The Cleethorpes Mermaid Fish and Chips in North East Lincolnshire

The fish was all better with very little fish. The fish and batter had no flavour. Vinegar has been watered-down.. Honestly the fish I've had.. DONT BOTHER EATING HERE

There food is always hot and the best in grimsby and cleethorpes the staff are so friendly you can eat in at the same price as taking away

The service was OK, but the fish was by far the worst I’ve ever had. There was hardly any fish in the batter which was tasteless and greasy. Also the batter was rock hard. There was no pie option, the chips Sausage were OK. We would not go back again, as there are far better places in Cleethorpes.

Called midweek lovely sunny day, iconic building with nice staff and freshly prepared fish and chip shop food. You can sit in or take away it's all the same price. The food was excellent nice fish with thin and chrispy batter. Very nice indeed. We would go again.

Historic building with good views. Simple decor which is clean and well maintained. Now the food :-) Fish n chips cooked fresh in the traditional way, really tasty and portion sizes spot on. Quick service, and average prices. Will go again for sure.

Been here today for fish n chips peas fish was white and very tasty chip and mushy peas were like home cooked you can eat in or out staff clean tidy and chatty a pleasurable lunch don't have to take my words try it for yourself would recommend and will return

Oh dear. Fancying fish and chips we drove the half hour for a stroll along the front and have some lunch. Ordered cod & chips the fish precariously balanced on a small tray making it awkward to take away! It was not pleasant, the chips had clearly been sitting around and were brown and oily, the fish was greasy and batter thick making it almost impossible to break with the plastic fork. So many fish and chip places here. Sorry we chose to part with £20+ here!

This looks like a real local Fish and chips outlet anf we must say we found it to be so lovely and friendly and you get to eat in or take out for the same price

Working in Grimsby on Wednesday October 26th ' finished job had a ride into Cleethorpes to get Fish and chips ' Mermaid on the front' not my usual fish and chip shop I use when I visit' but give it a try, got fish and chips and peas' absolutely rubbish ' fish looked like it had been fried to death' chips bone hard' £8.90 managed to eat half of it because I was so hungry' rest went into the bin' suffice to say I won't be back' childhood memories of this place gone up in smoke.

Having booked a train for 11,30 on Sunday morning, i pop into this iconic building to ask about the opening times . I was greeted by a lovely Guy and a Lady who was obviously in charge, asked the question and they said what would you be wanting , we will prepare it for you … we have just finished a most fantastic meal of Haddock chips and mushy peas whilst on our way to Manchester Airport, the other passengers were drooling with the smell wafting through the carriage. We shall definitely use the shop again . Well done Guys and Thankyou.

poor service, poor food, we had sausage n chips, mini fish n chips, 2 large fish n chips it was so bad most of my sausage n chips went in the bin, both of the large fish didn’t get eaten. If I’d tried the daughters chips first I wouldn’t have wasted my money on mine as it was awful.

Not worth what we paid for it. Fish hadn’t even been de-skinned. Scabby chips. Oh, and the ‘slush’ is iced water with some juice, not even proper slush! The place doesn’t even have toilets. “Go and use the ones in the train station” was the excuse.

Had a ride to Cleggy for fish and chips and as this opened when we were walking past we decided to try. Quick ordering system, friendly staff and quick service. Tasty food just a little too much batter for me on a rather thin fish - personal taste.

Ordinary sort of chip shop with seating. Clean and tidy. Chips were fine as were the mushy peas I ordered. However, the fish was a different matter. Stale taste and the batter was stuck to the fish, as it (the fish) was so thin. Disappointing.

Where ever we travel I try to find a good fish and chips shop. The Mermaid is exactly that. We ordered 2 portions of mini fish and chips and for the money didn't expect such a delicious small piece of cod. I would recommend this place to anyone that likes an excellent view and a quality meal.

Always open on boxing day which is a real plus. Great curry sauce, great chips and decent fish. Food not on a par with the 2 main posher places but thats not what tjey are aiming for. They do great food for a great place in a cool building. Highly recommended.

Called here onBoxing Day after a bracing walk along the Promenade. Fish was hot and tasty and the batter was crisp and crunchy. The chips were piping hot, too, and delicious. We brought some friends from the USA, this time, who love all seafood, and they were very impressed! As the Americans say: “Good job”, Mermaid staff. We left you with full tummies, and very happy as usual.

We called in on a busy Sunday Lunchtime. The fish, chips and mushy peas were great, staff lovely too.

The fish shop is very clean. The food is always freshly cooked and very hot and is well served. We took our 2 grandchildren out for the day and called at The Mermaid but our grandson was not very keen but asked if he could try a small fish with his chips. We sat down and the next thing he had eaten everything and said it was delicious and wants to go back next time, we all agree with him as the batter is crispy, the chips are well cooked and not greasy.

With several to choose from in Cleethorpes we decided to go for The Mermaid after seeing people with takeout food which looked delicious. Mini fish and chips for £3.90 and really tasty too and the indoor seating was clean and tidy. Definitely worth a visit.

Really interesting building greatly positioned, but in need of a facelift. Sadly, the chips were burnt and a bit tasteless, but the sausages were nice. Unfortunately, being so close to Papas, they are going to struggle unless they up their game.

Visited with two other people today and both the fish and overall portion sizes were tiny compared to other chippie restaurants in the area.

Called with my wife, after a bracing walk along the seafront, for a hot drink and a bite to eat. The restaurant has a wonderful nostalgic appeal and I could imagine the thousands of holidaymakers who have eaten there whilst viewing the panorama from the ancient windows along the front of the establishment.

Stopped for a cod & chips and a haddock and chips on a Sunday afternoon. The building itself could be so much better but it's just run down and has a tired feeling to it. Think plastic chairs and sticky tables which isn't really a surprise as customers are expected to clear their own tables when they leave ! The food was good though and that's what really counts and portion sizes were fine. £11.00 for the 2 of us which isn't particularly cheap but about right for the seaside. Average place all things considered.

Me and my partner visited here over the bank holiday weekend and were really happy with the selection of food offered. The prices here were very reasonable compared with others in the area and we loved our fish and chips! Situated in a perfect spot facing the sea and right on the promenade. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.

Lovely fresh chips and fish served good and hot at sensible prices. The chips were crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The fish had a lovely crisp batter and fresh tasty flakey white fish inside. Top quality stuff. Very good, efficient staff who all knew what their responsibilities were. Small amount of spec to eat inside but half the fun of fish and chips at the seaside is eating it out of the paper on the prom.

Went for some fish and chips and a sunny Sunday. The service and food were excellent, but due to how busy it was, it created quite a large queue. I would easily go back and enjoy the food again.

Chip shop standard as can be. Reasonable price, same old selection. Worth a visit if in area but dont go out way to visit.

Had a drive to cleethorpes today with the family and as you do you have to have fish & chips at the sea side. We ate at the seating area inside which was messy, cluttered with unused high chairs and spare chairs. We took our order around that obstacle course to our table, the table looked like it hadn't been cleaned all day, there was fly's on the inside of the window, kids counted 8 of them. It could be a really nice place if it had a bit of TLC because the food is spot on! If we go back there on our next visit I would love to see some major cosmetic improvements

Me and my partner came here over the Easter weekend. I had a chip bun and my partner had fish and peas. The prices are reasonable and the portions are great, I had plenty of chips.My partner loved his meal, he said he would eat it again. My only complaint is that some chips are a bit too well done.

You can't go to the seaside and not have fish n chips! We tried the Mermaid and we were not disappointed the food was lovely and fresh and the staff very friendly. It is busy but well organised and you can sit in and eat or take away.

Food tastes disgusting. Order two chips (large) with peas and gravy and tasted horrible. Categorically wouldn't call this a fish and chip shop considering the chips wasn't even nice. What else is a fish and CHIP shop meant to serve excellent? Clearly nothing here. However, good quality forks. Disinterested counter staff. Chewing gum over my food.

The fish at the mermaid is brilliant the service superb. And the coffee was very good plenty of room and no fuss will go there again and have told all my friends. Brilliant.

I maid a special journey to try and get to the Mermaid before closing !! I just made it !!Great service!!, I'm in a wheelchair, and asked if I could stay inside and they brought the fish and chips to my table , which were very yummy !!even though they were closing they still had a queue !!I shall eat there every time I visit Cleethorpes as this is one of the best Fish and ChipsI have eaten !!

In this ever changing world in which we live in, you should give it a try because chip shops like this are a dying breed. This has never been back to basics, as it was always basic. Styrofoam and plastic forks, strong tea, marge on your cob and good honest fish and chips, create a feeling of yesteryear that hugs you and makes you smile. Cleethorpes in January is a bleak place, but The Mermaid is a haven and sanctuary to hold up in and watch life slowly pass you by. The heating wasn't on and the tables were dirty but this just adds to the ambience and charm and no one seemed to care. One day this place will not exist and I will probably never go again but I'm pleased to say I've bin and enjoyed. Keep on keeping on✊!

I went for Haddock which was superb.Staff friendly and helpful and (I believe sincerely) apologised for us having to wait.There are some really poor fish and chip shops out there. Trust me - this is not one of them !!

We were on a day trip to Cleethorpes and decided to have a fish and chip lunch. We called in at the Mermaid which is sited next to the railway station and across from the north beach.The building itself is old but unspoilt and fits in well with the railway. The internal again looks dated but that is part of the overall character.The food was really good quality, fresh and piping hot and the service was with a smile, what more can you ask for?We would have no hesitation in recommending this eatery to anyone else and will definitely return ourselves.

we arrived after the restaurant had closed and it was just takeaway service (what we wanted anyway) and they were selling what they had left. Lucky for us they had everything we wanted and the service was very friendly and helpful. Living on the north east coast we are no strangers to great fish and chip and the ones from here didn't disappoint, Lovely light batter on the fish and really tasty chips - we'll definitely be back

Equality, Diversity, Inclusiveness I feel was not heard !?Visited with persons who were obviously from the look foreign looking and I as a native felt the look and service given by one female typical local staff was not within the EDI regs. However the fnc came in mini size too which was good but even though it was confirmed that veg oil is used for frying it was obvious from the taste that some animal prod eg lard was used at some stage hence all food was binned as had a meaty feel and after taste so veggies who do fish or non veggies but adherents of certain religions steer clear. clean but could have been cleaner and staff could do with EDI training which would increase their customer orientation regardless of creed/ colour etc. Come on Cleethorpes poor economic situation is no excuse for dragging britain back to 70's 'love thy neighbour' type of feel. overall fish not fresh or at its best,quality of spuds not the best and far below expected standard

Tried this fish and chip restaurant with family. Excellent value for money with 2 adult and 2 kids meals working out at £15. There is limited seats inside and also no toilets but the railway station ones are right behind. Food is freshly cooked so might have a little wait for it but it's worth it

We visited as a family of 4 it was very busy but wasn't waiting long to get served!! The fish was really tasty and fresh the staff although busy were never flustered and very polite would definitely recommend

This is a great chip shop and definitely worth a visit. It was blowing a gale and pouring rain, so when we stopped off it was very busy but service was pretty quick. Food was very hot and good size portions. Worth a visit for the building too which is a proper old fashioned ship shop.

Indeed this chippy may look nice from the outside and is in a decent location right next to the river bank of the Humber which most mistake as the seaside.The quality of service you receive and the snap is nothing short of dire at bestNO COD NO BEAN!!! ITS A TRAP, SNAP IS CRAP!!!I finally got to the front of the queue where I more of less grunted at, my positive way of receiving people translated the grunts and dirty looks as, "Hi there fine sir how can we be of service to you today" when actually the grunts were of "i fking hate my job, you the smiling customer make my job worst because I have to interact with you which distract me from scratching minge and trying to decipher the smell that stains and lingers on my fingers" Me "ey up love, cod chips and beans please" Cretin with a look of disgust on her face and an attitude of you should know we don't do cod! We're a chippy replies "We don't do cod" Me, bemused and taken a back by the cretins attitude "you don't do cod? OK I'll have sausage chips and bean" Creating then replies "We don't do beans" as if I'm making her life really hard and as though I'm asking for something out of the ordinary Me "sausage chips and gravy then" I was finally served by the chuntering fanny fiddling,finger sniffing creting with the attitude that stinks worst than the only fish they sell, haddock I leave the worst chippy I've ever visited with the sausage chips and gravy I had to resort to and sat on the front. The first bite I took was into the sausage which had a skin thick and chewy like an old rubber sole of a tramps flip flop, the the skin was so thick that the pressure from the bite force all the boiling hot grease to squirt out and down my shirt, the gravy was basically wet salt coloured brown Fair to say I wasn't happy at all with the snap or the service

Friendly service - Pipping hot food - excellent view of the sea - and first class Fish and Chips and of course mushy peas. Nothing more to say. Will return.

Very quick service ! Loads of table to get to. Expected it to be more expensive than it was. Portions were very generous and lovely food. My partner loved her fish cake and my curry was lush

Whilst the place restaurant is small you can still get a seat if you come at the right time. The fish and chips are good, but price is high but about right for seaside prices

The ONLY thing that prevented a full score was due to the fact they don't do pies!Other than that brilliant, friendly, helpful staff, chips were cooked to perfection!I even preferred them to my local back home!Generous portions, great view and they also have batter bits "scraps" something else I don't get back home.Thank you

This was my second visit to Cleethorpes and I took my girlfriend to this cafe.We both absolutely loved it. How lucky we are that this building has been saved from development, read the plaque outside. So anyone criticising the building does not appreciate architecture.The food was excellent and like MacDonalds, we should all clean up after ourselves into the bin that is provided.Let's keep places like this going and help out.

You can't visit the seaside without fish and chips - can you? We parked on the promenade opposite the Mermaid which looked very busy so decided that after a walk down to the boating lake (memories of Radio One roadshows) we'd eat at the Mermaid. Reasonably priced at £5.20 for fish and chips and cooked fresh to order but can't help thinking it could have been better (I've certainly had better seaside chips,) note to staff also, clean the tables quicker, made the place look messy

Really thought we were going to get a treat here....Did we eck. Fish chips and peas twice and and fish for our Munty (the dog) that come to 18 pound. Disappointed greasy fish that we could taste all day. Even Munty wasn't fussed to eat it. Like I said it was all fins and tail so wouldn't go again.

Average chippy, not bad in any way, but nothing to special. In a good location and wheelchair accessible, with indoor and outdoor seating at no extra cost. Staff could do with a lesson in customer service though and learn how to listen to their customers and what they are ordering. Would go back again but I think Id rather try somewhere else first.

Stopped by for some Fish and Chips and was greeted by a polite pair of girls who took our order and told us our fish was being cooked fresh to order and once ready even brought it to our table! Food was delicious as always and i wouldn't go anywhere else for my fish and chips!!

Been in today with my family we couldn't eat the food the chips tasted like yesterdays kept warm (very dry, bland, just warm), weak curry sauce, bland sasauge and the tea was warm slightly tea flavoured water. I understand its midweek and end of the season but standards shouldn't slip that far.

Highly recommend, great food and fast service. The fish was fresh and cooked with the skin and was perfectly cooked.Nice to sit and have a sea view too. Recommend the small fish and chips as it was more than enough and with all the extras, we had 2 meals for £10 and felt we had great value for money.

Chips by the sea great food hot. But the service is awful 1 person frying 1 person taking orders and 1 person serving food. 25 minutes from entering to sitting down to eat took 10 minutes from girl taking money to actually being given food yet it was all cooked already
