The Clarence in City of London, Westminster

Delicious Sunday roast at The Clarence! Their Sunday menu has three meat options (beef, 1/2 chicken and pork) as well as a vegetarian pie, served with all the trimmings, including Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, root vegetables, greens and lashings of gravy. The portions were huge and we couldn't finish them! We also split a smoked salmon paté for starter which was delicious and salty, spread on some toast. Service was really friendly and prompt, and the atmosphere is really cosy, but tables in the dining room were maybe a bit too close together for my liking. The family next to us nearly knocked our food off the table multiple times.

Judith is a master of all trades. She is the best waitress ever. She deserves a raise.

Me and my wife and son dropped in for a late lunch yesterday (April 11) We’re Londoners but now live outside London. We were welcomed straight away by the lovely lady who seemed to be running the tables. Downstairs was busy but she found us a table and had it cleaned in a few minutes. Service was great - attentive but not intrusive. Food was excellent, possibly the best fish and chips I’ve had in years. For a pub in the heart of tourist land, I expected a very average experience but we all came away delighted. Food, drink, service and atmosphere were all first rate and the great part, the bill was very reasonable. Totally recommended. The service was truly warm and welcoming. Thank you.

We went in for drinks on a very busy evening, but were blown away by how approachable and friendly the staff were. There is generally a lively atmosphere. Hope to visit again soon.

We went here for a meal after a matinee show. We had fish and chips and the seabass. Both were good, the batter on the fish and chips was perfect and my seabass was delicious. No complaints at all and the service was good.

Doesn't open at 11am as stated. However, went there the night before the water leak on the recommendation of a friend and we weren't disappointed. Fish and chips were the best we had during our holiday and the Sea Bass was exceptional.

Typical English tavern in the center, where we were on the first floor you have to go to the bar to order, take it to the table and pay, for what they charge they would have to attend to it, the place is really amazing, very nice and central. In London, these types of taverns are a must-see.

Had an awesome time at Clarence! Service was bang on, Akshay was super attentive, made sure we had everything we needed, and just generally made us feel really welcome. Maria was brilliant too, knows the menu inside out and gave some great recommendations. Ended up going for the beef roast, and honestly, it was spot on—nice and juicy, full of flavour. My sister had the roast sharer and absolutely loved it. And those crispy potatoes? Perfection. Crunchy on the outside, fluffy inside, exactly how they should be. And gotta give a shoutout to Sophie, she's an absolute legend! So bubbly and friendly, just one of those people that instantly put you in a good mood. All in all, top-notch experience. Great food, great people, and just a fantastic vibe. Definitely coming back!

Surprisingly good and hearty food. When booking, I assumed this would be typical central London pub - fancy, small portions, no atmosphere and expensive. I was wrong on all counts - it was delicious, reasonably priced, hearty portions and a great atmosphere.

Relatively unassuming, quite delightful.

Worst food I’ve ever had. They randomly put a pork sausage on my plate after i told them I don’t eat pork. The food was borderline inedible, driest chicken you can imagine, and they ran out of Yorkshire puddings and just omitted it. I’m gonna go look for a Pret or something to get some actual food.

We were there for a lunch break, and wanted to try some PUB classics like scotch egg and ale pie. Both was absolutely delicious, it appears they have a seriously good kitchen and cooks. We enjoyed our time and were delighted with a fast and good humored service. Would definitely recommend it!

A charming and authentic pub with great decor and relatively good service. We tried the green salad, shrimp cocktail, steak and ale pie, and sausages. While nothing was truly “exceptional”, everything was still enjoyable and well-prepared. Plus, they’re one of the few pubs in London that serve Hawkstone lager, which is a great bonus

Incredibly good! This is the place for pie and fish and chips, but I’m pretty sure the rest of the menu is just as delicious. The flavors are spot on, and the quality is excellent—definitely worth a visit! We always come back here !

Had a lovely experience, the welcome and staff really friendly. Food was good, had veggie pie on Sunday lunch menu, and my partner the beef pie, both clearly homemade. The beer and wine was expensive we felt but it is central London and I guess they’re overheads extortionate! Worth a visit and we’d return, so that says it all really

One of my favourites in Whitehall. Haven't eaten there often but it was good when I have. Great atmosphere and good beer.

Despite the delicious food, the service leaves something to be desired. We were warmly welcomed by a woman who finished her shift. So after our meal, the staff was slow to take away our plates and I think we would still be there if we hadn't asked for desserts. Lovely experience at The Clarence with that lovely English pub vibe! The food was delicious and we were lucky enough to try the new-on-the-menu salad with the goat cheese and sweet pumpkin - what a treat! Staff was great and super nice and thoughtful! Tom, the bartender, went out of his way (literally) to obtain the coffee needed for Irish coffees. Judith, our server, was darling and efficient. The scotch eggs were incredibly! The soup was delicious and just what we needed to warm us up on a cold day.

Absolutely amazing place. Great food: Beef and ale pie - I hope that I remember its name correctly - as it was the first time for me I have no idea what to expect, but it was brilliant. Fish & chips and kids burgers with fries are also recommended by the rest of my family. Add to this very helpful and nice People and You get a wonderful place.

ITS VERY VERY UGLY AND VERY SHOOOSH

Best peas I have ever eaten. Came with the excellent steak & Ale pie. I don't generally eat peas, but these were fresh & firm & warm. Steak & Ale pie was yummy, be hungry. Loaded with good quality beef, and the gravy is good to the last drop. Also notable, the onion rings. There were 14 in my order, so shareable. They were coated in a very light batter, thinly sliced but well cooked and still a little firm so biting broke the piece cleanly and didnt leave onion dangling.. Batter was closer to tempura than the breading or beer batters & hard frying common in USA. It didn't crumble & fall to messy pieces like many places. Service was pleasant & friendly & well timed. Note: the ladies' is upstairs. We had a 12 pm seating on a Monday. By 1230 the dining room was full.

Our Sunday Roast today was superb. Very generous portions and nicely cooked and presented. The red wine was just at the right temperature and a great accomponiment to our meal. Our waitress on the day [Ewa] is a genuine asset to your organisattion and one of the reasons we will be returning. In the Summer we hope you continue to do Ploughmans lunches. A great experience. This is a lovely pub, but through no fault of theirs we went on a Saturday when the football was on so it was a tad noisy! However, on the upside, the service was great and I don’t think I’ve ever had a better beef and ale pie, absolutely delicious!

Ah yes, who could forget The Clarence. I keep coming back there. On my most recent visit at a PSC demonstration which was surrounded by police lines, I needed to go to the loo, having had a coffee and hot chocolate nearby to get out of the cold. The landlady helpfully told me that toilets are for customers only, so I bought a blackcurrent cordial with water and ice for only £1.80. The fish and chips are around £20. Thank you for your sevice.

Great spot to stop in for an evening bite after doing the touristy stuff. My daughter and I shared the Beef & Ale Pot Pie, Onion Rings, Caprese Salad, and the Toffee Pudding. I'd say all of these dishes were our favorite. Although, I must say those onion rings are to die for! They were light and crispy and the onions weren't overpowering. Loved our bartender - he was the only one who greeted us and made us feel at home. We enjoyed our meal and sipping our cocktails during our last night before heading back to California.

Great music playing, good atmosphere and and their AMAZING cherry bakewell cocktail! What else could you ask for?

Great Whitehall pub. Been visiting for 40 years. Despite its tourist location the pub serves great drinks and tasty food. The staff team are friendly and attentive. They even give table service without having to ask. Prices are a little high but to be expected in this location.

Wow, what a meal! We walked in off the street on a Sunday evening not expecting anything special because of the proximity to such touristy things. We were very pleasantly surprised! I had the chicken roast, my daughter had the beef and ale pie. We shared the sticky toffee pudding. It was all superb! Thank you so much for ending our evening on a high note.

FURST Stopped off for a drink on the way to a show at The Trafalgar Theatre. Decent range of Youngs beers (important to a bitter drinker) Priced as to be expected in this part of town. Have now made it my unofficial West End local. Always find a seat, usually at a large table with random folks already there. ie American airlines pilot, Irish or German tourists, etc. willing to shoot the breeze. Smiley staff, good beer, foods pretty good too. What's not to like?

Wonderful pub around the corner from our hotel. I’m gluten free and my son has nut allergies. They made it easy to order and the food was delicious! Dedicated GF fryer too!

The food here is ok. Not the best but by no means the worst. Some of the fried food is a bit greasy. The biggest issue is the service. It's quite haphazard. The atmosphere is great though and a real classic old London pub. Pop in for a pint but perhaps eat elsewhere. Gents toilets are downstairs.

The Spanish waiter, Luís, is a crack

Staff terribly mean to children. Because my husband and I were standing at the bar to order something, our children were barked at by one of the waitresses, because apparently they don't like it when there are two children at a table. So definitely not recommended! Glasses of wine also very expensive, an average of 18 per glass. I ordered a beer and received some kind of non-alcoholic drink after we had already paid, because “they had nothing else left and they had looked wrong”.

The fish and chips are really big and delicious. It's big enough for one man to eat alone. Old Burger is also a recommended menu item.

Very nice place close to big Ben. Typical warm English atmosphere. The food served is plentiful and good. Thanks to Maria for her welcome and kindness. On the other hand, go there early because otherwise a reservation is necessary to find a place. Reasonable price for the location and quality

For the third year in a row we had our annual Christmas lunch at The Clarence. The menu choices were even better than 2023. As usual the service was excellent. The three course meal was slightly cheaper than in 2023 which we thought was an achievement.

Typical location, warm and welcoming. The place was full and yet there wasn't the classic crowd noise, we were able to chat peacefully. We ate fish and chips and a huge plate arrived. The frying was very light and the fish very good. The upper room is truly a gem

I was going to give it a lower review, but the food and the staff were absolutely amazing. We arrived there at 20:00 with a reservation, but there were a lot of key dishes that they were missing. While that was a disappointment at first, the dishes we got were really delicious and the staff members so friendly and nice. Overall, I would definitely recommend this place, but my advice would be to try to go early, especially for Sunday roast.

Everything was great, except that they had already run out of about half the menu offerings before our 6:30pm reservation. Someone in the procurement function needs more training.

Absolutely loved it. The Staff members Lisa and Kim was so helpful with my Allergy. They made sure that they let the kitchen know about it and Kim had pre called and spoke about what i can and can’t eat at the restaurant. Lisa brought out an allergen menu when i wanted dessert as i wasn’t sure if i could have any or not. Most places don’t bring out the allergen menu so this was a lovely touch. The atmosphere was lovely, all the staff were vibrant and very welcoming.

I booked a table for drinks and lunch with friends. Although the pub was busy our table was ready and waiting for us in the bar. The service was excellent and our waitress Lisa was so friendly and helpful. It was our 2nd visit to The Clarence and we will definitely visit when we are in London again.

Lovely setting, beautifully laid out table. Service was fantastic, food was served promptly - no waiting around. They were short staffed, which I think played into the area having to close at 9pm? Food was lovely overall, a couple of things like no stuffing with our turkey dish and the cheese crackers were quite tough, but these are just tiny little things. We highly recommend!

Amazed that Apparently Youngs The brewery policy or the Pubs is to refuse Scottish currency. Having come down that day from Scotland I ordered a wine and beer and when served offered to pay. Sorry the bar. Woman said Company policy not to accept Scottish money. So if you are Scottish visiting London your money is not accepted in the Clarence Pub on Whitehall - Weird in 2024.

Great pub, central London prices but you get value. Bathrooms are clean, decent poured Guinness and friendly staff. Cleanliness rating is a 5 on the door. Food looked good, traditional pub grub.

A truly fantastic meal in a beautiful pub.

Stopped here to have a couple of drinks after an incredible amount of walking around London. The atmosphere of this place is really unmatched! Super cozy, exactly what you would expect from a London pub. The drinks however did not match the atmosphere - when I asked for two cocktails I was met with distain from the bartender. The cocktails were also considerably unimpressive, especially for the price of them. Both watered down, no foam, not very picturesque - an espresso martini and a whiskey sour.
