidden gem of a pub. We were recommended by a friend to seek out this place just off the main road between the Eden Arms Roundabout and Newton Aycliffe. Good friendly staff. Food was lovely .Little Jill had the Pie of the day, Chicken and Ham, I had the Gammon. Both were really lovely. The only gripe i had was the overflowing wall mounted cigarette bin at the main door it was unsightly and off putting to us non smokers. Maybe move it or empty it more often. Only a little gripe and will not put us off returning.
