Excellent choice on a comprehensive menu. Food delivered to table courteously, professionally and promptly by attentive and helpful staff. Atmosphere ideal for relaxed (formal or informal) evening. Not good Indian food. My Passanda was just pieces of chicken in a tasteless cornflour sauce! The rest of the dishes were also pretty dull and tasted the same as each other!I told the waiter that I was disappointed with my Passanda and he was so rude. It was like a scene from Fawltey Towers!! Would not recommend this resturant. There are much better ones around Norwich.

This must be one of the best Indian restaurants in Norwich, the food was very very good and the service was good too. We thought there were 'different' things on the menu to the usual things we've found in Indian restaurants. Well worth a visit.

This used to be arguably the top indian in norwich, however over recent meals there we have noticed an increase in prices and a drop off in ingredients. The usual trick of bulking with onions is prevalent. Actual amounts of key ingredients seem less. For two mains two naan and three sides plus a couple of pints it came to £55 , with tip £60. Frankly that is too much. The food used to be special but it has lost its edge so average food - acceptable but average nonetheless. However the price makes it now overall poor value. Very sad to be making this review.

Went here a few nights ago with a friend. I'm really not a curry person... well so I thought! My friend ordered his curry and I had a korma but we shared each others food and it was delicious. I've always avoided indian food as I don't like spiciness too much but I didn't realise how diverse the food is. I had a great dinner here and I would reccomend it to everyone, not too expensive and in a good location. Would love to come for lunch sometime.I really really reccomend it there. The staff are very nice and there is a great welcoming atmosphere

Been here many times before and always been very good.Sadly on this occasion we had to send our Korma back as the chicken was not cooked properly -pink inside. When we received the bill the korma was still on there and the manager expected us to pay for it despite us not eating it and sending it back. I explained I wasn't prepared to pay for raw chicken the manager replied it was wasn't raw because I tried it?! What kind of response was that?! He reluctantly took it off the bill.... Needless to say he won't be back!

A friend took us here and it was delish! We didn't order too much and found the portion sizes excellent to fill our appetites. We had a couple of popadams, but skipped on the starters and went straight for the mains. A chicken bhuna, a chicken jalfrezi and a chana masala, rice, a bit of naan, and of course beers and we were good to go! It was a good setting to learn (or not) the rules of cricket. The dishes were spicy, but not over the top. Nice quiet atmosphere. I found two websites: bengalclippernorwich.com and theclipper.org (take away menu).

If ever I want an Indian in Norwich I ALWAYS come here !.... why you may say when there are many Indian restaurants and takeouts in such a big city - the answer is simple -having ordered here over half a dozen times now I have never been disappointed with the quality or the size of the food. It is not the cheapest of restaurants, however as I have said on previous reviews the quality surpasses the price, and even then its not that expensive !Usually I have a mixed starter, Pakora or Samosa and a main couse of Chicken Tikka Mossala with special rice and Garlic Naan, with a Pappadom or three and a large onion salad - totally nom nom nom... and the staff always give me a free beer whilst I am waiting for my take out ... Went there unexpectedly one evening with a friend as we were passing by and had been recommended before. Very welcoming and managed to seat us at 8:00 on a Saturday without a booking. Between the two of us we had a main and rice each, plus a side each as well. I have a Dhansak every time I go for an Indian and was one of the best I have ever had. Unfortunately was slightly on the small size. The rice portion was also very small and relatively expensive, very glad we had one each.Very short wait for a Saturday night despite being quite busy, great service and very tasty food. Just slightly expensive for small portions. Would like to try again simply for the Dhansak and maybe have a starter and/or another side.

Nice enough and worth going there to eat but not outstanding. Maybe other dishes were !However service was excellent and the staff and manger (quite a character) were attentive and always on hand to make your dinning and pleasant experience. Reviews for the new restaurant seemed promising though so we booked a table for six on a Saturday night. The decor has been completely revamped and modernised and it seems more spacious. Service was good , friendly and prompt and the food was great. I tried a new side dish of pumpkin, which was lovely and spicy alomgsifde my old favourites Sag Aloo and Chana Masala. Last Saturday, a wet and windy day, we decided to visit Norwich and do a bit of Christmas shopping. On a previous visit last year, we stumbled across The Clipper by chance and had lunch there. Based upon this experience, we made a beeline for this establishment with a view to having a leisurely meal this time. This turned out to be not just a Saturday lunch but much more of a dining experience. We walked through the door just as the "open" sign was displayed and were given a very warm welcome by our hosts. We were escorted to our table and given plenty of time to see just what delights were on offer. The waiter brought drinks and poppadoms to nibble on while we made our choices. After a short period of time the waiter returned to take our orders and he also gave excellent advice on what to have and why to have it. He was never pushy and his advice was very welcome. I like my curries very hot and 99% of the time I order a robust vindaloo. This is exactly what I did on this occasion but the waiter advised me to try the lamb naga "not for heat but for the flavour". I took a deep breath and followed his advice. In the mean time my partner ordered chicken vindaloo and an assortment of side dishes to share. When our food arrived it was beautifully presented and a real joy to behold. My naga turned out to be one of the best curries that I have ever had and my partner also commented that she preferred my naga to her vindaloo! We sat and enjoyed a truly great meal that could not be faulted in any way. One thing that really does stick in our minds was the obvious delight that the staff had in knowing that they got everything spot on for us. We cannot wait to visit again and are contemplating making the 80 mile round trip just to dine here one evening. Now, if that doesn't say it all, then I don't know what does. Thank you guys, you made our day. See you soon.

We didn't actually eat in - we ordered a takeaway. The website said that you would receive a bottle of wine if you spent £25 - unfortunately we didn't receive this - possibly just an oversight? We ordered a mixed meat starter which was fine - the lamb tikka was quite tender which is good. The sheek kebab looked a little bit unappetising, but tasted fine. We ordered a balti and chicken shobji, both dishes tasted OK, but were quite watery with a lot of oil. We also had side dishes: begun bhaji and aloo baigan - the aubergine in both tasted quite bitter and could've done with being cooked a little longer to soften and lose the bitterness. Of the two, I preferred the aloo baigan - it had more flavour and a better texture. The staff were really lovely, and I would be keen to visit the restaurant for that reason. The food was average, but often a takeaway isn't as representative as actually eating in the restaurant.

I visited here recently based on a recommendation from somebody local to Norwich. We parked in a nearby open air car park and walked down to the restaurant. The service was friendly and we were seated near the window. We each had a starter and main course. I had the mixed kebab - this was probably the best mixed kebab starter I have ever had at an Indian!! My colleagues had a range of starters that were all well presented and enjoyed. The mains were equally good. The portions were generous and unfortunately we left some as we were so full up! The only thing that wasn't fully to my personal taste is that there were some sesame seeds (not many) on the plain naan. These aren't my favourite & hadn't come across this on a naan before. I could pick these off as they were few in number. It was reasonably quiet when we dined here but it was early on a weekday evening.

Norwich on a Monday night is not ideal as a place to eat. A lot of places were closed and we didn't want to go to a chain restaurant. Having found a place to park we came across this establishment. In some ways it is a stereotypical Indian or Bengali restaurant in a style you can find everywhere. We did however find the staff warm and friendly and the menu offered the sort of choices we expected. It was not busy but there were three or four other tables occupied whilst we were there and it seemed to us that the relatively nearby University of East Anglia must provide a lot of customers as academic conversations were heard all around us.We had poppadums, fishcakes, chicken tikka, pilau rice, spinach, lamb biryani Nan bread and drinks. It was all well presented and very enjoyable. I wouldn't travel to Norwich to eat there but as a local place I would visit again

My infrequent visits to Norwich always leave me admiring this fine city and having just got out of the car after a four hour journey from many miles to the west, The Bengal Clipper was a welcome sight as it hove into view on St Benedicts Street. I had the Tilapia Masala which can only be described in a Michael Winner fashion as "historic" - the dish wasn't overly spicy but full of subtle flavour and was complemented by an almost nutty tarka dahl. The restaurant is situated in a quiet street with a number of other restaurants and there are a limited number of parking spaces in the street. The staff are very friendly and helpful and I was very glad to see that there try and spread diners around the restaurant rather than trying to sit them all together - one of my pet hates!I started with the tandoori mix platter which had good flavours with tender meat. For a main course I had lamb Xacuti (lamb with fennel, garlic, ginger & spices) which was very tasty but could have done with a bit more heat as it was described as medium hot on the menu. My partner had a very good tilapia dish which is not something you usually see in an Indian restaurant.

My partner is fussy. No mushrooms, no peppers... I could go on. We found the food excellent; very varied for vegetarians, no filler veg like carrots and potatoes, instead other veg like beans (both green & kidney, chick peas). We were struggling to find somewhere open on New year's day & really landed on our feet.

I've been to this restaurant on several occasions and have always left a satisfied customer. The restaurant itself has a clean, contemporary appearance, and it's usually always possible to get a table as its located slightly out of the city centre.Every time I've visited the staff have been jolly and polite and the food is always very tasty, nicely presented and offers great value for money.Overall I'd say this is my favourite Indian in the city!

clean , good food, original tastes, timely service. comfortably one of the top 3 indians in norwich. it's a little away from other restaurants and maybe this is why attendance is a little light. the portions are not huge but big enough. prices are in line and it's immaculate inside. we have eaten here several times and it's consistently good

Muy buena comida. La basura inglesa no genérica se sirve en cualquier otro restaurante "indio" o para llevar en Norwich. ¡Bien hecho muchachos!

Had the Vindaloo and it was absolutely delicious. Usually about the limit of what I can handle but this was one of the most pleasant examples of one I've ever eaten. Obviously a very spicy curry, but if you want to try one for the first time then Shah Zahan is the place to get one! The staff at the counter gave the place a good vibe too :)

Always a great evening out. Lovely food and they always seem to treat us to complementary drinks on the house. Very nice people.

Wow, this meal was so delicious, thank you! I ordered the vegetable Pathia (sweet and sour), which balanced really well with the (plain) boiled rice. Alongside a garlic naan, with poppadums & mango/lime pickle chutneys which was all perfect. The flavours were amazing, and I feel very satisfied.
