Been in to The Clifton a few times when popping into town. The place is looking great and Chris the new landlord has really turned the place round and it’s has a great atmospher. A new chef started this weekend so thought we would try their Carvery. Was pleasantly surprised, their first day and it was gorgeous! If you are in town it’s definitely worth popping in for a true homemade roast. Large portion and lots to choose from. Friendly staff and plenty of parking.

Since Chris has taken over this has become a proper pub with all the regulars coming out of the woodwork. Lovely 😍 atmosphere and glad to be back at my old local. 😀 Lovely to see old friends returning x

Since under new management this is no longer a locals or family pub. If you want to get hammered and get treated untowardly this is the place to go it’s such a shame as we used to be regulars

Dropped in as a last minute thought for Satuday lunch. Pub was fairly quiet and was surprised they still offered an extensive menu. Only wanting a light lunch I opted for Steak and Blue Cheese pie and chips. The nicest pub pie I have had in a long time: not the normal 'chain pub' fare but home-made with plenty of chunks of meat. Very good value. Happy to recommend.

Carvery lunch for three including one vegan. £30.85. Best selection of vegetables I’ve seen. Two choices of vegan mains. Service brilliant. Definitely will come again. Highly recommend.

The pies and bread are delicious. The Sunday roast is absolutely incredible, the best in Exeter. It’s fantastic that they offer delivery and collection on Just Eat, we just really wish that every day was Sunday so that we could order more often! Do not hesitate to come along to the Clifton, it’s so welcoming and absolutely beautifully cared for. You can tell that the owners run it with love. Exeter, make the most of this spot!!!

Great Pub! Does really good pie & mash! Visit here regularly with my wife & always great. Think it used to be a bit of a dive & that puts people off but give it a try! Has a decent selection of beers etc too

We were staying over one night in Exeter and came in to try the home made pies . Really think they were the best we have ever tasted . We had the cauliflower cheese and red onion and the steak and blue cheese but there was lots of other options . Lots of chunks of steak and generous jugs of gravy . Lovely lunch , thankyou

Possibly the worst experience I have ever had in a pub the lady behind the bar was not only rude but had the worst attitude I have ever seen no change for pool no welcome on entering found something in my pint and was basically called a liar didn't ask for a replacement but was told the pint was ok when she poured it also told she was closing early and basically didn't want us there well she got her wish I will never drink in there again and I hope that this review will make you think again before spending your hard earned cash there

I stumbled across the Clifton today. Wonderful friendly service. Fresh products everywhere. Lovely atmosphere. Beetroot, orange and ginger cake was amazing. Will definitely be popping back with all the family. Beautifully decorated and love the Xmas decorations ❤

Beautiful pub but the lady and gentleman behind the bar today are not welcoming and looked annoyed that we chose to drink in their pub. Wouldn’t revisit.

The staff here are so lovely. We came for lunch and had the steak and Guinness and steak and blue cheese pies with chips, peas and gravy. Everything was delicious and all homemade! We took some bread and cakes home from the on-site bakery too....

This place was booked for our Christmas Lunch we had to make our decisions a month before we went I ordered Steak no starter or sweet which was £11.75 the others ordered turkey. We arrived at noon for 12.30pm we went up to the food bar where we served ourselves with vegetable and I was given my “steak” this was not grilled or fried to my choice but braised this was not what I was expecting! When I tried to cut through it, it was so tough I could have soled my shoes with it I spoke to the bar staff who went and got the chef he explained that the “steak” had been braised for 2 hours I said it needed more than that it was so tough! He did apologise they then offered me mushroom wellington which I declined, I was then offered a glass of Prosecco which I also declined as I had another meeting to go to and I was also driving! My deposit was refunded and the meal was written off! I was given a miniature bottle of Prosecco! Would I go again not sure as it wasn’t what I was expecting! If I order steak I expect it to be cooked to order not braised! I could have done better and I’m not a professional! Really sorry The Clifton Inn you will have to up your game before I come back again. Your staff are very friendly but unfortunately that does not make up for the food!

Excellent food , plenty of variety and a lot of it , nothing was too much trouble , several in our party had mobility issues , staff went out of their way to make sure everyone was looked after and happy Will definitely book for next year Thankyou everyone at the Clifton

Just had sunday lunch at the clifton inn in newtown exeter the carvery was very good, a choice of 4 meats and about 8 veg we found the staff friendly and family friendly, this was our first visit for sunday lunch and would be going back. the pub has it's own bakery where they cook there own bread and pies it is well worth a visit

Fui a este pub para pedir direcciones de la calle. El personal es muy servicial. Noté la panadería y el menú de comida y decidí comer algo antes de partir. Pedimos sopa y pan. La sopa llegó dentro de un pan redondo casero de la panadería de la casa y fue absolutamente deliciosa. Este pub y panadería merecen tener éxito en un momento en que la industria del pub está luchando. Llevarse bien y apoyar este lugar.

Mientras viajábamos a casa, decidimos atacar a Exeter para nuestro almuerzo del domingo en la posada de Clifton. Tuvimos el almuerzo de domingo más sabroso que hemos tenido en años. Visited on a Saturday night and were surprised to find it quiet, but still with a pleasant atmosphere. Both had steak and the portions were huge! Tasty food, good beer, friendly staff. What more could you ask for? Oh yes, excellent prices!

Habiendo estado en este pub en numerosas ocasiones y comimos antes. Decidí irme para el domingo asado con mi novia. No reservamos con antelación, pero lograron que nos apretaran. Valió la pena ir ya que era una muy buena relación calidad-precio. Definitivamente recomendaré a cualquiera que pruebe aquí.

Amazing food, great atmosphere, great bar staff and amazing chef all this for just £26.30!!! I would highly recommend. They do a Sunday carvery, steak night on a Saturday and breakfasts too.

Looked like a student free pub, a pleasant rare find in Exeter, enjoyed pint of Otter and chose from 4 page menu for food. Beer and food first class, prices average, not pumped up city prices.

Si estás buscando un buen pub pasado de moda. . . sin cadena . . . y querer buena comida en el bar. . no va más allá. . . . excelente opción en el menú. . . todo hecho en casa. . . . Tuve el bistec casero y pastel de patata no me puedo quejar. . . . de hecho, nuestro grupo de 6 disfrutamos muchísimo de toda la experiencia.

Este lugar fue recomendado y como extraños a la zona, estábamos buscando una pinta decente, una buena comida de pub, una sonrisa de bienvenida, niños sin gritos y una cálida atmósfera amigable. Tenemos todo eso y mucho más. Esta es una joya, comida auténtica y verdadera, papas fritas caseras y comida que todos los norteños disfrutan, pasteles sanos, pescado gigante y filetes gruesos a un precio razonable. Comimos aquí esta noche, cenas de pescado, empanadas de carne y patatas, pero el suculento jamón, bien hecho con crujiente goteo era para morirse. Con una disponibilidad de restaurante tan variada cerca, hemos reservado este lugar mañana. Eso casi resume cuánto hemos disfrutado la comida y la experiencia aquí. Por cierto, el sábado es la noche de carne, así que reserve temprano, este es uno de los favoritos de los lugareños. Comida fantástica, ten hambre.

Saw the carvery through the window whilst walking past, £6.95...couldn't go wrong. Beef Pork or Ham, Roast and Boiled spuds, Cabbage, Cauliflower Cheese, Broccoli, Green Beans, cabbage, Stuffing, Horseradish, Apple sauce, what's not to like? Super, super coffee as well. We'll be back...get in early.

The Clifton is that increasingly rare beast - a proper pub with no pretentions and no attempt to be a gastro pub. I had a nice conversation with a friendly landlord, a decent pint and good old-fashioned fish and chips.

We were visiting Exeter for the weekend and stumbled across this place on the way back to our hotel.It seemed to be a bit of a locals bar but we felt quite welcome after a few minutes. Once the management and locals knew we were from out of town, they couldn't of been more helpful. Lots of advice and recommendations offered. Great choice of real ales and some local lagers too. Only came in for a pint but stayed a bit longer as the staff were very welcoming.

Vimos una crítica entusiasta en Facebook para este gran pub y pensé que ya era hora de hacer una visita. Nuestra primera visita en 2012, cuando estaba bajo gestión diferente fue muy decepcionante. El barman, que parecía terrible, dejadas con pelo grasiento, era desagradable y casi nos desanimó por el Clifton de nuevo. Después de ver esta crítica más positiva decidimos que era hora de probarlo. Nuestro plan era un asador antes de ir a ver una película. Cuando entramos parecía como ir a un pub diferente. Me encantó la decoración y el ambiente agradable. También estaba muy contento para ser recibidos por el propietario acogedora y una variedad de cervezas (3 dos Favoritos y uno que no había probado). El carvery era fantástico y tengo que decir que uno de los mejores que he tenido. A ambos nos gustó encantador pudines luego de la comida también. Yo tenía una deliciosa tarta de limón y sorbete de lima con esponja. Volveremos pronto!

Por desgracia, solo me dan para ir aquí para una cena de domingo (am correa muy estrecho). Pero lo que una cena de domingo. Un asador de carne brillante con combinaciones para todos los gustos y la opción de volver por ilimitado verduras asadas. Sin adornos, sólo la perfecta, tradicional asado los domingos.

Fuimos por primera vez, a la hora del almuerzo. Personal amable, buena pinta frescos de ale, y un excelente menú de pub, que estaba bien de precio. La comida era excelente, con la opción de tamaño de la porción. Mi única crítica es que todas las mesas y las sillas, sin zona de tipo salón con cómodos asientos. Muy recomendable para una pinta y algo de comer.

Quite often go here for a great value carvery on a Sunday. Handy location near city centre. No pretences here, it is a classic pub serving a decent carvery. Will be back. Staff all very good, proper characters.

The Clifton inn is a very friendly place to visit the staff are very knowledgable about the drinks they serve and do their best to make u feel welcome every time u visit. The food is excellent also at reasonable prices and although we had meals already paid for somewhere else we would regularly pay the Clifton a visit for a decent feed I fully recommend this inn if your in the area give it a try you won't be disappointed From kevin (pils drinker)

After a recent stay in Exeter for 14 week myself and a few friends ( work colleagues )found this marvellous pub the staff where friendly the meals very good value for money also the sunday carvery is a must. If you are a real ale lover this is also the place to be, local brewers ales sold and the hosts are very well up to date with the ales on offer. Can't wait for the chance to go back and sample some more of the real ales on offer and fantastic food as well as the gret family atmosphere in the Clifton inn Exeter

Have eaten here over 15 times this year and have had a consistently great experience - staff are always very pleasant to me, my elderly mum who I take for her weekly dinner 'treat' and my little dog who gets served water and snacks. It's good to see all walks of life here - families, students, business people, local politicians and seniors from nearby. Outstanding attitude to vegans, seem very happy to accommodate my needs and are interested in developing menu options to add variety in the future. The hosts, Saskia, and Nigel go out of their way to make you welcome and are always up for an interesting and thoughtful chat as your food is being prepared - have got to know them a little as a customer and like them both very much. High quality unpretentious food prepared with a home cooked touch at a very reasonable price. Great that they offer different portion sizes for different appetites. The place is always well presented too. Really recommend checking the Clifton Inn out - a local business that's worth supporting and that deserves great success !

My wife and I had a family meal at the Clifton Inn last Saturday as part of the 22 strong family group commented on elsewhere.We were amazed at the value for money for the range of meals offered. Especially the fact that each meal had a 'large' or 'small' portion size offered. The 'small' size was perfectly adequate for us. The quality of our meal and others around us was equally amazing, we had a 'veggie' option chilli and it was just perfect.Also worthy of mention was the fantastic customer service provided to our group through the evening despite the group size. It was clear that the other customers were not adversely affected by the serving staff focusing on us, in fact the whole customer experience would put many so called 'high end' establishments to shame.My wife and I shop in Exeter from time to time and struggle to find a central eatery, no longer ! We will certainly be back to visit the Clifton!

I visited here last week in short notice in a party of 22. The meals we had were brilliant value for money and the landlord was a lovely host. My only moan is,it would of been nice to have been sectioned off abit more as we were in the middle of the pub but that's only me being fussy!!! Will definitely be visiting again.

Would definitely recommend everyone to try this lovely pub. Despite a very late booking for 22 people, the food was freshly cooked and tasty,very reasonably priced, the service was great, and nothing was too much trouble. We'll be back!

Warm friendly pub. Big well stocked bar. I turned up on a very quiet Tuesday. Food was only being served to order, however the landlord cooked a fab hand battered cod and chips. You can even chose the beer/cider you would like in the batter. If you are staying in Exeter, this pub is behind the jury's inn hotel, opposite the council open car park In the town centre. You will not be disappointed, why stay in a boring chain hotel bar, paying stupid money for rubbish cider/beer , when there is such a great little pub around the corner. I forfeited my £22 company evening meal allowance in my chain type hotel and spent £7 on a hearty pub meal. If you like cider, Nigel has local cider on draught and local bottle cider. Also main stream cider like Thatchers gold. Two pool tables, large sitting areas. Dart board. Juke box and live music (1st weekend of every month I believe ).Local pubs close every day in the uk due to lack of trade, this pub deserves your support, you will have a full belly, a great night and still have change in your pocket. 10/10.

Visited with my mother and aunt, they ordered a small roast of the day, very good portion sizes still, looked good! Very reasonable price. I had the gourmet burger with chips and homemade coleslaw ( a delight) very good size burger and lots of chips for £8.50, tasted very good with lots of trimmings! Certainly won't go hungry after this! Well done! Good menu, will be back to try more.The staff were very friendly, and witty! All in all very pleased

My son and I visited the Clifton because he is coming to Exeter Uni and will be living locally. What a great find, a superb traditional pub in the 21st century. The building is well maintained and decorated - spotlessly clean. The greeting and customer service were second to none.There were three ciders on tap and a great range of local real ales. Of note was the local lager from Otter Brewery. I was willingly offered samples of any ale I turned the conversation to. And yes - previous poster - the barman didn't like the Taunton Trad, it was good he had an honest opinion, different to mine.Then the surprise was the food. We expected just ordinary fayre, but what we received was far better. The flavour of my Balti curry was excellent. My son's hunters chicken looked very tasty and was devoured completely. Luckily we are big eaters - the portions are generous.Finally, there are two well appointed pool tables and a dart board. And I didn't mention the prices - generously good value, avoiding the connotation of the word 'cheap'.What a wonderful find.

Visit quite regularly. Lovely selection of local beers and the food is all home made and absolutely delicious, would recommend the chicken Kiev. They also serve tarka lager which is a really decent pint and not many places in Exeter serve this. Friendly hosts and a pleasant atmosphere would definately recommend visiting, although it's slightly off the beaten track it's much better than its nearby rivals. Avoid the duke of York and come here!

Stumbled across the Clifton Inn whilst staying at the nearby Jury's Inn. Very friendly, welcoming staff. Good selection of local beers, and wide choice of wines. Landlord offered us sips of both to help with our choices. The pub itself lacks character, but the service and choice of drinks more than makes up for it.

Staying in the jury hotel when I looked out of the window i saw the clifton inn pub was i glad i went for a walk and stumbled though the door the bar staff couldn't have made me feel more welcome great selection of beers and amazing collection of rums and whiskeys if your in Exeter vist you won't be disappointed did i say the staff were brilliant

Today we had Chicken Kiev at the Clifton Inn. It was freshly made by their chef and was absolutely delicious. Hot and tasty. Nigel and Saskia are excellent hosts and publicans. Couldn't fault the service or atmosphere. Brilliant end to a long afternoon shopping in Exeter.

The clifton is a lovely pub to go to for Sunday carvery which is the best in Exeter and very good value Henry that works behind the bar is very pleasant and friendly.Nigel and his wife are the best hosts very friendly and welcoming certainly worth a visit not far to go for us which is good.

We were staying at the hotel next door, and stopped in for a pint before getting some food. The pub was quiet. I chose a cider, having tried neither of the ciders on offer previous - it was simply pot luck. The bar man offed the advice "I wouldn't drink that if I was you". I though he was pouring me a taste, but he proceeded to pour a whole pint. He was right the cider was lacking in flavour, not something I would buy a 2nd one of.

We went here today(29th feb) had a lovely roast with my partner and her son. We all had a carvary the meat was fantastic and the veg was simply awesome. Would go there again for sunday lunch.

having visited this pub many times , we have tried various food dishes and every time we were very pleased as we are a very fussy pair when it comes to home cooked pub food. A medium range pub. Only two people in on a Friday afternoon. Free pool. Beer was average, possibly because I suspect that it was the first pint pulled that day.

Great food, great hosts and great atmosphere. The carvery has 3 different prices in addition to the usual kids price, making the meal great value as you can choose to suit purse and appetite. The food is excellent, the gammon positively melt in the mouth! and the chocolate fudge cake was rich and delicious. The hosts were welcoming and attentive as were the staff.

We went there yesterday for a get together as it was my daughters birthday party. The landlord greatest us upon arrival, the man behind the bar had excellent customer service skills. We tried to keep the children's noise down but couldn't also manage it, we did apologise but they said it was fine. There were two pool tables, fruit machines and the football was on the TV. My friend had a fry up too and he enjoyed it. All in all a good day out emjoyed by all!!!!!! Thank you Clifton Inn for a good day

Unpretentious, standard pub food which is done well. The staff are welcoming, it's big bright and open inside. Would recommend the steak and kidney pudding. We have eaten here a couple of times with family, and not been disappointed.

Just popped in for a beer on our arrival for a weeks work. Welcome couldn't be friendlier and really nicely kept bitters, really recommend this but didn't try the food.
