The pictures are a little bit misleading. The beach bar is a little bit neglected and I am afraid it doesn’t match with the true spirit of the montague on the garden hotel. This hotel is genuinely British in its style, design and decor. No words to describe the leopard bar, just amazing. Service was courteous, spicy Cajun chips delicious. Room for improvement for the beach bar, all the rest was good.

Not worth the money! No vegetarian, gluten free or alcohol free option menu. Tiny amount of food. One 1/4 sausage not more than 2 inches long with mustards swirled over set on a tablespoon of sauerkraut, 2 nuggets served on a tablespoon of mashed potato and gravy, and a deep fried Camembert cheese on cranberry sauce-which was the only nice thing! The drinks were awful. The floor was extremely slippery as you walk down the stairs following the snow machine so much so a lady slipped. When a group were laughing the waitresses told them to keep quiet as guests were in their rooms asleep-what at 20.30!? Food wise the option was for three drinks the first came immediately but waited over 3/4 of an hour for the second drink and this left insufficient time to finish the third one as it was given to us 4 min before our hour was up. When time was up you were ushered out of the lodge whether you’d finished or not and there’s no option to sit inside the hotel thereafter despite us being happy to pay-which was a joke considering there was nobody sat in any of the areas throughout-the hotel must be working at a loss! The waitresses were also so serious-none smiled and extremely un-courteous. Following this we found a fantastic pub round the corner called ‘friend at hand’ which had a fantastic atmosphere very Christmassy great music and thank god set a great conclusion to our evening-having travelled hours to get to hotel as many of us are not from london we’d planned to meet friends as a Christmas gathering. I seriously do not rate this experience at all. Not even worth one star. As someone who attends 7 star hotels I was treated abominably ...

Well what can I say this my second visit to the Montague and it was just as perfect as the first.I wanted to take my mother here for Mother’s day and although they were full to capacity they found the room for us. Unfortunately my mother was not well on Mother’s day so had to cancel on the day with no problem from the hotel only wishing that my mother gets better soon which was nice of them. I then went back this Sunday when my mother was feeling better in which they gave us a choice of where to sit and still presented my mother with a beautiful belated mother’s day presentation plate. The food as always was AMAZING. It was so fresh and the choice of sandwiches was as ever delightful especially their almond crusted coronation chicken. If we needed a refill of anything this was no problem to them nor was bringing out fresh hot scones when ours had gone cold from talking so much they even had a variety of scones to choose from. Both Luke, Adel, Robert the cocktail man plus another lovely waiter that refilled our teapots where all fantastic as ever and a joy to be around nothing was too much trouble for them even when my mother insisted on turning the temperature of the room up and down about 10 times lol  what I liked the most is that we arrived at 3.30 and did not leave till nearly 7pm! This was due to being so comfortable and talking for so long without the feeling of being rushed out of the hotel even when they were getting busier with customers coming in to the room especially the lovely American customers we were listening too who were all in awe of the beautiful rooms they were sitting in and the waiters advising them on how to eat scones the British way depending on what part of Briton you were from which they all found very intriguing. For the price we paid I could not fault them on anything and taking in to consideration my mother is very difficult to please plus she seems to like to find something to moan about she said there was nothing she could fault on either what a winner ay. If you’re looking for a relaxing afternoon tea where you can sit and talk for hours and I mean hours then this is the place by the time I left I could not even move I was that full and had to force the remaining cakes down me just so we could start to leave or we would have been there quite happily till 9pm, they would be happy to present you with a box if you want to take things home. I cannot recommend them enough and they will always be my go to hotel for Afternoon tea. Please ask for either Luke or Adel when making a reservation as they will go out of their way to make it a beautiful day for you.

We'd booked this in advance and quite looked forward to having afternoon tea here. With the hotel being highly rated we thought the food would match. But no. Sadly we were very disappointed. The sandwiches were uninspired, and the cakes were stale. Our tea was refreshed immediately after the first pot was served before we had even finished one cup - which seemed completely pointless. When we asked for more jam for the scones this arrived after we had finished eating. Bearing in mind that we were one of only three tables occupied the service was very poor. Combined with disappointing food this is not somewhere I would ever want to go back to.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

I arrived a few minutes late for my booking and one of the four or five people at reception took me promptly to my table. General enquiries were made after my health and the progress of my day.A requested glass of tap water was brought immediately to my table, ice and lemon offered and declined.I was left a menu and a box of teas in glass jars to peruse. I knew what I wanted, having studied the menu before booking, so ordered promptly - Darjeeling. My pot of hot water soon arrived with some tea timers and the leaves plunged in to the water (the tea is in a cage that can be dropped in to the water then removed when required resulting in, potentially, a perfect brew). The Montague use Twinings tea and I really like their Darjeeling. A second pot of hot water was also delivered to my table and I never managed to work out what that was for. As the tea is perfectly brewed it doesn't need to be watered down but the pot of water is too cold to be useful for a second brew. Also, when a top up is requested staff take away this second pot and fill it with hot water, the pot with the leaves stays on the table. This struck me as somewhat odd as Darjeeling is generally brewed with water just off the boil and this decanting of hot water leaves it just barely hot enough. Milk is offered and declined. My food arrives. The waiter then tells me what is in the sandwiches, points out the scones and tells me about the "best bit", the cakes. She then suggests the order I should eat my meal in - sandwiches, scones then cakes although, she adds, I'm free to enjoy my meal any way I please. I'm aghast. I'm literate so have read the menu and I know what's in the sandwiches. And I don’t care for someone else's opinion of the best bit of my meal. But to be given a suggested eating order… patronising or what? The food is good. The sandwiches are tasty and well-filled. The scones are a little small but good and the cream plentiful. It would have been handy to have a spoon for the jam.The staff are "attentive". Irritatingly so. So irritating, in fact, that I ask one of the staff to request that his colleagues stop disturbing me and that, should I require service, I will summon someone. I tend to dine alone and I like to relax and savour my meal. Having someone enquire every six minutes or so if I required anything else ruined the experience for me."Can I get you anything else, sir?" "I'm fine, thank you." "More sandwiches, or another scone?" "I'm FINE, THANK YOU!"The cakes were excellent and, I'm pleased to report, not too sweet. There was a peach macaroon (stunningly good), a choux with vanilla custard (made with vanilla pod), a ginger cake, a meringue with gooey chocolate, a strawberry tart and a gorgeous Bakewell. I can't remember what the other cake was.Although offered more food I was keen to leave as being patronised and pestered did nothing to add to my experience.I asked for my bill and the service charge was removed. This was a nice touch but I paid it anyway.I was able to give immediate feedback to one of the staff. I pointed out that I found it extremely patronising to have my meal described to me and given a suggested eating order. He saw my point but explained to me that the Montague has four star accreditation with The Tea Guild that they're keen to maintain and one of the requirements is that they have to explain what is brought to the table and prompt guests on how it might be best enjoyed. I thought this was a bit incredulous so I looked it up at home. And there it is, The Tea Guild criteria notes, under Efficiency of Service, "Staff should inform guests who are ordering a full afternoon tea menu precisely what the menu comprises of, the varieties and quantities of food included and the order in which the afternoon tea will be served. This is particularly important in hotels and larger tea rooms where guests, may be foreign and/or unfamiliar with the afternoon tea concept and unsure of the order of service and the order in which it should be eaten" I also mention that I found continual staff intrusion irritating. Again, The Tea Guild, "Staff should return to table regularly to check customers’ requirements and to ensure that everything is satisfactory. For example, is more tea, hot water or milk required?" So, I feel sorry for the Montague and their staff. They clearly want to maintain the highest standards yet they're straight-jacketed in to following the criteria of an organisation that seems to have no grasp of the concept of customer service.

Who knew there was an outdoor ski lodge just behind the British Museum?? The Montague had done a fantastic job of recreating a covered bar and informal dining area in their patio area and it was great fun! The menu set up was different to what was described on TT - there was no set price anything which made it more expensive than expected but also more flexible as two of our group ended up not drinking. The two choices of fondue were delicious and the tasting platter looked amazing. Service was really friendlyalthough there were times when the bar was unattended so we had to wait for more drinks etc but that was minor as the staff had really got into the spirit and made it a really great experience. We had afternoon tea here early on in our stay and we had an excellent time. Our server told us that she was new, so if we had any questions that she may have to go off to find the answers, but I found her to be quite capable. The room was gorgeous, even if the seating was a little tight. It wasn't busy when we got there -- I think there were only three other tables occupied. That made the experience seem very relaxed and indulgent. I'm not usually a tea drinker, but I thought mine was great. I always feel like my tea tastes like flavored hot water and our server was able to educate me on how to get the best taste out of the tea. I thought it tasted pretty good, so I think she knew what she was talking about. I would definitely return.

As my friend is very into her different teas, she thought this was wonderful. I had the gluten free tea and it looked almost as tasty as the normal one.

First of all, the tea room is actually a very small room with maximum capacity of 12 persons in a space no bigger than 50sq2. We were a party of 4 and felt a bit confined in a corner of the room, sitting in close proximity to other patrons – so close that we could hear one another’s conversations clearly.Next, although there were at least 10 varieties of tea available for choosing, the quality of tea leaves was not good. They look old and did not have as strong flavors as I had expected. The scone menu which we had opted for was so pathetic that when it was served, I thought it was a joke to pay over GBP 15 for 4 tiny scones (no bigger than my palm). The rest of the pastries on the traditional tea menu was mediocre at best and not worth the calories spent. (Note to self: Stop having afternoon teas – they are so not worth it).Service was very good despite the poor food. It was prompt and friendly.

We thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon tea here in a lovely conservatory. We had a very attentive and friendly waiter who looked after us brilliantly. We really appreciated that we were not rushed and that we were able to order several different tea infusions and an extra plate of sandwiches for no extra cost. This really impressed us. Everything was very tasty, well presented and high quality.Decor not totally to our taste but it was excellent quality and very comfortable.

We had afternoon tea booked for my sisters birthday and we were not disappointed. The staff were lovely and attentive nothing was too much trouble especially Adele who was very attentive. we had a lovely table in the conservatory which was light and airy. We got choose from a selection of teas including some different ones. We had champagne included in the package so had this first then followed it with endless amounts of sandwiches, scones and lovely mini cakes you only had to say and you got more scones and sandwiches. The service was fantastic which made the experience even better. A lovely plate was present to my sister as it was her birthday which was a lovely added extra.

Visited this restaurant for a wonderful birthday lunch in a private room. Delicious food, especially the lamb, one of the best pieces of lamb I have ever eaten. The service was very friendly, unobtrusive and extremely efficient. I thought the whole occasion was beautifully done by the hotel and highly enjoyable. Highly recommended!

From the moment we walked through the front doors, we were greeted warmly and treated like we were special. We had tea one afternoon in the conservatory and had very personal attention. My companion is gluten-intolerant and they had special treats set up especially for her. There were a couple of things on her tray that I wanted to eat and mine was filled with enough tasty treats as it was! We had a glass of champagne before we had our choice of several teas. I loved the teapot and the sand timers that allowed us to each take our tea as weakly or strongly as we liked. I love how the sunlight comes through to this room, even on a cloudy day... We had very comfortable seating and excellent service. The conservatory itself is adorable and well-lit and comfortable. We were greeted and inquired after by more than one person and always with a smile.

Afternoon tea at the Montague proved to be both an education and a treat. The conservatory itself, with its large glass windows and potted plants, provides a very pleasant and relaxing atmosphere. The servers were very cordial and proud of the traditional tea service at the Montague. We were a party of five and shown a selection of teas, each of which were explained to us as we sniffed the aromas. Our teas arrived with individual timers, accompanied by a tiered platter of delicious sandwiches and pastries. We were hungry and very appreciative when an identical second tiered platter arrived at no extra charge. All in all the experience was very worthwhile, with perhaps the friendliest staff and best service we experienced in England.

Having checked out several afternoon tea options in London, I opted for The Montague, as I wanted somewhere a little bit 'different' to propose to my girlfriend. The hotel has a really nice decor, and the conservatory is very cosy and comfortable. The staff were very helpful and accomodating to my for the afternoon, and they put in a lot of effort to make it a special event and moment for us. The afternoon tea itself is also very well done and presented, and the food is delicious. In the end, my girlfriend said Yes, and the entire afternoon had been a fantastic, romantic, and memorable experience. Another big thank you to the staff at the Montague!

As first time visitors to Great Britain we wanted to experience traditional English food and customs. We were thrilled with our afternoon tea at the Montague Hotel. The hotel is beautiful and elegant with the charm of an older well maintained building. The staff was all welcoming, friendly, and helpful. While I don't drink tea my mother and sisters were pleased with their selections. The finger sandwiches were good, the sweet selections were beautiful and tasty, and the scones were amazing. We thoroughly enjoyed our traditional afternoon tea at the Montague!

The Montague hotel is a perfect setting for a splendid tea. The staff are friendly and welcoming. Tea was delicious, several choices and I just loved the timers. Sandwiches were good but the cakes were scrumptious and you get to take home anything you don't eat! My sister had a gluten free tea and she says that their gluten free scones are fantastic...better than Savoy! The champagne was a nice touch and went well with the strawberries. Next time in London treat yourself.

A coupIe of weeks ago i treated my friend with Afternoon Tea at the Montague on the Gardens Hotel. As soon as we arrived we were greeted by very welcoming staff who showed us to our table. Every single staff member was very friendly, always with a smile on their face and very attentive.Choosing your tea already is exciting as you get the chance to smell every single tea. The food was delicious.Tasty sandwiches, heavenly scones and a lovely mixture of different pastries. I'm pretty sure you will love it as much as we did. In only one sentence i would say, that everybody who gets the chance, should try this amazing experience we had at the Montague. I strongly recommend this Hotel to anyone who loves a nice treat for themselves or with family and friends.

I usually have afternoon tea at The Chesterfield Hotel or Harrods. I have visited The Montague before with other people and would have rated those visits much higher but this time I have only rated the experience as a 3/10.Positive aspects were:- The décor (always beautiful) – as good as - Staff were eager to be pleasant and helpful.- We did not feel rushed.- Children were made welcome.- Cleanliness.Negative aspects were:- Four glasses of champagne were ordered but only two were delivered. When I tried to ask about this, on both occasions the waitress thought we were asking about the timing of delivering the tea (after drinking the champagne).- A large television was on in the conservatory. I understand that would be good for some (especially as the Olympics were on) but an alternative choice could have been offered to take tea somewhere without a television.- I emailed ahead to ask for Afternoon Tea to be taken on the garden if possible. On arrival I was told that this was not possible. - It was irritating that two other ladies who arrived and sat in the conservatory then asked to be moved to the garden terrace and were moved there (because of the noise from the television).- When I asked for some more Coronation Chicken sandwiches then I was told that we had already received our allocation of sandwiches. I explained that I was entirely happy to pay for more sandwiches but my wife stopped me from actually ordering them as she is shy and gets embarrassed if we draw attention to ourselves.- Sadly, we were then kindly given more sandwiches but as we had already started on the scones and cakes, then we did not want them. My wife hates offending anyone and so she ate three of the four quarters in order to be polite even though she did not actually want any of them.`I accept that some of the negative aspects were exacerbated because my family do not always speak plainly because they want to be polite and never want to make a scene or complain… but part of the problem was with staff not fully understanding English and in the systems and policies in place. For example, it might have been better (and more accurate) to say that the extra sandwiches would have to incur a charge rather than telling us we had received all the sandwiches that we were allowed, and it might be better to offer a place without a television etc.

Afternoon Tea in The Conservatory at the Montague was a welcome refreshment after a long-haul flight from the Antipodes. We didn't do it justice, though as we were just that bit too tired. Do go there - but make sure you take a good appetite with you as they keep refreshing the plates with sandwiches, scones and delicious little cakes and tartlets.

Quite simply a ridiculous price for a very poor quality pork pie. It was overcooked and dry. The drink prices are the a real punishment. £123 each for pie, mash and a shared dessert, plus two drinks.

Nice food, great coffee. Sadly the cafe sitting area had some heavy musty smell. As if something in the floors is slowly rotting.
