Bedford and Strand is a hidden gem. You'd never realise it was there, until someone in the know takes you. It's well-located, at the foot of Covent Garden, close to the theatres in the Strand and Charing Cross station. It's lively (positively noisy at times), with interesting food: good choices between bar snacks and full meals, and a nice winelist.

When I reported this to the manager he just took the plate away no apology. The food then arrived back at the table having been microwaved, the outside of the mashed potato was very hot the middle tepid, without the vegetables that I ordered. Still no apology. My wife and I paid a visit by complete accident last night. From the outside, all you can really see is some stats going down and very little signage. Once you arrive at the bottom of the stairs, you are met with an amazing site as this is a very well laid-out restaurant with plenty of room for tables etc. I can't believe it's in the middle of London as so often the restaurants pack as many tables into each square inch that they can, but not here. The service is first class and every member of staff went out of their way to make you feel welcome. We had the fish and chips with a bottle of wine and enjoyed every aspect of the meal. The fish was excellent and s another reviewer has written elsewhere "Ive paid twice as much elsewhere and received food that was half as good"This is now going to be our go-to restaurant for Covent Garden etc.

We had to chase our food though - it arrived at 7.10 so half an hour after ordering. My vegetable cassoulet was nice but the dumpling was incredibly dry and powdery. The waitress seemed to blame us for not saying we were going to the theatre - though I had mentioned it when I booked and we thought ordering by 6.40 would be OK. The steaks were perfectly cooked but lamp chops were disappointingly overcooked and dry. ( there were two people ordering lamb and both dishes were dry) One of us ordered a white fish but it arrived undercooked, so one of my friends had to return it and wait for another 20mins which by that time we have already finished. There is also a lack of staff in the dining area so it was difficult to make an order. Met with 2 old friends I hadnt seen in years for a relaxed dinner out. This was a first for all of us. Service was relaxed, attentive and friendly. We were asked if we were going to the theatre incase they needed to speed up our order. Food was delicious, well presented and reasonably priced. Would definitely recommend.

Went with a group of friends and as ever the food was good and the atmosphere was fun. Service is average at best often leaving you thirsty and looking around to try and flag a waiter down though

Found this place by chance while out with friends for the day. It's got a fantastic wine list and is a lovely spot for a drink. We didn't try the food but it looks to have a nice selection. Great casual spot for a nice glass of wine.

A perfect little gem that you might pass up if you didn't know it was there. Read about it in a travel magazine and so glad we tried it out before seeing The Mousetrap. Excellent bar and the bartenders are true "mixologists". The menu is diverse and interesting.

Good food, great service, but difficult to conduct any sort of conversation because of ambient noise.

Having spent my entire working life in and around the City and the West End. It is always a pleasure to find something new and then discover it has been around for ten years or more. You are not really drawn into Bedford and Stand by the front entrance and for this reason I guess why this is a hidden gem. Once you have walked down a flight of stairs you enter a large room which is split into a wine bar and small restaurant. We were looking for somewhere to eat post theatre and used TripAdvisor for inspiration and this is how we found Bedford and Strand. The menu is simple, but you are taken by the fact that food is fresh, nicely prepared and well balanced. The Devon Potted Crab was top draw. The desserts were wonderful, again a limited selection but very enjoyable. Also a lovely cheese board, with a nice selection. The service was excellent and attentive without being pushy or over the top. I thought there was a good selection of wines which were reasonably priced for a London venue. After dinner we stopped for cocktail/digestive in the wine bar area, again really good and friendly staff. There seemed to be a great selection of snack and small plates available in the wine bar. The evening was topped off with a complementary Basilcello, very nice, end to a very good evening. I now have a new haunt for the Charing Cross area., we will be back soon. Worth a stop for dinner or just a relaxed drink.

average Sunday roast - we did the 4 persons, and didn't think it was good value - they only tell you afterwards it's unlimited veg.

I ordered chicken breast from the main menu. The meat was very tough. I told the waiter about this. He replied that this dish is in demand). Then I said that your cook doesn’t know how to cook it. I don't recommend this establishment.

One of the oldest Tavern in the World, dates back to 1121 apparently, located in the heart of the City. Really cosy wooden pub with ambient lighting and cheminee. Food was ok, had some small plates, 5 for 35pounds.

Beautiful cocktails but a complete boys club. Staff exclusively addressed my husband and not me. They expected him to order for us both, asked him how the drinks were, thanked him as he left. I may as well not have been in the room. I appreciate that the vibe is old fashioned but this isn't the 1800s and it's pretty astonishing to not be addressed or even glanced at once.
