Bedford and Strand is a hidden gem. You'd never realise it was there, until someone in the know takes you. It's well-located, at the foot of Covent Garden, close to the theatres in the Strand and Charing Cross station. It's lively (positively noisy at times), with interesting food: good choices between bar snacks and full meals, and a nice winelist.

For the second half of our meal we were served by two waitresses, and the service improved immeasurably. A group of 3 ladies for pre-theatre food. We waited ages for the food to arrive and when it did the portion was small and very cold. When I reported this to the manager he just took the plate away no apology. The food then arrived back at the table having been microwaved, the outside of the mashed potato was very hot the middle tepid, without the vegetables that I ordered. Still no apology. The bill arrived, i had been charged for the vegetables never received, they had the cheek to add on a service charge and tried to charge for a drink never received. Very poor.

My wife and I paid a visit by complete accident last night. From the outside, all you can really see is some stats going down and very little signage. Once you arrive at the bottom of the stairs, you are met with an amazing site as this is a very well laid-out restaurant with plenty of room for tables etc. I can't believe it's in the middle of London as so often the restaurants pack as many tables into each square inch that they can, but not here. The service is first class and every member of staff went out of their way to make you feel welcome. We had the fish and chips with a bottle of wine and enjoyed every aspect of the meal. The fish was excellent and s another reviewer has written elsewhere "Ive paid twice as much elsewhere and received food that was half as good"This is now going to be our go-to restaurant for Covent Garden etc.

We had to chase our food though - it arrived at 7.10 so half an hour after ordering. My vegetable cassoulet was nice but the dumpling was incredibly dry and powdery. The waitress seemed to blame us for not saying we were going to the theatre - though I had mentioned it when I booked and we thought ordering by 6.40 would be OK. The steaks were perfectly cooked but lamp chops were disappointingly overcooked and dry. ( there were two people ordering lamb and both dishes were dry) One of us ordered a white fish but it arrived undercooked, so one of my friends had to return it and wait for another 20mins which by that time we have already finished. There is also a lack of staff in the dining area so it was difficult to make an order. We had all been looking forward to a meal there, but three of us ordered the Fish and Chips from the board. The fish was OK, but the chips were dreadful - very dry and overcooked. When he eventually came to serve us he didn't smile or speak, and if we asked for drinks or food simply nodded to acknowledge our request. Having spent my entire working life in and around the City and the West End. It is always a pleasure to find something new and then discover it has been around for ten years or more. You are not really drawn into Bedford and Stand by the front entrance and for this reason I guess why this is a hidden gem. Once you have walked down a flight of stairs you enter a large room which is split into a wine bar and small restaurant. We were looking for somewhere to eat post theatre and used TripAdvisor for inspiration and this is how we found Bedford and Strand. The menu is simple, but you are taken by the fact that food is fresh, nicely prepared and well balanced. The Devon Potted Crab was top draw. The desserts were wonderful, again a limited selection but very enjoyable. Also a lovely cheese board, with a nice selection. The service was excellent and attentive without being pushy or over the top. I thought there was a good selection of wines which were reasonably priced for a London venue. After dinner we stopped for cocktail/digestive in the wine bar area, again really good and friendly staff. There seemed to be a great selection of snack and small plates available in the wine bar. The evening was topped off with a complementary Basilcello, very nice, end to a very good evening. I now have a new haunt for the Charing Cross area., we will be back soon. Worth a stop for dinner or just a relaxed drink.

Our first time visiting this wonderful place and being "out of towners" were pleasantly surprised by the warm welcome we received at the door by James ( nice touch) . The reception, feel, general atmosphere was great and the Sunday dinner was beautiful and well needed. We'll 100% be back on our next visit. Thank you James to you and your lovely staff 😊

One of the oldest Tavern in the World, dates back to 1121 apparently, located in the heart of the City. Really cosy wooden pub with ambient lighting and cheminee. Food was ok, had some small plates, 5 for 35pounds.

Went with about 10 friends, unfortunately they didn't have most of the food on their menu that we wanted, they tried compensating us with free salad and tea

Had an amazing expeience in one of the rooftop igloos for lunch with a friend. Lovely cozy setting with heating if needed in the igloo. Food was wonderful, spectaular views, and superb service. We were very well looked after by the 'bald italian,' as he described himself! He also gave us a guided tour after our meal, including the rooftop bar on the next level up. Will definitely be back.

Fine - bit expensive for what it is and coffee is not great but not bad
