The Cod Father in Isle of Wight

We have being coming here for years I was very disappointed tonight when we placed a substantial ordered and wile waiting for the food (£40+ order)I got 4 bottles of iron brew marketed on the bottle at £1 the lady asked me for £8 I explained it was marked at £1 she said but we charge £2 a bottle got told £2 or put them back The fish and the sausage was ok the chips where on the poor side not like normal I know they are a small business and we should support them but being greedy I will be contacting trading standards

No idea what happened when this p,ace got bad reviews but our visit today was perfect. Large portion of cod, freshly cooked, crispy batter, and only the best shops take the skin off first. Simply faultless, and I know, I owned 4 shops of my own.

The location of this chip shop is great. Get your chips and you’re already right on the seaside. The staff inside had brilliant customer service and the inside of the establishment looked clean and tidy. We got a battered cod, chips and a fish cake. My partner said it was the best fish cake he has ever tried! The chips however, which some would argue is the most important part, were disappointing :(. We had asked for lots of salt and vinegar but they tasted like nothing. Sometimes, soggy chips can be lovely by the seaside but not these. My fish was very oily. It’s cooked in oil so some is expected but this was quite greasy. I was impressed that the chip shop do little cardboard pots of ketchup filled with a good amount of sauce rather than those small plastic ones. A good amount of sauce wad given to us which is normally rare.

A great place by the sea. Our meal was cooked to order and it seemed that every order we saw was cooked to order. We both had cod and small chips, a perfect portion size for a lunchtime meal (we were full for the rest of the day!). Perfectly cooked, tasty and flaky fish and not oily at all. If we come back to Ryde we will be visiting again!

We had fish and chips delivered tonight. Excellent food, great value and fantastic service. We will definitely order again - highly recommended.

Ordered a portion of chips, walked across the road to the bus station to eat them and they were cold and stale. I wouldn’t recommend, especially with a new chip shop right next door the Cod Father needs to up their game :(

This chippy used to be amazing but the last couple of meals have been questionable. The batter on fish is never cooked, just a soggy oily mess. we always ask for the fish to be wrapped separately from the chips so that the grease doesn't soak into chips, and I suggest everyone does the same. The chips are half raw and half cooked.

When away in a sea side resort it’s the law…..you must have Fish & Chips at least once. My Girlfriend is coeliac so it has its challenges but Im a great believer in this stay and age that it shouldn’t be restrictive. I had cod & chips it was tasty but I think the cod was slightly over cooked or it had been kept warm for too long, my girlfriend had the battered sausage GF which was the best option, she’s not overly keen on chicken nuggets. Our home town Chippy offers a good GF menu 7 days a week so we’re spoilt, but we appreciate the complexities. We sat outside and enjoyed the experience looking at the sea and watching the world go by.

When you go to the seaside it has to include fish and chips in the seafront. So, on the day we arrived on the Isle of Wight this was our F&C supper stop. Staff hard working, efficient and smiley. Had cod (they had a run on haddock) and chips, fresh cooked. Fish tasty, fesh and with really crunchy batter. Chips hot, soft in middle, crunchy on outside. Eating on the seafront... got to be ! Would definately recommend.

Pre-ordered for collection, which was good as it was extremely busy when we turned up. Fish and chips were lovely, plus an excellent selection of vegetarian options that you don't normally get in fish and chip shops ( try the battered halloumi). Would definitely return.

Ordered a few cones of chips, we had to wait a few minutes so they took other customers orders. While our chips were being done the other girl also did an order that was taken after ours. Which meant that two of our cones was missing quarter of chips because they ran out! After verbally saying how gutted I was to be missing a full cone of chips neither of the two girls pick up on it and didn't offer to re do them. Will not go back again

Lovely cod and chips at lunchtime. Nice to be asked if we'd like a slice of lemon with it too. Fresh cooked and very tasty. Cheese burger and chips went down well with my husband. Plenty of cold drinks on offer too. Pleasant and helpful staff.

We'd been at Ryde all day and were ready for something to eat at teatime. Fish and chips sounded good, there are a number of chip shops along the seafront - we chose this one. The fish was good, tasty and well cooked. The mushy peas left a bit to be desired.

I have been a regular customer of the ‘Codfather’ in Ryde for many years hence. On 13 June we ordered meals for four people via the Just Eat application. The order was made at 6.50 in the evening with a requested collection time of 7.15 where we would collect the meals in person.Unbeknownst to me, when the order was accepted I was told to collect at 7.35pm. This seemed a long wait for 3 portions of fish and chips, one portion of sausage and chips and a lot of mushy peas.While waiting for the food to be prepared I noticed how busy and stressed the staff in the shop were. It was clear there was a backlog of food for delivery to be collected as well as a shortage of chips. At around 7.25pm I noticed a sign being created advising customers that there were no chips. When I enquired if my order would include chips I was told that as I had booked via Just Eat then I would have chips as they were saving two buckets of chips specially for the internet orders. The staff member then proceeded to tell me that it wasn’t their fault about the shortage of chips as the manager had ‘left the staff alone to deal with this’. Once we all returned home we opened our meals and were shocked to see the state of the chips; a photo is included. We were all disappointed and my partner who loves fish and chips deemed them to be inedible and threw them away. In addition the fish was full of bones and all in all it seemed there was a total lack of care and attention in the cooking process. Had I actually seen the meals being wrapped I would have refused them however due to the pandemic I had to remain outside.As said at the beginning of this review, we are (were) regular customers of the ‘Codfather’ however given to totally revolting food sold this ti

On holiday on the island and we decided we would have fish and chips by the sea. We unfortunately chose the Cod Father in Ryde. What a mistake. The chips were horrible frozen ones, which barely resembled potato. The fish was very small and utterly tasteless. The batter was thin and bland. The only good thing was the curry sauce, which just about made the meal edible. We still binned most of the chips. Be warned.

We have been having deliveries of cod, scampi and chips all through lockdown and it has been great. Food hot, tasty, well cooked and on time. Delicious and a real treat.

Reading some reviews, they are very out of date. This chippy is great. During all 3 lockdowns they have kept going serving takeaways & home deliveries. Hope some of the earlier reviewers give them a second chance.

Throughout the past year we've always had great food (even with vegan options) from the Cod Father. One of the best chippies we've found.

Traditional it states yet they have Frozen Chips and the Fish is small for the Price. There are plenty of other Chip shops in Ryde so my advise is to Avoid this one.

they were over busy, people queing up .... and yet they still delivered the best fish and chips ive had for a long while! extremely helpful staff delivered superb results. the fish batter was crisp and fresh, the chips evenly cooked , but most impressively not a trace of excess oil, the wrapping paper was almost completely dry as it should be when food is cooked and prepared properly. the mushy peas were a delight as well.....not that ultraviolet green mess you sometimes get....proper mush peas.if your wondering whether to go large, take my advice, spend the little extra and spoil yourself....... its well worth it, i know sometimes you think "ummmm, is that really a large?" well not from here ....it is large. i would not hesitate to recommend the cod father and its now a firm favourite ..... and the bonus for me, its just along the road....... be back soon

Cold greasy food, completely ignored whilst stood at a open window by the 2 young girls taking the orders for about 5 minutes, they were more interested laughing and joking about whilst swiftly looking at me stood waiting and knowing they was ignoring me, I eventually had to ask are you going to serve me.... then I got served. After all the wait the food was awful, greasy cold and I would have rather licked the pavement for taste.

Just had a portion of chips. Was expecting good quality hand cut chips, what I got were obviously frozen chips no better than you would get in a cheap chain pub. No flavour or texture whatsoever. Disappointed as was looking forward to chips by the sea.

I am 20 years old and have recently moved too the Isle of Wight with my family, it’s a beautiful island with lovely people.... or so I thought !! I have visited the Island for many years and I have always been told about the “Battered mars bar” and how I’ve got too try it !!! I’ve frantically searched the island too find an establishment that could provide me with this unique service, after asking some friends, I found that The Codfather In ryde could provide me with this yummy desert !! Around 19:30 me and some friends after having a somewhat grease filled soggy battered cod decided for desert we would order 3 of the finest battered mars bars after hearing so much about this amazing sounding desert and for me a first !! We lined up and waited too be greeted at the window, after 10 minutes of waiting, a boy wearing a red bandana comes too the window too take our order, my good friend tells the boy we would like 3 battered mars bars, he then proceeded too shout at my friend infront of around 12-15 customers “what have I told you don’t come when......-you know I can’t do your stupid order when I’ve got fish and burgers cooking in the same fryer, I’ve told you this before” considering I have only eaten at this fish shop once, which was my greasy soggy cod around 30 minuets before, I’m not sure how this boy could make the assumption that I have been too the shop before and I know what his rules are for cooking battered items, considering he has a whole side of menu dedicated too battered products and the sign clearly states “we will batter anything” from a mars bar too an Oreo, any chocolate bar for that matter ? Too give the excuse that he cannot cook fish and burgers and a mars bar together, is correct but if this boy had any kind of recognised training in cooking he would know that frying fish and burgers in the same frying vat is wrong and if someone with an allergy ate something from that fryer it wouldn’t be a pretty sight, considering the size of the kitchen and how they promote the “we’ll batter anything” slogan I find it very confusing as too why we were denied this sweet desert ! When my friend proceeded too tell him that she didn’t know that was the rules he then shouted “I’ve told you this before and you don’t listen come back at 9 and I’ll do it for you” which In itself was some kind of joke or dig because due too COVID-19 the opening times have been changed too close at 8pm !! I am very upset and embarrassed by the way me and my friends were treated infront of many other(like me) paying customers, I will not be returning too the cod father after this experience, it’s over priced, the fish comes out still swimming !!! (In grease) and if your order something that the bandana boy can’t be bothered too do, he most certainly will be very rude too you and for sure not to do it !!!! Very very rude staff I feel sorry for the owner!!!

Would like to say thank you to the lovely man who was just closing and still went out of his way to cook two bits of fish when the fryer was off and some chips and a couple sausages for my hungry clan. Visited here last night with my 2 year old son who is non verbal but makes squealing noises, whilst waiting for our food we watched certain members of staff turning their faces up holding their heads in such a dramatic way while continuing to talk amongst each other infront me how they could never get used to that noise, how bloody rude! Finally after discussing my 2 year old they gave me my food 2 lots of cheesy chips wrapped in paper! Not even boxed, Who puts paper on melted cheese? Food was disgusting burnt batter on sausages, chips were dry and bland, would certainly avoid esp with children with asd unless you like to be talk of the kitchen!

Friendly staff and food was cooked fresh when we ordered, maybe as it was close to closing. Huge portions (ordered a small battered cod which was very big) but very yummy. Also some seats available while waiting for food.

Previously, I'd had a very good portion of their chips while waiting for a bus. So a few days later, when staying in Ryde, I went in and ordered cod and chips for my tea. It was a Friday evening, 27 September. An unpleasant scene was in progress behind the counter, with the man at the fryer--headband and beard--angrily shouting at one of the two young girls serving, going on and on at her. Not sure what she'd done wrong, but all she could do was say sorry. Not long after, as I was waiting, an older guy appeared, and, when told, he started on the girl as well, in just as loud and nasty a way as the first guy. Customers stood bemused. When the girl served me my fish and chips, I told her to take no notice of the bullies (there's no other word for them--an older woman wouldn't have stood for it), that she was fine and doing a good job.The chips were good again, but the cod (had it been frozen?) solid, chewy, and tasteless--worst I've had in years.But the reason I'd never go back is the behaviour I saw. First, you shouldn't reprimand staff in front of customers. Second, if you do reprimand, you shouldn't rant and rave--Gordon Ramsay's no model for staff treatment. Third, it shouldn't be done twice, by two different people--once is enough. So the atmosphere in Cod Father was toxic. I hope both young girls serving left that job as soon as possible.

Had Cod and Chips the place was busy which we thought “well must be good” and it was. Cooked lovely.

Nice little chippie and great for seaside fish and chips. However the chips were a little lacking and the calamari over cooked.

I called in this afternoon whilst my partner waited outside. I stood at the counter, being completely ignored by the young girl (who looked no older than 15) and then a woman walked in after me and was served BEFORE me!! To say I was annoyed was an understatement. The woman ordered then proceeded to ask for a taxi number, to which the girl ran around to get a number for her. She then took my order, then the woman came back and said the number didn't work. The girl then went and got a phone out of the back, rang the number and handed the phone to her. All this time, I was still waiting and was completely ignored and, when I was FINALLY served, I got no apology, in fact, she just trayed up the chips and slapped them down on the counter and said 'there you go'. I put my own salt and vinegar on and walked out. The service was terrible and she had a bad attitude. I am an islander who lives in Ryde but I will never go there again. I am not one to complain usually but I feel this deserves it.

Give this one a miss. Poor quality fish, grey in mean amount of soft batter. Chips like overdone oven chips, staff quite indifferent.

After a long journey and a not particular easy check in at our reception we decided to visit this establishment as it was just a few yards from our hotel. The girl on the till looked no older than 14 and the Fish Fryer about 20? There were numerous comings and goings to and from the 'back room' with a variety of staff but only the young girl and Fryer seemed to be actually doing anything! We sat at the uncomfortable bench and high table available having told the staff we would eat in. When ready we had to get up and go to the counter and collect our meal (we thought that with the number of staff who were flitting about the place one of them could have brought it over to us) not a chance. We started to tuck in but having only eaten a small amount of my fish and hardly any of the chips they went into the convenient rubbish bin situated at the end of the counter. My wifes followed shortly after (shes braver than me)!It has got to be the worst fish and chips we have ever had, and despite this the shop always seemed to have customers in whatever time of day we passed.I strongly suspect that (having observed the staff that most if not all were seasonal workers who had little or no idea of how to cook and serve this traditional British dish. Avoid at all costs or eat at your peril.

The food was below average. I ordered large chips and a large sausage battered. The chips were ok and the sausage left a lot to be desired. A bit greasy. I thought the staffs attitude would have been good, but I was sadly mistaken. I received my order unwrapped in a box. Chips inside and the sausage on top. When I asked if I could have it wrapped up I received some eye rolling from the young girl serving. Lacking communication and people skills would be one way of describing her. Bad attitude, below average food results in not ever receiving my custom again. I wouldn’t return if you paid me.

Worst piece of cod I have ever had in my 66 years. Impossible to flake apart and had to hold it in my fingers and bite off to get a piece. I've had easier bits of grisly meat to chew. Horrendous!

Ordered a large fish and chips after being shown from the fridge what a large fish looked like, freshly cooked and big enough to share on the sea front. would totally recommend this place. Service from the staff was polite and friendly.

I have eaten at many fish and chip shops in my life but these had to be the worst chips I have ever had, They tasted like those cheap chips that you get pre frozen that the kebab shops usually sell. Didn't taste like classic fish and chip shop chips whatsoever. If you want that classic fish and chip shop chip avoid this place like the plague.

Not a place to visit if you are hungry. Portions are incredibly small but taste wise OK. I could have counted the amount of chips I was given on 2 hands.

My wife and I come to the island every two years to visit my family and make it a point to visit the Codfather every time. Consistently great fish and chips with perfect batter, which trust me, makes all the difference. Love it.

Among the normal options, this place offers to deep fry anything that you bring there for a small fee.

Ordered through Just Eat. Missing items, poorly cooked food, and major attitude from the woman I spoke to over the phone who told me the server had definitely packed it and I should contact Just Eat for a refund or wait an hour (minimum) for the missing food. Poor service, poor food. It’s disappointing as previously the food has been good. I can only imagine the owners are off and had left someone with no customer service experience in charge...

Visited here a couple of years ago and returned due to the food being lovely back then. Unfortunately we were disappointed this time round. The fish was ok, but the chips were clearly oven chips. They weren't what you would expect from a chip shop. We won't be visiting again. :(

Used this establishment as a stop gap as was in rush to get ready for a party!! no time for full blown meal...Well the chips were amazing and so was sausage roll..The guy behind the counter was very good ...They even have a fridge with an assortment of drinks..Unusual but convenient ..

I returned here after a few years and my last experience wasn’t so good ,but it was a Sunday and they were open and I fancied fish and chips. Glad I gave them another chance as they were rather good. Portion size was good and not at all greasy. I shall definitely return again soon
