The Conquering Hero Pub in Croydon

This pub had been recommended to me for Sunday lunch. Sadly, it was not a good recommendation or experience. Whilst the bar, drink sleection, and staff were OK, the whole experience was let down by dire kitchen service. Admittedly we were warned that there was a delay with service, but two hours from odering to being served is totally unacceptable and we were just getting up from our table to leave when the food finally arrived. I wish now that we had left it. There was absolutley no excuse for the delay as the pub was not exactly busy, and the time taken was certainly not devoted to preparing excellent food. The meal was only luke warm and the only saving grace was the hot gravy. The vegetables wre overcooked and varying shades of grey. All in all it was very disappointing and we will certainly not be returning.

Agree with the comment about surly staff, except my experience was with a barman. He seemed annoyed to have to explain what wines were available.

Came for a drink but after seeing the food decided to stay can honestly say the food here is amazing, not quite sure about the previous comments regarding the staff but I couldn’t have found them nicer or more approachable. Will 100% be back and I already know what my next meal of choice will be would highly recommend coming here do not be put off by the exterior👍🏼

Good to come in with mates on a damp January night and find this pub is still doing so well with a great feel and good beers/ales. A bit sad to be told that the much loved and famous, resident pet pig Frances Bacon who, on our previous visit was wandering among the patrons has very recently passed on peacefully of old age. Difficult to trump that for an attraction and curiosity but we will certainly still be dropping in for a couple or more when in the area.

A delightful traditional 'proper' pub ruined by the presence of a surly barmaid. Surely it’s easier to offer a pleasant greeting to a customer rather than a grumpy approach ? Couldn’t see the point of giving this place my business, so left after one pint.

Joined in the live music session. Lovely welcome, very good music and friendly place. Did not meet Francis this time, but hope to come again. Nice beer.

Went for food, service absolutely dismal. No excuse from management or kitchen. I recommend not to eat here

Great pub!! The food is delicious, the staff are friendly, the tables are clean, and the garden is nice and spacious! Theres even a pot bellied pig, Francis bacon! And occasionally there is live music The wifi could be better though! Oh and I also saw my teachers there, but thats to no fault of the pub 😂

Well kept ales, good service, pleasant crowd. Good for drinking, eating and watching the football. Interesting feature which got the place approving national news coverage was and is the presence of a pet resident Vietnamese pot-belly micro pig called Francis Bacon. Owned by the landlords and well behaved.

Okay, I admit it I am an idiot. Foy years friends have been telling me how great the "conq" was. Did I listen?, no. finally the penny dropped a few months ago and I went with the wife. staff are friendly, the service is unrushed and the food is cooked to perfection. The price are mid-range, but this is made up for by the portion sizes. Quality is not compromised by quantity though. this is now a once a week affair, when friends come to visit we take them their and they are equally impressed impressed. If I could give it seven stars I would. See you again soon and thank you to the staff.

I love this pub the food is amazing all fresh home cooked grub which tastes delicious very generous portions and reasonably priced . The staff are friendly and dogs are welcome too

Yet another great evening at our local. Hannah and Justina are soooo hardworking and combine that with utter professionalism. Friendly, hardworking and always on top of our orders. Tonight, we had the pleasure of watching the Eng vs Ukraine match. Madly busy, yet our orders were delivered quickly and with a smile. Our table is booked for the Euros semi finals.

We booked The Conquering Hero for refreshments after a funeral. It was the perfect choice. There is a large garden, which ensured that we could observe social distancing; the pub provided buffet food, served individually; there were flowers on the tables; music of our choice was played; and the staff were friendly and sensitive to the occasion. Thoroughly recommended and very reasonable prices.

This is our local pub. Have been numerous time for food and for quiz night. They have an excellent selection for seafood!!! Bucket of boat trash is to die for! Staff very friendly. Never had a bad experience here. Strongly recommend the visit.

Business Christmas celeb held at local hostelry - n they did us proud!! Great finger food provided, attentive bar staff n no hassling at all. Good time had by all, VMTs.

We live near by and really like to visit this pub couple of times a month. The owners and staff are very friendly. A good local to catch up with people. Menu has lots of choices and the food is nice
