Masala garden in Norwich

Sorry to say but this was a disappointing experience. When we arrived there was no vegetarian option, though it had been specifically ordered in advance. It was eventually produced and tasted ok. The poppadoms were bendy, the barjhis were hard, and I had stomach ache for two days afterwards.

As soon as we got in there was a drunk guy sat at the bar asking us if we were ok. I've no idea if he worked there. The waitress was nice enough. Sat us down and took our order for Sunday lunch (roast beef and veggie option ). Took about 20 minutes which was fine . If they'd put music on for atmosphere we wouldn't have heard the food being microwaved. When it came there was an anemic pile of peas cabbage and carrots to share. There was stale potatoes and plenty of days old roast beef microwaved within an inch of it's life. Tougher than a tramp's instep but probably not as tasty. The veggie option? An actual pastie. I'm not even joking. 15 quid each. The gravy was lovely mind. If the place gets knocked down, then rebuilt with a Michelin star rated chef knocking out world beating scran served by actual angels I'd still never set foot in the place again. It was absolute next level rank.

The Indian food here is absolutely amazing! Honestly, for the quality you get, it feels like such a bargain. As someone who’s Asian, I can say that some of the dishes have just the right level of spice, which I really appreciate. Super satisfied with the whole experience. The girls working there are hands-on, attentive, and very professional. I’d definitely come back again—highly recommended!

Recently had an amazing meal here. The lamb meat curry was the best I’ve had, better than brick lane. Very hot, lamb was temder, the heat was pretty intense but as a fresh chilli curry should be it was gone again in 10 minutes after eating. The whole meal was 10/10. Amazing food & service!

Very slow service. Not very good communication from workers. Orded 2 teas which took far to long to arrive as they ran out of milk and had to go get some. Can't comment on the food but the couple we spoke to said it was poor quality and couldn't recommend. Cheap pints and offers outside garden seating.

Absolutely disgusting! Order messed up . Pick up ! Floating in water batch cooked ping ping . 50 quid straight in the bin . Service with kids , socks and sliders. Never again. Avoid. Should be closed down.

So sad to see what’s become of this once fantastic restaurant. Poor service - only two, seemingly inexperienced staff, serving drinks, food, taking orders and sorting take aways. Drinks took ages and came to the table one at a time. Poppadums arrived after 40 mins and the chutney tray followed later. Other diners left after a drink as the waiting was just awful. The food was okay, but took so long and didn’t all arrive together. No offers of more drinks as we sat waiting, and clearing the table between starters and mains doesn’t seem to happen. The restaurant was quieter towards the end of our meal but the staff didn't check in, just stood at the bar area. The restaurant is tired, men’s toilets out of service, floor so uneven I tripped twice while walking to the table. It was also cold, overall feels very tired and the lights kept going out as we ate. It was so bad it verged on funny, like something from a comedy sketch. We were once regulars but won’t be returning.

Okay Indian restaurant for cheap curry! Decent portion sizes, unlikely to return due to other Indian restaurants surpassing the food quality, presentation and dining experience! If was on the area and fancied curry I’d probably just order as takeaway. (Which I think they prioritise) Ordered chicken madras, mushroom rice and garlic naan bread (or nan bread as the restaurant call it) all okay but missing something special, tasty but not delicious!

Ordered 2 biriani takeaways this evening. Menu says it comes with vegetable curry. No curry was included so had to eat a dry rice dish as would have taken too long to get the missing items from the restaurant and also what we had would have been stone cold by the time we got back. Had to heat up a jar of curry sauce from the cupboard to make it edible…

Live locally and thought about visiting. Checked out the food hygiene rating and decided not to. To achieve a 1 star rating it must be pretty terrible

absolutely terrible restaurant stunk of cannabis throughout the whole building the food was cooked at the wrong temperatures if i could rate it lower than 0 i would. DO NOT EAT HERE!!!!!!

We visited with a friend on Sunday night when the deal is 20% discount for cash.. we found the service lacklustre, disinterested and slow. After ordering we asked for all the dishes to be served at the same time, we received half and after about 15 minutes asked where the rest was, waiter had to get a print out of our bill, then went to the kitchen. During this time at least four takeaway orders went out. The food was ok but obviously at various temperatures. There was no rapport between the staff and the diners and we had to ask for the table to be cleared and suggested that the long delay might deserve a complimentary pudding but were told abruptly that” we don’t serve puddings”. To pay you have to go to the till, no bill is presented at the table such is the level of disinterest, seeing the bill I asked if the 20% had been deducted and was told that only applied to takeaways. We went outside with the waiter and pointed out the sign that clearly said takeaways and dine in and were told that the sign was wrong! We then met some other customers leaving and they confirmed that they did receive the discount so back in we went and were paid our dues. This had all the odour of a scam by the staff though obviously it Would be difficult to prove. We will not darken their doors again and I suggest that you do follow our lead. In addition to that the place has a hygiene rating of one.

I placed a huge order for 21 people and Nick was extremely helpful and accommodating. He even added some extra dishes to our order which we fancied trying. Nick did a fantastic job! The food was ready on time, beautifully cooked and thoroughly delicious. Thank you for making our family gathering a huge success, everyone was very happy with their meal. We will be ordering again!

First time of having eating from an Indian restaurant / takeaway in years and this one did not disappoint

I have delayed this review until now to give a genuinely honest appraisal. We have visited 3 times. 2 times eat in and one a takeaway. We booked a table for the first time in September 2023 and then saw the food hygiene rating and recent reviews that were frankly not good. However, our visit was post their inspection and I cannot speak highly enough of the venue. On arrival it was spotlessly clean, the staff were attentive and more importantly the food was fabulous. The same experience in October 2023. We have just had a takeaway and again a great experience. Food on time and really tasty, lovely staff. I definitely recommend this restaurant

Myself, son, sister and partner had a table booked at masala garden for a get together meal until we saw the hygiene rating which is 1*! How disgusting, our booking was immediately cancelled and we will never be visiting this restaurant. Check your food hygiene rating before attending a booking.

Staff where very polite, service was ok. Starter was chicken pakora which had very thick gloopy batter. Main meal improved but bit disappointed 😞 sorry

Went on the off chance. Have heard good reports of the restaurant, and decided to give it a go. Received a warm welcome, and the food was freshly cooked. Very clean restaurant, and staff very attentive. Will certainly be returning!!!

Super good food with great flavours, amazing place!

Pre ordered our takeaway for 18.00hrs. I arrived a few minutes early. Staff were very polite and friendly, food was ready on time. We thoroughly enjoyed everything we ordered. Will be using again.

We had a really delicious takeaway and the portions are very good. The owner is very friendly and is planning to enlarge the kitchen and add a wider range of bottled beers

I ordered my takeaway food online to be collected at 8:30pm. I arrived on time and then waiter went to see if it was ready. He then came back and said it would be a few minutes. I then waited and waited…. No one came to apologise and explain there was a delay. 25 mins later the food arrived. Although the food was nice the service needs to improve.

My family and I waited over an hour for any sort of food to be served and when it was served it was cold bland and sloppy and for a korma it was spicy? we was not happy with paying the extortionate prices but we had to but we will never be returning untill they have a higher gov.uk food rating higher than 2 and i would warn anyone who is tempted to go else where

We ordered a take away at 6.00pm and told it would be ready for collection at 7.30pm. Upon arrival, we were met with many other customers many of whom had already been waiting for an hour for their food. After realising this may also be the case for us, we asked if we could see the manager. This was promised, but they never appeared. There were no offers of apology or any kind of explanation. When a suggestion was made that they could at least provide the waiting customers with a drink, this was not even acknowledged. Empty promises that the food would be "five minutes" yet the food never materialised! In the end, after waiting over an hour, we gave up and left. Terrible service - we will not be returning.

Had a table booked. Walked in to a bar area full of pretty angry looking people waiting for takeaways. Most people had been waiting over an hour for their orders. 2 young lads getting lots of complaints. ( I felt really sorry for them) No other visible staff. Waited 20 minutes. Nobody came to seat us. We left and went to The Raj in loddon. Fantastic food and service there.

Looking forward to a birthday curry so ordered over the phone at 5.20 at which point I was told it would be an hour and a half (yes really!). I duly arrived to collect my order at 6.50 and was greeted by a heaving bar area. One group were seated to their table but that left at least 11 people waiting for food, myself included. When asked how long their orders would be the bar staff repeatedly told the customer 5mins. Not once was this true.... The bar staff were keen to take payment when I arrived to collect my order but beyond that the customer service was shocking.... During my wait, getting a little anxious that my husband was waiting at home also likely to be getting worried about what was taking so long, I tried to call and WhatsApp him. Oh dear, no signal. At around 7.40 when another long suffering customer had finally received his order, he returned to the bar to inform me that he had bumped my car. Great! I shouldn't have been there at time! At around 8.15 my husband and step daughter turned up to find out what was going on as they had tried to call the restaurant only to find out the phone had been taken off the hook. Finally, 3hrs after ordering, I was presented with my bounty. The shine and anticipation of a lovely meal having long since worn off. Stressed due to knowing family would be worrying and not able to contact them, having my car bumped and being lied to as to the likely wait for food. Just be honest with customers. At what point during the 3 hours between ordering and finally receiving my food did my order actually reach the kitchen? I'm guessing at some point whilst I was in the bar.... Very disappointed. Will not be returning

Horrendous night. I wouldn't even give this 1 star if I could as that implies I got some level of service whilst I was there. Booked a table in advance for 7pm, took 45 minutes to have our drinks and food order taken. We waited until 9pm and our food still hadn't arrived, instead they prioritised all the takeaway orders rather than anyone in the restaurant. Asked for the Manager repeatedly, but they refused to come out and see the many frustrated tables, instead let the poor front of house team take everyone's complaints. After 2+ hours of waiting, we eventually threw in the towel and left to go and grab food elsewhere, not exactly how we intended to spend the evening. If you fancy a curry served anytime vaguely near when you got to your table, I'd look elsewhere.... If you do end up going, McDonald' s at Gillingham is open late just FYI.

The food was excellent, complements to the chef! As my dad is turning 70, we want to get out more with the family and this was the perfect decision made by him. We have ordered a few takeaways which have all been superb and finally found an occasion to come and sit in with the whole family. We brought our own birthday cake with us, the young staff were very polite, cooperative and happy to help us with the cake. Presentation of the food was extremely appetizing making us all love the food even more! The service and food exceeded our expectations, would definitely come again and would highly recommend.

We have been to this restaurant several times before and always had extremely good service and food , but this time, it was a very different experience we waited over 2hours for our starters , it was really cold in the restaurant, there was only one other table in the restaurant, there were 3 people waiting on the tables, the staff did not seem trained or bothered about the customers in the restaurant, drinks were delivered to the table one at a time and one drink had to be returned due to a dirty glass, the cutlery on the table was not clean, when the food eventually arrived it was only ‘warm’ not hot, the rice had been keep warm under a hot lamp or in the oven so was dried out, all in all it was a very disappointing experience and we will not be returning.

The food was superb - and probably the best Indian meal experience for a few years. The restaurant itself was very clean and was pleasantly warm for this time of year. The staff were amiable and polite and the service was attentive. It all made for an enjoyable evening and was an experience we will repeat. The food is quite exceptional given the restaurant is situated in a small Norfolk village - a surprising gem.

Hadn’t visited Masala Gardens for a while and I must say not much has changed. The food is still good with plenty of choice but the service is very hit and miss. The 2 young lads do their best but there’s no consistency. Seems there’s no system on who is serving who?? We received our main course after a short wait and enjoyed our food. But no one came and asked if everything was ok or if we needed anything else. Once finished, sat for quite a while with dirty plates in front of us before they were cleared. Normally in most restaurants this is the point that you get asked if you would like desserts or coffee etc. But the plates were just cleared and we were left. Meanwhile I could see other tables being served with puddings and coffee, yet we were being ignored?? . We sat talking for a further 40mins without anyone coming to our table. Eventually when someone did we just asked for the bill as we wanted to go by this point!! And talking of the bill………. Be warned if you don’t drink!! I had to query the price of my Lime & Soda ( I was driving) £4, yes £4 !! This was more expensive than my friends red Wine £3:85. The young lad said it was the right price. I couldn’t believe it. When I next visit I’ll make sure I either drink or ask for water ( checking they don’t charge for that first!) Like I first said, Food is good but service needs more consistency and drink prices need reviewing.

Second time here with the martial arts clan. Seventeen of us this time. Great to see old faces again. Could do with some background music to make the evening better.

If you know your Indian food this is the best place outside of Brick Lane I have been to fantastic food, reasonably priced drinks. Very young team of waiting staff so be patient they are delightful but the food is WONDERFUL.

Had a lovely curry last night service was excellent much better than my previous visit.

Wasn't going to come back here as previously food was too hot to enjoy.so glad we did! We knew as soon as we tasted the food that something was different.Under new management new cooks and food is fantastic!! Full of flavour and perfect.

Just back from a meal at Masala Garden. Cannot fault the food, but the service leaves a lot to be desired. When new cutlery is requested, I would expect it to be placed on the table and not tossed. Staff appear to be walking around aimlessly. Some guidance from a senior member of staff would go a long way.

Hoenstly the best Indian I've had in months. Heard a bunch of my friends talk about how good it is and was not disappointed. Friendly staff and welcoming/Clean environment. Food was cheap and absolutely excellent in taste. Had to travel 15 minutes to pick it up as they didn't deliver to where I lived and would happily drive all the way back for an Indian every day of the week over what's available locally!

We had a meal here on the 1/6/22 & it's the worst curry we've ever had. We waited over an hour for the food (& they weren't even that busy) when it arrived it was cold & when we told the waiter he stuck his finger in our food to test it & took it away, they then nuked it in the microwave & brought the same food back even though the waiter had had his finger in it. It was still only luke warm & the microwave had overcooked it. We complained to the manager & he said what else am I supposed to do to with it to heat it up, to which we suggested cooking the food fresh again, but he refused so we said we were leaving as were still hungry. We were then presented with the bill in full & asked to have cost of the food we hadn't eaten removed but he refused to adjust & said if you don't like the food then don't cone back. Don't waste your money, the food & service were awful & left a lot to be desired!

Came to this restaurant on the Wednesday evening for the banquet, it was amazing. The food was so nice and fresh. The waiters were really nice and friendly. Would highly recommend this restaurant. They are cash only for some reason, thankfully had enough between us.

We vistited the restaurant tonight at 5.20pm waited 1.5 hours before we received any food, no apologies or acknowledgment. Food was very average - we have been coming to this restaurant for a few years and the service has always been slow but we are normally rewarded with fantastic food. The priority here is definitely the takeaway service and not the customers sitting in the restaurant.

Lovely food as always but very different experience this evening. We havnt been here since before lockdown. On arrival only one other table occupied who left shortly after. No music in dining hall. We waited an hour for our food to come out. Asked for a napkin but told they didnt have and, luckily I had some McDonalds ones in my bag. Appeared to be short staffed as only 2 girls waitressing and very quiet in kitchen. Plates were cleared but were not asked if we'd like anything else or another drink. Finally spotted a member of staff in the empty dining hall to ask for bill but didnt approach us for payment so we made our way to front desk to pay on way out. No chocolates with bill!

Pretty average curry - very pale and flavourless dhal, my lamb Palak lacked depth and body. Just a bit disappointing all round really.

Excellent, so why 4 stars? Service was a little slow with a reasonably long wait for drinks to arrive, and a longer wait, just over an hour, until food appeared. However, the wait was worth it as a variety of dishes was beautifully presented and enjoyed by all of us. On paying the bill and asking how the tip was divided, I was informed that behind the scene workers had it and that it was not divided up between all staff members. I was extremely surprised at this and the tip of around fourteen percent was withdrawn. Front of desk staff were very good indeed, looked smart, attentive and one of the reasons people return to an establishment like this. It is my view that management should reconsider their tipping procedures. Having said this we will definitely return, and highly recommend the place; with this knowledge it is naturally up to the individual if tips are left.

Do not go here if you want to be fed in reasonable time. 2 HOURS we waited. Covid or not, that is unacceptable.

Went in recently...place was almost empty which is a shame, although still very popular for takeaways, portion sizes appear to have reduced though, but as most of us over eat , that's good. Current vat reductions are not being passed on

My son and I were staying in the area with family so thought we would give Masala Garden a try, I now wish I had stayed in and cooked. Ordered food on line, told to collect 45 minutes. Always smells great as we walk past, nice setting inside. Food is very good and flavoursome, will make many returns. Visited on a Saturday evening without prior booking so unsure if they were going to have room, but were very accommodating.

Would give 5 stars for the waiters & waitresses but was let down by the manager,had a table booked for half 7 didnt get served our food untill 8:50,staff were trying to help as much as possible. Complained 2 times & manager just had ago at staff as if it was their fault when it wasn't they were very all apologetic. Staff need to be on alot more money for what they put up with & owner seems very money grabbing & not bothered about customers demands.

No puedo entender las malas críticas, usamos la comida para llevar al menos una vez al mes y nunca hemos tenido que esperar más de 30 minutos para recoger la comida.

Definitely the one of the best indian I've ever had, would go again.

we as a family had been craving a good Indian meal since the start of lock down. Arrived at masala garden and was greeted by friendly and polite young staff and seated to the table placed our order complimentary popadoms ect arrived at the table but were soggy and tasteless. an hour and ten minutes later our mains still haven’t arrived complained to the manager who wasn’t very sympathetic we left very disgruntled won’t be going back.

Always good food here, everything freshly cooked

We had booked a table for 6.30 but arrived early, no problem, were seated straight away. Were welcomed by the manager and a young lad. The restaurant has completely been re-decorated as well as great thought has been taken so that people are spaced with perspex dividers and less tables. Even though it was busy with take away orders we still had a good service. The waiting staff were young, but professional, helpful and friendly. The food was well cooked with great flavours of herbs and spices. All in all we had a good experience. Must go again. Would recommend the restaurant to friends and family.

I booked a collection on line at 6.10pm last saturday. I then rang and was told that it would be a 40 minute wait, I arrived at 7.0pm and it was 8.20pm before I collected my order.There were other people in the same position. To compound it the lamb dish was tough and most of it was thrown away. Completely unacceptable. Only 2 weeks previously I had placed a large order and it had been given to someone else, luckily they were still in the car park and the order was rescued. Although it is my only local restaurant I shall not be visiting again .

This is my first review on Trip Advisor, I was so annoyed with the takeaway service on Saturday evening felt I had to write this review to warn others, thought I would let anyone who was thinking of ordering a takeaway on a Saturday evening don’t if you want to eat it the same night as ordering within 3 hours.I ordered a takeaway at 6pm, was told it would be an hour and twenty minutes, which I was prepared for as the food is usually very good, when I arrived at 7.20, there were several people waiting in the car park, I went in to pay and asked how long the delay was, was told about 10 minutes, an hour and a quarter later my family meal was ready, but by the time I got home, the rest of the family had got fed up with waiting and had already eaten, so no one really felt like eating as it was too late.So take with a pinch of salt whatever time you are told your meal will be ready, as it won’t be!I suggested that they could as a gesture of goodwill, as those waiting in the carpark were getting very frustrated like me, offer everyone who had been waiting for over an hour a drink, but that suggestion fell on deaf ears, I won’t be using this restaurant again, will be going back to The Merchants of Spice in Thorpe, an extra 15 minutes away, but have always had my meal ready to collect on time and able to eat the same evening as the meal was ordered.
