Excellent customer service. We went for Sunday lunch and the Clive didn’t disappoint. One of the most tastiest Sunday lunches I’ve had in a very long time. The service was great, the staff friendly and the food amazing. We were recommended to try the pana cotta dessert and it too was full of flavour. Would highly recommend and will be booking again. Large plates and full of taste.

Enjoyed our return visit to The Clive Arms. We received a very warm and friendly welcome from Alison, Emily and all the rest of the staff. The room was excellent and well stocked including a fridge with bottles of water. Enjoyed a evening meal which again was excellent. During our stay we visited the Ludlow Farm Shop and had breakfast at the Ludlow Kitchen. Looking forward to a return visit.

Service very haphazard, and menu from website didn’t match menu in restaurant. Service was friendly but very pub restaurant and we had booked for an occasion, an anniversary. Given a table overlooking car park and skip even though requested a nice table. We asked waiter to change table which they did, but it wasn’t easy. Food was mixed; trout pate excellent, roast beef mixed; rubbish roast potatoes but nice beef and Yorkshire puds, nasty cauliflower cheese: flour not cooked out, no flavour or seasoning and no CHEESE!! Veg seriously overdone and although plates hot, food not hot, so suspect plates were plated up prior to serving and then reheated. Overall 6/10

We stayed for two nights in a clean, well serviced and comfortable ground floor room A couple of points however: As two septuagenarians, the shower above the bath was awkward (Slippery getting out). The coffee percolator was a nice touch, if the plunger had been the right size to work! There were no curtains, only blinds, which did not cut out the flashing security light on the north side and the yard light to the south. The breakfast arrangements at there sister site, The Ludlow KItchen, were disastrous - but this was not the fault of the Clive Arms! Sadly, the Ludlow Kitchen was enough to put us off returning to the Clive Hotel - A pity!

We visited on Christmas Day for Lunch. The turkey was one and half slices of meat with the half slice being brown meat, would prefer not to have been given brown meat, not great. They forgot the braised carrots and winter greens so the lunches were lacking vegetables. We checked with other tables and they also appeared to be missing the same vegetables, it appears the chef forgot to check the dishes leaving the kitchen against what was printed on the Christmas Day menu. Would have expected this mistake to have been picked up by one of the staff on the day as they were going into the kitchen and collecting the dishes. Slightly disappointing.

As part of a Foodie Staycation we dined at The Clive Arms on Friday evening with four others. The menu has a wide choice and is reasonably priced. We drank Hobson's Ale which was delightful. After a superb starter of Crab spaghetti I chose Fried Haddock, chips and mushy peas. Both dishes were cooked to perfection and were extremely tasty. The chips were very large but beautifully cooked. Sadly I could not eat them all there were so many. The fish too was splendind with a light batter and not at all greasy. It would have served as a meal on its own but the accompanying peas and tartare sauce completed the feast. I chose to miss the dessert but the ladies all had the creme brulee and were all well pleased. The superb waitress service by friendly and efficient young ladies enhance the meal. I would recommend this menu to anyone.

We'd not been here for 10 years and it has had a nice makeover since. It was very busy so it was as well we'd booked ahead but we were seated promptly by the charming greeter. I ordered a medium steak and my wife had a beefburger that was enormous. Both were delicious and I had truffle and parmesan fries which I'd not seen anywhere before and were crisp and flavoursome. Brulle and cheescake desserts followed, chased down with de Bortoli Botrytis dessert wine that was a sweet treacly treat - nothing beats a good meal and dessert wine! The prices are highish but fair and well worth it as a birthday treat. In relation to the service I found all the staff engaging interested helpful and friendly - we even discovered an ex-student! I would only offer the mildest criticism of the service that we had to chase items a couple of times that had been forgotten - perhaps a little more concentration needed? But it didn't spoil our enjoyment and we had a great time. Thank you The Clive.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

We travelled to Shropshire to experience the so called foodie trail and after reading the reviews opted to stay at The Clive Arms and to also dine there. The room was spacious and airy and mostly well decorated and the furniture was lovely. The 100 Acres bathroom toiletries were especially impressive. The devil however is in the detail, and the bathroom extractor fan was not working which made for a rather steamy showering experience, and the bath seemed to have had an attempt at a repair to the surrounding tiles which was less than professional. Also, the room had blinds that did not cut out the light at dawn and whilst this did not affect my partner and I, if you like a dark room your luck is out and you will have an early rise in the morning. As for the restaurant, whilst it was at first sight the surroundings were very welcoming we were shown to a table and chairs that looked like they were part of an up cycling scheme that had not been finished i.e. there were rings left by glasses imprinted in the wood of the table. I am used to taxidermy but the cockerel on display looked like it had seen better days and the stags skull and antlers may not be to everyone’s taste. The food was okay, but that’s all, and definitely not value for money in comparison to a very recent visit to a local restaurant to us. I took my time eating my starter (lamb) and when the main course arrived (steak) it appeared that the meal had been left under a heat lamp and whilst the steak was okay, thats about it. There was nothing in particular wrong with the meal but it was underwhelming. The deserts also seemed to have been kept warm somewhere and were again okay but thats about all. My espresso was the worst that I have ever had anywhere and there was a chip in the saucer. Again, it was not going to kill me, but the coffee in McDonald’s is better. My partner had booked The Clive Arms and the restaurant so I was reluctant to be over critical when the member of staff asked if everything was alright and I said to them that everything was okay, and it was. But thats all. The staff were lovely by the way. I would not recommend The Clive Arms for a stay unless their prices were drastically reduced and the same goes for the restaurant. Also, be careful when you exit the car park as the hedge obscures visibility and there is traffic going to the farm shop next door at a rate of knots. I now need a cup of tea to recover as I really dislike registering such a negative review and to be honest this is the first such review that I have written.

I have to say that Emily Humphries and Alison showed fantastic customer service before I say about my review. Nothing was to much trouble and everything was arranged perfectly, so thank you both. I always give honest reviews and did in fact contact the Hotel Manager before I wrote this. The room itself was lovely and I had paid extra for Comfy Lux room, it was as per the pictures on their website, spacious and a lovely room. The only thing which really did let it down was the bathroom, not what I would expect for a 5 star hotel. The toilet seat was fall off, and I mean falling off so had not been checked properly when cleaning it. Do 5 star hotels have shower curtains???? I have never stopped in one that does, so perhaps I am wrong. With Covid at present I have to say I think they are a breading ground for infection, that along with refilable toiletries is not something I was entirely happy about. This is the only thing making this an average rather than an excellent, because I paid for a Sparkling Sunday which included an estate plate from the Ludlow Kitchen and Prosecco, which I have to say were excellent!!

Stayed from Christmas Eve to Boxing Day. The room was wonderful and the staff very accommodating and all would have been fine if we had not eaten any of the food on offer. This review is being written now as a detailed letter was sent to the Clive Arms. In order to give them the opportunity to respond to our grievances but all we received was a standard letter not once addressing any of the issues raised. Breakfast first morning was cold, so we sent it back to then have another cold breakfast served! Christmas lunch at £90 per head you would imagine would be fabulous but it was the complete opposite. Just to say I would have had a much better meal at my local pub! Considering they have the finest produce on their doorstep you would expect the kitchen to create far superior food than we received. To sum up - stay there as a base, don’t eat the breakfast and have dinner at Mortimers in town!!!!

Nice place to stay, but a couple of grumbles. Please tell your staff to stop moaning about being busy. It’s unprofessional and your guests just don’t want to hear it, especially when they are sat in the bar and hear it over and over again. Our room was very spacious and beautifully decorated - my husband had a grumble about the small TV in the room and not being able to see or hear it properly when sat on the bed. No road noise even though it’s situated on the main road into Ludlow.Breakfast wasn’t great. The waiting staff were very slow to greet us and take our order/inform us where everything was. They also didn’t offer us tea for some reason - we had to ask. No toast either which was unusual. The breakfast chef cannot cook eggs - my scrambled eggs were crispy, which is a first, and my husband’s poached eggs were hard. Please teach him how to cook them - it’s really important! The croissants and pain au chocolate had been baked to within an inch of their lives - dark brown is not a good look for pastries. This place could be outstanding if someone managed it properly - we visited the on site cafe the day before and were not impressed there either. Our orders were taken in a large ante room with subtle evening jazz in the background. A pleasant, unrushed atmosphere to start your evening out. Then into the dining area (outside looked inviting but probably a little too adventurous in early October). Our mains were duck and venison. Then onto a blood orange cheesecake and cheese board (choice of 3, 4 or 5 cheeses) to follow. Comfortable pace of service - all with a smile. The Clive (as it used to be) was once our go-to restaurant for a good value, reliable Sunday lunch. Then there was a change of management, and after a disappointing meal a few years ago we hadn't been back. There was a recent refurb and re-launch, so we thought we'd give it another try. Sunday lunch was very good, if not outstanding, and just a bit on the expensive side (especially for the starters and puddings). The new decor is quite pleasant, and we found the service to be efficient and friendly.

We were pleased to find the Clive Arms open and serving food on a Sunday evening as so many places weren't doing food. The ambience was fairly good since the place has obviously undergone a recent and extensive refurbishment. However, the food was a disappointment - small portions, conflicting flavours that did not go together or simply lacking in flavour. I had the wild mushroom tagliatelle. The pasta was a little crunchy on top suggesting it had been re-heated. There was none of the promised truffle flavour. My husband had duck and found the vegetables undercooked and they did not integrate with the meat. The ice creams were pretty flavourless apart from the biscotti which had great lumps of chocolate biscuit in it and my husband's peanut butter parfait had some very extreme unintegrated flavours in it. We conclude the chef just isn't getting it right. The service was good, thought to be constantly asked if everything was alright was a bit annoying.

Having spent a terrific day at the Ludlow food festival we booked for dinner. The star rating was good so were expecting great food to materialise from the chef. Our overall view was disappointing. The mackerel starter was very small comprising two small fingers of fish with salad and beetroot garnish. At £8 this a joke. The scallops had been cut on half and over seasoned whilst the pig cheek was dry rather than being soft and tender. The main courses were generally quite small and left one wanting for a little more. Bread was not offered with the starter which added to ones frustration generally.

The pub itself is airy bright and welcoming and you certainly can not fault the ambience. The luncheon menu is I think expensive and we opted for the bar snacks as we wanted something light. I had crispy pork with piccalilli which was not as I had imagined it to be (3 pork balls with a small amount of piccalilli sauce) my friend I think had the better option of a ham sandwich which was quite generous with the thickly cut ham but the portion of chips was poor for the price. I think it is a shame that they do not put as much effort into the food as they did the interior. However the nice thing was the pub is dog friendly

A bit American in style with very good quality furniture inside and out. The acoustics could do with some attention. A new menu seems to have been designed to appeal to most people and its the same with the wine list. Nothing to offend anyone. Our starters of courgette flower and a pigs cheeks were fine but the heirloom tomato was like a deconstructed gazpacho not great. Our mains a splendid fish and chips, rump and neck of lamb and a sirloin steak were fine and tasty. Our choice of the Quara estate Malbec was a mistake as this 2018 wine is a bit thin and insipid. A nice meal if you like corporate dining. No atmosphere at all and staff that would probably rather be somewhere else. It would be nice to see someone in charge and a jolly team to serve. At about £50 a head I like a little more than a feeding station however well put together.

My rating would have been 5 if not for a mistake in the kitchen. I ordered the Haddock Sandwich without Tartar Sauce, it came with. Other than that the food was lovely, the surroundings are smart and very clean, service was excellent. Shame about the slip up, but we will be back. The restaurant didn't charge for my Haddock.

I have eaten here three times in the last four months, always at lunch time and always in the bar area because I had my dog with me. I have no idea if the fine dining restaurant is any good and I have only ever ordered a sirloin steak and all I can say is that on all three occasions I was presented with a wonderful, juicy perfectly cooked steak. A perfect combination of well sourced meat cooked exactly as I had asked for it to be cooked.

The highs - the duck pate and the pork crisp were both delicious. I was going to have the crab and scallop ravioli but changed to the pork and am glad I did as I tried my husband’s. It was bland and I’m lucky that he let me try it as there was only 1 piece of ravioli! I could not taste either of the ingredients and this was covered in a greasy liquid which was disappointing. I suggested putting some salt on. This did not improve it. We both had the lamb for main. The lamb was flavourless. Again, a lack of seasoning during cooking. As this restaurant is linked to a farm shop I was expecting the lamb to be delicious. I don’t expect to have to add a large amount of salt. I am aware that some chefs choose not to use seasoning during cooking but I think you’ll find all the best chefs do. The service was a bit haphazard but the Manager was very pleasant. I can see from previous posts that you have said that you’ve had overwhelming praise regarding the ravioli. Really? Are you sure that wasn’t general praise? For the amount you charge for that dish I think you need to look at it again. The decor was very nice.

Clearly, a great deal of time, money and imagination have been invested in the interior design and the facilities, which are all very pleasant. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for the food. Four of us ate here on a Saturday evening and we all had three courses. For starters, the duck liver parfait was fantastic, as was the crispy pork slice. The crab and scallop ravioli -which consisted of a single piece of overlooked pasta, filled with what could well have been thin air, swimming in a thin, tasteless, greasy soup - was shockingly bad. It was served with a knife and fork, which were both entirely unfit for purpose. A straw would have been the most appropriate item by which to eat this dish but we settled for some bread (that we had to ask for and were subsequently charged for ) and a spoon (which we also had to ask for). The manager, who was charming and helpful, informed us that this was one of their most popular dishes. I very much doubt this relates to repeat orders. For main courses, the lamb, whilst cooked and presented impeccably, was bland and unmemorable. Both the stone bass and the ham hock were tastier but nothing special. The puddings were similarly mediocre. The honey tart looked good but was tasteless. The two miniature scoops of ice cream were served melted. The bread and butter pudding was better but not fantastic and the cheese was excellent. The wine was good value. Overall then, this place ultimately falls well short of expectations.

Lovely weekend stay at the Clive. Our room was very spacious and perfect for our 6 month old. Plenty of space for our travel cot and the bed was very comfy. Our highlight was the breakfast, it was amazing! Also a lovely farm shop just around the corner. Will definitely be returning.

My first time here. Beautifully flavoursome beef, lots of vegetables cooked to perfection (ie not boiled to soft mush) light fluffy Yorkshire pud. Didn’t have a starter and didn’t have room for a dessert. The beef apparently came from the Plymouth estate over the road and is available in the LFC next door. We’re spoilt for choice for good Sunday lunches in Ludlow, the Queens is very good, as is the Cliffe. If the Clive is consistently this good then they’re right up there too.

Visited The Clive Arms recently and had a great Sunday lunch. Booked in advance for a table of eight and really appreciated the square table we were seated at. Often at restaurants you have to make do with a long table, leaving some people out of the conversation. The rooms were laid out nicely and staff were very polite. We choose a mixture of traditional Roasts and dishes such as Smoked Salmon salad and a big Burger!

Decided to pop into The Clive today (28/10) on the off chance of Sunday lunch, not knowing if it would be fully booked or not. Arrived at 13.30 and were told that we could not have a table until 14.30 but they would be happy to book us a table for then. As we were in no rush we took that option which gave us plenty of time to wander around (and spend too much money in!) the farm shop next door.

We took an elderly friend to the Ludlow Kitchen only to find that they were not serving food today and were told by the staff to go to The Clive. We were advised that there would be a short wait for food order which in the end turned out to be 35minutes, even though we only had two bowls of soup and a sandwich. Hard to believe that a snack lunch could be taking this long, especially as it did not appear to be very busy. To worsen our experience, the soup was terribly salty and almost inedible. My husband is diabetic and HAD to eat something, sending it back and waiting a further half hour was out of the question. The staff were friendly enough but very inattentive. It is safe to say that we will NOT be calling in at The Clive again.

We were out with friends celebrating my wife's recent birthday, our friends had booked a table at The Clive. There was a very friendly and warm greeting from the staff, who showed us to our table in the spacious dining room. The choices on the menu were interesting, my wife went for the braun, which she enjoyed. I had the black pudding, which although it did not look very much was surprisingly filling and very tasty. All four of us had the beef Stroganoff, nicely presented and very good. We skipped dessert! This was washed down with a bottle of Portuguese Next Station. Service was friendly and leisurely, the restaurant was quite busy. We all enjoyed the meal and the price was reasonable.

We have eaten here many times over the years, however after a disappointing meal a year or so ago where they didn't have a roast on the menu during sunday lunch, we decided to give a second chance for sunday lunch last week- and this was a mistake. The roast I cooked last night because I still fancied one was better- and that included Aunt Bessies frozen Yorkies (being a weeknight).

Eat here two nights with same menu -- a little surprising as the restaurant caters in part for hotel guests. The meals were very pleasant and nicely presented, but there was only on fish dish and only one vegetarian dish available -- the advertised sample menu was misleading in this respect. The whole was reasonably priced. Service was friendly, but on the slow side and a little chaotic.
