"The food is excellent, but it is overpriced, and the portions are small for the price. They should at least work on improving the portion sizes."

We ate at the Coconut Tree on a Saturday lunchtime. We were not sure what to expect especially with one of the party being vegan and another vegetarian (and none knowing anything about Sri Lankan food). However, we were very pleased with the menu. The server patiently explained the options and the food, which was delicious, arrived promptly. I would definitely recommend this restaurant. I'll hopefully be visiting again, next time I go the Birmingham.

Food was good. Ordered kothu rotti, egg hoppers, black pork and few other dishes. All of them are good. We expected rotti, will be similar like Kerala/tamilnadu porotta. But it is slighly different. Prawn curry was really good.

This is my second time visiting The Cocunut Tree Birmingham and each time never disappoints! As a Sri Lankan living away from home, the food here really hits the sweet spot! The black pork curry is the perfect blend of flavourful condiments and spices and the chicken kottu with egg is perfect. The egg hopper with seeni sambol, coconut sambol and pickles is a definite must try. The spice levels are perfect (not too much, not too little). I will definitely be back each time I visit Birmingham.

As someone who has dined at many restaurants and reviewed countless eateries, I have to say my experience at this restaurant as thoroughly disappointing. I expected authentic Sri Lankan flavors, but what I received was far from it. First off, the prices were shockingly high for what was being offered. I understand that quality ingredients and good service come at a cost, but what we got in return was nowhere near worth it. The portions were incredibly small, to the point where it felt like a starter plate rather than a full meal. It felt like they were trying to squeeze every last Pounds from their customers while giving them as little as possible. As for the taste, it was bland, uninspired, and lacked the vibrant, rich flavors that Sri Lankan cuisine is known for. The dishes lacked freshness and authenticity, making the entire meal feel like a major letdown. I’ve had much better Sri Lankan food at half the price elsewhere. It seems like they are more focused on making money rather than delivering a quality dining experience. If you’re looking for genuine Sri Lankan food, I’d recommend skipping this place. You’ll find better food and value almost anywhere else.

4 of us, and I am gluten free. Had never tasted Sri Lankan food before but now it's on my top favourites! They serve tapas style so sharing is caring! We had a hopper eac and shared 11 dishes between us and a cocktail each too. We had no room for dessert. The flavours, colours and combinations of spices and heat was 10/10. Honestly, I can't wait to go back! Ps, LOADS of gluten free options.

Cannot recommend this place highly enough - the food was amazing, the service was amazing and the drinks were delicious. The bottomless brunch (with options to order as much food as you want, in groups of three dishes per person) is incredible value for money, definitely the best I've had. I was on a large table with friends and there was understandably some food left over, but staff didn't hesitate to offer up a take way box so we could enjoy it at home and avoid it going to waste... somehow it tasted at least as good the next day! Can't wait to go back.

I recently dined at this restaurant, and I have to say I was thoroughly disappointed. The food portions were extremely small, especially considering the high prices. It’s simply not worth the money! Furthermore, the dishes lacked the authentic Sri Lankan flavors . I felt like I was being overcharged for something that didn’t meet expectations. Overall, it felt like the restaurant is more focused on making a profit than delivering quality food. Not recommended!

Do not recommend for Sri Lankans. The main issue we encountered was the portion size of the food. It was quite small. They were served more as side dishes. And it’s not worth paying the amount for a main dish but receive a side dish! It’s not even enough for children. One dish was £10 but we finished it in a few bites. Very disappointed as our group left very hungry! The cocktails didn’t taste as good it shows. Overall disappointing experience.

**Extremely Disappointing – Tiny Portions and No Authentic Flavor** We came as a group of 20, hoping for a good Sri Lankan meal, but it was a huge letdown. The portion sizes were shockingly small—what were supposed to be main dishes looked more like sad side dishes on tiny plates, and each of those tiny dishes cost £10! For over £200 spent between all of us, we were all still hungry when we left. The cocktails? Not even worth mentioning—barely any flavor or kick, they felt more like watered-down drinks. And the food? Absolutely not worth the price. You’d think for the money, at least the taste would deliver, but I can honestly make better kotthu and fried rice at home. Speaking of fried rice, it had a burnt taste. This place is an embarrassment. It's a shame that they're presenting this inauthentic version of Sri Lankan cuisine to people who might think this is what our food is like. Tiny portions, no flavor, and a complete waste of time and money. Avoid at all costs!

To my Sri Lankan fellows, I do not recommend it. We brought 20 people for the first time. As a committee, we called the Cheltenham restaurant and spoke to the manager regarding 50% off for students and he said that he would inform the Birmingham restaurant about our arrival and to apply the discount. We go there just to find out we are not allowed to get the 50% off, when we told him about the call we had, he did not even bother checking, he was so careless and arrogant. After requesting for some sort of compensation for the inconvenience, they decided to take service charge out of our bills. The dishes start arriving and they look like side dishes! Like the fried rice and kotthu were tiny, everyone left so hungry we had to go McDonalds!!! And for that tiny dish it’s £10????? Cocktails felt more like mocktails. Definitely not worth it. We had them as caterers them for our big event in Birmingham, which they did a great job. But the restaurant itself is not worth it. The food is so blunt too, no salt, no Sri Lankan taste. I’m honestly so disappointed, my mom used to work here and I was really excited to go and experience it.

Honestly, I had high hopes since this is a Sri Lankan food place; however, we were let down by the food portions we received. Compared to any other restaurant with quality food and good portion sizes, Coconut Tree is not comparable. The portion size was not enough for £10?! It almost felt like a little side dish. To make that portion size equal to a proper £10-worthy main dish portion, you would need to order at least three or four more £10 portions. ( IF YOU ARE ON A SUPER STRICT GYM DIET..100% RECOMMEND THIS PLACE)is not acceptable! We do not expect this sort of situation from a Sri Lankan food place. This place is not a good representation of sri lankan cuisine . DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE UNLESS YOU ARE INTO INSECT-LIKE PORTION SIZES :) Very disappointed. Wasted money. (50% student discount is not valid on weekends, just in case they "accidentally" forget to let you and your large group of people know that.)

I'd like to give the place 4 stars but I just can't. The location isn't a big issue, but no car park in the immediate vicinity is a factor. The welcome was OK, but nothing special. We were in a party upstairs, many of whom had already arrived. Nobody clearly directed us or welcomed us upstairs etc. Once seated I had to go to the bar, no table service or indication of it at that point. Maybe if we'd been welcomed? Bar service was OK but to pay £12 for a beer and a diet coke, then basically handed a glass (still wet from the dishwasher)and a can wasn't a good impression. Food was OK, but I've had far better south Indian /Sri Lankan food before, and messing up our order, that of the adjacent family members and serving cold food to others in the party, suggests they're not practiced at dealing with large parties. Portion sizes are adequate at best but saying on the menu that they're reasonably priced so you can spend your money on drinks (not surprising given the mark up) is pretty blatant spin. And to serve mains straight after appetisers are finished shows a lack of professional training. Simply put if you're out for a bite to eat and a few drinks pre-night out, its probably fine, but if you want a good meal with good service, there's better out there. OK, nothing special.

Great food, service, value, and so authentic! Looking for something different and found this just of Broad Street when looking on Google maps. Should be marketed more in my opinion as was very quiet for 6pm on a Saturday evening. Order black pork and a rotti. I love meat, but not quite enough for me. Was flavoursome, but slightly salty, but I still ate the lot. Portions looked small, but I was full after, so there was no room for a delicious looking dessert I saw arrive at another table. Great hidden gem, I highly recommend. Will detour to go back, next time I'm near Brum.

Visited with a party of 8 on a Monday evening. Service was very slow with drinks arriving 1 by 1 over the space of 20 minutes, food then came out at a similar speed. I understand its tapas small plates, but why send out the rice and then not send out the curries for 20mins. The order was messed up as well so 1 of our party only got 1 out of his 3 dishes (he left hungry) The food was nice, but the portions were very small again I think the tapas thing is great for businesses to hide behind for slow dispatch of food and small profitering portions. To top it all one our party was unwell about an hour after the meal.

Because there was a discount, we decided to try some dishes we don't usually eat, and today we chose to have Sri Lankan food. We arrived at 12:00 and we were the only customers, maybe it's busier in the evening? We ordered egg hopper, prawn curry, devilled chicken wings, roast chicken kotthu, sticky rice, and rotti. Actually, before ordering, the waiter mentioned that some dishes would be on the smaller side, and when they arrived, we were surprised at how small the portions were. I don't usually eat this type of cuisine, so I’m not very good at judging it, but overall it was quite tasty. However, the meat portions were quite small, so meat lovers might find it insufficient. As for the sticky rice, the texture was different from the usual East Asian sticky rice, more like a cake consistency. In the end, after finishing the meal, the two of us were surprisingly full, even though we had originally planned to order dessert but couldn’t fit it in!

The food was really tasty, as good as we'd heard about. Highly recommend the black pork and the devilled chicken wings. Both really unique flavours not had anywhere else before. We ordered 4 main dishes, one egg hopper to share, one rice and one bread which was perfect amount of food for the two of us who do generally eat well. Our waitress was really nice, helpful and efficient. The room upstairs was really warm however with a few small fans attempting to keep the room cool. I think if it had been a warmer day outside we would have struggled to eat and feel comfortable. The only real disappointment was that out of all the beers available there was no draft at all available on the day and in total we had an option of 2 bottles, I find it hard to believe that on a Saturday night so many drinks were unavailable causing beer drinkers to opt for the considerably more expensive option with much higher profit margins, maybe we were just unlucky on the night. That said it did not detract away from the excellent food and I would return without question and just hope the drinks situation has been sorted. We spoke to the waitress before leaving and we are eager to return to try the bottomless food and drink option just to try more delicious dishes.

Very underrated! Located close to broad street but never seems to be packed and super busy. There aren’t too many Sri Lankan places nearby so I didn’t have high hopes for the authenticity and taste of the food, however it was all very good! We ordered the battered mushrooms, salmon curry with roti and two types of kotthu parota. The mushrooms and the kotthu parota were absolutely incredible. The salmon curry leaked out of our to-go box so I didn’t get to eat much plus the roti was a little dry and hard than I personally prefer. Booked a lunch for 20 people from Halesowen u3a Dining Group. We arrived promptly at 12:30 and were seated at two tables. I was on the first table, and we were served well, but the second table had to wait a long time for their food. I had finished eating my meal before the second table finally received any food - which was at around 13:30. The server apologised for the delay, saying they were short staffed. However, another table of 7 or 8 people arrived after our group, was served, ate, paid and departed before our second table received any food. If you can’t cope with a large booking, then don’t accept large bookings. Having said all of the above, the food was very good, and the whole experience is quite different to what you might expect from an “Indian Restaurant”. I know it’s Sri Lankan, not Indian, but I had not realised how different it would be. We all chose the lunch special at £15 per head. This comprises a hopper, curry, rice and sambol, and also includes a soft drink. Despite the experience for our large group, I will definitely revisit, and can highly recommend the food.

Overall, a nice place to grab some food and it's something a bit different to usual. Positives: food was delicious, especially the hoppers and coconut sambal. These things really did put a smile on my face with how tasty they were. My partner described his goat curry as just like his mum used to make, which is very high praise indeed. The veggie dhal was tasty, a bit spicier than I'm used to a dhal being, in fact all of the food had a good kick to it. Service was swift and friendly. We had a Pina colada sharing cocktail that was fabulous. The setting had a nice vibe but was not too loud. Negatives: we ordered some cocktails that came in a lion cup before our Pina colada and these were not good. They tasted watery, with little alcohol, and thanks to the unusual cups and plentiful ice there was only about 5 sips in them! We had to take some food home, and we were charged 15p for each take out container. I've never seen something so cheeky in my life, after charging 10% for service and spending nearly £100 for the 2 of us they wouldn't even let us take the food we paid for without paying something extra. I would have knocked a star off just for this even if that cocktail wasn't bad. Ridiculous! Ask yourselves if the 30p was worth the negative lasting impression this practice leaves on customers.

The wait for food was over 40mins but only started with the main where we wanted our hoppers (starters) first. On the menu it doesn't say the food will come at random time. To serve drinks it took them 20mins. We ordered parotta rotti each is £4, the parotta was not freshly handmade, it was definitely the frozen parotta that you get from the Tamil shops. No waiters never checked if the food was okay or if we want anything else. I've been to many Sri lankan restaurants but this one was a huge disappointment and overly priced where I didn't taste much of authentic Sri lankan flavours. The food portion was very disappointing. This restaurant will be okay for non Asians but as a Sri lankan I will not recommend this restaurant to my family and friends.

We waited a long time for our drinks. The starters come out at entirely different times. Three people stayed at least 10 minutes longer than the other two, and we ordered the same starters; the drinks came out after the starters were ordered. I asked for table water, which came out quite a long time after we started eating. Considering the food is quite spicy, it’s surprising that this wasn’t considered in the beginning to make sure that table water is one of the first things that is put on the table; we were asked what the service was by a manager or owner at the end however there is no complimentary drinks or anything. Please avoid this place - they give misleading descriptions on items and refuse to correct their errors. Ordered vegan kottu which says on the online ordering form it contains vegan soy protein balls, and wanted something with protein. It was a whopping £9 for the small tray. Picked it up and they didn’t even have it ready or give me cutlery even though I arrived 5 minutes after my order slot. Walked all the way home and opened it up, and it had no protein in it - just shredded roti and vegetables…not worth 9 pounds. I called them to say they forgot it, and they told me the protein had been discontinued. After I pointed out that this was false advertising, they told me to email the address given on their website for a refund. It’s been several days and I have not received a response nor a refund. However, they seem to have received my message as the dish description has been changed. It’s a shame that the food is so overpriced and service so bad - I’ve been a regular at other Coconut Trees in the past and used to love it, but will no longer be frequenting it at any location.

While the food service was a bit slow, the staff's knowledge and attentiveness were exceptional, providing helpful recommendations without being intrusive. The "hopper," both with and without egg, was a standout dish, showcasing the unique textures and flavors of Sri Lankan cuisine. The "Fat Sisters Pumpkin Curry" and the "Black Pork" were also highlights, bursting with authentic spices and flavors. The cocotails were a delightful complement to the meal, featuring tropical flavors that perfectly matched the bold dishes. I look forward to returning to explore more of their impressive drinks menu. Overall, The Coconut Tree offers a relaxed and homely atmosphere, making it a perfect spot to experience the essence of Sri Lankan culinary culture in Birmingham.

2nd visit, we were disappointed this time, Egg Hopper's good, but pork curry very dry (even for a dry dish) the Parotta,s baked dry and unable to absorb any gravy from the Dahl.

Small, casual, and lovely place. We were well taken care of. Parking was a challenge, but not unusual for the city centre. The food was excellent, and the cocktails were fresh and delicious. Decent vegetarian choice.

Just ordered a beef brisket kottu from the restaurant sent me a chicken kottu instead which was very dry and probably has been cooked for a long time. Called the restaurant to resolve the matter and phone call went to the reservations team. When I address the matter person on the other end straightaway said did you try the Uber for this matter. I did explain to the reservation person whose mistake was that and he transferred me to the restaurant. No one answerd the call. Just call them again to see. Then again the same person answered the call and said he has informed the restaurant and will call back to resolve the matter. I’m also working for hospitality industry and I see this gesture very clearly disappointing and disheartening. It was just like they never care about the customers. Will not recommend this place at all.

I placed an order online in Uber eats. Prawn fried rice was stale and smelly. I couldn’t even eat a spoonful. And Chicken kothu parotta was very dry with no taste at all. Not to mention about the food quantity. They gave 1/4th in a small container. Waste of money

Meal was lovely, however for 4 days after I suffered from very bad food poisoning. Messaged restaurant on Facebook to report this and they did not offer any refund or invite to dine again with a discount. Disappointed in both of these aspects of service.

Wow. Chicken curry was like home. Rich and tender. My advice is order a couple of dishes as they are like a tapas style. Loved the parathas with butter. Recommend. Some great offers on the Web.

I recommend the fat sister, chickpea dish for vegan options.. Need to remember the portion sizes are small so you'll need to order at least 3 dishes per person Service was quite slow even though there wasn't many people there but I guess they get more deliveries. We were there not long after they opened for the day. Think the waiter struggled to help us understand didn't know how much we should have ordered so we ended up having to order more because we got hungry. Some dishes tastes quite salty and burnt.

I don’t think serving in Tin or Metal plates is not Sri Lankan standard and it shows low standards and giving wrong message about Sri Lanka. These plates for prisoners and introduced by British. What ever the concept, This plates are used to feed dogs in Sri Lanka now.

I had an absolutely delightful experience at The Coconut Tree! The vegan options like the flavorful vegan fried rice and Sri Tato were a true highlight, offering a delicious twist to traditional dishes. The heavy and nutritious daal was a comforting delight for my taste buds. We were offered sticky rice a traditional Sri-Lankan main dish by the staff on-the-house as it was our first time dining there. The atmosphere was socially welcoming, and the staff, including the co-owner Jonathan, were incredibly friendly. Jonathan shared his favorite dish, the lamb curry, which was a cherished mother's recipe. Knowing how personal the restaurant can feel and how invested the owners were in the lives of their customers was what made our dining experience even better. We weren't done, the evening became even more hit with the two rounds of shots on-the-house offered by Jonathan. It was a special liquor called arrack and it really added to our vibe. Moreover, Jonathan offered us free food and drinks generously on our next visit. We spent a pleasant time connecting with the staff, discussing our lives, and feeling genuinely welcomed. The Coconut Tree was not just a restaurant; it's a place where good food meets great company, creating lasting memories.

My inaugural visit to The Coconut Tree in Birmingham, a Sri Lankan culinary haven, was an absolute flavor revelation during a social group outing. From start to finish, the experience was a seamless blend of spice, charm, and laughter. A big shoutout to Jonathan, our Sri Lankan maestro, whose infectious enthusiasm added an extra kick to the evening. Hayden, our gracious host, orchestrated the night with finesse, turning our dining adventure into a symphony of delightful moments. The real stars, however, were the dishes - a gastronomic journey through the heart of Sri Lanka. Each bite unveiled a perfect fusion of authenticity. In a nutshell, if you're hankering for genuine Sri Lankan flavors, vibrant vibes, and a night filled with laughter, The Coconut Tree is your go-to spot. Kudos to the Jonathan and Hayden for crafting an unforgettable experience. Sri Lankan spices and good times await!

We went to celebrate out 5th year wedding anniversary with family and friends. The food, dessert and service was good was nice of the chef to introduce herself. The only negative was a discrepancy with overall price of payment as we seemed to be overcharged. I tried contacting the restaurant to enquire about this I was told the person who dealt with the payment would be in touch but I haven't heard anything despite me chasing via message afew times. Other than that i would recommend this place. Jackie & Robert

Went here for my birthday as a treat. We were a party of 4, It also catered for halal which was a definite bonus for us. We ordered various starters and mains. The starters unfortunately were underwhelming, and my prawn dish was cold. With the mains 2 of us ordered the steak which was cooked to perfection but unfortunately a little tough and under seasoned. The other 2 ordered 2 different pasta dishes which they both thoroughly enjoyed. The thing that stood out the most was the service which was exceptional. I was offered a free mocktail as it was my birthday and they sung happy birthday to me at the end of the meal, which was a lovely touch. Would definitely recommend and visit again.
