Delicious food and delivery hot on time! Will definitely eat here again.

Fantastic prawn bhuna. My new go to meal. I have it with fried rice and a garlic naan. It's so good!

Laughable. Popadoms omitted from order. Phoned up and asked for refund on them plus the pickles I’d ordered to go with the popadoms. Refused to refund for pickles. Left it that I’d ordered c£45 of food and they were quibbling over a £3 refund to a reasonably regular customer. An hour later delivery guy turned up with 2 popadoms way after the meal was finished. Ridiculous. Still to be determined as to whether any refund will arrive. Very poor admin and customer service .

I recently ordered takeout via JustEats, and while the Tandoori Tikka Massallam was okay, it wasn’t anything special. It tasted very similar to butter chicken, which made it feel a bit underwhelming. The real disappointment was their Clay Oven's Assorted Tandoori, which I expected to be great since it’s their signature dish. Unfortunately, it was overly salty and too heavily spiced. The sheek kebabs had a dry, powdery texture and didn’t hold together well. Overall, the meal fell short of my expectations.

The Tandoori Tikka Massallam was okay but nothing special, tasting very similar to butter chicken. The Clay Oven's Assorted Tandoori, supposedly their signature dish, was a major letdown. It was overly salty and spiced, with the sheek kababs being dry and powdery. Overall, the meal didn’t live up to expectations, and I won’t be reordering.

Missing 1 Nan bread from order. Assume this was just an oversight. Otherwise food good.

Food was cold, pakoras burned and rock hard, the other meals average and quite salty.

Ordered take out but items missing. Called and we were told 20mins to wait for items but 45 minutes later we were still waiting. Asked for refund of missing items and told they can’t process a refund & items on way to us. Never received but morning after found them on our back doorstep. No one rang our doorbell. Very poor service & won’t be ordering again despite many years as a loyal customer.

For £48 was really hopeful but the food was really disappointing. Similar to other reviews I tried here for a takeaway after my favourite hill station closed. The spiced onions were just a small of onions no garnish, the tsaki had no flavour, the mushroom pilau also had no flavour, every was just screaming our for seasoning. The chicken malayan was also tastless, but the lamb methi was nice......thankfully!! Not worth the money as we left most of it. One positive was it arrived piping hot, just a shame we didn't enjoy it.

We hired the Clay Oven catering service for a birthday party at home and they prepared lots of food, very delicious at a great price to feed 70people. It was delivered hot and started hot for ages. We also have enough frozen for the coming weeks too. Would highly recommend this place.

Been coming to The Clay Oven for many years now, both at its current place and previously when it was also a restaurant at Churchill. The quality of the food never ceases to delight and what ever your taste in Indian food you’ll find something to like here and the staff are always friendly. Highly Recommended.

Placed an order earlier tonight for collection , only had to wait half an hour which was great. Chicken Bhuna, Chicken Korma, Chicken Tikka & Buttered Chicken, Pilau rice and 2 Peshwari Nan. All amazing, good portions and very tasty. Very hot as well which is not always the case when ordering take away’s. Poppadoms we’re good but the onions & Mango sauce were a bit underwhelming. Will definitely be back for more of the curries.

Due to disappointingly discovering that the Hill Station was closed we decided to find a new Indian takeaway. We ordered to full meals and 1 side, all of which I would give 2 out of 10. Butterfly prawn was dry and tasteless, dishes were grainy and not creamy tasting like previous restaurant experiences. You would also think for spending £40+ there would be complimentary poppadoms, maybe times have changed. The “spiced onions” was what I can describe as an 1/8th of an onion with a fraction of garnish and looked as tasty as an equivalent sized tub of sand. Happy to say I won’t be back.

Everything we ordered was absolutely delicious - perfectly spiced for flavour, not just heat. Would highly recommend.

My mate stevie from bensons bar got a curry for both of us two weeks ago, really nice and big portions, we've been back afew times since, food absolutely beautiful..... a must try.

I ate at the restaurant some years ago. It was ok. But I got a delivery from their takeaway a few days ago and it was absolutely lovely. Quick delivery friendly service. Food hot and very tasty. I'll be back for more.

Friendly staff and nice atmosphere. Attended a couple of times where they forgot to put any spice in my madras, so was sat eating basically chicken in a "flat" sauce.

After the closure of my favourite Indian Restraunt in Penicuik "Clippers" I travelled out to the clay oven takeaway. As per usual friendly staff, excellent service and the food was outstanding. So glad I can now get access to my favourite Indian food again.

I ordered a takeaway, but was disappointed with the tone of the guy who called me, very rude and tried to make me look stupid. Delivery driver was an ace though, could just tell he was a very nice guy and was early and even attempted to deliver within the flat building

Second consecutive poor experience dining here, feel disinclined to give them a third attempt to offer the fine service their website mentions. There cant be many Indian Restaurants to be empty at 930 on a Saturday evening. Food tasty enough but service is woeful. One star only because I cant give less.

Reasonably priced, excellent curry with fabulous flavours and quicker than expected delivery but why oh why would you spoil your food with sugar? We had 3 different curries and all were so sweet with sugar or something added that it ruined the meal for me!!

The service was really good and staff are friendly. The food was not the best 😪 prawns were really tough and hot starters were luke warm.

Horrible food and horrible place!!!! These are Bangladeshi people running an Indian restaurant and spoiling the name of Indina food.....the entire food was cooked in used oil and was so so oily .......I had constipation after eating here.....please avoid at any cost

Best Indian food I've had in a long time

We were short of time but they accommodated us well. Main dishes reasonably priced but easy to rack up the costs with extras. Very good and professional staff.

Good restaurant, had 10 £ buffet , worth for money , balanced food both veg and non veg, we are 11 members team enjoyed a lot ,stomach full 😋

Hideous. Lunchtime special in a quiet restaurant is made all the more special when you hear the PING of the microwave ovens. Starters tasted like they were made last week. Generally ghastly. Tired and worn out decor, awful trade music. The sort of place you think died out in 1986.

We just had a lovely dinner! The food was cooked well with fresh vegetables and less oils that you find in other places. We could feel the ingredients. The papadoms were like the home made ones so crispy non fried. And also the naan bread was so tasty again with less oils. Really good time. :)

Been going here on sundays for the all you can eat buffet for months now and they've always had really good service and food. Staff are always friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend!

MANY THANKS TO THE CLAY OVEN FOR AN XMAS DINNER WHICH WILL BE REMEMBERED FOR ALL THE WRONG REASONS! As we entered the restaurant on xmas day we were abrubtly asked if we had booked a table, and the waiter looked most disappointed when we confirmed that we had...another table to serve was obviously too much trouble for him! Each of our meals was disgusting in that the rice was obviously a reheat, the lamb was tough and lacking in flavour and the sauces were revolting. One might think that they couldn`t have gone wrong with a garlic nan, but they even managed to ruin the nan which was not only stale but was minus the garlic! Since at no time did a waiter come and ask if our food was okay, I had to call the owner over and complain. The owner (who was on his way out to do deliveries) was unapologetic,. grabbed my plate off me and said he would arrange a fresh dish of lamb tika masala. By the time this came, my rice and nan bread were stone cold, and by now I was totally put off eating anything. I therefore took the replacement dish home and, since this was also pretty disgusting, put it in the bin! The icing on the cake (or rather lack of it) was when I went to the ladies room. only to discover there was absolutely no toilet paper in the holder, one empty toilet roll end on the cistern and another empty toilet roll end on the rather filthy looking floor , just as well I had some hankies in my bag! IF YOU WANT TO WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THE WORST FOOD IMAGINABLE THEN GO TO THE CLAY OVEN! The owner`s response to my own and other negative reviews regarding our meals on xmas day is indicitive of his general attitude, THE (MANY) UNHAPPY CUSTOMERS ARE ALWAYS WRONG AND THE OWNER IS ALWAYS RIGHT.

WORST MEAL EVER....RUINED MY XMAS DAY! I`ve been going to this restaurant for years, and noticed lately that the food hasn`t been so good. They definitely got the prize for the WORST FOOD EVER this xmas day! The muglia saag I ordered as a starter was half the usual size, and the king prawn biryani comprised of reheated rice, prawns which were undercooked and tasteless, and a tiny portion of sauce which was an insufficient amount for the dish. The owner has stated he gave me a replacement dish which is a complete lie; when my mother called him over when he was on his way out to do a delivery, despite the fact I had only eaten about a third of my dish, he totally ignored my complaint. My mother threw the replacement dish she was given in the bin when she went home, as by that time she felt quite ill. The Clay Oven has lost a loyal customer, WOULD NEVER GO BACK SUPPOSING THEY WERE GIVING ME THE FOOD FOR FREE !

REVOLTING......and that`s being kind! Ordered a lamb chatkora and mushroom pilau rice, the lamb wasn`t cooked properly, hadn`t been marinated, and the seasoning comprised of an excess of coarse chilli powder. The rice tasted like a reheat, was overcooked and swimming in grease. The whole meal was disgusting, and the service in the run down looking restaurant was rude and abrupt, despite the fact it was xmas day. Would never go back, and wouldn`t recommend to my worst enemy! The owner has stated in his reply that I finished my meal. Given that he was totally unaplogetic and refused to give me a replacement dish ( even although my partner had complained to him when I was less than half way through my meal) I had no choice but to eat most of it since I was very hungry and was going straight to the hospital to visit a relative. It is quite evident from the owner`s unapologetic attitude that he thinks he can treat his customers with contempt.....avoid at all cost! PS I WOULD BE VERY WARY OF GOOD REVIEWS OF THIS RESTAURANT, ESP ONES WHERE THE AUTHOR HAS ONLY EVER WRITTEN 1 OR 2 REVIEWS!!

Awful food . Never going again. Every curry tasted same order three different one all same. Not even cooked properly not seasoned.

Excellent food service a bit disorganised

Definitely the best curry house in morningside that I have been to. They do a cracking lunch deal, which is probably the best time to visit. As usual, the side dishes are very filling, and probably not needed alongside a main curry.

One of the best curry houses in edinburgh, can compete with anywhere else in edinburgh for the best food while offering it at a better price, and great service from Javed! Can't rate this place enough and I've had a fair few Currys in my time!

We got some takeaway, two different meals that turned out to have exactly the same sauce, no fresh vegetables whatsoever. Meat was fatty and with some random hard bits! Ugh we will never go back.

In the past, I'd have said their dishes were on the spicy side of ideal, but more recently we've had a series of altogether great meals from the Clay oven.

Have just been tonight for dinner and drinks with a large group of people. The food was wonderful and the staff were so accommodating - we started off as 8 and then upped to 11 last minute but it was no bother to them, fair play. Possibly the best Indian food had in Edinburgh in a long while. We shall be back for sure - again in a large group. Would strongly recommend this restaurant. The worst main dishes I’ve had in an Indian restaurant. Oily and bland. The korma tasted like a coconut cake. Both dishes were mushy with over cooked/ reheated soggy vegetables.We ordered the £6.95,3 course lunch and a beer to share. People carried rubbish and laundry through the restaurant whilst we ate dripping liquid in the floor. Ate rice as the mains were so poor.We were given a portion of Samosa’s ‘ on the house sir’ as they incorrectly gave us 2 portions of Pakoras for our staters.Staff were odd and overly attentive at times. This may have been as we were th only people in the restaurant.Went to pay expecting to pay £6.95 x 2 and for a beer at around £4.We didn’t stay for dessert. He totaled it up and added numerous £2.50 charges. It came to £24.80. I paid and knowing I’d been ripped off in various ways left. Sad but we were The only people in the restaurant so that’s probably why. My partner has cooked and worked in an Indian restaurant. My business colleagues are Indian and we dine out in Melbourne at great Indian restaurants. I’ve eaten at Indian restaurants all over the world but these dishes were like microwaved curries.Unfortunately, this was our first meal in Edinburgh for 6 years and it was embarrassing.I was in the food and beverage Industry for years in Edinburgh and did secret diner reports for a 5 site restaurant/ bar chain.It seems that the standard of food in Edinburgh is still on a much lower level than other cities in the world.

This is a really lovely little restaurant. It is warm and cosy inside, not a huge place but really welcoming and the staff are all really friendly and nice. They gave us plenty of time to peruse the menu, which you need as there are so many options to choose from! The food itself is amazingly good, and I can say hands down that the naan bread there is the best I've ever had! The staff members checked with us several times in case we wanted any more drinks or to see if we were enjoying our meal, but not in an obtrusive way at all. Definitely will be going back here again, and if you are thinking about trying it I would very much recommend that you do!

Reasonable price but food was awful

Always fantastic food, excellent service. They do a wide range of dishes, with something for everyone. Although I've been several times, I've only ever been as part of a fairly large group, and they've always been very good at dealing with the number of people we've brought along.

My family and I are new to Edinburgh and found this restaurant some months back. Since then we enjoy our family evenings every week in Clay Oven. The food is amazing and the service is second to none. In particular I want to thank Javed and Avinash who provide us the BEST service and attention to detail. So if your in or near Morningside absolutely pay a visit to this amazing and unbelievable restaurant.

Just moved into the area and thought we'd try the Clay Oven based on some positive reviews. A lot of the negative reviews focused on rude staff- this was absolutely not the case when we ordered our takeaway, the staff were polite and attentive. Unfortunately that is where our positive experience ended. I don't like slating someones business but equally I am giving them my money, so I take no apologies for my rather scathing review. In short, I'm sorry to say, this was the WORST Indian takeaway we have ever had in our 10 years in Edinburgh. The food was dreadful. Onion bhaji's like cardboard to start. Main course was Chicken Madras and Tikka Massalam. Both dishes had an unusually amount of flaky, overcooked chicken in a runny, utterly tasteless sauce. The inconsistency and shear volume of the chicken had me slightly alarmed. Some chicken had holes through the middle, obviously from being on the skewer, some didn't, some was clearly breast, others thighs- all in all, it tasted vile. However, the absolute worst thing was the rice. How can an Indian restaurant not cook rice?! It was complete mush. Literally like baby food. I could have let the mains slide, yes, they were awful and probably wouldn't even have written a review but the rice just completely ruined the whole meal. Everything was so overcooked I wouldn't have even had to use my blender to turn it into a soup. I don't know if they were having an off day, but we will certainly never be ordering from them again and will not be recommending them to any of our guests.

3 courses for £6.95 the best pakora I've had anywhere. The chilli sauce is beautiful. Also enjoy the curry usual have a bhuna. Had a Madras today to chase away the cold. The chicken was lovely and tender. My colleague enjoyed the lamb.

Great food and quick service (even with delivery). Perfect for a nice night out or a night in.

Absolutely atrocious and despicable experience. - Food ordered did not arrive till after 30 mins delay. No one in the restaurant had any clue. - Food was not even proper Indian food (more like Bangladeshi trying to pass as Indian) - Ordered through Hungryhouse....app - No update, no call - Staff did not even know my address - Had to spak to 3 different people including the owner and each person simply tried to pass the buck - Never order home delivery for sure - My first and only time of trying to have an Indian meal in Edinburgh. What a far cry in the name of taste (read tasteless), inefficient and sloppy service....

Traditional Indian restaurant, with all the usual selections. Clean and welcoming, with friendly staff. Can get busy at the weekends, but never to an off-putting degree.

This restaurant serves some really good curry in a friendly and welcoming environment. The staff are attentive, polite and knowledgeable. The menu is varied without being overbearing. The food itself is of a high standard. I very much recommend The Clay Oven to anybody looking for a good, well priced curry in the Morningside area.

I have been for lunch several times. This is a solid, normal, Indian restaurant.

My new go to takeaway for the Southside of Edinburgh. Food is delicious and always receive friendly service from the drivers. Expect a long waiting time for take aways on the prime nights, Friday Saturday. But well worth it.

Lovely meal. Lovely setting, though could maybe do with being a bit more spaced out. Is on the spicy side, so bear that in mind when ordering. Good portion sizes, and good value for a meal out.

Great, reasonably priced takeaway. The Clay Oven is our Indian of choice for a takeaway. Decent sized portions, good selection and not too oily. Having never eaten in the restaurant, I can't comment on that but if you're after a Friday night in front of the telly with some guilty food, bob is your father's brother.
