Didn't have food, but did have a Guinness, unfortunately not many options of dark/ruby ales. Nice beer garden, and they do have BBQ, which starts from 1730 hours.

Craft beer is good - landlord is great and very friendly guy.

Nice dog friendly pub, myself and friends enjoyed a few pints whilst my Cookie had some fresh biscuits and a bowl of water. Perfect sunny afternoon.

Good beer choices, nice staff, great outdoor area with loads of space and private heated booths.

When I visited the Dog & Bull I loved its spacious beer garden with private booths and a retractable roof, making it a perfect summer retreat. I've added it to my barguide.london site too!

Another good beer guide pub in Croydon. I'm a bit disappointed that no Youngs Special was on. Barma. Said not been kn fir ages, even though there blackboard said its always on.... The Guinness, however was excellent, one of best ive drank in England for years but Ireland prices @£6.10 a pint..... But with two ales and no special, I can't see it keeping its place in the guide...

People usually don't rate these places, so I'll do 😁 We all like a pint on a terrace on a summer day (or on a rainy winter one). This place is a go-to if you like an authentic English pub experience around the food market. Is open for everyone as over time I have seen children (with parents), pets, the oldies and the younger people. It is a mix, and I like it. The only downside that could be looked after is cleaningness - on some areas of the pub/ terrace, it can be felt a strong smell of wee. Is the location great? Well, is Croydon-people have mixed feelings about it. Been here multiple times & will probably return as long I will be a local-ish.

Great beer garden. Can't comment on food, as we have never ate here. I wish they'd get some different wines, but the house wine was OK.

Best beer garden in Croydon day or night, Youngs owned so beer range limited but never had a bad pint.

The garden is very nice, but has a Claustrophobic feeling after sometime, there was also a high pitched loud noise that went on for 15+ minutes. On the whole I'd say its quite an over priced boozer.

We didnt eat here but food looked good. Sat out in the garden with Family and Friends. Good service and friendly Staff

I remember the dog and bull in the 90s. It is different yet the same. Locals tend to be friendly. If you are looking for a real traditional English pub, this is it. Oldest pub in Croydon and still one of my favorites. Don't know if they still have one man bands and pearly kings and queens, but still a nice place for a pint.

Been going here for years. It's a hidden gem as there are not that many pub gardens in Central Croydon. From the front you'd expect this to be a quaint lil pub but the back garden is massive and very inviting when the weather is nice. A little pricey on drinks but hey ho!

Good atmosphere and patio. Inside is smaller but very nice too. Busy place so service was a bit slower. Only had drinks and would recommend visiting.

Wonderful old pub in downtown Croydon. The staff were lovely and very helpful. A smallish bar with a setting area off to the side and another small room behind the bar. Out the back is a sizeable well furnished beer garden with booths around two sides and a bbq place that I'm told provides great food Wednesday to Sunday. The Guinness was excellent as was the Young's Original.

Always a great evening drinking in the garden at The Dig & Bull. We’ve been using since before covid and it’s always a pleasure to sit in the lovely garden. Always a good post work crowd in there and a good atmosphere.

What a lovely traditional looking pub inside, and wonderful and spacious beer garden, and food too. Will definitely go there again 100%, although the only problem is the price of alcohol, which I was not happy with but such is life sadly.

Heart of Croydon market, discover the garden at the back. Oasis in the middle of the metropolis. Relive the area's history with the photographs on the walls while supping a fine pint. As Thomas Wolfe (not Tom) has it 'You can't go home again'. Sadly this is no longer a Young's establishment so goodbye to Ram and Spec. Goodbye to this Croydon institution. Update; Anniversary trip and surprise Spec and unfortunately no Ram. At £5.50 a luxury pint and they don't take Amex. No longer a working class boozer but it is hot outside.

Our favourite pub in Croydon. Being local, it’s wonderful to have this place on our doorstep to pop into throughout the year, but especially during the summer with their fantastic beer garden. It’s a huge sun trap and we’ve spent many a happy summer’s evening there. With it being on Surrey Street, you have the best that Croydon had to offer - the hustle and bustle of the market dating back to the 1600’s and the Dog and Bull dating back to a similar era. The food is brilliant too, as are the people who work there who will always make you feel very welcome. Thanks guys!

Nice pub, but very expensive, pint of Lager £7 a pint and Vodka and orange £12.Better of taking a short walk to The George Wetherspoons.

Lovely garden for the summer but with a pint being priced at over £7, I won’t be rushing back. Central London is cheaper.

Good pub, lots of character and decent beer but avoid the bbq. The burgers were the most expensive burgers I've bought in all of london and one of the most disappointing. Tasted like they were straight out of a frozen packet. I'd recommend going just for a drink.

Brilliant 'olde worlde' pub with friendly, knowledgeable staff & great surroundings. Such a relaxing place full of interesting memorabilia and a really nice feel to it, could've stayed all night.....this is how pubs should be !! Will definitely return when next in Croydon. Many thanks

Lovely friendly atmosphere. The Diet Coke on draft tasted like proper Diet Coke - not watered down at all. Which IMO is a sign of a really good pub!

Nice pub to have a drink. Food is nothing to rave about This is a lovely drinking pub but eat elsewhere. Service hit and miss. Bar service good. Cleaning tables with a grudge. Sat at n table with the previous punters dirty dishes for two hours - staff begrudgingly took it away.

It's now dawning on me that I hit this place at a bad time: 3:50pm on a winter Sunday afternoon. I wasn't sure what to expect, given its location in the downbeat Surrey Street, but I guess it thinks it's a bit upmarket. They did have a couple of proper ales and the gents was spotless and everything worked, which I find important in a place serving food and drink. But the food was too expensive and very average. £16 for an overcooked cheeseburger and a handful of brown chips with a sliver of gherkin and lettuce. Friendly staff and reasonable decor inside. I'll try again in the summer when the garden's open and get the food earlier in the day.

spent an evening on the Friday with family great atmosphere friendly also a family afternoon on the Saturday again friendly bar staff. the food we ordered as a snack was the samosas under cooked and dry mind you if you have had a few lagers etc still went done well my final comment would be the price its very expensive my daughter paid 12 pounds for a large glass of wine maybe thats the cost and i am out of touch with Croydon prices or is it a pub that charges that because of its history.

I wouldn't go here for food, very slow. The portions were very small. Really not a good experience

While Croydon descends into chaos the Dog & Bull remains a beautiful little oasis of calm, tucked away behind the market stalls of the bustle & noise of the 800 year old Surrey St Market. From the inside, the stained glass windows give a tranquillity to the simple act of enjoying a pint of Youngs. And the well appointed beer garden at the back (with its own bar) is a great place to continue drinking in the summer. The food is now both a burger and Indian menu, though the Indian is either too fiery or too bland and far from restaurant standard.

Rude barman last night. He wouldn't serve me as i was apparently standing in the wrong place at the bar (what a pathetic jobsworth). I've been going there for the last 20 years, but that's the last time they will have my custom.

Cool Spot. We almost had a hard time understanding the strong English accent of the bartenders. But we managed to work out the misunderstanding since we were the foreigners and everyone speaks credit card payment.

Decent pub with some draft beers (the mango one is my favourite). I was there when Crystal Palace were playing Arsenal. The locals and the fans were in good spirits, the garden was a touch especially as it was a sunny day. The pub itself has classic/original character/decor but the spacious garden was modernised. The bar staff were decent overall but I always got served by the grumpiest one 😆 I would DEFINITELY go back there especially if the weather is good 👌🏼

Bit of a hidden gem this pub. Looks unassuming but hidden in the back is a gorgeous beer garden. Really good for hanging out in the summer months with friends. Only reason it's 4 stars is because I've been here twice in a week for food and both times there's been issues with the kitchen so had to eat elsewhere.

My go to pub in the summer in Croydon. One of the only pubs where you can sit in the sun on a nice summers afternoon. Reasonable prices and food is surprisingly good. If there's a big sport event on, make sure you book a table!

Nice pub. Inside and out. Very nice beer garden in the back. Little gem considering its Croydon. Plenty of room. Food looks decent though I didn't try it. The beer is expensive though and considering its a standard pub not a craft bar or anything it's expensive. Neck oil 7.10. That really is steep. I didn't see prices of others but assume they're not much cheaper. This wasn't a special beer either this is just pm tap like normal. Really think you should reduce the prices a bit. Over 7£ for a beer now seems the norm in Central London but this is zone 5...

22 years living in Croydon , first time visited didn't realise it had a hidden beer garden at the back, always thought it was just a small pub. Good atmosphere nice selection of ipa's. Will be visiting again

Great pub with friendly staff. Has a wonderful back garden and they are dog friendly. Sorry to see they had top serving Harvey's but otherwise was an awesome experience and they have plenty of other great beers on tap.

The Dog & Bull is a great pub. An oasis in the hustle bustle of Surrey street market. The garden has a bar and booth seating. And good food also. An afternoon or evening in the Dog is thoroughly recommended. Although they should cap the beer at six quid 🍒🙂🍒

Nice place here, they have a good outside garden and very clean toilets. Also able to order from the table using the barcode like wetherspoons. But the drinks I think are expensive! It was £9.25 for a double vodka drink.

We were revisiting our old home which was 66yrars ago. It was so nice to see the bar was the same. Beer and wine was excellent. The service was great very friendly and went out of the way to make us feel welcome. Five of us had a evening meal (which of course in our day was non existent) we all enjoyed our main courses the apple crumble was to die for. It was nice to see the snug was still there and the extension into the Cheese House. Also the outside with heated Boothe's and fleeces provided. The garden area we enjoyed in the afternoon with a vodka tonic, cider and chilled larger top. The toilet facilities was very modern ( that was part of our bathroom!!) In our time the kitchen was down below the bar, which now was a good size up stairs. We were all so pleased to see the Old Dog and Bull flourishing may it continue for many years. Well worth a visit in the old town. Thank you to the staff for making our return so memorable.
