There were 5 of us, ordered and paid separately. The server was very friendly and helpful. I ordered the soup and asked that my roll should be gluten free, the server replied that it would be bread not a roll and I said that was fine. My soup arrived, with a roll. At first I thought they must have had some after all so didn't query it. I then looked closely at the roll and sniffed it (gluten free has a particular whiff). I took the roll up to the counter and the lady there took it from me saying it was definitely not gf and she then brought some bread which she declared to be 100% gf. I was very upset that such a mistake could have been made and I suggest that some retraining take place urgently. Some allergies are unpleasant and some are deadly, the staff need to be aware.

The system that used in the cafe doesn’t make much sense. Your advised what table to sit at on your arrival . Earlier today we ordered a pot of tea for two and had to pay at the table on ordering, then once we had made a decision about our breakfast, we ordered breakfast once again instructed to pay at the table. It’s very confusing why the cafe does this ? I have never been to ask to pay this way after ever item ordered usually it’s a bill at the end of your order.

Staff not very welcoming. We were told to wait at the podium to be seated but then just given 2 menus and told to sit where we want. Ordered the food and had to pay straight away which is most unusual. I had cheesy chips and they were nice, and decent value for money. My partner had the baguette panini (i didn't realise a baguette panini was a thing, I thought it was two separate types of bread). The Baguette was very small but tasty, but not value for money due to the size. When the food was brought to the table the server gave us two sets of cutlery wrapped in one small paper napkin. We had to shout the server back for more napkins. The silver metal trolleys the serving staff wheeled around reminded me of school dinners. I asked for salt and pepper and 2 small paper sachets were handed to me and walked off. The over all quality and experience has gone down dramatically since our last visit (pre covid). We wont be coming again.

Went for lunch: small bowl of salad, two chicken pesto paninis and a children’s meal ordered. Not much filling in the baguettes; they were not paninis. Small salad was fine. The children’s meal was mediocre. The chips were awful!. Full of grease. When you picked up a chip you could see the oil seep out of the chip. Needless to say not many of those were eaten and a waste of money. Won’t be going back there anytime soon. It seems to have gone downhill as we have previously enjoyed meals there

Good menu selection but pricey. Ordered two jackets and two 'baguette paninis' Jackets very well done, reheated, not great quality/tasting potato - one recipient eats anything but the other, more discerning, left half as unenjoyable. 'Baguette Paninis' - a baguette is a baguette and a panini is a panini - this was a toasted baguette so not sure where the panini features. Ordered both with pesto chicken and mozarella filling which tasted OK but one baguette arrived with so little filling that it did not come close to reaching the top of the baguette opening, just a scant smattering at the bottom of the split in the baguette. Waitress organised a replacement but only marginally better - she apologised, explaining that the filling is not made on site, but comes to store pre-prepared, so . Second one was equally unimpressive, just marginally fuller, Staff friendly, service quick but the food was just an expensive disappointment. For this price, paid elsewhere, you would enjoy freshly prepared lunches. Not local but when I do return to visit family in the area, unlikely to return. Shame because the garden centre is decent and the restaurant setting is pleasant.

This place is so expensive. £8.95 for a filled cob with crisps!! The waitress service leaves a lot to be desired, would much prefer self service. Only one pleasant friendly waitress, the majority being miserable and quite rude. How can you order a cake without seeing it first? Just doesn't make sense. Needless to say it wasn't busy.

The Cafe is very poor service and we have been waiting about 45 mins for Drinks which served by waitress with trolley. by the time we received drinks and it wasnt hot enough and it was lukewarm. We are not very impressed and we prefer to self service to pick the cakes or sandwiches and drink as well. We wont be coming back to the place until you need thinking about change like go back old home. Covid is over now. Need go back to normal where should be. We were so disappointed with our visit here, we used to come regularly but it has really gone downhill in the last year. The table service system doesn't work, it wasn't busy but we were waiting ages to give our order. I had a baguette and the filling was miserable - very little, dry and tasteless. It is very expensive for what you get. Sadly, we won't be going anymore :(

Came with my 4 year old at 11.20 wanting a scone and cup of tea. Had to wait to be seated, then left wondering what happens next. Asked a waitress who said there was a 15 minute wait for someone to come and take my order! Then it’d be another 15-20 minutes for them to bring me a scone even though I wouldn’t want hot food! I asked if I could just go up and get the scone (which I could see!) and was told absolutely not, it’s table service. Barmy. I walked away….

Having visited here for several years pre Covid, we were astonished to find on arrival that there is no longer a choice of roast dinner, and in addition, we had to be seated and wait to be served. We were a table of 5 adults and all originally wanted a roast as it is a halfway meeting point, and it had become a tradition. I chose Roast Turkey, and everyone else opted for Jacket Potatoes with a variety of fillings as they didn't want turkey, and that was the ONLY option. When our meals arrived, I was gobsmacked as the price was over £15 for a Roast Turkey dinner, and there was hardly anything on the plate!! Well, there was a large amount of alleged Cranberry Sauce that tasted more like jam! The roast potatoes tasted as if they had been precooked and reheated, potentially frozen....and the red cabbage with sultanas was disgusting, in my opinion.. I was very disappointed!! Our plates were not cleared when the server came to take our dessert order. Thankfully, I was allowed to have just custard on its own, and my mum, sisters and friend chose various cakes/desserts. To be honest, had I not brought my own 100's and 1000's the custard would have been so bland. I am not a natural moaner, but the entire family were not enamoured considering the years we had been coming! What has changed? Food provider? Management? Sadly, we have all decided to find a new venue for the future... which is a shame. It appears we are not the only customers of old who are not happy with your new service or food choices and in particular, the prices!! £15.65 for 1 x Roast Dinner!! Unbelievable, I shall stick to the Carvery venues in future when for <£10 I can get as many Yorkshire Puds as I want and a choice of 3 or 4 meats... Jane, our server, was lovely, but that is the only compliment I have... Has no one wondered why you are not heaving as it used to be? We would be fighting for a table before...

This was our 1st visit. We were shown to the outside area as we had our dog with us but we had to walk through the main eating area to get there. When we had finished we then had to walk back through the restaurant to the exit. If you can walk through the main eating area with your dog then why not have a small area inside as dog friendly. There was an area near the exit that would be suitable for this. The cakes we had were fine but the regular coffee was too small. It wasn't that busy when we visited so we didn't have to wait long for service.

I went here with my mum thinking it would be a nice treat to have a lovely look round and then finish off with some lunch, we looked at the menu and noticed straight away that the prices where extortionate, we have been here before plenty of times in the past but obviously the prices have gone up, we decided to both have the ham roll with chutney and a pot of tea for two the total price £22.70, when the rolls arrived there was was only butter on one side which wasn't a problem for me but it was for my mum she likes butter, but what really disappointed us was that the ham was the cheap ham and had a thick piece of gristle running right through it as soon has we saw this it put us right off, you really don't expect to pay that sort of money to get cheap gristley ham, also not once did anyone come over to see if everything was ok, which in most places it is common practice perhaps they don't because they don't want to hear the answers they might get back.

The Garden Centre is lovely, with amazing gifts, clothes & friendly, helpful staff. The Clock Tower Restaurant is letting them down. Our most recent visit saw agitated customers looking round wondering where their order was & one table was heard to say "We thought you had forgotten us! This seems to typify our experiences. After waiting quite a while, we ordered coffees & cheese scones. The coffees appeared without sugar or teaspoons but these things happen. What shouldn't have happened was the 'non-arrival' of the scones. We stopped a passing waitress to ask where they were & were told they were on their way. They still didn't arrive so stopped the same waitress to explain our coffees were getting cold & we'd wanted to eat the scones at the same time. Eventually, without apology, the scones were served by our original waitress who had just stood chatting at the till with other staff who seemed to have no regard for customers waiting for a table or waiting to be served. Unfortunately, all our previous visits have let us down as follows: - The inability to serve hot meals to 4 people at roughly the same time so 2 people can have almost finished before the others start. Not acceptable. Water is only served in VERY tiny glasses with no jug, even in hot weather. Tiny serviettes barely cover ONE knee & are not fit for purpose. Two people in our group of 4 had the Eton Mess and one dish was piled high with the other less than half. Fish is served in a DISH with the head & tail overhanging so the ends fall onto the table when you try to cut it. Chips are hidden under the fish so you have to hold up the fish to try to cut the chips. Staff don't come to you to ask if you want more water, a sweet, coffee or if your meal was satisfactory. They have NOT been busy on any of these occasions - merely chatting & laughing in the middle! We had to get up to ask for the sweet menu which was brought to us by a very unpleasant waitress who never even returned to ask what we wanted. Again, after a long wait, we had to get up to ask someone else. An almost empty restaurant but were only given two menus for the four of us. When we arrived and were allocated our table, we were told that someone would come to take our order but no-one did so we had to get up to tell the person who'd showed us to our table and she herself then came to take the order. Eating out should be a relaxing, pleasant experience but it certainly is not that, at The Clock Tower! We will not visit again.

This cafe has so much potential but every time I go I’m left disappointed. The food is ok, it’s largely down to the miserable disengaged staff and the weird systems they have in place. I’m convinced that the criteria for a job there is to have a deep seated hatred of people. Both my daughter and I had Quiche with a choice of 2 salads with it. I had the pearl barely salad which was dire. Few tasteless dry bareley things with pomegranates. And the potato and feta not much better. So this cafe you completely go off radar when you have paid up and your food is delivered. We decided we would like a desert but staff no where to be seen. So my daughter goes inside to order. She described the experience as rude. Then the most bizarre thing happened. Our plates were not cleared from the mains. There was lots of plates teapots and cutlery. There was no space left on the table. I’d seen a young lad clearing tables but he completely left ours. As we had waited for someone to take our dessert order for ages they had been there Atleast 1/2 hour after we had finished eating. The waitress came out with the child’s ice cream looking at me as if it’s my fault the table isn’t clear. Stood there . I just said find a space where you can. Plonked ice cream down. She went off I assumed to get someone to clear the table or clear it herself. No she came back holding 2 plates of pudding again with a surly look, my fault again there’s no space. I’m livid at point . although finding the whole situation bizarre . I’d spent over £50 on this meal and deserve to be treated better. Again I said find a space . She did. Unbelievable. The table wasn’t cleared. So I moved the the plates, teapots, glasses , bowls on to the next table. As I walked out there was 3 staff stood by the host stand chatting. I’ll come to garden centre again but never again in the cafe. The signs on the tables as you walk in the cafe say it all. Shouty instruction signage screaming out at you . ‘We are barely tolerating people here so dont put a foot wrong and don’t upset the staff’.

The beans were cold and ‘cheap’ tasting, the mushrooms were also cold and had just been boiled, not fried. The potatoes were inedible, they were soggy and tasted of soil. And the tomato was watery and tasteless. I’m convinced this was left over food from the day before. I felt completely ripped off after paying £11.50 for a breakfast and a coffee, as all I could eat were the sausages and the toast. The plates were never cleared away and we were and no check backs given. It was awful. It’s such a shame as the garden centre is lovely. Don’t waste your money on this cafe!

Have visited the restaurant here several times over the last few months since calling to buy some garden furniture. Previously had been some years since we last ate here as the food was awful but what a transformation. Although quite pricey, there is a very wide selection of hot and cold meals and the quality of the ingredients is excellent. Only complaint is that the meat could sometimes do with cooking a bit more but I suppose the chef has to choose the middle ground to please everyone.

Visited on a Tuesday afternoon. A nicely laid out garden centre and restaurant but the restaurant is self-service. Grab a tray a queue, just like a works canteen, except for the prices charged. Chip Cob, £5,50, a small bottle of Coca Cola £3.15 and shrink -wrapped sandwiches cost over £6. Want a meal, that will cost over £11, a slice of cake cost over £4. For our party it was an expensive fuel stop. Will we call again, what do you think :-)

We’ve been shopping at the garden centre for years, as live locally and love the great selection of products. Decided to try lunch for the first time today and were tempted by the carvery. I selected the cottage pie - the pork and turkey looked yummy but too difficult for me to cut as I currently have an arm fracture. The veg selection was brilliant - carrots, red cabbage, creamed leeks, mash and roast. I had a selection of everything except the roast. It was all delicious and so nice that it was served on piping hot plates, which is a rarity these days. I’m an incredibly fussy eater so was very surprised to enjoy it so much and that everything had such great flavours and was not cold - as most carvery food is. My hubby is a coeliac and was delighted that there was such a great gluten free choice of food - they even provided gf gravy. The cakes - also some gluten free - looked amazing too, so we were just a little disappointed that the carvery portions were so huge that we couldn’t fit one in... never mind, we’ll definitely return to sample more of the great food. Well done to all the staff and thank you to the lovely lady on the till who helped by carrying my tray as I couldn’t one handed.

We visited today for coffee and a cheese scone. The cappuccino coffee was wonderful and the cheese scones delicious!!! The latter as delicious as you will find for many miles around! ( Speaking from vast experience of coffee shop stops over the past year!)

Popped in for a browse and breakfast. What a waste of time, firstly it was very cold throughout...customers in cafe with coats and hats on. Secondly absolutely no customer service in the cafe, stood waiting while 3 members of staff just looked at us. Didn’t bother in the end.

Excellent garden centre with a very nice coffee shop. Had refreshments here as part of our trip there. Lovely range of tea/coffee and excellent tray bakes and cakes. Didn't have any of the hot food but there seemed to be a good selection and it looked great. I am disabled and use a mobility scooter and there was plenty of space to get around.

This Garden Centre is a good choice for a wide variety of plants, gifts, garden equipment, garden furniture, children's toys and books for adults and children and a restaurant with a variety of food options and some out door seating. It is also on one level if you want to take someone who has difficulty walking it is ideal. The toilets are also on the ground floor so accessible.

Had the three item breakfast cob, big cob but even with three items there was not enough filling in for my taste. Pot of tea was fine, service from the staff was okay and the restaurant was spotlessly clean and tidy and they now offer a free Evening Telegraph to their customers.

Hands up if you like (and can remember) filter coffee, that nice aroma of freshly made coffee that is so rare these days and no-one seems to offer it, because they think we all like the 'modern' way of a choice of different types of coffee from a machine, none of which can compare to filter coffee, in my opinion. Well, if filter coffee is your preference (and it certainly is mine), The Clock Tower Restaurant in Derby Garden Centre has it!

Had the minted lamb pie with all vegetables. Thought the gravy looked lumpy but it was fine. All cooked very well and very tasty. The meal was very hot plate even hotter. I enjoyed the meal and surroundings. Only issue is that it’s not a reasonable price anymore. Will not rush to eat a full meal again.

Came here with a friend and our babies to have a spot of lunch while the babies had their lunch. Very difficult to manoeuvre prams around the restaurant. Wheelchair access must be just as tricky. Strange layout too. Two sides to order from which makes no sense if you want something from both sides. You got to queue twice. There’s no table service so you have to get a tray and carry it around and then find a table after you’ve paid. Not possible with a pram. Where do I put the tray?

Food nicely presented and tasty but in my opinion overpriced. Service for coffee and tea is slow (like many other places) because of the "make one at a time" principle. I think a jug of filter coffee would be much quicker. The slowness (and its the process, not the staff) means that meals are often cold when at the table.

The service was so slow that it would have been quicker to go home and prepare it myself. Nearly all the tables were littered with dirty crockery and left over food. It was obvious that they were short staffed but they should have stopped serving cooked food and just carried on with drinks and cakes. It was the most awful experience I have ever had in a restaurant. I will accept that what staff there was did as well as was possible but should not have attempted to do cooked meals. Gordon Bradley

This is a response to a previous reply from The Queens Head. Yes we did opt to keep the Prosecco but we were not aware of the expense As a chef myself I would never have served the food. Even the staff were embarrassed to serve it We had waited so long we ate what was edible but we won’t return anytime soon Buyer beware

High demand shop with good choice of fish at the time. Be prepared to wait at times to be served and for your goods to be prepared as it's a busy shop that maybe should be bigger in the same location.
