Beef pie was heavenly. Food overall top tier. Beer was cold and a beer, so no complaints there!! Will come back if I'm in this part of the world again!!!

The waitress asked me if I had finished my food about four times, and I’m pretty sure she sounded like she was trying to say, "Come on, finish it." When I asked for the bill, she said, "Why don’t you just come up to the bar? I’ll give it to you there." (she did not tell this to other tables).I felt really uncomfortable.Very very disapointed.

Rude, and no interest in making any form of dietary accommodation - despite doing so multiple times in the past. Had a very bad experience with a member of staff and complained to the manager via email and got a half arsed short response. Wont be back

We visited and it seemed very disorganised as bar staff were waiting tables as well serving behind the bar. Table Service was extremely slow even though there were only a few tables occupied when we were there in the restaurant part. We had to wait 40 mins waiting for someone to take our menu order and in the end we had to ask if someone would take our order. We only had 3 main dishes and drink. They were more occupied cleaning tables. The food did come quicker after that and it was good. But the slow service has put us off so we won't be returning.

We came across this absolute diamond of a pub while in Edinburgh for a show at the playhouse. The staff including Finn were attentive, friendly and made us most welcome. The drinks are reasonably priced and the food was outstanding. Service with a smile and we were well looked after. Get yourself along to this cosy pub , you are in for a treat

Incredible atmosphere, a step back in time. We ate very well there and we discovered the famous Scottish haggis.

Met a friend for lunch. I’m not gluten tolerant & was disappointed to find the food is bought in & not made on the premises. Cullen Skink is usually safe if homemade, not here. The nachos, which I could have were pathetic. They were cold & squeasy cheese with a sprinkle of packet grated cheddar. I could have a steak, I don’t eat red meat & I wasn’t convinced about the salmon. My friends calamari was burnt. I didn’t feel it was worth the money. Definitely won’t b back. The place was cold, dark & no welcome. I felt I was a burden/

August 2023. We literally found our local 3 doors down from the Ibis Hotel. We enjoyed dinner 3 nights in a row and again on our last night in Edinburgh when we returned from our 5 day Highland Tour. Restaurant was very comfortable and interesting, the food was tasty and the beer was great! The staff was friendly and accommodating. We cannot wait to visit again!

Staff need to communicate, we were told by a male that we couldn't sit in the dining area if we wasn't eating, I said I was going to have a bar snack, he said we can order bar snacks from other areas ,we sat at a table near the bar which had a bar snack menu on, I went to the bar to order nachos and was asked where I was sitting, I told the girl where and she abruptly told me that I couldn't have food at the table where we was sitting, but the guy earlier said we could have bar snacks, after travelling to Edinburgh for new year we were very disappointed and shocked at the way she said it, , staff need to cheer up and communicate more,

The pub is within eyeshot of where Conan Doyle was born. There’s plenty of information and pictures about the famous author adorning the walls. We liked the Christmassy feel and the mulled cider.

Food is rather expensive but the brisket burger is worth it

Booked months ago for Christmas Day dinner and omg it was fabulous! Massive portions and amazing flavours, I had pate, Christmas dinner and cheese and biscuits then coffee and nice pie and I literally can’t move 😂 The staff were fantastic and made us feel soo special. Thank you for a fab Christmas dinner

The service was quite well, food was okey, definitely could recommend trying the christmas toffee puding, as it was the star of our order.

Friendly and helpful staff. Bookings are highly recommended but the staff are friendly, efficient and very helpful to find a place if at all possible in such a popular and heavily booked pub. We stayed a few doors down and ended up going most evenings of our stay. Value for money and many menu items to work through. Very atmospheric decor, lovely quaint, original pub. Excellent food.

We loved having a drink here. Great vibe and lovely decoration. We did not have food, only drinks and very happy with it.

It was an original place. The quality of food met my expectations, but price was high.

Excellent service and the food was delicious. Our server Katie went above and beyond. Love the atmosphere there. A bonus is that they serve Guiness Zero. Will definitely go back when I return to Edinburgh!

An old style place, open only from lunch to late, offering a selection of Scottish food. And some ambiance... great experience!

Overpriced; absolutely NO reason ANYONE should be paying £6.30 for a SINGLE vodka and mixer. Staff are downright rude, there isn't a clear menu with prices for drinks. Atmosphere is okay, but overall it's probably one of the worst pubs I've been to in Edinburgh

Went for post theatre drinks on a Saturday so expected it to be busy and it was. In future I would book a table as we couldn't get a seat so only had 2 drinks then moved on

Classic pub, tasty small plates. Unfortunately there was no draft beer when we were there. Happy to be fully booked, reservation is especially helpful for more than two people.

It seems that the birthplace of Conan Doyle, a novelist and doctor, was near this pub. This is an irresistible pub for Conan Doyle fans. I had beer during the day, and it was great. Recommended as it has a great atmosphere!

We had a long, long day of travelling and walking while sightseeing on our first day in Scotland. We were exhausted and just wanted something authentic but quick that was near our hotel. We walked just down the block to the Conan Doyle hoping to get something that was “authentic Scottish“ food. Even though we are not drinkers, we know some of the best Scottish food is found in pubs so we thought we’d give it a try. We were not disappointed at all. We had three amazing dishes, including one starter and every single one was great. We started off with.Cullen Skink, which, for those of you who don’t know is basically a fish chowder, and it pretty much had the flavour of clam chowder. Which is great because I love clam chowder! We then went with the two mains - Stovies and slow pulled beef Rib, Shin and Pulled Brisket pie, all three were great, but the brisket pie was “amazing“! Now my belly hurts, but it’s a good pain. As I said, we’re not drinkers so we didn’t. We can’t review what the drinks were like, but it was a bustling place and the food was absolutely fantastic. Also, sidenote, the staff are really nice and friendly as well. We hope to go back another day and at least try the sticky toffee pudding as we were too full to even consider it.

Enjoyed stopping here after a busy day of exploring Edinburgh including hiking up to Arthur's Seat.

Traditional Scottish pub, really excellent typical food (said by an Italian 😉!!), the staff are really nice and attentive (it's not always so obvious in Scotland!!!) Prices are medium high as is usual in these latitudes... But at least for one evening you should have the experience of feeling a little Scottish....

Loud noisy pub. Reservations a must. Food was good.

I always go for Sausage (pork+haggis) & Mash, always really good. Parents first time and both loved the Steak Pie. Price per person is including drink.

The staff member with the ginger ponytail had a generally bad attitude. He was blaring his preferred music choice when there was essentially an older, tourist clientele in the pub. Not the atmosphere I'm sure that they were hoping for in this "classic" pub. More like rock and grunge music!! Not impressed at all!! He seemed like he was also "jacked up a bit" if you get my drift.....

Don’t come here! The host is SUPER RUDE and on a power trip. She wouldn’t seat anybody even though there were places available and she was very rude to all the other customers too. This much attitude for such a small task of a job, don’t give her the joy of eating at this restaurant. She is ruining the business for the owner of this restaurant. Tip to boss: Hire better staff, your workers are rude and entitled. The food looks like crap anyway.

Sherlockians should check this place out for the memorabilia, but skip the food, which was very poor the 2 times I ate here in the past year. Most recently, the fish pie was a gloppy, flavorless mess and a steak ordered medium was like shoe leather.

Io e mia moglie abbiamo mangiato in questo pub molto caratteristico sia a pranzo che a cena. Ottimo l'haggis e le torte con dentro la carne (le "pie", che qui fanno in vari modi). Da provare assolutamente. I ragazzi (Katy e Fin) sono gentili e accoglienti e sanno consigliare i clienti. Della birra e del wiskey niente da dire: siamo a Edimburgo! Il pub è poco distante dalla Royal Mile e questo lo rende più tranquillo. Consigliato assolutamente.

Fairly priced fish&chips with great drinks and friendly service! We had a fun and cosy evening. Good choice when visiting the Scottish capital!

My 'salted caramel torte' turned out to he salted caramel cheesecake. This was fine, I love cheesecake. Except it was frozen solid like an ice cream. The chicken and mushroom pie was lovely though, the mash great and the gravy very good too.

Great little pub just beside the omni centre with great staff but if I had one complaint their was one bartender who was slightly unprofessional wearing an ac/dc top

Wonderful meal! Locally brewed pale ale and then Stovies with grilled root vegetables and bread, baked Mac and cheese with flatbread and Cranachen (spelling?) finished off a perfectly cooked meal. The service was friendly and amazing from start to finish! Don’t miss this establishment!

Cracking boozer, and a great pint of T. If i was forced to give a criticism to this great pub it would be the slightly unprofessional AC/DC tee the Ozzy bartender was wearing.

Always very pleased to be at The Conan Doyle: the service was impeccable and the food 5 stars worth. Comments from my nephew (9 years old): “I wish I could eat like this everyday!” and “I wish the chef could come and cook for us at the school’s canteen”. :) Overall, I have been very pleased and I had a wonderful experience. I am still happy to recommend the place for food and drinks.

Katy and Fin were kind and gave us good recommendations for both food and drinks. Haggis and meat pies are a must try. And please remember that haggis should be eaten while drinking whiskey and not beer!

Popped in for a drink and stayed for food. Staff very friendly and polite, offering water for our dogs and advising us on menu (I have allergies). Food was good and portion size huge. Shout out to the tall guy (barman) who was very knowledgeable about their whiskey stock Will definitely be back again.

I had dinner at the pub this evening Good and well prepared dishes Typical pleasant environment. I appreciated the library that evokes mysterious and murderous mists of the master Conan Doyle I waited half an hour during rush hour on a Sunday evening and had to eat on the stool because it was full There was a free table but it wasn't clean but they moved me instead of cleaning it However I recommend it I appreciated the music

Very cool pub located in a great spot. The food was incredible and the portions were generous. Highly recommend the steak and ale pie (it was to die for!) and my husband loved his burger. We both thoroughly enjoyed our sticky toffee pudding. Would definitely come again!!

I went there because it has the distinction of being Conan Doyle's birthplace, but the food is average and it's a place you can enjoy in moderation after seeing Calton Hill.

Staff are brilliant and friendly and drinks reasonably priced but for me the food is not so good . I had haddock and chips which was not very nice. Limp greasy batter and hard chips and a £6 service charge which is beyond a joke . I wouldn't recommend this place for food but okay if you are just having a drink .

Very nice if we're talking about pubs in general, a bit disappointing personally if we see it as Arthur Conan Doyle's pub. There are few things about his works and almost nothing about Sherlock Holmes (as it was written in the description) other than his 4 novels on a shelf.

Huggies is better than expected

If you want to try Fish & Chips and traditional meat pie, this is your place. Local food that you will find in every pub in Scotland, but done well. One of the two pies we ordered was low temperature rib cake, and the bone fell off on its own. The fish was not excessively oily, and the rest was great. The waitress was very friendly, she recommended local beers and despite being able to communicate in English, they made sure you understood them. Advisable.

The staff was very friendly and since I was alone they made me feel right at home. The food was delicious, hot and made to order very quickly. I ate and the staff encouraged me to sit, relax and enjoy myself. I ordered two pints and soaked up the atmosphere. It was a lovely night out for a solo traveller.

Beautiful old Edinburgh pub, didn't try the food but the menu looks great. Drinks were good too, ordered a cocktail and was pleasantly surprised.

Most drinks we tried to order off the bar menu we were given were not in stock or they did not have anymore.

We found this lovely place, a typical Scottish pub with traditional cuisine. Dinner was very good (delicious pies and veg dishes too) and Katie welcomed us really well. 🙂
