Most probably the best food I’ve ever had. If you are looking for a cosy pub with great food next to an open fire then you have found it. Make sure you book though as it gets very busy. Ask for Jamie and say jack sent you.

This is not the first time we have eaten at the Cock and we were not disappointed. My husband had the haddock with poached egg, he said was nice but a bit bland, I had the duck parcel which was good; we both had steaks and they were really tasty; puddings excellent and they got me some soya milk in so I could have a cappuccino, thank you. Lovely meal.

Had tried this as a result of good reviews. Sad to say the actual experience was somewhat rather less than this. My friend, who had been there before, did agree that this was much less than previously experienced. Perhaps "the 'real' chef had over-worked on Valentine's Day". Doubt that we will be returning, as there are other more lovely places [riverside for example] with better food options and way better parking.

We knew The Cock has just re-opened after extensive renovation and we called on the off chance of getting a table. We got one of the last tables and were not disappointed. The ambience is good, much better, the greeting and friendliness of the staff good. The meal was served quickly and efficiently and the food was good. The menu is a bit limited but that is probably due to the new owners finding their feet. Only comment is that the chairs could do with a cushion!! Well done the Cock just what is needed in and around Thurlow.

Just visited for a few drinks after a long country walk, nice enough basic village pub but let down by service. Not a remotely welcoming attitude from barman, no smile, no please or thank you. It costs nothing to make a customer feel welcome and at ease, but a sullen and off - hand approach means no point returning here for us. Beer ok I suppose.

A very nice village and lovely pub environment, much renowned locally and appearing in the Michelin Guide. I was, however, left a little underwhelmed and felt the prices too high for what I considered to be slightly above average pub food. Soup for starters was salty, and my selection of sausages and mash disappointingly bland. My children and wife had very little choice being vegetarian, and left a lot of what they were served. This possibly says more about them than the food itself, but more options would have been welcome. Sad to say that we won't be returning any time soon.

Top notch pub with great dining. Quite rightly in the Good Pub guide as one of the top 10 dining pubs in the UK (and I've eaten in a lot). Not one bad point in the whole meal. Wine was spot on, crab and leek tart absolutely melt in the mouth with a great salad, lemon sole cooked to perfection with a shellfish sauce adding a punch. Mrs Bobs duck was polished off along with the herb rosti it came with which added a light touch to an often overly rich meal. She never finishes her main courses. Staff lovely too. And it's all within ambling distance of lovely riverside walks. What's not to love. Go there.

Although we have eaten here quite a few times over the years, our visits are becoming less frequent due to the near impossibility of getting a table at a reasonable time. We opted for 6.45 this time even though it was earlier than we have ever eaten in a restaurant. My only slightly negative comment would be the small quantities served. The dishes were imaginatively conceived, perfectly prepared and well presented and we are no strangers to nouvelle cuisine, but this is a village gastro-pub after all, so the small quantities were a slight disappointment.

As a fairly regular visitor to the Cock, I know that I'm always going to have a great meal, but this time the starter surpassed anything I've had before. What looked to be a very simple plate of asparagus, Parma ham, a poached egg and truffle shavings was just fantastic. The cooked bits were cooked perfectly and the flavours all worked together so well. Main and pud also great, but my taste memory is only of the starter! Service is excellent - attentive, but not invasive. Wine list is varied and reasonable. Blackadder in the loo is always worth a listen to as well!

The atmosphere and service throughout our visit was great and all the meat we ordered was excellent. However I did have some issues with the food. I couldn't describe my starter of deep fried calamari as chewy but it was definitely firmer than I'd hoped for. My wife's scollop dish was excellent. My main disappointment was the garlic and potato rosti that accompanied my duck main course. The potato was slightly under cooked and there was so much raw tasting garlic in it I couldn't eat it as if I did it meant I couldn't taste anything else but garlic for several minutes afterwards. The accompanying duck was excellent as were the puddings we both had. So overall it was a mixed bag with some real highs but sadly also some accompanying low points.

This is the first time I've eaten at this restaurant at night, having had lunch here last month. The menu changed on the night we came so I was disappointed not to get the hazelnut gnocchi, which I had been told was amazing! On this occasion we decided not to have a starter and go straight into the main. The vegetarian choice was a bit limited with the ubiquitous risotto as one option (that I chose). It was very tasty but not very adventurous. My partner chose lamb cutlets and said they were delicious. Good wholesome food! The desserts we chose were the petit fours, which were very, very nice, and the rhubarb, which, although didn't taste enough of rhubarb for me, was tasty all the same. There was also an extensive fish menu on the blackboard including sea bass and king prawns. For meat and fish eaters I'm sure it is very inviting. The wine list was exclusively from the south of France and not to my taste. Although I found the house rose acceptable it wasn't what I would have chosen given a more extensive choice. We found that the noise level was quite high, making conversation quite difficult and it was a surprise to see children in there, as we were expecting it to be adults only at night. However, it wasn't a problem as they were well behaved. The waiting staff were great; very attentive all evening without being over the top. I would go there again to sample the other veggie option but would probably wait until the menu changes again before I make a third visit.

We met some friends for lunch there last week as we had enjoyed a really delicious meal there with them before Christmas. We all ordered the speciality sausages, which we had so enjoyed before, but, sadly, something was lacking in them this time, and the horseradish and mustard mash recommended to accompany them was not very pleasant. It was as if a whole jar of whole grain mustard had been stirred into it with horseradish sauce, which overpowered everything. My husband's squid, on the other hand, as his starter was perfect, and my crab tart also. We will return, I am sure, as we like the pub and the staff are very pleasant.

This restaurant/ pub had a lovely atmosphere - classy and elegant but still casual enough that some diners were there in their ugg boots (this is not a criticism!). Food was good - mostly homely (e.g. I had their home made sausages, and they looked rustic), but the desserts were pretty glamorous. While all the food was good, the highlight for me was the onion sauce that I chose to go with the sausages - rich and dark and sticky. It was amazing. I also chose the black pudding mash, which wasn't really that different from normal mash, but to be fair, I was probably dazzled by the onion sauce. Service was efficient but not rushed. Our 3 course meal didn't take much more than an hour and a half, though that suited us, and we didn't feel rushed at any point.

All in all a very good meal at a lovely venue and we won't hesitate to go back

it was refreshing to have the opportunity of choosing to eat unusual foods. Lovage soup was delicious! Other dishes on the menu used interesting combinations of flavours. Our meals were beautifully presented and portions generous. Good quality ingredients offering good value and satisfied customers. Staff were extremely helpful and friendly creating an inviting atmosphere.

I had the duck which was amazing and so tender. The service was impeccable. As it was a Tuesday night which is steak and chop night we were shown the the different cuts and informed of the best way to have them served. There was not one thing I could fault about the evening.

I went with a group from work on steak night. Everyone's streak was excellent! I had the rather unusual hangar cut, which was perhaps a little rare (the waiter recommended medium for this cut, but mine was definitely the rare side of medium rare). Very attentive service, and excellent food! Thoroughly recommended!

The staff were all very friendly and helpful. The four of us all enjoyed our meals very much. The cheese tartlet was beautifully cheesy and I will have it again, hopefully. My chicken was succulent, which is not often a word used with chicken and the potato terrine was good. The duck was described as very good by two and my husband enjoyed his steak very much We will return in the near future to repeat the experience. Thank you for a very nice evening.

We both had the roast beef and agreed that it was one of the tastiest Sunday lunches that we have had.

Lovely village location, "gastro pub" style. Interior is well designed; plenty of room between tables to be comfortable in busy times, although our weekday lunch was pleasantly not over crowded. Menu choice was so interesting and imaginative it was difficult to choose our meals from the wide selection plus a Specials Board which featured fish starers and mains. My Lovage Soup with Smoked Salmon Beignets was better than anticipated, very flavoursome, as were the Devilled Lambs Kidneys. We chose Beef Wellington for Two as our main. Served with red cabbage, tender stem broccoli, Dauphinois potatoes and Port Sauce! Every part of the dish was cooked to perfection and full of flavour and no soggy bottom on the pastry either. The desert menu was another wonderful challenge so we agreed on Rose Water Pannacotta with Raspberry Sorbet and the Pistachio and Lemon Cake to share between us. Only problem was they were both so good we almost didn't want to give half away. Service was carried out by a young team in smart black outfits, working seamless together for their customers. A very pleasant change indeed to be served by such happy and friendly staff. We plan to revisit and explore the menu further whilst enjoying a lovely dining experience again!

The three starters chosen: scallops on black pudding, clam risotto and devilled kidneys were all presented beautifully and absolutely delicious with the scallops cooked and seasoned perfectly. The three main courses were salmon and horseradish Wellington ,hake on dhal and chicken with a truffle mousse. The chicken was exceptional and the most flavoursome ,succulent chicken ever eaten. The chefs appeared to be young but they are extremely talented and a credit to your good reputation. The puddings all sounded lovely but we were all too full......next time!

Service was a bit slow as the place was very busy when we arrived. Good choice of food, friendly and welcoming staff and a cosy atmosphere. Just what we wanted - and the Sticky Toffee pudding was as wonderful as always!

A friend recommend this place as it has steak night on Tuesdays. The steak was amazing. It was a great cut of beef and was cooked perfectly. The presentation and sides were also top notch

We waited an hour for our meal, the three young waitresses spent most of their time chatting at the bar area to the point I had to ask to be served drinks. Badly managed. The food was ok when it finally came but the sausages were undercooked and the portions small and overpriced. The room was cold and the loos baking hot thanks to a heater on full blast. Wouldn't go back in a rush which is a shame as we used to visit all the time before it was a chain.

Seeing as my review was removed I will try again! Stay away. I went to the so called “quiz night” and it was awful. You would have found a better atmosphere in a morgue. Hardly any there, no music, vile smell and it was dirty. I use to frequent the pub before lockdown and it was fantastic. It has apparently changed hands since and not for the better. I will definitely not be going back. The smell and filth were enough to put me off my beer let alone dreary feel to the place. Very sad to say that I will not be recommending a once lovely pub

Bought a flat white, usually £3.50 but they charged me £4.10!!! I checked the price and they said the reason for this was for my oat milk. So I paid 0.70p just for having oat milk. Outrageous.

We were staying down the road at the Queens head, walked down the village and popped in here for a drink, what a great friendly little pub, Brian the landlord and his mum Linda, made us very welcome, we felt like part of the local community, we enjoyed so much we went back several times during our 2 night stay, and much preferred it to the Queens head. Thank you Brian and Linda for you hospitality. Julie G Shepperton.
