An antique, historic gem of a London City bar. Step back a couple hundred years in the city and entering this beautifully preserved bar. Narrow alleyway location provides a city hideaway with excellent alley drinking & a large drinking hall. A large square bar room with the smallest bar of all my reviews to date; a one person pillbox bar with superb Samuel Smiths on draught. This is a classic Dickensian alcove bar with many large tables & some pew bench seating. It's a gin parlour vibe with a hideaway room in the corner. The painted ceiling & walls could be 100 years old with a superb original tiled oven & Victorian fireplace. Equally antiquarian artwork decorate the walls around decorative pillars, with a strong recollection of Dickens & he being a frequent diner. Comfortable in its style & no pretence, this drinking establishment is a very well preserved piece of London history.

Dreadful. Burnt food and bisto gravy. An historical restaurant that used to serve acceptable food, unfortunately this was not our experience. The half the sausage ring was carbonised, the vegetables were tasteless. Frey Bentos do a better steak and kidney pudding . I was shocked as to how much the restaurant has deteriorated.

Great little pub, tucked down an all too easy to miss lane. We were lucky enough to pop in for a pint on a quiet night; the publican regaled us with a constant stream of tales about the history that happened within these four walls. From Dickens to a film location for the latest Tom Cruise movie - this pub has seen it all!

So if you can find the way in this place is a little hidden gem (and right next to the wine house) this place opens as a public bar in the evening, the rest of time I think its a private hotel bar. The bar itself is the size of a phone box and sells sam smiths beers, two ales on and a keg (SS lager) but they also have most of the SS Range in bottle for sale. If you are going to stand outside pick this place over the wine house, the beer list is far more interesting!

The George & Vulture Chop House has links to Charles Dickens, and is mentioned in his famous books. It's very atmospheric, and you can almost feel Dickens's presence ! The menu is (reasonably) authentic (i.e. lamb chops, devilled kidneys, no burgers etc), and while prices have increased a bit since Charles Dickens visit (sadly !) they remain "sensible" - additionally our meal was really nice, with big portions. Friendly, helpful manager/staff. Decent draft bitter available. (On offer is "potted stilton" - this is a recognised recipe, involving a butter crust on crumbled stilton. Our cheese was just stilton in a pot, which is simply wrong . It's sad that given the rest of the menu, such a mistake is made and we feel they should either do it properly, or take it off the menu.)

Been here a number of times over the years, but the last time was pre-Covid. I am please to say, it hasn't really significantly changed and is still excellent. It's under new management but still owned by Sam Smith's. The restaurant manager was welcoming and friendly (her husband is the chef) and happy to talk about the restaurant. They intend, of course, to keep it as it is (it would be foolish to change it!!) with booths and discrete lighting etc . I had deep fried whitebait which was delicious and my wife had bruschetta which was also delicious. Only problem was the small size of the plates; her bruscetta kept spilling over the tiny plate onto the table! For mains I had steak and kidney pudding which was cooked perfectly (in some restaurants they are underheated). It came with cabbage but the mash was an extra. My wife had the fish of the day which, again was good. I finished with a savoury, Welsh rarebit. It is so good to find a restaurant still serving savouries. An observation (and not a complaint) was that it was thickly spread over a thick slice of sourdough. It was enough to serve for a tea. Unusual to comment on getting too much nowadays. My wife's crumble was perfect. With a bottle of red wine (this is a Sam Smith's house so there is no choice over the wine - it's red or white - again this is a comment not a complaint!) the bill came to £125. Yes, the halcyon days of old, when this place was packed with city types are gone. The matronly waitresses are gone too. In fact there were only two waitresses in the restaurant which did lead to delays in taking orders. If there had been more customers they would definitely have required more staff. Although historically famous for being a tavern or inn, it is really just a restaurant. But, as I say, it is very good, and we will be back.

We went for a celebration lunch and had an enjoyable two hours. The surroundings are steeped in history, the food (e.g. steak and ale pie) typical, very edible pub food, the sole red wine (the South African Cabernet Sauvignon) and white both drinkable. We enjoyed our meal and I would probably return. Our two course meal with drinks was a fair £50/head. Only after getting home did I read the reviews... which may explain why the restaurant was half empty! Service was indeed uneven (but friendly), we did eventually wean the waitress off her phone to bring the bill; food took a while to come; there were many absences from the menu. All is obviously not well. A pity as this is a real part of old London, down to the table next to us where three chaps were well into their wine when we arrived and when we left, flying the flag for the old-style city lunch. If you like old London and can tolerate its quirks, you'll enjoy the G&V.

The George and Vulture is a restaurant/pub in London. There has been an inn on the site, which is off Lombard Street in the historic City of London district, since 1142. It was said to be a meeting place of the notorious Hell-Fire Club and is now a revered City chop house. The staff are friendly and attentive & go above and beyond to make your visit memorable. The historical history is fascinating & the residents' ghosts are a wonderful factor in this establishment. Definitely will return & I highly recommend a visit.

Like stepping back in time, very old fashioned pub, not changed in centuries. We had a private dinning room for a much overdue friends get together. Note it is old fashioned and the stairs to the dinning rooms are dark and steep. But this adds to the atmosphere. Famous for Charles Dickens and the Hell Fire Club. Service was impeccable despite the stairs and all our food was very good. Sam Smith's ales including AF Brown Ale. Food was great can't fault it if you want to step back in time.

Nice and quiet. All the other pubs in the area are heaving and a pain to get served. This place always seems fairly empty. Super quiet and gorgeous inside. Lots of history. The only negative is, it's a Sam Smiths pub which means Sam Smiths vodka, Sam Smiths lager, Sam Smiths bitter, Sam Smiths lime cordial, Sam Smiths whiskey, Sam Smiths wine, you get the picture. There's a correlation between the busyness of the surrounding pubs with their array of different brands versus this rather beautiful but empty pub with it's monotonous single brand. If you like a nice Oban or a nice Guinness or a Doombar, you won't be coming here. If you don't mind Sam Smiths own brand and nothing else, then you'll be happy. Well worth a visit, just to say you've been where Charles Dickens once went and even weaved into his storytelling This ancient City pub, now a chop room, has origins in the 13th century, and was a favourite of Dickens. Mr Pickwick and Sam Weller stayed in rooms above the pub throughout much of the second half of the novel.

This used to be a firm favourite with fantastic long serving staff. However, today we had a rude and inpatient waiter. Table was for 2pm for 6 gents, pate starter was cheap supermarket stuff served on standard supermarket brown toast. Sausage and mash was ok but these days customers expect a quality product which this sadly lacked. Some of our table chose the cheese board which came with grapes frozen solid like a stone. When asking the waiter why he simply said that's how we serve them here. Such a disappointing experience which clearly demonstrated this is a used to be place that has unfortunately slipped down a very slippery slope to it's own fate.

I am currently embarking on the Sam Smiths challenge, visiting all 37 Sam Smiths pubs within the London area. As such I visited the George and Vulture. If you are expecting a typical Sam Smiths experience you don't entirely get it. The building is old Victorian and is being kept in that style. There are starched table cloths and table service. However, the menu is a standard pub menu. Interestingly, there is no draft only bottles of Sam Smith. So if you are expecting a pub, this establishment does not cater for the casual drinker. That said the staff were pleasant if a little absent at times. I had the fish and chips the portion was very, very generous and the mushy peas, the best I've had. The over riding memory though will be the price, a bottle of stout, fish and chips and a bread roll I didn't realise I was being charged for came to just shy of £28! A bit much for a quick lunch.

This is a classic English eating experience. Good, solid dishes served in generous helpings by a delightful team. The ambiance is atmospheric and Dickensian which is quite right as Charles Dickens himself was a regular here and the place is mentioned many times in Pickwick Papers. The City of London has a strong drinking culture and this restaurant can get quite convivial. The bonhomie can even reach a raucous level at times. Building well maintained by Samuel Smiths so therefore no music or game machines and genuine attention to authentic period decoration.

The George and Vulture is a wonderful establishment through the alley ways in the City of London. You cannot help but look around the restaurant with its quaintness and knowing that many historians and dealmakers once dined at this fine establishment which has been open since 1268. The food is always superb, fresh and you have a choice of wine or select craft original beers, truly and possibly one of the best places in London for its fish and chips too. On this visit I decided to try their vegitarian mushroom tortellini, which was mouth watering. I must say, I really enjoy visiting the George and Vulture, a great venue for business lunch! highly recommended.

Me encantó.

Loved the location tucked away off the main streets. Loved the look and feel of the place. It felt like a proper chop house. Had the pate and the veal. Yes, I feel guilty about it but it was a rare treat for me.

Very unwelcoming and cold we asked if they could light the fire which was sle day prepared and ready to go snd were told no because it would take hours to heat the room up with it. We were directed to a table by the draft door as the other tables were all reserved but, as the reservations weren’t for another hour or more we stated our preference for a table away from the drafty door. We decided against eating due to the cold and also the unhelpful/ disinterested service. Won’t return.

Though their 'special' cocktails are gone (and have been for a couple of years now), the bar has finally recouped some of the pizzazz it lost after covid, with a great selection of drinks and some delectable food. Though I will note that the proms happen every year in summer, just around the corner, on most nights. I'm aware of that, so it seems odd that the bar is so apparently unprepared for the influx of patrons following a performance...

This stunning restaurant not only has beautiful interiors but serves up some of the most delicious Lebanese food. We started with their creamy, smooth hummus and refreshing tabbouleh, packed with fresh parsley, tomatoes, onion and bulgur. The falafel and batata hara (spicy potato cubes) were tasty, while the halloumi had the perfect smoky flavour, paired with fresh veggies. For salads, the fattoush with its crispy Lebanese bread, sumac, and pomegranate molasses hit all the right notes. For mains, we savoured an aubergine and chickpeas casserole with rice. And for dessert we indulged in their signature knafeh (that delightful cheese with vermicelli) alongside baklava and a comforting rice pudding, all finished off with a refreshing cup of mint tea. Highly recommend this spot for any Lebanese food lover!

Excellent welcome, the servers are really welcoming, kind, smiling and patient despite the language barrier. The dishes are very good, very well cooked and very tasty. The meat is excellent, it is so tender that it melts in your mouth. And even the meat on the children's menu is of very good quality! This restaurant is worth coming to eat there, come with your eyes closed.

Our first time visiting this wonderful place and being "out of towners" were pleasantly surprised by the warm welcome we received at the door by James ( nice touch) . The reception, feel, general atmosphere was great and the Sunday dinner was beautiful and well needed. We'll 100% be back on our next visit. Thank you James to you and your lovely staff 😊
