On arrival the pub does not inspire confidence in the quality of food - but it was really very good. I was dubious about the sizes of sunday roasts after reading a previous review - and to be fair, the plates do not arrive loaded with masses of veg or mash. However, we all left feeling satisfied and it really felt like well prepared, high quality food. The steak and ale pie, and steak and ale yorkie had the same filling, which was superb.

Had an amazing Sunday lunch there last week. The food was lovely, there was so much we were totally stuffed. I would definitely recommend this pub for a Sunday roast, I would also book in advance as it does get busy. Thanks to Sue and her team for another lovely afternoon.

We ordered 4 Sunday roasts here (£9.95 each) and after a walk across the moors, we were really looking forward to a hearty home cooked, traditional meal. We were therefore bewildered when our roasts arrived and we were presented with a teaspoon of mashed potato each, a solitary swirl of cabbage and a sad little leek. The beef, to be fair, was lovely but where was the rest of the meal? The cook sat in the garden and we heard her say to the waitress that there were no more roasts left. We can therefore only assume that they had run out of veg and instead of telling us this, had decided to try and spread what was left out into 4 meals. On payment, we enquired about this and whether we’d been given small roasts instead-an option on the menu. The cook/landlady then proceeded to publicly berate us for ‘wanting something for nothing’ and then inexplicably began shouting at other customers who were keeping themselves to themselves and trying to enjoy their bar meals, ‘Have you had enough?’ ‘Have you?’ ‘What about you?’ putting the fear of god into anyone who was considering requesting a splash more gravy. This lady clearly does not respond well to any kind of criticism and confirmed this by offering us a 57p refund. After a few raised eyebrows, she grudgingly agreed to a fiver knocked off and with that, we hastily retreated to the local Spar for a family pack bag of cheese and onion crisps vowing never to darken the door of The Horse and Farrier again. The quality of the food was good. The quantity, unfortunately, was not. We will not be back.

The food was always lovely but just like the last reviewer has commented It’s honestly the nicest fish and chips I’ve eaten in a very long time. And my family loved the Gammon, the pie… everything. The menu seems a little refined too and it works really, really well. Hats off to the new Chef! If anyone reading this is planning on going Be sure to book as the tables go fast and you can honestly see why. But if you are in the area, maybe at the caravan site down the road, I’d deffo make this my first stop. Thank you to Sue and the team!!!

The food is better than ever. So glad to actually get out and about. Had fish and chips and I know it was very nice before but I don’t recall it tasting this amazing. So fresh, crisp, clean and tasty. We also had gammon and Pizzas and they were better than ever. You simply HAVE to visit and support this pub/restaurant it’s so homely and nice. Covid has changed things but the food is simply better than ever since it reopened, not sure why but keep it up. It’s working.

Typical pub food at reasonable prices, accompanied by decent beer. Very satisfied. Asked “is everything all right with your meal” (so 2000), heard the words “no problem” too many times, and served tom ketchup in plastic sachets (horrid). Accept pets, which is completely redeeming. I’d recommend it.

I ate here again last week and the food was as exceptional as always. There is no better place to visit than here when you are in the area. ALL The staff are amazing, each one of them is so friendly and attentive. Obviously people are nervous during Covid but if you have yet to visit a pub/restaurant because you are worried of the covid situation, I can honestly say I have been here a few times and nowhere makes you feel safer than 'The Horse and Farrier'. It is all nicely spaced out, and everything is worked out perfectly to keep everyone safe. The food is second to non, cooked by the Famous Local Chef Gail and overseen by the Lovely Sue, each mouthful is an absolute JOY! If you are looking for a fantastic place to unwind and enjoy your night, then be assured this is the place to go and you will find no better in Bentham. No one knows what is happening at the moment with lockdown rule changes at every turn - so Support your local pubs, support the BEST pubs..... Support THIS PUB! We often stay at the caravan site at Riverside and booked this pub after an atrocious meal at the Black Bull up the road earlier in the week. The landlady was lovely on the phone and really made an effort to squeeze us in with a booking on the patio (socially distancing of course) She came to sit at the table at the side chatting to some regulars who we had also been chatting to and seemed a little wary as I said I was going to write a review about the atrocious experience at the Black Bull up the road. I rarely complain, but perhaps she was worried that I was a 'negative reviewer'. She had no need to worry. The food at the Horse and Farrier was absolutely lovely. We had the Blue Cheese mushroom starter, it was the nicest I have ever had. The main course we had ribs and air both lovely. All the food came hot and fresh. The young girl serving was really pleasant. Unfortunately we managed to get our dog lead wrapped around something and broke a glass she was completely understanding Thank you for a lovely meal and making effort to accommodate our booking!!!

The measures in place and distanced tables are very good. The food was superb as always. I had fish & chips, my wife had chicken and our children ate from the kids menu! Best pint of real ale I’ve had this year. We are booked in again this Thursday, definitely the best food in High Bentham!

Well its That Pub!. The food is amazing. The 'Cheese PIE' O.M.G!!!!! The MENU looks that good I could just eat the paper it is printed on. I cannot rate this pub high enough. Very good pub food as always . We went for our usual evening meal and have been about 12-14 times this year... it’s pub food , hot , tasty and ample portions , served by very attentive and friendly staff in a warm cosy atmosphere. Then you suddenly see two strange negative reviews on this website , and wonder ‘ hey up what’s gone wrong here ‘ ... but in reality you know it can’t be right ??But then you remember , one or two establishments nearby have recently changed hands and need custom , and what better way to attract it than , putting down the local competition .Don’t be fooled folks , if you want nice pub grub , this is the place to go .

Unpleasant experienceStopped off for dinner with my Partner and ordered our evening meal. The waiter was a young lad who was both polite and pleasant. The starter came promptly, but it was disappointing and was followed by our main courses. On returning one of the poor meals ( pork ribs) to the waiter, he returned to the table offering an alternate meal, my partner said she would have another meal and pay the difference in price but to hold on the accompanying chips as she had some supplementary chips left after earlier advising the waiter that the portion was too small (a tiny handful) to which he apologised and bought an additional bowl to the table. No more than a couple of minutes later a women appeared at the table clutching a menu. I assume she was the landlady by the way she spoke to my partner. She proceeded to voice that it was a waste of food and that my partner had left her chips on the plate that was returned. It was at this point that we had both had enough and my partner told her to forget the replacement meal and now just refund us as we want to leave. The lady was extremely unpleasant and walked off to the bar. We stood at the bar and waited whilst the lady then left the bar and walked to the front of the bar to chat to another lady on a stall in front of the bar. After requesting a refund for a 2nd time she returned to the bar and handed over the cost of the meal begrudgingly. Dinning out is meant to be a pleasurable experience, however when bound around poor hospitality and rude customer care skills it’s extremely sad. Will not be returning or ever recommending this pub.

A little on the old fashioned side and tailored for the older clients I suspect but a great little place to escape to for a few hours. Poor, she eventually left this. The puddings were nice, one was cold. Finally, our coffee was again COLD. The place was musty, dinghy uninviting. No No never again.

We visited on Friday evening and enjoyed our meal so we returned for Sunday lunch. They have a good choice of meals on the specials board and offer a smaller portion roast dinner. There was lamb, beef or turkey this week. The service was friendly and fairly quick and the meals were hot and tasty. They even offer four choices of soups. Prices were reasonable. It is a traditional old pub which was built in 1861. It can be entered from the roadside (Main Street) or from the car park. If you enter from the car park, you find the toilets on either side of the door, then are are about 3 steps before you enter the main bar area. I did not see a disabled toilet but there may be one that is accessible from the front of the building, I am not sure. There did not appear to be any wifi and phone signals ( 3 and EE) were not available due to local geography. There is a garden area and a garden menu. We enjoyed both of our visits.

We visited the Horse and Farrier on a Sunday tea time, we booked a table and we're grateful for that as it was quite busy. The staff were lovely and as we watched other customers' food being brought out, we were delighted by what we saw, the menu is good, proper pub grub, with plenty of different options. My little girl had decided she wanted scampi after seeing a poser for it as we walked in, however it wasn't on the child's menu, but that didn't matter, the waitress was very accommodating and organised a child's size portion of scampi, any parent will agree is really useful and we were very grateful. When we got our food we were pleased, the steak was massive and cooked as ordered, the chips were lovely, my little one ate most of hers which is a rarity for when we eat out. The only downside was the wait, 45 minutes, it wasn't anyone's fault, just simple mathematics, everyone turned up at the start of evening hours and everyone ordered at the same time. However it did mean we wernt able to order puddings (which sounded amazing) as it was then bedtime for one little lady, saying that, some of us had no room left :-). So lesson learnt, turn up early and get your order in quickly.

Went with my wife and two pups. We ordered food at the bar. Lady behind bar was animated and a little odd. She tried to make conversation but found her at times to be curt and a little blunt. We opted for simple food and have to say it was not bad when we received it. Bread was simple sliced tesco bread but the sandwich was OK. I had a cheese and beans jacket which again was passable. Food will never win any awards but will fill a gap if every where else is closed. Absolutely zero atmosphere, very cold and very dark. Wouldn't go again as there are better in the village.

Our first visit here many years ago I was introduced to battered cauliflower, ever since then my wife creates dishes with different flavours of battered veggies. Thank you for that.Cosy pub with good pub food, never had anything to complain about, except the fact when we have to leave.A little more expensive than the others but you get what you pay for as they say.

My daughter was treated to a lovely birthday meal here with friends and family. I booked us in, and made arrangements with the Landlady for balloons and decorations. We asked for the big room, which we had and the food was delicious. My daughter had a wonderful time and we returned again the following week and had the same warm welcome and fab hospitality. Thank you.

We visited the Horse And Farrier whilst staying in a nearby cottage. We visited on our second night (Sunday) 30th November, which happened to be my wife's birthday. Unfortunately, i have left this review a while so i cannot fully remember what food everyone had, but I can write a general review about the quality of the food and the building itself. At first, The Horse & Farrier is rather unassuming, sitting back from the main road through High Bentham, you could easily miss it. You'd be forgiven for assuming that there's no car-park either, but all is covered here. The carpark entrance is through a narrow passage to the right of the building, and there is a entrance to the pub from the rear too. I'm not sure about the actual history of the building, but it is historic, and there are traces of this in the fabric of the building. The low, exposed beamed ceiling, the 'lumpy' nature of the walls, all clues that the building has been around for a good many years (Hundred(s)). So let's get to the welcome. I've got to be honest, you excel here for sure. We were welcomed into your premises like we were visiting someone's house. I'd have felt comfortable taking my shoes off, and putting my feet up on the couch, and that welcome extended to our little'un. Beautifully, this feeling of welcomeness also extended to your clientele who were wonderfully chatty. If you come in here, and are willing to allow yourself to feel at home, you'll move very quickly from 'Customer at a Pub' to 'Friend at a gathering at someone's house'. Which is wonderful! Going one step further, the owner's daughter(?), (teenager), was playing peekaboo with our little one, which just added to the atmosphere! As I said, i can't remember what our food was for both of the visits, but I know that the gammon here was so good that we all had it on our second visit later in the week. You can taste the quality, and you can tell that it is locally sourced, and that care has been put into the preparation. You can very easily go greasy when you put a fried egg on top of a gammon steak (and why wouldn't you do that?!?), but here it's managed perfectly, no grease, just a beautiful cut of meat. In terms of price here, we ate here twice - both times having 2 or 3 courses (some don't go in for dessert), and still came out with change from what we expected. For the quality we received, we were shocked by the bill (in a nice way). It's pleasing to see that in between our two visits The Horse & Farrier received an inspector from the Food Standards Agency, who presented them with a 5 out of 5 rating! Top marks to The Horse & Farrier, a warm, welcoming reception, with excellent food in terms of taste and presentation, in a good location, with parking facilities. I'd list this one as 'The best in town'.We'll be back for each of our visits to the local touring park this year, and look forward to seeing you again!

We used this pub years ago and it was excellent, we were passing and were absolutely famished so decided to try it. on entering it was reasonably busy and looked in need of a lick of paint. We both chose fish and chips as we felt it would be a popular dish. When it arrived it was obvious both fish and chips were frozen and the batter had a coating of floury paste on the inside. The fish was of very poor quality and I would suggest it was not Cod as in the menu. We complained to staff but it was not their fault. The one point given is for the mushy peas which were surprisingly good.

We have just returned home after a ten day stay in Bentham and can honestly say the Horse and Farrier does the best Sunday Lunch around! We visit most times we are in Bentham and I usually stick to the vegetarian lasagne but this time tried the Sunday Lunch and will definitely be back! As others have said Kate is always welcoming even though she is often busy and her attention to detail is great (always gets my daughter a pink bowl and pink cutlery for her meal!) On my latest visit I stupidly left my handbag behind but when I realised where it was I stopped panicking as I new it would be safe! Thanks, Sarah, Mark and Charlotte

We ate here as a family and also as a group when our friends joined us for our stay at Riverside, over the course of the two weeks we tried many of the dishes on offer, the food is tremendous not one of our group of 7 had any complaints in-fact it was all praise. Kate the land lady can't do enough for you and never stops but always has a smile which at the weekend when it's so busy is remarkable, keep up the good work and will hopefully see you next year. Had a meal in here on Saturday night. The staff are very welcoming and although it was very busy we were still able to find a suitable table for the four of us. We all had a starter and a main course which was served without to much of a wait. The portion sizes are very good and the food was excellent all at a very reasonable price. We have stayed in Bentham on many occasions but it is the first time that we have eaten here, we will return next time we are here. The pub does allow well behaved dogs which is good as it makes it easy when passing on one of the many walks in the area to just nip in for a coffee or a pint.

Stayed at The Lister Arms for a couple of nights mid week. We stayed in the Lister Barn which is a 2 minute walk from the actual pub. Cosy and warm, tastefully decorated with lovely toiletries - a real gem of a place. The main pub is really cosy, with a gorgeous fire burning all day and evening. Breakfast and dinner here were both really good with large portions. Lots of dogs inside the bar area too which was lovely. Staff were friendly and helpful. Would definitely return.

After driving around the Yorkshire Dale's, we were in need of a drink and snack. We came across this lovely little tearoom and we weren't disappointed, quirky and quaint I would say, very friendly, great value for money too.

Fantastic place. Roll with bacon and sausage was lovely. Really good quality ingredients and perfectly cooked. Friendly staff and great atmosphere. I've been coming here on caving trips for 25 years and always either start or finish the day in Inglesport. Love it. The only thing I'd say... bring back the pints of tea!!! And please don't ever stop doing the tiffin, it is the best on the planet.
