Party of four went for dinner at 5pm prior to ferry departure. All ordered fish & chips however fish batter "soggy" and chips "soggy". Disappointed as other reviews painted a different picture. Getting the oil in the fryer to the appropriate temperature to ensure "crisp" batter/chips is not rocket science.

We had a fantastic welcome to the island from Gavin and Jen serving in the pantry. They served afternoon drinks & shared info on the islands highlights. We then returned for dinner which was well prepared, delicious and wholesome. The staff were attentive and we left with full bellies. We had breakfast and coffee before the ferry. There was a great atmosphere amongst the locals also waiting to board. All in all a must see. Would highly recommend. Gavin has taken a family business and made it modern whilst honouring his relatives who opened the cafe in 1988. A true gem of the isles.

Our Seafood Night at The Pantry was both memorable and magical. The sharing platter - langoustines,scallops,crab,gravadlax,2 kinds of mussels - with home-made bread, was absolutely delicious. How on earth did we manage the scrumptious pear and rhubarb crumble and the tasty cheese platter as well....? Not to mention the crisp white wine and mellow glasses of port.....

My husband & I have had several lunches & dinners here. There is outdoor seating for warm, sunny days & a lovely restaurant with huge windows looking towards the sea. The food is great. We’ve tried the soups, baked potatoes, sandwiches & baking at lunch. At dinner we’ve had the fish & chips, sea bream, trout, scallops, the burger, the chicken dish & the vegetarian pasta. Every meal has been excellent- and the local honey ice cream is homemade & a real treat. The staff are all locals & the owner Gavin is lovely. The homemade empire biscuits are the best I’ve ever had! This seems to be the heart of the island, it’s where you find good food at decent prices & the locals seems to hang out there too. It’s brilliant to support a local family business when travelling to an island. Would 100% recommend.

We had booked for a Wednesday because it was advertised as a seafood day. We both had scallops with black pudding as a starter and mussels to follow. We also had a glass each of local beer. The bill for 2 came to £66. I'm afraid the only things we enjoyed were the black pudding and the brown bread that came with the mussels. The scallops were insipid and the mussels had no taste at all. The liquid in the bowl was just water not mussel liquor. Neither scallops nor mussels are hard to cook- they require very little cooking and we can't think how these delicious foods had been treated to have so little flavour. Some of my mussels weren't fully open. We tried to be positive about this disappointing experience so can commend the prompt and friendly service.

My partner and I were on holiday here in Colonsay and as there are only two places to eat out on the island, we wanted check out the pantry. We arrived at 2.20pm and were given a table outside that was disinfected. We sat and looked at the menu and waited for our order to be taken. Over 20 minutes has passed, nobody had come to the table to take our order. So being patient, I thought I’d order using the app suggested, Hopt. I placed our order and was told by the app it would be ready by 2.50pm. We waited, and waited whilst other people were being served, new customers arrived, were being served, had eaten and even then left before we saw our meal. My partner had to go inside to enquire as to where our order was, to which the reply was ‘that it had been done for a while’ and something about running out of paper. Out came two cold toasties, a limp and lifeless salad with a pot filled with scraps of potatoes meant to be chips. To top it off, a chocolate milkshake which was out of a carton and a rather mumbled and poor apology.A very expensive lunch, and an incredibly disappointing and annoying experience added to our holiday.

We visited the Pantry a few times during our visit to Colonsay, once for dinner and another few times for coffee and cake! Our dinner was one of the best I've had anywhere, never mind on a small island - it beats many meals I've had in supposed upmarket establishments in lots of big cities! The seafood platter served up was fresh, delicious, well prepared but with none of the 'nonsense' sometimes associated with it, the smoked mussels were a particular favourite. The honey ice cream we had for dessert was fabulous - made using honey produced by Colonsay's own black bee population! We sampled a few cakes on our other visits - all were superb. The coffee too was excellent!Overall the food, the welcome & service were first class. I would definitely recommend.

Haute cuisine this is not, but it is an extremely good pierhead cafe with no pretensions to be anything else. Extremely welcoming and very accommodating, very friendly staff and nice food, with local beer to wash it down - thoroughly recommend the Pig's Paradise. Would have given 5 stars except for a fish supper which had been fried after the fat had cooled down following the pre-ferry rush, resulting in soggy mushy batter. The various items - prawns, mussels, scallops, oysters, crab, salmon and cod bites were perfectly cooked, in total, a large portion. I wasn't keen on oysters so was allowed to swap these for extra scallops. The other member of our group had a beautifully cooked fillet of trout - also delicious. The chef/owner couldn’t have been more helpful choosing a seafood platter for 2 which consisted of scallops, mussels, oysters, crab, prawns and hot smoked salmon. This is not anything like a french version but interesting, satisfying and well presented. Mussels cooked and cold as were the scallops ( would have liked them seared or marinated in something). Added to that a bowl of chips and lovely white wine, what better way to end our trip. It looks likes they have lovely homemade cakes etc through the day but we never managed to try them. We were fortunate to be on the Island on a Wednesday night . The Seafood platter was excellent and despite the comments of other reviewers regarding the prices it was very competitive with mainland and other island pricing. I would suggest that the "price critical get a grip on the reality of Island economics. It was also an advantage not to have the platter dominated by a "pile of crustacea in shells" : good to look at maybe but little edible sea food after all the effort of exacting the edible . Everything was very fresh.

We had breakfast, went for large at £9.95 instead of small at £6.95. We ate outside, it was a nice sunny day. When it arrived I immediately asked my wife if she'd mistakenly asked for small, no was her reply. It consisted of Bacon (2) lorne sausage, egg, tattie scone & beans accompanied by a small glass of orange juice, slice of toast & tea. We checked the menu printed outside and the content was correct. The small breakfast did not include the orange juice and the tattie scone (90p for a pack of 6 in the local shop) so presumably these two items were valued at £3.00. However, it was well cooked & presented. Compare this with breakfast we had a few days later in Dumbarton on the journey home. Cereals + orange juice, Bacon (2) eggs (2) sausage (2) tomato (2) mushrooms, beans, tattie scone, fried bread, black pudding + tea & toast - for £7.00. Back to the Pantry, to follow tradition from previous years (repeatedly from 2000 to 2009) we decided to have an ice cream, small cone gone in seconds was £2.20. We fully realise that Island prices are at a premium for obvious reasons but we left that day feeling as of we'd been the victims of daylight robbery. Had the breakfast and ice cream been priced more fairly (say £1.40 for ice cream) we would have returned many times and the Pantry could have made a tasty profit from us instead of leaving a nasty taste with us. The tragedy of this review is two-fold, we did not (and will not) frequent the Pantry again, despite having patronised it well on all our ten previous holidays, and (secondly) it's the only poor comment we've got after many years of wonderful holidays.

We called here a few times for coffee and home baking. Got a very friendly and warm welcome. Close to ferry terminal so very handy before or after ferry journey. Very reasonable prices so quench that thirst after a drive round the island

Hecho en casa comida y pasteles. Mejor chocolate tiffin nunca.

Very conveniently located near the island's harbour and the CalMac ferry jetty. Has more extensive opening hours than some of the island's other 'retail outlets'. Offers drinks, snacks and is also the best place on the island to buy souvenirs (not handicrafts which you need to go elsewhere for). This, for example, is where one can purchase golf club-related items.Good place to visit once you have booked in and parked up for a ferry crossing.

Enjoyed 2 evening meals here last week. Food and staff were excellent. Gavin was so friendly, making up meals for the four of us on the second night from the previous night's menu as we had enjoyed it so much. Nothing was too much trouble. One of our party was using a wheelchair and the weather was pretty awful so Gavin popped the wheelchair into his boot and gave us a lift home. True island hospitality indeed. Thank you. We all hope to return.

This review is a little late, we visited the Isle of Colonsay early in October '16 and The Pantry featured on our daily itinerary, often more than once a day!. Gavin and the waiting on staff were lovely, accommodating our vegan diet so easily by making a few changes. The cafe offers soya milk too so it was lovely to be able to have a cappuccino. The staff and locals were so welcoming and friendly, we really felt at home in The Pantry. The wi-fi connected us to home too which was a bonus! We can't wait to return in October and look forward to one of Gavin's veggie/vegan breakfasts and the Colonsay Crunch cake (which was vegan) which we became ever so slightly addicted to during our stay! The shop also stocks Colonsay Honey and other gifts and has an extensive range of drinks - both soft and alcoholic. No visit to Colonsay is complete without a visit to The Pantry!

We went to the Pantry for the local fish night and boy what a feast it provided. £35 for a sharing platter, Oysters, Prawns, Mussels, etc. Was huge and beautifully cooked. Great staff, good alternatives on the menu.... but why would you choose anything else apart from the fish? Just wish we could get back to Colonsay sooner for another treat. If you are visiting the island this is a must visit destination!!!

The Pantry is the only place on the island that could cater for all of our dietary requirements (gluten free/vegetarian/vegan). The homemade soups are amazing, lovely home baking and great coffee! The friendly owner and lovely lady who run the place made us feel very welcome and our requests were no problem for them to deal with. I would highly recommend a visit here although it's easy to see why you want to go back every day! The highlight for us was mentioning a favourite soup of ours and we went back the next day and they had made it for us! Brilliant customer service!

We hired Gavin from the Pantry to organise a BBQ on Machrins beach the day after our wedding. It probably helped that it was a beutiful Sunny day on an amazing beach but Gavin and the other people from the Pantry made it really special. The food was excellent and they even came round to make sure our drinks (wine and Colonsay IPA) were topped up. It was my idea of heaven as everyone could just relax as the kids played on the beach and the adults were really well fed. I couldn't recommend them more!!

Friendly service and walking distance to the ferry. Quite s big selection of food from snacks to full meals and licenced. We just had Mr Whippy ice cream, which can go surprisingly wrong but this was perfect, ice cream of perfect consistency, fresh flake ( very rare!) and crispy cone. Lovely tea and coffee too. We were there on a surprisingly warm day, the café is very warm so be prepared for the midges if you want to sit at the tables outside!

I call it Debbie's place - you'll know it when you see it! - said several of the locals on Islay. A large group of us visiting the island had spent the morning dotted across it doing various different activities. I'd asked in the brilliant Islay Natural History Trust where locally we could grab lunch and was directed to the Bruichladdich Mini Market. The place itself is run by Debbie, her mum and her sister. It's the ort of place that is the lifeblood of islands the world over - half grocery shop, half cafe - all welcoming. Debbie's sister was in charge when a group of 15 of us rocked up unannounced. This would normally not have been a problem - plenty of outside seating - but that particular day the ferry had been cancelled, along with much of the stock for the shop and cafe. Undeterred the staff there made us feel welcome and pulled together a lunch which went down very well with all - children and adults alike. Think sandwiches and toasties with great coffee and a good choice of cold drinks. They also serve some amazing cakes - I'm told the rocky road was fab, I know the chocolate cake was! Although initially under pressure when we all turned up, the staff seated us happily and we had all eaten within about 15 minutes of arriving.

Visited to celebrate a friend’s birthday. The setting on the shore of Loch Fyne overlooking the ruin of Castle Lachlan is stunning and we were able to enjoy a bottle of fizz outside our shepherds huts where we would be spending the night. After a late afternoon stroll to the castle ruins we were ready for our dinner. The tasting menu served in the evening is locally sourced and is probably the best I have ever tasted. We chose the wine pairing which was excellent and presented beautifully. After a great nights sleep breakfast is delivered to your accommodation and this is another delight. Cannot fault this place
