A return visit for the first time in 8 years. For context we got married here 8 years ago and it was just outstanding in every way. We chose to have our wedding here after randomly stumbling across this place whilst walking (we live over an hour away). This time we were at a wedding in Threshfield and decided to pay a visit, stay over and have some memories. We arrived around 8pm to check in and was met with a busy and bustling pub full of families, couples some eating and some drinking. We were welcomed and shown to our room. Shortly after we came back down for a few drinks. A good night's sleep was had and we slept like logs. Breakfast was fantastic and hearty, the toast top-notch. Overall a wonderful inviting pub which every tme we return just makes us smile. Thank you guys. See you again soon 🤩

We are fairly local to Hebden but this was our first trip to the Clarendon for lunch. It was outside of tourist season and a Friday lunch. On the approach to the pub appeared dark but the door was open and to be fair the young man behind the bar was friendly enough. The pub was in complete silence and with the exception of a harsh light above the bar counter every other light was switched off and you needed a fleece. There was one other French couple finishing up, we are regulars to France and I wonder what they must have thought! One of the public rooms visible to the whole premises had been turned into an office with clutter on the floor, the spin dryer was whirring away in the background, it was more a house than pub. The food thank goodness was fine but after a short time the single member of staff left in his car leaving us alone in the bar / restaurant. He came back after 10-15 minutes and as he came in was shouting expletives on his phone, the odd F word etc. As the food was fine I’m giving it 2 starts but my goodness, in every other respect it was a complete shambles. Dark, cold, silent and completely unwelcoming. The interior was tired and the historic culinary awards seemed long gone, what a tragic shame. It had all the hallmarks of a business in its dying days. I only hope it’s different on weekends or evenings but in the week, don’t expect too much!

Received a warm welcome. A great country pub serving excellent food to a high standard. The menu is predominantly game food, however, we had the local lamb which was delicious. Well worth a visit.

We ate here during our stay in nearby Burnsall and were impressed by the whole experience. The staff were friendly and welcoming, the drinks were reasonably priced and the food was excellent, especially the gammon steak which was cooked to perfection. Perhaps our only observation would be that the toilets are in need of a refurb.

A great country pub serving good food, the service was very friendly and efficient. There is a good selection on the menu, we chose the sausage & mash and the beef pie, both were excellent. I would recommend booking a table as it is a very popular.

A pleasant pub with attentive service, but the thing that made this a five-star experience was the game, which was out of this world. The venison and rabbit were to die for.

Walked over from Grassington for lunch. Sat outside in the sunshine. Ordered a fish sandwich and a pork and stuffing sandwich. Both came in a fresh, soft ciabatta and were served with chips and a side salad. Both sandwiches were delicious and the portions were very generous with plenty of fish/pork, making them fantastic value for money. The staff, as always, were polite and attentive. We would highly recommend.

Very comfortable and enjoyable stay in a beautiful part of the world. We came here for a one night stay so we could enjoy walking in the beautiful countryside. The owner Lionel was very welcoming and the food is made by his son who is a classically trained chef. The standard of food is high quality and local produce too. We had some lovely dishes. Breakfast was also very good. I could highly recommend a stay here and I’m sure we will be returning soon.

My wife and I have just returned from a wonderful few days in Hebden we rented a cottage next door to the Clarendon so spent most evenings after exploring the local areas in the Pub , the food is sublime and cooked with passion , if you like Game with a hint of French fine dining this place is for you , if game isn't your cup of tea then there is plenty of other delights to choose from , the beers are all really good also and the staff are all great especially the manager Josh who is a really welcoming chap , thank you Clarendon for making our stay in the Yorkshire Dales extra special will definitely be returning.

Popped in for a pot of tea after a walk down from Grassington so can’t comment anymore than on their brew which was very welcoming and refreshing after our trek! Intriguing sign outside saying they’d won the national game eating awards so mentioned this to the very engaging Aussie girl at the bar and she told us the background to this plus let us look at the menu! If we hadn’t had just had a big breakfast that morning we’d have stayed for lunch as the menu was sounded amazing - partridge, pheasant, duck & venison aplenty! We’ll definitely be back to eat there at some point!

We have heard many things about this place, all of them being good! Both and myself & my partner love game, and with 'The Clarendon' recently winning an award for their game cookery, we couldn't think of a better place to go!! Let me tell you, we were not disappointed. I had the Partridge to start and then the Grouse for Mains.. both dishes were cooked to perfection. The 2 girls who were on shift serving were both brilliant aswell. Both friendly, smiley and very good at what they do! We will deffo be back and recommending this lovely little spot to all our friends !!!

Apparently my review was taken down as I’m not allowed to mention individual staff- Sad really because the establishment as a whole may be better than this particular staff member - I’ll try again. This place was just awful. I’ve never had a waitress/ bar staff behave in such a way. She was so snippy and unwelcoming. We are not sensitive by any means but good lord it was just awful. If you want to be patronized, talked down to and feel generally unwelcome, stop by. Or you could do yourself a favor and go to the tea room around the corner - The food is great and the staff are friendly and very welcoming.

Oh dear what a disappointment. 6 ladies of a certain age (I say this because it was insinuated we hadn't read the menu properly) quote 'oh dear should have maybe given you ladies more time' grrrr. Anyway my lamb a la carte was fine although think they could have maybe spared more caramilised onion there was half of a quarter. 2 of my friends had a mushroom option dish which was fairly sparse with food and didn't include a full mushroom. My friend said it was disappointing and was offered a side dish but at no time did the head of service come over to talk to her. We were brushed off basically. So just don't go unless you want a la carte with not much food. The main menu was fine.

My wife sat outside at a table and I went inside to look for a menu. I couldn’t see any on display. There was a lady serving a gentleman a drink at the bar, nobody else waiting. I was not acknowledged. I asked “excuse me, could you point me to the menus please “ the lady replied that she was “just serving this gentlemen then I would have her undivided attention”, in a tone that suggests I was rude to politely enquire about a menu. I replied smiling and said it was unlikely I’d need her undivided attention, thinking this might bring a smile. She then replied “well, perhaps some patience then” ! I said nothing, turned around and left. We had a lovely lunch at The Old Hall in Threshfield 5 minutes away. Staff there even enquired how they could help ! Terrible attitude. If only they had menus on display the lady wouldn’t have to get so annoyed that someone dare enquire after one. Avoid.

Me and my partner stayed here for 4 nights with our dog as a little break away. We had a slight issue with our room size on arrival but this was swiftly dealt with by staff and we were moved (we have a large dog). Our Main room was large, bright and airy, with a very large, comfortable bed. The only slight niggles were lack of plug sockets especially by the bed as only 2 the other side of room, noisy toilet (air flow system used), towel rail hanging off slightly and TV Ariel touch and go plus lack of lighting around mirrors for anyone that wears makeup you’ll understand. It would also be ideal to have an extra shelf in the bathroom and/or shower for your toiletries as only shelf is taken up with complimentary toiletries which is a nice touch but leaves no room for your own and blocks mirror. None of these are deal breakers of course just minor preferences and can be attributed to what is a very old building (1800/1900’s). The staff here are exceptional, especially Tess and Matt who couldn’t do enough for us and made us feel very welcome indeed. The bar area is quaint and relaxed with a good drinks and food selections. We ate a couple of times here and the food was exquisite. I do think the drinks are overpriced though coming in at £10.40 for a large glass of standard rose wine which is central London prices in Yorkshire which I struggled to get my head round, in all fairness we visited 5 villages/towns in the time we were there and all were charging roughly the same with a pint anywhere up to £6.50, as we were on holiday it didn’t really bother us but good to know if your on a budget. We visited Grassington, a lovely place a couple of miles up the round with a good locals feel, good selection of cafes, pubs and restaurants. Very pretty. Skipton town like any town with standard shops etc but worth a visit to the castle. There are various little villages we visited all dotted around but our favourite day out was Ingleton falls which is about an hours drive away and beautiful. 6 waterfalls round a 4 mile area. All in all we had a lovely break and ideal for walking/hiking enthusiasts, very dog friendly with rolling countryside in every direction. TIP - this is a very rural area with no local shops for newspapers etc, the closest shop is approximately couple of miles away

We are spoilt with great restaurants in Ilkley, but we’ve been planning to try the Clarendon inn for a while and definitely will be back soon! Certainly a cut above normal pub food , but in a relaxed non pretentious pub setting. Elderflower spritzer with their home made elderflower cordial was a great start. And hubby impressed by his pint of ale. What really sets it apart though is the quality of the locally sourced ingredients and seasonal dishes. Delicious trout tartar, a hearty roast beef with obviously well aged local beef and giant yorkshire pud. Followed by plum crumble & custard - perfect for a dismal wet Sunday afternoon. Impressive selection of red wine by glass. Can’t wait to come back for a good pie & chips after long walk at Grimwith reservoir.

The rooms had everything you needed for a comfortable stay. As we had a taxi booked at 7am the staff organised cereal, fruit and toast for us to start our day. They do not normally do any breakfast until later. So extra thanks for that 😊 The food in the evening was outstanding. A small menu, but over the 2 night stay we all chose something different. No complaints about anything. All freshly cooked and well presented. Please do not hesitate to stay here if given the chance. We would definitely stay again. We called in for drinks today sitting outside just before opening. One of us took out a sandwich whilst waiting for the friend to buy the lady who opened the pub came out waving a pointed finger at us and in a very loud voice yelled that this wasn’t a picnic area and we were NOT to eat our own food. That would have been acceptable if she had just told us in a polite way but to be so aggressive is not. We called the friend out telling him not to buy drinks and left. There would have been twenty other ramblers coming in for drinks but after telling them what happened they went elsewhere.

We booked the Clarendon for a couple of nights as a little "Get Away"! The welcome was excellent and the weather was glorious, so we enjoyed a couple of refreshing drinks on the terrace outside before walking down the vale to the River Wharfe suspension bridge. On returning we enjoyed a tradional roast dinner and another couple of drinks before settling in for the night. The room was spacious and clean and we slept well. The breakfast was amazing, using a lot of locally sourced ingredients and was cooked to perfection! During the day/afternoon we walked to Grassington and back (about 40 minutes each way & highly recommended). On the second evening we chose from the main menu. Each and every dish was delicious and generous. All in all it was a fantastic stay and the service was the perfect mix of friendly and professional. Therefore I have no hesitation in highly recommending The Clarendon.

We booked to eat here and were unimpressed with the food: both the quality and price. Sadly, we also thought that the pub had no atmosphere. The owner (?) walked into the pub without his mask during our July visit, which was extraordinary!Steak and ale pie had the thinnest pastry crust that I have ever seen stretched across the top of the container and the liquid inside the bowl was thin and not very appetising. To be fair the meat was tender, but there was not enough of it to justify the price (or fill the dish). The chips served with the pie were strangely hard at each end and certainly inedible. Peas were quite tasty!

We have just returned from a night away at the Clarendon. We'd remembered it from driving past and thought it would make a good base for exploring the area (which is beautiful, by the way). The pub was still closed when we arrived, preparing to open for the evening, and the front door was opened with such a lovely smile of welcome. The staff were all wonderful, very friendly and attentive, and nothing was too much trouble. Typical old Yorkshire pub inside - we were taken to our room, 'The Pheasant', which was spotlessly clean and thoughtfully equipped. The bed was extremely comfortable and we had a good night's sleep after walking to Grassington and back along the river. We decided to have our evening meal here, having been tempted by the menu. The food was beautiful. My husband had the Onglet a l’echalote - yes, I did have to copy and paste! - French cut steak in a Bordelaise sauce with gratin Dauphinois and green vegetables and I opted for fish, chips and mushy peas, followed by creme brulee. All of it was excellent. My husband is also a fan of real ale and was pleased to find that the beers were well kept. He enjoyed Tim Taylor's Boltmaker and also a very good guest ale from Wensleydale Brewery. I sampled the extensive range of gins. We were both relieved to find that the Clarendon was observing strict hygiene and adhering to covid measures - now that we are starting to spend nights away again this is incredibly important to us. We felt very safe. We've found our new favourite pub with rooms.

During Covid times, there is hand sanitiser as soon as you walk in, they book tables in advance which are all well-spaced apart, and they have plenty of outdoor seating. In spite of all the supply/staffing challenging COVID and lockdown must had thrown up, the Clarendon continues to serve up great food to happy customers. In particular, grouse (shot locally the previous day) was absolutely delicious, and a dish of local trout in a heavenly lobster sauce/soup was among the best things I've ever tasted. The service is brilliant – friendly and very knowledgeable, hugely reassuring if you need to avoid certain ingredients due to allergies or other issues. Really interesting, well-priced wines, too. The owner, Lionel, went over and above to help me arrange surprise flowers for the room and was a lovely host throughout. The rest of the staff were friendly and helpful too, making us feel instantly at home. The pub itself was wonderful, it is obviously still much loved and used by the local community as a true 'country pub', but for us the outstanding quality of the food made us feel we were dining in a swanky city restaurant. It was instantly obvious why The Clarendon and it's chefs have won so many awards. We ate here both nights and were blown away by the food. Two of the tastiest meals I have ever eaten, locally sourced and perfectly presented. The breakfasts were generous and also delicious, again clearly made using locally sourced, quality ingredients. The room, whilst having some things removed due to Covid Guidance, was charming, clean and comfortable, retaining it's country feel with views over the gorgeous local scenery. We would definitely stay here again, and have even talked about making the 2.5 hour round trip just to eat here one evening.I rarely write reviews, but had such a wonderful time at The Clarendon that I felt obliged to pass on my compliments and thanks to Lionel and all the staff. I'm really going to struggle to top this next year though. On a side-note, the weather was dry so our boots didn't get muddy. If they had though, we wouldn't have been offended at all taking them off to prevent the carpets being ruined unlike the handful of people leaving bad reviews for being politely asked to do something that seems like common sense to me.

Just got back from a gorgeous few days staying in this quaint village and have got to mention the local pub we went each night for food. The warm friendly welcome and excellent menu choice made it difficult to decide but for me once the special was mentioned ‘their own fish pie’ and have got to say it was mouth watering soo much so we went back next night and I had the same. We would highly recommend you visit and sample the quality of the food and friendliness that welcomes you.

We’re delighted that we recently stumbled across this local friendly pub when sheltering from the floods. We received a very warm welcome from the staff at the Clarendon and enjoyed a fantastic meal. We’ve since returned a a couple of times - the food is amazing, the wine list is excellent and there’s always a good atmosphere.

We called in for a drink and food - a party of 10 on a very wet day. We were NOT made to feel welcome. Boots to be taken off at the door, snapped at for stoking the fire, stuffy atmosphere. Not what you’d expect from a country pub. My advice is go to the lovely licensed tea room opposite or bypass and walk on for a mile or so for one of the friendly pubs in Grassington. Clearly only want fine diners.

We went for an evening meal here as a family of 5. All but 1 of the meals were delicious! Well presented and nice decent sized portions. However one of us ordered the lamb. This came out not as expected. It was more of a fine dining dish (ie beautifully presented but small) and served with a bowl of boiled veg. Just not in keeping with the rest of the meals. The person who ordered the lamb felt that for the money, they hadn’t got what they paid for. Just a little bit of constructive criticism for the managers .... if you are going to serve fine dining dishes then that’s great (but a bowl of boiled veg doesn’t suffice) as is serving good traditional pub food. But you can’t mix the two together. Four of us sat at the table with decent sized pub dishes and one person sat with a tiny fine dining dish and a bowl of boiled veg (very miss matched) It just didn’t make sense really. Plus the poor individual who had the fine dining dish left still hungry. I would have put this as a 4-5 star eatery as most of us enjoyed our meals. However, as one of our party left unsatisfied I feel we can only award 3 stars. Keep to the traditional pub grub in future as that’s what you do best.

Went here for dinner and what a treat we had!The menu was full of choices to meet every dietary need. The local game was heavily featured as it was shooting season. I had the wild duck and it was superb, wife had fish and chips and raved about them as well( and she ‘s a Yorkshire lass who knows her fish and chips!)Family friend had steak pie which was stuffed full of lean beautifully braised meat. Vegetables nicely done. Great wine list to accompany your meal.Couldn’t manage desserts......but meal for three about £100.00 including nearly 2 bottles of wine. Excellent

We had 2 evening meals here whilst visiting the Dickensian Christmas market in Grassington. The first evening our meal, which was chosen from the ‘Specials’ menu, was well presented and delicious. The service was good. Unfortunately, the 2nd evening was really quite poor. It was more than half an hour before our table was cleared and wiped and our orders taken. We expected it to be as good as the previous evening but when our food eventually arrived, both our meals were only luke warm and the portion of vegetables to share between the 2 of us was tiny. We told the waiter when he came to clear our plates but he didn’t seem interested and certainly didn’t apologise. It wasn’t cheap, so for what we paid, we were very disappointed and will most likely choose one of the other eateries in the area next time. What a shame.

We booked a table for an evening meal, and the barman instantly spotted who we were (despite the bar being very busy) and guided us to our table and offered to take our drinks order. The food looked appetising when it arrived. Four of us had the pheasant, which was very nice, if not a huge portion, and the roast potatoes were scrummy. One of our group was vegetarian, and chose the 'cassoulet'. This was rather disappointing, being just a pile of beans and vegetables, which was not served in a cassoulet pot. I guess it doesn't translate well into a vegetarian dish.We were served two small bowls of cauliflower, cabbage and carrots for five of us. The barman took pity on us and found us another bowl of veg, and gave the vegetarian a tiny ramekin of dauphinoise potatoes. We weren't really bowled over by the meal but it was adequate (and therefore quite pricey for what we had). The staff were friendly, and overall we enjoyed our visit.

I have been very fortunate to previously work in hospitality and enjoy some fine dinning experiences, and this charming pub with accommodation is right up there. The restaurant currently has 1 AA rosette, well based on my experience if this was served in London it would be 3 and Michelin would be knocking on the door. The first night the Venison was simply stunning and second night the lamb, one of the best I have had in a very long time.Lionel and his team have created a highly affordable truly exceptional menu that suits all tastes and budgets. As a team we stayed in the village for 2 nights and the pub was our hub. I was fortunate enough to stay in the hotel, beautifully presented room with all the comfortable extras that you would associate with a 4 - 5 star hotel.I would highly recommended that you check this great pub, restaurant and accommodation out.

Went twice during third week of Sept. Visited three years ago when first under new management, & most impressed. This time round, it was painfully understaffed both visits. As so often the case in catering industry, you feel the management have lost enthusiasm & left overworked staff to pick up pieces. The first time we visited, on a Monday night, there were 3 employees trying to run bar, restaurant & cater for overnight guests. Our drinks were forgotten, main course turned up with no veg, & dessert menu never arrived. Second visit not much better.Advice to owners; stop worrying about your next venture, & concentrate on making this one the best around, you can't do everything!

I have to say the food was excellent and the wine was a good quality. The price was responsible. The atmosphere in the pub was very good however the local(regulars) were hogging the bar and the language was a little course at times also there was a dog yapping with no attempt by the owner to shut it up. I was not the only customer that found this annoying. I would go again I like the place.

We had originally booked to eat at the Clarendon on one evening of our 9 days in the area. We returned 4 times and were never disappointed. The quality of the food was outstanding (and yes, kale was the veg that appeared most evenings). The service from the staff matched the food in terms of friendliness, attentiveness and overall desire to ensure that we had a great evening. The chef knows how to prepare and cook game and although we never tried it, the fish and chips received great reviews from other people. Tried Yorkshire wine but preferred the local ales - of which they had a good selection. The portions were large (truly a bucket of rhubarb crumble) and we never left without feeling happy, satisfied and wanting to return again, and again. Sincere thanks to all.

Menu states: "The Clarendon has been the home of the Hebden Ghyll shoot since 1812; we continue to this day to support our local shoot." When we booked our room I never realised this and I believe that intensive grouse shooting is bad for people, the environment and wildlife. I therefore felt trapped in another time when I became aware that this place supported it and I hardly slept a wink. All food locally sourced does not mean that it is good for the environment or kind to the animals.

Visited this place three times last week. The only place to eat if staying in Hebden in the evening. That is the only reason we ate there. First two meals overpriced pub grub. Third visit awful, vegetables for two included one medium sized potato cut into four pieces. I thought this was food shortage due to Brexit. When the guy asked if everything was OK,i pointed out the veg situation. He did offer us some more which we took even then the kale was so tough I spat it out. Our plate for this meal was £16 each. This was overpriced, woman next to us had rabbit, this looked like a few bones on a plate at£20 I was glad that I never ordered that. The irony is that rabbits can be see 50yards from their carpark. If you want to be fleeced go to this pub.

Stayed just around the corner. Well used pub/restaurant by locals and tourists. Visited a number of times and got a friendly welcome with well kept beer. Had evening meal twice during our stay. Chef/Patron has worked across Europe in Michelin starred restaurants and this shows in the quality and presentation of the food. Normal pub prices and very reasonable. Menu focusses on game/local produce but pub classics and vegetarian menu are also available.

3 night stay in a friendly country pub in the beautiful surroundings of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. We were pleasantly surprised to find a menu with the usual pub favourites but also a selection of unusual and delicious dishes cooked by expert chefs. The landlord is French and his passion for fresh local produce and making all the elements in his kitchen produces high quality dishes. I loved the warm sourdough bread and the game dishes. I recommend a room at the back of the pub if you want quiet as the road can be busy. Dogs are welcome.

Hotel staff friendly and helpful, food good well above average for pub food. Good selection of drinks. We paid for a superior double with shower, if this is what we got I am glad I had the upgrade, because the shower room was very small and not easy to dry yourself after having a shower. Other than that well done Clarendon.

Found this pub, by total accident.. the food was fantastic. I’m surprised that we were able to get a table without making a reservation. My starter of pheasant was amazing, smoked breast, terrine and liver pate which was exquisite. The roast sirloin of beef was excellent served either pink or well done, it was tender enough to be cut with a butter knife. The roast pork was delicious and a children’s portion was good value, as was the Sunday 2 course. A good selection of wine, the Malbec was perfect. Will go again, worth the travel from Leeds!

Stayed at The Lister Arms for a couple of nights mid week. We stayed in the Lister Barn which is a 2 minute walk from the actual pub. Cosy and warm, tastefully decorated with lovely toiletries - a real gem of a place. The main pub is really cosy, with a gorgeous fire burning all day and evening. Breakfast and dinner here were both really good with large portions. Lots of dogs inside the bar area too which was lovely. Staff were friendly and helpful. Would definitely return.

Fantastic place. Roll with bacon and sausage was lovely. Really good quality ingredients and perfectly cooked. Friendly staff and great atmosphere. I've been coming here on caving trips for 25 years and always either start or finish the day in Inglesport. Love it. The only thing I'd say... bring back the pints of tea!!! And please don't ever stop doing the tiffin, it is the best on the planet.

On arrival the pub does not inspire confidence in the quality of food - but it was really very good. I was dubious about the sizes of sunday roasts after reading a previous review - and to be fair, the plates do not arrive loaded with masses of veg or mash. However, we all left feeling satisfied and it really felt like well prepared, high quality food. The steak and ale pie, and steak and ale yorkie had the same filling, which was superb.
