If you get a deal, the hotel prices are good for what you get, and breakfasts are fine. The evening meal our party of 4 had was awful, to the extent it was almost hilarious. The not too big and attractively presented starters did not prepare us for what was to come... The 2 young waitresses were absolutely swamped with a full dining room, most people booked in at the same time. Orders were muddled up "What was it you were having?" "sorry" repeated all round the room. When our main courses finally arrived, one was wrong, all were removed then returned brown, shrivelled up. The good selection of veg were a uniform grey- carrots, peas, 'red' cabbage and beans. The duck was so overcooked none of it could be eaten. One of the kleflico was dried up all the way through. All around were complaints- lack of cutlery, over powering air conditioning. Some meals looked OK, ours was not, a good chef would not have allowed them out. OK we should have complained, but there were so many complaints we didn't have the heart, and to be honest we feared what would happen to our meals if we did complain. Some extra staff eventually appeared, but not until the dining room was an utter fiasco. We were waiting for the pranking TV crew to appear.

Interesting choices - crab and avocado salad followed by wildebeest was our option. Eager young staff in a flurry, not much sense of personal attention or oversight though. Butter, when called for, was in a plastic tub already half used. Wine on the many as by the glass was not, because it was corked rather than a screw cap. No dessert wine on the menu ... 'try a spritzer?' was the suggestion. It felt like corners were being cut. Food OK and great view so it worked for us as in-hotel diners on a deal, but would have been disappointed under any other terms.

Food well below average and price well above. Staff lovely but the whole place is so unorganised it was actually comical. We were made to feel very unwelcome at the bar after our meal by management who made it quite clear our custom was not appreciated - in fact the locals are lucky that he's brought 1.4million in revenue to the area!! He let us know this in between using the 'c' word! We hadn't even complained - this was just conversation! Will be extremely surprised if they are still here next winter.

My fiancé and I booked a table for 2 at 6pm last Sunday as she was going away with work for 4 months and we wanted a special meal together. We were the only ones in the restaurant and we expected good service but I have never seen the like of it in my life from a place that claims to be a 4*hotel. Initially we were met by a friendly manager type who seated us and took our drink orders, so far so good. However he went away and was replaced by the most annoying waiter (restaurant manager) we have ever met. While trying to have a chat with my fiancé and enjoy the lovely view of Portland he was constantly singing loudly and joking loudly with the chefs. The food was prompt but was a mixed bag. The scallop and black pudding starter was lovely. The corn four ways was a disaster, it both looked and tasted awful. When the waiter cleaned our plates we told him how bad it was and he just said the head chef was away and didn't show much concern or offer an apology. After he cleaned our plates we waited for him to return to order some drinks but he did not appear, 5 mins later I walked to the bar to find it empty. I waited at the bar for a further 5 mins when he returned, presumably after a cigarette (he did smell bad). I asked him to return to the table and tell my fiancé what soft drinks they had, he said "that depends on what sort of soft drink she would like!" I thought as we were the only people in the restaurant I should not have to wait 10 mins to order a drink and he should not be so awkward and cheeky! The mains and cheese were better my only point would have been that the cod chorizo and samphire dish was very salty Maybe leave out either the chorizo or samphire. The espresso was served lukewarm and just put the icing on the cake of a disappointing evening. When we paid the bill, another couple had just arrived and were dealt with by the annoying waiter and we overheard that he did not know what the soup of the day was, again terrible for a 4* hotel. The original friendly guy sorted the bill and apologised for the starter and said he would discuss it with the chef, and offered us complimentary drinks (nice touch, at least not all the staff are terrible). However we were still so annoyed with the other loud, singing and inattentive waiter who obviously thinks all the diners are guests staying at the hotel and have to eat there, so we just left. This place has the potential to be a very nice but need to hire some better staff.

Dined at the Cliff Panoramic Restaurant on a Saturday evening. We had the whole restaurant to ourselves (which is usually not a good sign), however, most of the hotel guests were all out attending a wedding. We were sitting right by the window with an amazing view of the sea. We both had a starter, a main and a dessert which were absolutely delicious. The triple-cooked chips tasted so good that we ordered an extra portion! Don't be put off my the looks of the outside buildings. It looks rather like an industrial estate (which I think it used to be) but it doesn't reflect at all the overall fantastic inside experience!

Great view from panoramic restaurant, however despite going on a very quiet evening (only two other couples in the restaurant), we waited 15 mins for an appetiser of mixed olives to arrive which were served along with a large amount of brine. Waited a further 30 mins for main courses. The Sirloin steak on the specials board for £19 was no more than a 4oz steak that was cut in to small strips and piled up to look like more, the chips served with it had the taste of stale cooking oil. Waiting staff were disinterested and most tellingly, when we came to pay the bill they were surprised that we were not staying in the Hotel.

My husband and I visited the Cliff for the first time last week and enjoyed ourselves. Although the restaurant itself is not terribly atmospheric (the decor and furnishings are very characterless) the view is gorgeous which makes it a lovely place to go on a summer evening. The food was mostly very good: our smoked salmon starters were well presented and the mains were great, in particular my husband's steak. I won out when it came to puddings, with an excellent white chocolate cheesecake whilst my husband laboured his way through a rather dry and heavy parkin which was accompanied by a wholly inadequate amount of clotted cream. We didn't have a bottle of wine but I had a delicious glass of Sauvignon semillon blanc at a reasonable price. What lets this place down at present, apart from the parkin? the dreadful piped music for one thing: I wasn't a Carpenters fan even in their heyday so to have their greatest hits on a loop rather grated on my nerves. This wasn't improved by the competing noise of what sounded like a radio being played in the kitchen. The waitress was lovely but she had to look after the bar and the restaurant so naturally service became slow as soon as a few tables were full. And, finally, the beer. Or in fact the lack of it. Being offered Newcastle brown when I asked if there was any bitter was pretty disturbing - it's a shame that there was only bottled beer of any kind on offer.

Following a disastrous meal at the Cliff just before Christmas, we were invited to come back for a complimentary meal. Both of us chose the steak as a main course, as this was one of our complaints previously. We were not disappointed , cooked exactly as requested and very tender and tasty . The chips were 'home made' , and the peppercorn sauce was lovely. Our starters were also very good. I should point out that previous to our poor meal, we had always had a very good steak there . The serving staff were friendly, professional and efficient as they had been on prior visits.

We enjoyed dinner at The Cliff Panoramic Restaurant on Tuesday 29th October. We only had a main course having indulged in a Devon cream tea in the afternoon! Both were delicious and represented extremely good value for money. The restaurant is a large glass box on the front of the hotel to give great sea views. However, it was impressively dark when we were there, but I guess will be beautiful on a summer's evening.

We had breakfast each morning of our 2 day stay and dinner here on the Friday evening. Views are stunning. Dinner was very good value and food very good quality especially the scallops and steak. Excellent Sauvignon Blanc. Lovely white crockery too. There was a good choice of continental breakfast as well as cooked. I asked one morning if there were Ryvitas (I know not everyone's taste) and although there were not, the Restaurant Manager made sure there were some the next morning ...! A small request but I was impressed with the effort! Well done to all. You do not have to be resident to eat here so well worth a visit!

The location is an ugly former naval HQ that nearly made us turn around and go elsewhere, but we were glad we didn't. The building is now a hotel and spa, and the restaurant is on the first floor, jutting-out over the main entrance and giving diners great views of Portland Bill on three sides of the room. The service was both good and friendly. The lunch menu isn't extensive but the quality of the food was excellent. The mains took a while to come but this was obviously because they were being freshly prepared. My wife has eaten Caesar salad all over the world but she said this was the best she's ever had. I had the burger which was clearly homemade but not very tasty. The brownies were superb and the lemon posset was also really good. We will go again for the views and for the quality of the food.

We sat on the sofas in the bar area at the end of the meal with our coffees/liquors not wanting this nice relaxing evening to end. We will be back, with family/friends or as a couple. The long drive up to this place is a little off-putting as it looks a little like a derelict commercial estate (I think the building was originally built for some other purpose). I didn't spot any signs for the restaurant, but found it by following the signs for the Portland Spa hotel (luckily I knew it was in there). The restaurant is tastefully decorated and the sea views are stunning if you can get window table. The menu was quite varied although vegetarian options were limited. Everyone found their meals enjoyable, if not fantastic. Deserts were a triumph, however, several of us had the chocolate brownie which was delicious. I probably won't return as I feel the menu is overpriced, but it was worth going once to enjoy the views.

So we stayed at the hotel and decided as we were a little far out and wanted a drink we would eat at the hotel. If im being honest i wasnt expecting much. My partner and I eat out about 3/4 times a week and id say i have rather high standards. ( I hate paying for food i think i could have cooked better myself) So i was very very please with the outcome here. Prompt, polite, friendly service. Nice view over the lighthouse and the sea from our table. Nice wine, and local cider. One of the best steaks my partner has ever had ( according to him) the food was perfectly cooked, very reasonably priced, and the service was great. The only downside was the atmosphere wasnt really there, however we were eating on a Monday night in March, We have said we will be going back in a few months to see if they have kept this high standard up.

Table of 7 booked over the phone about an hour before as rated #1 restaurant in Portland. Arrived slightly early, table wasn't ready so waited 15 mins or so, not a problem. Asked for some water twice as I had a bit of a cough, took 3 trips to the table before it came. Food took ages to arrive, and the rare steak ordered turned out medium - didn't bother complaining as was too hungry. Only 1 waiter on for the whole restaurant, along with 1 chef. In all scoffed the food 2hrs after arriving. Told the waiter we weren't happy, he didn't really accept that the poor experience was their fault but offered a discount off the bill....or a call to the police! Became quite aggressive and confrontational to the girls in the group and accused us of being freeloaders (all professionals). Would NOT recommend, absolutely ridiculous and disgusting attitude. Regardless of poor service due to staff levels, a restaurant manager should NEVER act in that manner - it was more akin to the prologue for a pub fight!

Me and my partner were staying in the hotel for two nights and decided to visit the restaurant for dinner. We arrived at 6.30 and were told that we needed to make a reservation but the restaurant looked empty. Our reservation was booked for 45 minutes later. I told the waitress that I had a Tastecard (2 for 1). We arrived at 7.15 for our dinner, had a nice table and were given the menus. I thought it was strange that we were not asked to order drinks straight away. We were then greeted by another waiting member who gave us information on special deals. A few minutes later we ordered our food. We both had fish and chips, the pea puree was far too sweet, and the fish was 80% batter! When we paid for our food I was expecting our Tastecard discount but was then told that I had to order from the A La Carte menu! Why wasn't I told this at the beginning! Also, a glass of wine was £6! Overall, expensive for what you get, not bad service, but the food quality could have been a lot better.

The lunch menu was varied and interesting - most of us chose from the main menu, but to my mortification my 5 year old demanded a Fried Egg Sandwich! Lovely Waiter Chap, rather than insisting on him chosing from the menu checked with the kitchen and made his day by saying he could have one. Cue one very happy 5 year old (and one slightly less mortified parent). The food was lovely - the burgers were tasty and the twice fried chips were great. We were very excited about finally visiting the new hotel at the Southwell Business Park. We went for a Sunday lunch with my parents and after arriving at the Business Park, without the lack of any clear signposting we eventually stumbled upon the restaurant. We were shown to our table by what we presume was the maitre d' who was very polite. She took our drinks order and returned a few minutes later to take our food order. So far, so good....Our roast dinner was brought to our table and it looked fantastic. A huge Yorkshire pudding, 2 thick slices of meat, potatoes, cabbage and broccoli. We also had cauliflower cheese, red cabbage, parsnips and carrots to share - a wonderful looking feed! However, the meal was a disappointment. The potatoes were undercooked, the meat was tough and tasteless and the meal was extremely dry. I tried to get the attention of a member of staff tor request some extra gravy - but when entering and exiting the dining room they never once scanned the room to allow me to catch their eye. Eventually I did manage to request this from the extremely rude waiter (who had already tried to take my drink away even though I was only two thirds of the way through it). To be fair, the gravy was delicious and the highlight of the meal.It then went from bad to worse. We ordered the 2 x trio chocolate mille feuille, apple tart tatin and a trio of ice cream. Where to start!?! The mille feuille arrived, which was layers of stale sponge filled with a chocolate mouse - not quite what we expected. Both the chocolate sauce on the mille feuille plate and the toffee sauce on the tart tatin was dusted with......SALT!! After digging in, the three of us looked at one another, realising that something was drastically wrong. We called the rather rude waiter over (again after waiting 5 minutes for the staff to actively look at the customers) and mentioned that our dishes had salt on them, not sugar. He replied by saying this was entirely correct, he said that it was vanilla salt. We finished our disappointing desserts, but avoided the foul accompanying sauces. My partner ordered the trio of ice cream, which when it arrived was served on a bed of nuts, which was not clearly indicated on the menu. Luckily she's not allergic so she continued eating. As she got to the bottom, again the peculiar taste of salt came into play. Crazy! We decided against having any coffee, just in case they served it with salt rather than sugar! When paying the bill, we queried the vanilla salt with the maitre d' - she's never heard of it! She asked who had told us about this and we pointed out the waiter. So we left wondering if they really mean to serve salt with all 4 desserts, or was this a major mistake in the kitchen? Very bizarre! I think it's fair to say that we won't be rushing back!

Delicious. I had the special which was Sea Bass on a mixed seafood risotto and it was possibly the most delicious meal I have ever had!

We visited The Cliff Panoramic Restaurant and Bar for dinner one Saturday night and found that although the Hotel entrance is a little unusual the restaurant was impressive. The views are excellent, the restaurant layout and the food and service was everything that one would ask for and expect.Try it - and based on our experience you will not be disappointed.

A great experience once again. 5th time at The Avenue and it never fails to deliver first class food and service. The students are a credit to the college. Their enthusiasm and attention to detail make the experience a real pleasure. We thoughally enjoyed the lunch and experience as usual and can't wait to return in the very near future.

Mixed review: A warm and friendly welcome, clean and tidy. Day one: breakfast was lovely, all appeared freshly cooked so it took a little longer, the food was nice and of great value. Feel like there was a whole can of beans for the 'beans on toast' and it was piping hot. The pot of tea was plentiful The 'coffee' milkshake was more like warm milk, not the best. Day two: ordered the thick shake this time - meant to be with ice cream and so thought that would make it cooler and tastier - wrong, it was the same as the previous visit with cream and sprinkles - not the best (if you want a nice thick iced coffee, visit the White Stones cafe). The food took a bit longer again as it was Sunday and busy. The mushroom on toast was cold but we were on a time crunch, so we couldn't send it back. The taste was nice, just cold and the black pudding was a bit on the rubbery side. Everyone else enjoyed theirs.

We stopped by Portland as tourists from the USA. We got a scone, slice of cake, and two coffees, and they were some of the best we’ve had in Europe! The staff were friendly and helpful too.
