Went for a lush breakfast date with my lush life partner. I had no idea we would have such a lovely time when we left the house for Cowick Street. The sourdough toastie made me feel like the best version of myself again. Being barrista trained myself, I know when a coffee is brewed well. The latte I enjoyed was perfectly crafted and i savoured every drop! Thanks for having us! If the cafe was bigger I would ask to have my future wedding reception with you guys!

I guess not so many folk seek advice on a café in St Thomas, Exeter. But this one should be on your list as worth a visit to St Thomas just to enjoy the café! I mean, St Thomas has a great Church, also worth a visit, plus Pinces Gardens, an historic and horticultural masterpiece, plus of course great riverside walks downstream through interesting boat yards or upstream through parks and sights. But I guess it's not a tourist destination like Exeter Cathedral. However, given you've decided to head south-east (for the leisure centre, the bowling, M&S, the Quay or whatever), I urge you to take your refreshment at this place. It's child-friendly, dog-friendly, vegan-friendly, full-english breakfast friendly - in fact it's basically everyone-friendly (and purse-friendly). All the food is prepared with locally-sourced, high-quality ingredients (no powdered eggs, no palm sugar additives) and prepared fresh on the spot to order. The staff are welcoming, friendly, enthusiastic about their work and keen to help. I really started making it a regular stop because of the coffee. They really know how to make coffee. Foaming real milk over real beans is an art. These guys are artists.

What a gem of a café! We were looking for somewhere locally to have a late lunch and were thrilled, when reading the menu in the window, that there were lots of gluten free options available. My husband chose the large full breakfast which included locally sourced gluten free sausages, bacon, mushrooms, baked beans, tomatoes, hash brown, eggs and a plate of gluten free toast and butter. He said that it was his best gluten free breakfast ever!! I had a delicious (and beautifully presented) goats cheese, beetroot and rocket granary bread sandwich with crisps and salad. My sister-in-law, who has to be very careful what she eats, asked whether she could have a plain ham toastie which wasn't on the menu and they happily made one specially for her. There was a great selection of drinks including lovely coffees and Teapigs teas. We then bought some cakes (including gluten free of course) to take away for later.

Stopped in Exeter on the way to Newquay and went to Café at 36 for cooked breakfast. My wife had chosen the café based on the Trip Advisor reviews and the menu posted on the Café at 36 website. It didn't disappoint. The four of us enjoyed our lovely meals, debating on the best component. It was hard to choose between the sausage, egg, bacon, hash browns or granary toast because everything was full of flavour. Both of the ladies who served us were extremely welcoming, offering tips regarding places to eat in Newquay and wishing us well for our holiday. We were very glad that we popped in and stocked up for the rest of our journey. Thanks again

Unfortunately although the cakes , sandwiches , snacks and drinks are of good quality and choice the terrible delays in service on our last three visits mean we will not be returning in a hurry . We waited twenty minutes for our coffees and then the flapjack we ordered had been forgotten ! It is such a pity as we really can not see the reason for such significant delay as there appear to be plenty of staff each time we've visited .Quite a few people looked in or stood at the doorway before deciding to leave . It is Tuesday 7th June 2016 at 8.35am.I am hungry and enter Cafe at 36 and request a breakfast and coffee costingaround £8 - highly expensive in comparison to other restaurants/cafes nearby.I sit and wait at my table for around 5 minutes and a builder comes through the door with a dog!Walks straight up to the food preperation area and continues to shout at the dog to sit down, the dog is shaking and the 2 women behind the counter, both rub the dog down talking to it, they then continue to prep my breakfast without washing their hands! The dog is now practically in the kitchen!I am horrified when they bring me my coffee, I said to the woman - is it normal for dogs to be allowed into the kitchen prep area? she looked at me and grunted! My food was brought out and throughout my breakfast I watched as the dog continued to itch and scratch and shake! This is absolutely disgusting and as a dog owner myself I would never allow my dog into the food preparation area of our kitchen whilst cooking, I was nearly sick, I looked for a food hygiene rating on the door or window and did not see one displayed. I can see why!I will never eat in there again and will ensure I tell all my clients and friends about this disgusting cafe!!The food wasn't great either as they were more concerned with the dog, my coffee was also warm!Never again.

We were shopping nearby and had checked on tripadvisor for somewhere nice to have lunch and chose the Cafe at 36. I desperately wanted to like it but it was such a disappointing experience and I can't actually believe it had a Taste of the West award! My boyfriend had a bacon sandwich and coffee and I had a fish finger sandwich and tea. We had to wait for our drinks even though it wasn't very busy and we had asked for a loose leaf tea but had been given a mug with a tea bag sat stewing in it instead. When we asked why it wasn't loose leaf, the girl didn't know but after asking the manager was told they don't do breakfast tea in the loose leaf even though this was not explained when ordering it. My boyfriends bacon sandwich came out first and I could see by his face he was not impressed. When he opened it to put ketchup on there were areas of bread with no bacon at all. My fish finger sandwich came later and was nicely presented but the fish fingers were greasy and had hardly any fish in them and the bread had gone hard on the edges as it it had been partly toasted (perhaps sat somewhere hot while waiting for the fish to cook). All in all it wasn't great and we wouldn't recommend it. The menu showed signs of using local produce which is good, but the fish fingers didn't strike me as locally sourced which is a real shame. Sorry, but it wasn't great.

With the continued growth of the commercial coffee giants (Exeter has 7 Costa Coffee outlets now!), I strongly believe in supporting the independent outlets whenever possible, especially when the coffee is this good. I've been coming here on and off for 7 years now and am glad to say the quality of the coffee remains up there with the best, if not better. The choice of snacks are delightful, my particular favourite being the chocolate caramel shortbread, but the breakfasts are simply superb too. What else could you ask for? Well a stunning little Bose sound system delightfully enhances the ambience of this place. As Arnie once said, "I'll be back", time and time again hopefully.

Cracking food - all local ingredients. I normally pop in just for a sandwich but on Saturday I have 2 friends visiting Exeter and we want a full breakfast for 3 - this is where we'll go.

Cafe at 36 used to be my first choice for a pit stop but I've found in the last couple of weeks the standard of the food seems to have dropped a little. The drinks are great - good choice of lovely teas and great coffee as well as making smoothies now which is nice but on the last few times I've popped in the cake has been stale, eggs come out a little undercooked. On the plus side staff are always more than happy to put things right.

We were a little early for an appointment and stopped in for a coffee. We ended up with fresh smoothies that were very good. The mango ginger smoothie was the best we tried and could have used a little more ginger, but we are ginger freaks. Pleasant and busy location with some outside chairs and a friendly staff. Good value

Lovely, lovely coffee with delicious Pain au Raisin -- quite addictive -- and lovely interesting, mostly home made cakes. THE place to pop in for a capucchino any time of the day, but especially to start off the day. Staff always friendly with a relaxed atmosphere.

I love this cafe-veg breakfasts, American pancakes and extra large coffees. Staff always smiling. The American pancakes are why I keep going back though-big and fluffy with sides of syrup or fruit compote. Yum!!!

If you are ever in Exeter on a trip, holiday or even if you live here you must take time out to visit this wonderful café. We have eaten her a few times now and each time the food and atmosphere are excellent, Café at 36 is situated in the St Thomas area of Exeter just down from Exe Bridge Retail Park. There is a FREE 2 hour stay car park just 30 seconds away at Cowick Street shopping centre which is handy as we travel from the other side of Exeter. We normally have the all-day Devon Breakfast and the quality of the Bacon and Sausages are fantastic along with the bread they use for Toast and most of the food is Locally Sourced too. There is a Vegetarian and Gluten free options on the menu too. I have to say they serve the best breakfast in Exeter, and probably Devon and I have been to many cafes and retail restaurants and nothing has beaten this in my humble opinion and in fact this is the only café I do not need to put sugar in my coffee they make. The Café décor is an eclectic mix, I guess it’s bohemian too, it’s light and airy with local artists work for sale along with books too. I have to say the staff here are very friendly and interact with the regulars well, the staff on today were a young man and lady and the café was very busy but both had a cheery smile. One thing to note, You do need to get your menu from the till and when you are ready to order you need to go to the till and order and pay, The drinks and food will then be brought to your table as we found out on our first visit.Nether the less if you are looking for an excellent quality breakfast café at 36 is very hard to beat.

This must be the best breakfast in Exeter, real sausages, real bacon and proper bread. Not only that but it is probably one of the cheapest. Plus there is free parking right across the road. Next time we will try the snack lunch.

I have just come from cafe at 36 and although it was nice and the coffee was amazing (the best on cowick street) I was un impressed with the breakfast, as they give it a lot of hype about local best produce but to be honest it was just another breakfast the mushrooms were bland and the eggs were hard. my partner had the pancakes and again although they were nice it states on their menu 3 american pancakes where we only got 2 and a very small one may be they ran out of batter. I think a bit more attention to portion's as I believe all three pancakes should of been the same size. all in all nice place but theres nothing that stands out about this place.

Been here a few times for lunch. This cafe adds its unique style to Cowick St. I particularly enjoy the veggie pies. Because a tea bag in a cup is a particular hate if mine, I always go for the pot. Service can be a little slow at times and customers waiting in the queue not always acknowledged, but overall I would definitely recommend Cafe 36.

My wife and I called in for breakfast as a break from our journey down to the west country, the favourable reviews hopefully meant that the small detour from our route would be worthwhile.Unfortunately our overall experience was average at best, the cafe was cold to the point that we had to keep our jackets on the whole time ( as did a couple sat at the next table). We sat at the table right by the counter and despite waitresses passing by us several times (studiously avoiding eye contact) we were ignored until I stood at the counter. We both had a small breakfast and a cup of tea, the tea came in a large round cup with a handle so small that I could not get my finger through it which made drinking difficult. The breakfast was hot and ample, but lacked basic finesse, the toast was nice but it should have come on its own side plate not stacked on top of the breakfast, my packs of butter were actually in my beans covered in sauce ( not nice) and the beans themselves had the look of having been cooked and kept hot for a considerable time.Overall a bit of a shame as the cafe itself appears well kept and is obviously popular as it was busy.

Lovely place, great prices, really good food. Nice large portions it's rare that I can go somewhere and say the small breakfast is the largest I can eat! Friendly service and generally a great place to stop by.

There are very few places in the Cowick Street area of Exeter where you can get a good cup of coffee and, for foot weary shoppers in that part of the city, this makes a welcome respite. The service is good, the coffee, excellent and our dog is also welcome.

Had a great coffee here, but had to wait quite a long while to be served and the gentleman behind the counter did not look at me or recognize that I was waiting. Got a sausage roll, but no choice of brown or white roll and only one tiny sausage in a tiny roll it was only £1 but sort of expected a bit more. Good coffee but did not enjoy the rest of it, as did not find it friendly, maybe just an off day as all other reviews say its good.

Norm and I have been going to this café for longer than I dare think! The coffee Norm rates as 10 out of 10 and the loose leaf tea is wonderful. The cakes are yummy and the meals delicious. However what really makes this café a one-off is the way it is run. Without exception the staff are friendly and efficient. It is a kind of 'community cafe' where people come to know each other and dogs and children are always welcome. It is possible to get a quick take-away coffee or to linger reading the paper. I would wholeheartedly recommend this café to anyone and everyone. Even John, the owner, is OK once you have got to know him!!

Popped in whilst shopping over the road at the Co-operative and discovered the best coffee in Exeter. This was a quick stop before going to pick up my son so it was a Cappuccino and the best Rocky Road very competitively priced. The young woman who took my order I assumed was the owner as she was so attentive and customer focussed. She asked me if I wanted to try some cinnamon which I did making the coffee taste really great. I like the fact they offered three choices of the size of coffee you want to take account of different tastes. The toilets despite being through an outer door were clean and pleasant. I try where possible to support local independent coffee shops and this one is top quality and as Arnie said "I'll be back!"
