Roseleaf in Edinburgh, City of

The highlight of our trip to Edinburgh. Excellent food and magnificent service!

Was recommended to try this place out as it was disable friendly ( in other words I could get in ! ) Atmospher was lovely, went at lunch time on the 11th March. I confess it was the choice of puddings that attracted me in the firstplace, but sadly the macaroni cheese was so good and a generous portion I could cope with any more. So I returned in the evening, determined not to be beaten ! I had a small portion of the Cullen Skink soup, it was wonderful. I was very aware of the puddings calling me from the menus. So I ordered the Bread and Butter Pudding. It was a tough choice, and it arrived in all its splendor. I admit I had to leave a bit of it but nearly finished for the it for the challenge. Let’s just say I didn’t roll out of that place in my wheelchair I waddled out. Good atmosphere, good banter and good service through out the day. No hesitation in 5 star revue. I will return and I will start with the puddings first !

Love this place with all my heart. Whenever I visit Edinburgh, I go straight down to Roseleaf. It's always a full house when I go, which is already a good sign. The staff are the absolute best, and the atmosphere is so welcoming. My go-to is the red cappuccino and eggs Benny On The Shore.

We had a traditional Scottish breakfast and a morning pint, all good!

This was my first Cullen skink experience and Roseleaf’s rendition has set the bar for all other restaurants. This soup is life-changing.

I've been a couple of times and loved my experience. I absolutely adore the food, the service is impeccable and it's such a cozy, welcoming space.

A good place to go but the prices to portions size ratio isn't great. I ordered a hot chocolate only for it to be served in a very small glass not meant for hot drinks

t’s honestly impressive how much effort you’ve put into crafting this ridiculous story. If we were to believe your version, we’d sound like absolute monsters fresh out of a rave—so let’s set the record straight. First and foremost, at no point did we “mistakenly” use the wrong exit. That part of your narrative is pure fiction. We left in a completely normal and uneventful manner, despite your attempt to paint the situation otherwise. Secondly, your claim that a member of your staff saw us dancing in the street hours later is laughable. If anything, it sounds like whoever made that observation might have been the one who was “blitzed.” What’s truly disappointing is the level of unprofessionalism shown here. Instead of addressing customer concerns with honesty and integrity, you’ve chosen to fabricate an exaggerated, almost comical version of events to discredit us. If this is how you handle feedback, it speaks volumes about the kind of establishment you run. We expected better, but clearly, that was a mistake.

I am really disappointed with the welcome we received at this bar. We were refused entry on the pretext that we were too drunk, even though we were in no condition to bother anyone. It's a shame because the attitude of the staff was very unprofessional and ruined our evening. A little more tolerance and understanding from the team would have been appreciated

Probably my favourite place to go for a breakfast in Edinburgh. Reasonable prices and delicious menu! I've had evening meals and just drinks in the evening. Every visit the staff have been friendly and chatty. Recommend this place to everyone. Both meat & vegan options!

No complaints. Everything on the menu was incredible. Especially good for fish Forgot to take photos of anything except the bread and butter pudding.

During a break to Edinburgh we took a trip to Leith and stumbled upon the Roseleaf for a drink. Staff were so warm and welcoming, great selection of beverages, I had a Lind & Lime gin & tonic 👌 the food menu sounded delicious too. Cody quirky decor, it had a really lovely relaxed atmosphere. We will definitely return next time we’re in Edinburgh!

Absolutely lovely place with amazing and hospitable people. Atmosphere there was so sweet and felt like home. Food quality was great as well (I took avocado toast and my friend got pancakes for himself). The portions were great. I also loved that menu was made using national geographic journal. Staff members were all friendly and helpful ;)

Lovely environment... Quite small but that's what gives its charm. Food was delightful. Music was great, giving a lovely ambience. Decor is eclectic but tasteful. Definitely recommend 👍

Roseleaf is friendly & relaxed, we love coming in for a delicious brunch or pint at the bar. Plus the staff are brilliant!

Lovely meal, as always. I always like to introduce my friends, who are foreign but live in Edinburgh, to the wonders of the Roseleaf. There were two couples, one from Brazil and the other from Germany. Needless to say they want to return….and soon! I would definitely suggest booking at any time of the day. Yes, you can walk-in but I think it’s always best to phone to book a table.

Had a lovely dinner with family here tonight. It's a cosy place with a nice atmosphere and a menu that is not that same old pub stuff you get heated up from frozen. Time has obviously been taken to cook from scratch some tasty original food that has a homecooked feel with super professional quality and presentation. If you want proper food from a pub in Edinburgh then take the tram to Leith...it's worth it! They've raised macaroni cheese to levels it has never reached outside of Italy. Quirky cocktails in tea cups, and an impressive drinks list for a small place. Don't be put off by road improvements in the area, the inside is a haven, staff are friendly and welcoming.

Delicious brunch. Tried the red cappacino and wasn't disappointed. >> South African Rooibush tea spiced with cinnamon bark, jasmine blossom & a gentle kiss of star anise. Espressed just like a regular cappuccino drizzled with blossom honey & cinnamon on top.

Have been here a few times and every time the food and service is outstanding. Lovely and cosy evening atmosphere for a meal and some drinks - would highly recommend the bread and butter pudding to finish - it was delicious! Will be back to try brunch and a coffee soon.

Went for brunch here with my friend and had a wonderful time. I knew it's often busy on a weekend and had contacted them about a booking. They responded promptly offering me a slightly earlier time which suited and advised of the 1hr 45min slot. The eggs benedict was delicious and the selection of lovely teas and coffee (as well as a good selection of cocktails) Would highly recommend for brunch or even a drink visit but would suggest booking at peak times due to its popularity. Great location, atmosphere and quality. 10/10 would recommend!!

Roseleaf is a lovely restaurant with a welcoming,cosy atmosphere and friendly staff. The food is very food. I especially love the macaroni cheese that is served with a side of fries or garlic bread. The coffee is delicious. I also had a elderflower presse with my meal which was delightful. This is truly a gem of restaurant in Leith.

Mainly marked down for the toilets which were sub standard. Not the cheapest in the area for beer either, but at least they can be bothered doing cask ale - a good thing. Staff seemed friendly

We had fantastic brunch, with some imaginative and rather lovely juices. This is a great, quirky place, with a great sense of fun.

We happened upon the Rose Leaf cafe purely by chance and we LOVED it! Great atmosphere, wonderful friendly service without being too much, and the most amazing food! What we loved the most were the little personal touches, the candle in the teacup, the menu in an old copy of National Geographic, and the dinky half pint glass! It has the feel of both a pub and a cafe, which is lovely. Great chilled out music, and perfect lighting for dinner. The food was outstanding. We had the haggis croquettes and garlic bread, then for mains we had salmon and the beef and ale pie. Just lovely. Homely, full of flavour and generous portions. We would give this place 6 starts if we could!

The food was fantastic, we had breakfast here, it wasn't cheap, but that's usually how it is here in the city if you expect quality... Furnishings, dishes, etc. unique, overall a pleasure, a joy and something special! We reserved online, so no waiting time. Thanks for the lovely experience!

Fantastic, unique atmosphere and friendly service. The halloumi and roasted veg focaccia was a favourite. The mushrooms / avocado on toast was quite good. A really unique spot for brunch/lunch or for a few drinks.

The food at this restaurant was excellent! I had a delicious vegetarian burger, and they also serve traditional Scottish dishes that are very flavorful. The atmosphere was beautiful, vibrant, and festive, which made the experience very enjoyable. However, the ambiance might feel a bit too noisy for some people who prefer a quieter dining setting. Overall, it’s a great place with tasty food and a lively vibe!

Been a regular visitor to the Roseleaf since its opened about 15 years ago. This time, I was left feeling slightly disappointed. Whilst the food quality was good, I was surprised by the attitude of some staff. I had asked if we could have the Xmas menu and was told that it had to be pre booked. When I said that I had made a reservation but that I didn't think the website was entirely clear in stating that the Xmas menu had to be pre-booked, I was basically greeted with shrugged shoulders and the person walked off not seemingly at all concerned. The overall service then proceeded to feel a bit rushed, not giving more than a couple of minutes to choose our dishes. When it came to pay, a 'discretionary' 12.5% service charge is added which I think is unreasonable. This idea has come from London where most places do this, it would be better to leave a tip up to the customer to decide, rather than putting pressure on with the 12.5% already added to the bill. So fairly let down overall. The staff used to be friendlier in my opinion and I don't agree with this style of service being added on.

This place never ceases to amaze me! Have always gone with friends/adult family members but went with my 3yr old for the first time and I cannot praise the staff enough. They were so accommodating! We had Sunday lunch and the staff and service were fab, food delicious and general atmosphere was just lovely even though it was super busy. The kids food offering was spot on and my 3yr old was thrilled that they had a kids loo seat as well as a grown up one! Thank you rose leaf!

We arrived at opening time and went for the Big Yin Breakfast, was a great breakfast, served on a hot griddle pan which kept everything hot while we ate. Really tasty, excellent service, will come back next time we’re in Edinburgh.

This this is such a cool wee bar / cafe. Lunch menu has a great choice of avo toasts wirh several toppings, French toast and the usual fayre but they also do amazing fishcakes and the smoked mackerel kedgeree topped with a poached egg was divine! Great atmosphere with fabulous quirky decor....absolutely worth a visit!

Staying in Leith for a couple of nights,night two, looking for a Greek Restaurant as seen on TA, found it but closed so a bit pe'ed off. Checked on TA map, next nearest was Roseleaf. My diabetic wife had very low blood sugar, asked on spec if table available, yes, we got squeezed in. Full fat coke to sort bloods out and we were up and running again! Very pleasant waitress served us patiently, we ordered a range of plates to share, Cullen Skink, a particular favourite, Black Pudding Salad , Fish Cakes, Haggis Croquettes, a strange mixture but its what we fancied. To wash these down, Edinburgh Gin and some excellent local IPA. Dishes arrived in due course, quite quickly, all together as requested. Skink was delicious, very substantial version. Black Pudding Salad was excellent, nice black pudding, possibly Stornoway, lovely bacon, great dressing. Haggis croquettes, lovely mix of haggis, neeps n tatties. Fish Cakes, yummy mix of fish. Followed up with Orange Bread and Butter Pudding and Ice Cream. Great meal, so delighted we stumbled upon this wee gem, we will make a point of coming back again during our next visit to the big smoke.

1 soup and 2 mac & cheese for £60, in my local neighbourhood. Will be able to eat out once every 3 months, absolutely ridiculous.

The perfect escape on a chilly -2•C day! The full Scottish breakfast was 10/10 which came out on a sizzling hot skillet and the Haggis and black pudding were delicious (I’m converted!). The festive flatbread was perfection too. We were visiting Leith for the morning so asked for recommendations and the lady serving us was super helpful and kind! Highly recommend. ALSO! Our tea came out in a Princess Diana teapot so that gets 5 stars alone!!!!

Struggled to find somewhere in Edinburgh to have a decent brunch. At last! Fantastic menu, unbelievably generous portions of fresh and high quality food. Can’t believe we haven’t tried it before. What a great team. Nothing to fault

I've been eating and drinking here for years and it always hits the levels. Fantastic atmosphere, wonderful staff, incredible food. We're so, so lucky to have this pub serving and supporting the local community but also showcasing great produce and hospitality to tourists visiting the area.

A beautiful hidden gem of Edinburgh, endless vegan options and a warm, lively atmosphere🧡 I recommend the Banana Flat cocktail and the After Eight shot! 🍸

I am writing for Turkish friends, you can come with peace of mind.. it is a family friendly business. They helped us with food for our little daughter.. the food is delicious.. the prices are relatively affordable.. the soup of the day was celery and carrot soup. If you come across it, make sure to try it.. have a nice holiday

This place gets a good name, (I was apprehensive as last time I came the entire place smelled very strongly of cooking fat/ grease and I couldn't wait to get out and wash my hair and clothes, thankfully not so this time). This time we had a lovely table at the window. Staff were pleasant and the service was prompt enough. Delicious freshly squeezed orange juice, shame the cost was wasted by being a glass full of ice. I ordered the turkey flatbread which came with fries. Small portion of soggy greasy fries, flatbread looked lovely - tasty colourful red cabbage and dressing but the small amount of shredded turkey was cold, bone dry and sharp - it was clearly reheated and tasteless. Definitely NOT worth £14.95! Wanted it to be better, will definitely look elsewhere for lunch/ brunch next time.

Stumbled across this place by accident many months ago and I'm so happy I did. I've become a semi-regular since. Staff is always so friendly and go above and beyond. My go-to dish is the Cullen Skink. It's an absolute must when you're here! Not many places do it as chunky or delicious as they do here. It's always busy, so I'd recommend booking!

Popped in for a late bite to eat after watching a movie at Vue Ocean Terminal. Very friendly and welcoming staff. We had soup followed by another starter each. We did not have to wait long and the food was tasty and well presented (especially the Cullen Skink). Some very good zero beers too. Recommended.

Lovely place for an early dinner on Sunday. The staff were really nice and welcoming. The food was amazing, and they have a good selection of ales.

We ate a very tasty fish soup here. As real cider fans, we discovered a new brand, fruity and slightly sweet.

We first discovered this place in July when here for a family visit - eight of us had brunch and it was fabulous. We are back for the weekend (just two of us this time) and the lunch was just as yummy this time. MacNcheese with jalapeños as Korean chicken wings were delicious. The staff is really friendly as well.

We stopped in to this restaurant thanks to Phil Rosenthal’s suggestion (SFP, IYKYK). We had the skink, wings, the fishcakes, chips, Mac & cheese, the aye pal and a pot of earl grey. Everything was very good. The wings were our favorite!

Lovely cozy atmosphere Quirky local café known for supporting local artists too. Drink variety is nice , I'd say on the mild strenght. Only tried the deep fried cauliflower with Vietnamese sauce and it was amazing! Staff is efficient and attentive. Will be back for dinner!

Came back for the chargrilled broccolini! 😆 No longer on the menu, but their other greens are cooked just as good, mac n’cheese just as superb as the last time. This chef really knows his stuff! Since been recommended by other friends there skillet breakfasts. So will be back to try them, along with their roast dinner! One of my favourite places in Edinburgh and definitely favourite in Leith. You can get a soft drink, a beer or a cocktail (that is served on kettles so you can have a tea/cocktail party!). And the food is very good. Ah, and there is that unique interior with cool staff.

Visiting from the US. The server was friendly and helpful with the menu. I was able to do half the Fancy Fungi and half the Holy Guacamole on the same plate to try both. I also added the chorizo, which had a nice crisp to it. Highly recommend!

One of the tastiest cuisines we have had the opportunity to taste in Edinburgh, all in a warm setting and a most pleasant welcome. The icing on the cake was that our waitress, who had lived in Nantes for a while, spoke perfect French. It’s definitely worth coming to Leith…

During our week-long stay in Edinburgh in October 2024, we ate at Roseleaf 4 times. The food is some of the best I've ever experienced, especially the McLeith Burger, Mac'n'Cheese, Puttanesca and fried cauliflower 👌. The staff is very friendly and accommodating, the atmosphere is very cozy and relaxed. When we are back in beautiful Edinburgh - certainly soon - a visit to Roseleaf is mandatory. Many greetings from Cologne to the team!

sarcastic staff! I was there on the 6th of October, and the waiter serving us was a bit abrupt and sarcastic when you need the table back, they rushed us out the door, and there was high amounts of pressure. No, you said that this is a bogus review. I have decided that I won't be returning.

Warm and welcoming with wonderfully tasty food.

We booked in over a month earlier as a group for Sunday Lunch. When we arrived we were told that Sunday Lunch had sold out and that you needed to order in advance. It would be sensible if people are booking on a Sunday to clarify whether they are coming for Sunday lunch or not, as we would have pre ordered if we'd known we had to. It's not mentioned on their website, nor in any of their follow up booking emails.

Came for the food and was not disappointed. Best Cullen Skink we tried and by far but everything was good and sophisticated. Add the quality of the service and you have one of our best experience in Edinburgh

Went here because we saw this place on Somebody Feed Phil. Was just planning to take a picture and leave, but we decided to sit at the bar and have a drink. Thoroughly enjoyed sitting at the bar and chatting with the bartender and the locals. Then we decided that we might as well eat here too. Had the Cullen Skink as well as other dishes. Wow, the Cullen Skink was really delicious. It was the first time we tried it. We then had it at several other places, but the Cullen Skink was the best here. Go here to sit and have a drink and enjoy the atmosphere of a good Edinburgh pub.

An absolutely wonderful, charming place. We took the tram down Leith and were looking for a place to get a snack and a beer. We found Roseleaf via Google maps and headed that way. We sat at the bar and had some ice cream and a beer each. The bartender was amazing. It was apparently pretty easy to spot us as tourists :) He wrote down lots of recommendations based on our itinerary around Scotland. He stood and talked to us for nearly our entire stay. Tips, tricks, jokes, stories. It was amazing and so totally Scottish. We ate our ice cream, drank our beers, and enjoyed his company. Definitely stop in if you’re nearby. He asked if we stopped in because of “the show.” We didn’t know what he was talking about. He told us that Roseleaf was featured on Somebody Feed Phil on Netflix. We hadn’t seen the episode (or even heard of the show) but we’ve since watched it. Great show and it really shows you the wonderful ambiance of Roseleaf and Scotland overall. We were coincidentally sitting in the same seats at the bar in Roseleaf where they were.
