The Codfather's Weymouth in Weymouth and Portland

Chips were greasy and rubbery, as if their chips cutter has broken blades. The fish, in this case cod, was just about acceptable although the batter was too thin and also very greasy. These are new owners as the establishment used to be called Alfs. Such a shame as gone from lovely to disgusting. Don't bother and save your money Disappointed.

I have eaten from here several times now and feel well qualified to review at this point. The fish is crispy and not drowning in batter but the chips are the star. They have seriously upped the chip game in the past couple of months and they are really good. Not just once but consistently on 3 occasions over the summer. So whatever you’re doing to those chips, please keep doing it.

Good selection of choices on the menu. Very good value for money. Fish cooked to order. So lovely and fresh. Will definitely be back

Absolutely love this place! It’s my weekly go to chippy, I will not go anywhere else. Food is always fresh, portion sizes are big, staff are so friendly and I get amazing service whether I go in the shop or get it delivered. Highly recommend this place to everyone.

Avoid,Avoid, Avoid ! Ordered £19 of food pea ball tiny and looked awful,,chips dry and hard, battered mushrooms tiny ones not worth the money. The food was Not fit to sell.! ,and they know it. Codfather oviously dont care about serving up a load of food that shoulld be thrown out at the end ofthe evening. Not sold. .Will never buy from there again. . Had to apologies to the people I'd brought for. Disgusting food not fit to eat. I highly recomend the chip shop on town bridge always lovely ,always the same whatever time of day.Dont buy from Codfather !!!!

Tried a few chippies on holiday in Weymouth over the years at last found an excellent one! Fish cooked to order, friendly staff. Chips piping hot and crispy as was the fairly sized small cod. Would definitely buy again.

I went in on a Sunday, lovely staff served me quickly. Got a Large Cod and Chips that were great. Will definitely be going again.

Best chip shop around. Brilliant portions and prices. Professional and friendly customer service. And the quality of food is above all.

Took 15 minutes to cook a simple order. Chips were the best i have tasted in Weymouth, ever. Shame about the rest of my order - overcooked/tasteless/cremated. Im used to waiting for chicken nuggets to be cooked to order, but they should take 5 minutes. I saw him testing each nugget with a temperature probe, throwing them back in the fryer - rsult, very overcooked and rubbery nuggets. Sorry, but i wont be returning ever.

Best fish and chips in Weymouth. Very generous portions. Might have to opt for smaller next time, but no hesitation about returning here. My friend commented that the chips weren't all greasy and we liked that.

Don't get me wrong there was nothing bad about our fish and chips from the codfathers, it was, well, fish and chips. Not the best, not the worst. Freshly fried and decent portions. Been a while since we've had fish and chips so the £23 was a surprise, but I guess that's todays climate for you.

Great food selection, perfectly cooked and served definitely worth a second/third visit. Delightful friendly staff who cater for needs plus the menu option has various meals catering for vegans.

Trip to Weymouth today and had a takeaway of fish and chips. Really impressed with the fact that everything was cooked fresh including fresh chips, not all sat in the heaters! Thought it was good value for the portion sizes and as far as fish and chips can go it was really tasty.

Fancied fish and chips so tried this take away last night. I asked the fish friar or was he the chip monk what was the difference between the small and large cod thinking if the large cod was big enough the wife and i could share it and save a few pennys.So expecting him to tell me the difference in weight he replied with a very sarcastic tone ...... durrrrrrr ones small and ones big and the big one costs more ...You walked into that one mate ....Well some people are not cut out for trying to be funny and there was silence when i found out the price and was asked did i want salt and vinegar .....when i replied.... just salt and a remortage ....ps the food was very good ..

Hi , we called here to eat after visoting the Portland Lighthouse, We are a family of six, me and my partner had the small cod and chips , but this was plenty, Lovely big chips and big piece of fresh tasting fish, and tasty crisp batter.Kids all had one of the kids meals , good variety, battered sausage, nuggets or fish with chips , anf my son had a cheeseburger.They all ate everything.Great price ,i think 5.50? For the adults cod and chips, and kids mesls under 4 pounds .Staff were very friendly , if we come back to Weymouth would definitely visit again

Quality food, large portions all cooked fresh when ordered. We were on holiday and struggled to find a fish and chip shop which had good reviews. This ticked all the boxes and had free off road parking opposite. Food all cooked on arrival and cooked to order. Portions were large and it was all excellent quality.

Best fish and chips we've had for a long time. On holiday in area so didn't know what to expect. We ordered the haddock and it was amazing cooked to perfection. So nice to have some good take away food just a shame we don't live in the area.

Good service, good quality fish, no bones, or skin. Extremely handy if you stay at the Harbour Lights guest house.

We've been visiting Weymouth for over 20 years now and must have tried every chippy in town. I always find it hard to score other chip shops as our local is excellent, which sets the bar to a very high level. With one exception, we've never had a bad experience with the Weymouth chippy's, they've just never been quite upto the exacting standards we've been accustomed to. It's a little bit out of our way from the campsite and as it's on a main road parking could be tricky at times. Don't let this put you off, Codfather's smashes it out of the park. Very Covid safe, the staff were very friendly. The food is freshly cooked, so don't expect to be straight in and out. The portions were the most generous we've come across in Weymouth and the food was absolutely delicious. Highly recommended and will definitely be back next year.

We have ordered a takeaway from Codfathers several times now. Every time they are super friendly answering the phone and really helpful. The food arrives hot, cooked perfectly and in extremely generous portions! One large chips will feed our family of 4!

Found this by luck as desperate with hungry teenagers between Portland and Weymouth, staff super friendly and suggested a great spot to eat it. The hake was so good, definitely worth checking out.

We had Codfathers deliver to us during lockdown and now use it regularly instead of queueing locally for fish & chips. We have small portions which are too much for us for one meal so I freeze extra and use another day.We think they are some of the best fish and chips in Weymouth and shall continue getting them delivered.

A delight of donor, chips, cheese, sauce and salad. All the loveliness of a kebab with proper chippy chips.

We've had three deliveries during lockdown, and have been so impressed that although we live right the other side of town, the food always comes with a smile and has always still been hot and tasty! The portions are huge, and great value for money. I'm sure we will be ordering again before long.

Wow, kept waiting 30mins for some cod and chips as any / all deliveries were put first, queue behind me was 10+, not worth the wait, poor quality, head for Bennett’s in town to see what fish n chips should be

Thought we’d try Codfathers as we hadn’t been there since we moved. Well it arrived promptly . The ribs, well there were 4 but only 3 were edible . The other one was very overcooked and hard.the chips were all little pieces. The fish was a decent size, but when we took it out of the container it had been sat in a lot of grease ,so the bottom was soggy. Then BONES !! 6 in my fish . Couldn’t risk eating the rest as I didn’t want bones in my throat.. sorry really wanted to enjoy this treat but sorry to say we won’t be having it again!

Can’t go wrong with it value and great food fast food the way it should be and great service from the staff

Codfathers is always the chippy we go to when we want a take out. Portion sizes are very good for the price you pay, batter is light, my son says they do the best chicken nuggets and you always get a friendly welcome. Delivery is always within a reasonable time and food is always hot when it arrives.. if you haven't tried codfathers then I highly recommend doing so

Had friends visiting so decided to get fish and chips from Codfather's as close to where we have moved. The portion size was large. The fish was very tasty and fresh. Chips were crispy on outside and fluffy inside which is how they should be. Service was polite and courteous. Would definitely go back again.

I cannot understand how this is rated 4/5 been twice when passing the first time was pretty terrible ultra dry chips and over cooked sausage but my boss paid so I thought I would return the favour just to give it another chance and it was as bad as the first time and it is expensive I would be ashamed to take people’s money on what I have been served

Sullen unfriendly service from female. No please or thank you. Chips were inedible however the fish was a decent size and well cooked. Would not recommend or return.

Went this evening at 8:30pm for the first time since new management took over.What a difference! Very impressed. No more frozen chips! Food cooked fresh, not greasy and piping hot. The chips were excellent and generous portion sizes.Friendly local owners with great customer service.We will definitely be back!

We stopped here for dinner during our stay in Weymouth. The food was really good. The cod tasted fresh and the chips were nice too. Bit pricey and the portion size wasn’t the greatest. But overall nice food

Absolutely delicious. I’m so glad I don’t have to go to Portland for amazing chippies. The chips are perfectly cooked, they are soft and fluffy inside a crispy coat. The pies are delicious and the peas and sauces make a lovely addition. Couldn’t be better.

Tried this place on the off chance and we wish we did not bother,very average fish and chips.a long wait,staff were not that friendly either,chips were greasy with a sweet taste and some were over cooked,the cod was poor quality so overall will not visit again and there is far better in the area to take our custom.

Lovely chips and sasauge food is wonderful couldn't reccomend more if in weymouth go here to get really good quality food good for families!

We have used the godfathers a few times now and never disappointed. The battered sausages are perfect and the chips are great too. Can not complain about the portion sizes either, we go for medium and there’s always more than plenty.

Some of the best fish and chips in Weymouth will be going again the chicken was cooked to perfection and the price is very competitive

Never in 30 Years have I had worse "Fish & Chips" The fish was sold as large - it was Tiny - It was Overcooked - The batter was cooked about 3 hours before I got it - Thick brown cold FAT - The fish was rubber - The Chips were Cold and rubbery - and this during the BUSY Hour - 1900. Never again - I was offered a refund which I declined. My evening meal was destroyed

Had a bit of time to kill before visiting my mum in Weymouth so decided to treat myself to lunch. The gentleman who served me was very pleasant and helpful. I only order a small portion but it was still more than I could eat. As the sun was shining I opted to sit outside the shop to eat it and simple watch the world go by. Most relaxing half hour I've had for a while.

First time we have tried Codfathers, Have to say it won't be the last. Iv'e never been beaten on fish & chips before, but i was tonight, The portion size was huge & very well cooked, Nice chips & nice crispy cod, We would definately recommend you give them a try, Added bonus they also deliver, You won't be disappointed.

Customer service, personnel, and quality of food supplied by this Fish and Chip shop just gets better and better. It has really improved over the last few months with the owner asking for and acting upon, any points raised by customers. A reall friendly atmosphere overall. I would like to point out that this is not a restaurant but a local Fish and chip shop.

We used Codfathers a couple of times in the last couple of weeks and it was great the fish is cooked to order so everything was fresh.

Called here on Friday lunchtime, whilst working in the area and had the £5 Cod and chips special. Batter was perfect and a good sized portion

I had fish and chips last night ,and they looked like they were leftovers from lunchtime . The chips were inedible ,brown , greasy and lukewarm ,and the batter on the fish was awful,like it was all cooked in old oil . They must have noticed this when serving me,whereas i didn't know until i reached home . If they say that if i called they would have replaced it , that is not the point , they should never have served this inedible greasy meal in the first place .I wish i had photographed it before throwing it in the bin .

Looking through the other reviews, this really must have been an 'off-night'. It really was amongst the worst take-away fish and chips that I have ever had - the chips were an unappetising dark brown and soggy, and the cod looked like it had been hammered flat and coated with an even soggier smear of batter. It's such a shame, the previous independent owners cooked the best, most golden, crispiest fish and chips that you could wish to buy.

So happy they do gluten free! Good sized portions, always hot and the staff always look happy! Go team!

Went in bank holiday Friday. Was very busy but the staff was very accommodating. Food was very nice and great value. Will come again

The food is very good, large portions that are cheaper than any of the rival chippies in Weymouth.

Our order was lovely; my daughters had the kids meals and the nuggets were whole chunks of chicken breast, not processed or reformed - very impressed! All the meal portions were a good size and the four of us were fed for under £20 - very reasonable!

Excellent service, good food and they also deliver. The food is fresh and tasty with plenty of selection. You do not have to wait too long and the delivery service is quick.

We have lived in Weymouth for 32 years and have only just discovered the chippy on Buxton Road. Very very good, no more to be said.........

Desperate for some a Fish dinner we decided to give them a go. The Haddock was cooked perfectly with a perfect batter. The Mrs had some chips and again... perfect. Good portions too. Will definitely be using them again. Even the delivery guy was a star, complimenting my choice of football team shirt.

Unfortunately I cannot recommend the cod mine was wafer thin and dry in places a real let down.

Now under new ownership the Chippy along the Buxton Road near the Rodwell Nature Trail has reopened under the name Codfathers. Like the one that already exists on Portland it is already gaining a reputation as somewhere that sells excellent food at decent prices.

On a family vacation we seen a chippy and stopped, and it was worth it. Fair price, good portions freshly cooked and tasted amazing. Will defiantly be stopping here next time I'm in the area.

We traveled to Portland as the food is great but now we can get it to our door here in Weymouth and we wasn’t disappointed the cod was crispy fresh and the chips were amazing soft in the middle and crisp on the outside definitely recommend!! :)

Although Codfathers have been on Portland for years, they have only recently taken over this small take out on Buxton Road. The cod and chips we purchased were of excellent size, well cooked and the staff polite and friendly.
