Bayside Fish & Chips in Isle of Wight

We visited a week ago really enjoyed the freshly cooked food.

Myself and my Partner come to the Isle of Wight on a regular basis. Shanklin is one if our favourite seaside towns and, the Seafront, Amusement’s etc gave got to be amongst the best on the Island. Reading some of these ‘reviews’ I can only come to the conclusion that there is a campaign against the place. Having seen some of the on-line video and so-called reviews I gave come to the conclusion that it’s a case of some self entitled millennial/Gen Z individual who has got their mates to leave dishonest reviews. Every time myself and my partner have visited Bayside, busy or not, the Staff gave always been friendly and the food EXCELLENT!

Use takeaway most weeks as easily the best in Shanklin. Always excellent, food and service. No hesitation in giving 5 stars.

Shocking people skills and terrible manners

Avoid spending money with this company. Aggressive behaviour on a kid trying to sing outside.

This has to be one of the worse fish and chip shops on the Isle of Wight. The only thing that was okay, were the chips. The mushy peas were watery and tasteless, the curry sauce was not much better. However the worse was to come, the fish was absolutely awful, coated in a lot of batter this fish was more minnow than full size adult fish it was so overcooked the fish was a crispy and burnt as the batter, it took staff about 18 minutes to serve what is essentially fast food. To add insult to a bad meal they charged £28, which by no means is cheap. If your ever on the Isle of wight. Give Shanklin's Bayside Chippy a miss. And read Trip Advisors Reviews. I've eaten worse but not much. Though there are lots on the Island that have good reviews. The problem is you don't expect a chippy to get itso wrong.

Terrible attitude. No mannerisms. Rude. Abrupt. Physically threatening customers and locals. Will not be back here.

Called in to get a takeaway dinner for my wife and I. Definitely was not fresh fish that we were given. Sick most of the night with diarrhoea the next day. Avoid!!!

Probably the worst fish and chips we've ever had, soggy batter under the fish oil leaked onto the warm chips,plus the staff need training in customer service.

Fish was terrible but not as bad as the owners attitude , wouldn't go back if it was the last chippy in the uk

One of the worst fish and chips I've ever had. Fish full of bones and batter was so greasy that I don't think they bothered to drain off the fish. Staff couldn't have cared less, food was binned.

I don’t know what all the bad press is about. I had a lovely meal and got to meet the owner and he was a very sound guy!

Really good service, great experience and great food! Not sure if the person who served me was a man or a women but it’s 2024✌️would recommend to anyone!

Very poor.... the place was bad, the beans was bookers own brand and was horrible. And the fish was not even cod... it was some knock off, and yes I no a good bit of cod fish living next to the sea in cornwall.

Checked website for opening times. We had an hour and a half before they closed but when we got there at 17.45 we could only get takeaway and they were closing an hour early. Staff taking orders blamed someone else for website error, he has done this before, thankfully the staff cooking the chips was really good at his job the man in charge taking orders needs to change his attitude really hence the poor mark on atmosphere and service. Will get chips from the Old Town and bring them down to sea front in future.

Quality of food was very poor together with very bad customer service. Very rude staff avoid eating here.

Started off slightly dubious with the 3 star rating, but it smelt great outside, so gave Bayside a go. So glad we did!! The chips were just perfect, fluffy on the inside a little crispy on the outside and not greasy. The fish was fresh tasting moist and flaky and the batter was amazing. Light and crispy and again not greasy. All in all can't understand the 3 star rating and will be back again!

shocking service told my fish was being cooked then seen the old man take 1 from the Hot hold and then refried it and tried to sell me this. Once I refused and asked for a fresh one his attitude stunk. avoid this place far nicer in the near vicinity

Worse chip shop I ever used by far rotten.

Very rude to people. Older man is very sarcastic and angry. Wouldn’t recommend their food either. Chips dehydrated n fish was dry as cotton wool.

I recently visited this fish and chip shop and had an incredibly disappointing experience, mostly due to the owner's rude and unprofessional behavior. From the moment I walked in, the owner was dismissive and acted like serving customers was a hassle. When I asked a simple question about the menu, I was met with an impatient tone and eye rolls, as if I was wasting their time. On top of that, the food was mediocre at best. The fish was greasy, and the chips were soggy and undercooked. With all the better options around, I can’t see why anyone would want to support a business that clearly doesn't care about its customers. I won't be returning, and I definitely wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone who values good service and a decent meal.

Staff were really rude to busker and being very petty. Ended up shouting at a woman not nice to see from a business.

Visited 18/9, thought food was expensive and small quantities. Cheesy chips were cooked too long in microwave. Normal portion of chips seemed like they needed a few more minutes in fryer. Chicken and mushroom pie smaller than those you normally get in a chip shop. Surroundings clean however tables and benches were fixed and uncomfortable- not much room. Would hesitate to visit again

Awful awful awful!!!! The owner is rude too. Do not waste your time or money. Food takes too long, atmosphere is cold, the staff look tired and uninterested. Customer service not great either. Avoid unless you life depends on it.

Family and I had food poisoning the next day from the chicken, customer service was as rude as it can get

The food was really lovely. The battered sausage was fresh and hot as so was the chips. Service was fast and efficient and I highly recommend this place to people who want a decent chippy on the Shanklin beach front.

I have never had such a terrible piece of cod . I can only think that it was re cooked . There was nobody in there so maybe that is why . The batter was chewy, the fish definitely over cooked as dry and had a crust to the edges . The chips were very nice and hot . Poor show for £24 for 2 meals

On holiday here & fancied fish & chips but then Tiktok happened. Pretty disgraceful behaviour from the owners. Chinese it is.

Had violent food poisoning from here would avoid, wish I read the reviews before hand, staff were rude and were aggressive towards another customer.

The fish was clearly green in colour, my wife was violently sick, when we approached the owner he got very aggressive towards us

Chips were excellent, fish was poor. More batter than fish and the fish was chewy. Atmosphere was like a fast food restaurant without soul. Wished I had gone for one of the many other restaurants or pubs that according to Google reviews had great fish.

Worst service ever...Sullen faced guy took our order place was empty and when ready stood up the other end of the counter shouting a number hadn't even been given one. The fish was nothing special and the chips were disgusting served in paper cartons. Wooden knives and forks not even allowed to put your own salt and vinegar on. Worst we have ever had. Waste of money.

£12 for cod and chips with added hair for good measure, and told the staff done nothing well done for wearing hair nets and my wife had a hair in hers two very poor can't see how they can get away with this 2 dinners 2 hairs

Not bad for a high turnover chippy on the esplanade. Reasonable but nothing to write home about fish, good chips and peas. Lovely gherkins. Take it across the road and eat it on the beach to make it special.

Definitely not worth the price. Chips were pale and soggy, fish was swimming in grease.

8.10 for a piece of cod worth 6.00 at tops very small, Small portions, nice batter Live here and won't t be going v?back.

There are a lot of mixed reviews for the F&C shops in Shanklin, but as this tied in with a visit to The Chine (and less walking rom my hotel) I gave it a try. The restaurant looked clean and always people dinning when walking past. It wasn't overly busy and my order was quickly taken. Only waited few mins and the box was piping hot; it was a decent portion for £11 (cod & chips) and tasted fresh! I sat in one of the seating bays along the front to enjoy.

Can’t beat chips by the sea front, great chips and cooked fresh. Nice restaurant seating area as well to dodge the usual UK weather.

Had fish and chips here yesterday, must say it’s the worse I’ve ever had. Fish was hard and well over cooked , chips were greasy and black. We tried to feed them to the gulls and they flew off and left them also

Chips, well couldn't eat half if them they were that bad, black and soggy. We had 4 meals, hardly any batter on the sausage, only half the cod was cooked but on the positive side both the scampi were okay as were mushy peas. In addition none of the meals were what i would describe as hot, sadly most of the meals went into the bin. Seemed little point in mentioning at the time as staff would have seen the condition of the chips and the lack of batter on the sausage when serving them. Top Tip - Go to The Steamer Inn for good quality fish and chips.

Batter was bland (needed more salt). Fish was nice and chips were decent. Not having the option of putting on your own salt and vinegar and paying extra for ketchup are drawbacks. Slightly disappointed.

This fish and chippy has lots of seating for a sit down lunch or dinner out of the sun. It is really open plan with byfolding covered doors to allow Th breeze to pass through. Love that you could order on the self order screens for speed and the food was all freshly cooked. There was a lot of choice for non chip eaters like me, I can highly recommend the sausage and egg bap. Reasonable prices for seaside food. Would defo return .

Solid fish and chips. Ten minute wait time at a peak time wasn’t bad at all - batter for the cod was pretty good but the inside was a tad on the drier side but the chips were sensational - genuinely some of the best i’ve ever had.

Good vegi options.... had cheesy chips, mushy peas, curry sauce, battered vegi sausage, onion rings and pickled egg. All excellent. Made me a happy chappy!!

We was so looking forward to the food from here. Having visited a few years ago they were the best chips I’d had in years. How disappointed was we. Firstly the staff were ignorant and miserable. The chips were just like having a bag of batter bits. Disgusting and tasteless. The sausage was the smallest sausage I’d ever seen. Avoid this place. Try somewhere else. They are fleecing people due to the location!! I will never ever eat from here again.

Has a contactless till , easy to use the food is good and tasty not a bad price either

The fish was so nice and fresh we came here twice during our holiday on the Isle of Wight. Generous portions and modern quick access for ordering: online QR at table or self serve machine, as well as at the counter. The restaurant is also a fantastic location if you have a young family close to ammenities.

Horrible food, I thought the food at the hotel we are staying at was not nice how wrong was I. Staff are just stood around waiting for customers

I had a Cod and Chips and my partner had Scampi and Chips. The batter on the Cod was soggy and the fish inside was dry. Considering the shop was nowhere near busy, I’m surprised it was that bad. Wont be back.

Though the facilities were "modern" due to contactless ordering option. The fish and chips are the lowest quality I had. Most places on around London has better quality fish that them considering this is a seaside F&C shop. The boys looked at bored and miserable when we came and did not feel welcome at all. Hopefully improvements can be made.

After a long day I just fancied chips and battered sausage, sausage was cold and hard. How long had they been in the warmer. Chips weren't cooked, some were hard. Staff asked if I wanted salt and vinegar and none was put on......won't be back. What's more disappointing is this place used to be the best.......

Was staying in a hotel near by and was looking for a fishshop came across this one on the seafront. We sat in ordered from our table though QR waited around 10 mins we got 2 cod & chips buttered bun bottle water. Had to pay for Tomoto sauce which you really should get for free. Chios were nice chunky, fish wasn't the biggest 7oz but was ok flavour. Gets very busy so plenty of staff.

Was staying I'm Shanklin for few days and came across this lovely fish shop. It's a takeaway and restaurant Can order at counter or at your table order online. They shout your number out and collect from counter. We had the 7oz fish with chips buttered bun Tomoto sauce. It wasn't the biggest fish but ample for us. It was tasty and filling, Staff seemed friendly enough and very busy. Plenty of tables & seats., the view was great lovely on a nice sunny day.

Very busy but staff lack in customer service. Some people don't want to eat in they want takeaway but not wrapping of the food, just handed a plastic bag and had to pack it up. The fish was dry over priced and greesy. Staff need to learn the please and thank yous. You might be busy but manners wouldn't go to far.

This is a basic fish and chip shop on the beach. It is open at the front and has lots of wooden fixed table and benches inside. We have been a few times. Its not gourment fish and chips but its still decent quality for the price. Food is all cooked to order and there is not normally that long a wait. Staff are friendly. All food is served in takeaway cartons so you can choose to eat in or take it away. Open at the front so easily wheelchair accessible. Fixed wooden bench seating but wheelchairs fit easily at the end of a table. Great fish and chips by the sea.

Although the chips were good and the views are lovely, there needs to be someone cleaning the tables after each sitting, as there is a big turnover of customers. More worrying was over hearing a customer asking if the chips were gluten free and the server didn't know the answer. He didn't know what the chips are cooked in nor if the chips were cooked with the fish in batter. He was clueless. Training every staff member in allergy awareness is essential. Your customers could become seriously ill or even worse.

This is your standard fish and chips on the beach with standard seaside town fares. Nothing is particularly good but nothing is particularly bad. I would personally say they are not worth the price that you are paying for but it’s not unpleasant.

The service was 10/10, i asked for a Kids' meal, they gave a lot of chips and a small drink with it, i payed 5£, I'm perfectly satisfied with the place.

Mediocre at best. The chips were luke warm and had obviously been sitting around a while which given the trade was surprising. Obviously popular with locals but guess they're not much competition this time of year. Chips saved only by the heat from the fish. Batter was ropey (not fresh batter) and a real disappointment given it's location to the seafront! Sorry but for me it didn't live up to previous reviews. Maybe earlier in the day would have been better? Won't sadly return.

Ate here twice this week. On the Sunday I had fish and chips and it was stone cold and the fish was hard and chewy. Decided to give it another try on Friday and it was miles better, hot and crispy. Shame about the first meal. The staff are all young but are friendly, polite and very hard working.

Was really looking forward to fish and chips from here as it was awesome on our last visit. Really disappointed with the food chips were awful and fish not very nice. I think the oil needs changing as it was very greasy and batter was dark and overcooked.

I use this chip shop 3 times a year when we come over to the caravan. Our first port of call is the bayside chippy because this food is usually excellent. However our food this afternoon was awful, the chips were horrible the fish was overcooked and the batter was dark brown as the oil needed replacing. I ate a third of the fish and could still taste the oil 2 hrs after. The staff seemed more interested in messing about high fiving , of shaking hands. The chap with the pony tail kept leaving the serving area then taking his hair bobble out and running his hands through his hair then returning to the serving area. Maybe the manager wasn’t there to keep an eye on them. Really dissatisfied. I will try and contact the manager to let him know. Usually 10/10 now 0/10 Shame .

Overcharged by miserable and rude staff

We arrived just as they were about to shut and everything was cooked fresh for us. Chips were really nice, cod was decent and a fair price, lovely location. No complaints at all, not sure why the rest of the reviews aren’t better.

We went to Shanklin, Isle of Wight for some fish and chips. We were so disappointed the food was terrible, the fish looked as if it had been refried to make it hot and it was overcooked. The chips were no better. The staff all appeared to be very young men that cannot have had much experience. We would not recommend this to anyone.

Whilst I cam understand some people being very particular about their food and expectations- Sorry but here programmes such as The Hotel Inspector and the like have a lot to answer for - Some people seem to have extreme ideas about good and bad. Myself and my partner have used Bayside over a number of years when visiting the Island, and whilst it has to be said that sometimes some of the young staff can seem distracted, it is far from unusual for a seasonal establishment not to have these issues. A lot of young people don’t seem to have the solid work ethic these days. I can’t recall a time when food we have bought has not been, at the very least, more than acceptable. I wonder if some of the bad reviews are competitors trying to influence the business? I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Bayside, almost everything is freshly cooked. Yes, sauces in little sachets are a bit annoying, but can you imagine the mess if they used big squeezey containers? The more unruly children would wreak havoc!
