Located within minutes of the High Street, shopping and a few restaurants this spot is a great central location for the city. I only spent 1 night in Dunfermline but felt like i had good access to anything I’d need from this location. PRO’s - Staff - everyone I chatted with were super accommodating and helpful. - Parking - there are a few dedicated parking spots under the building on the backside of where you may drive past when en route to the hotel. If those are full, there’s also a large paid lot. - Restaurant- I had the steak pie with veggies for dinner, it was pretty tasty and filling. The veggies were steamed and fresh, but a little dry, so would be nice to have a sauce of some kind included with them. - Breakfast was good with a small, essential selection of hot breakfast options, as well as toast, tea and coffee. Would have enjoyed some juice, and water but didn’t ask. Most of the places I stay which offer those items have them out and readily available for guests. - Room - I’m a solo traveler on this recent visit so I booked a single room, which had just a twin bed. The area is small but pretty well laid out and felt decently spacious. Con’s/Suggestions - The bathroom mirror is mounted pretty high, so most people (especially women) of average height would not be able to use it. The room I had (26) had a lot of available space in the bathroom, would love to see a small table or something in there for holding toiletries when getting ready in the morning. And access to a mirror for makeup and such. - Would be great to have some kind of luggage stand to put my bag on instead of it having to be on the floor. - The TV was mounted above the desk and very much off to the side from the bed, which limited viewing of the TV. In general I enjoyed my stay here and could see booking this spot again.

Just returned from what can only be classed as a mediocre meal at best. Am so disappointed in my dining experience. The City has always been my go to place for a good meal but will not be in a hurry to return. The Macaroni looked reheated and the sauce was very runny, as was the sauce with chicken pesto, the chips were not fresh and looked reheated as well. When I spoke to staff was given a half hearted apology by a lady who could not even make eye contact with me.

The City has been the families 'go to' for years. We were always guaranteed a good meal, however today we booked a table for 6 (4 adults and 2 children) and left very disappointed. On going to settle the bill we asked if it was a different chef only to be told no. If that's not the case they are scrimping on food quality which is something they have never done before. The kids meals were OK but they had no pizza. The pesto pasta, lasagne and macaroni were definitely not up to standard. They were barely warm with watery sauces and the chips were awful. None of us finished our meals. We spoke to the girl behind the bar who muttered 'sorry about that' and that was it!!!!! As I said, it was always the first place we thought of going to but we won't be back. The staff were as cold as the food when we mentioned we were disappointed. £75 is a big order to not be happy with it. Its not like it was busy and they had to rush. Future celebrations will be elsewhere. So disappointing!

After a lovely meal in the restaurant with 1st class service and tasty food we moved up to the cocktail bar, which offers table service. The service was very poor, on each occasion we had to find a member of staff to give our order to, the young girl who did serve us I think would have rather been somewhere else, her serving skills were next to zero. A smile to the customer paying her wages would have been nice! Half the time they spent on their phones standing in the reception area of the hotel, not even looking over to see if anyone required assistance, a couple who were at the bar trying to purchase a drink had to walk over to them to ask for some service. I really think it needs a more experienced bar person supervising these young bar staff, and training them on customer service. I am a regular customer in the bar but have noticed a marked difference in the table service for a while now. Come on City Hotel, take action for your customers sake or they may just drink else where

I want a refund for my booking of 28th. We arrived at the hotel, checked in, got into our room. Our room was boiling hot. We asked for a fan (which we then had 2 AND a window open). My girlfriend asked for a hairdryer (which broke after 2 mins) at the same time, I asked if there was another room we could go into. We were told "no sorry". We went for dinner and during dinner we discussed what or how we'd sleep if that room was to be abnormally hot all night. We finished dinner and went upto the room (whilst 2 fans were running) made no difference what so ever. We decided to book different accomodation (£103). We packed our stuff, went to reception to check out and nobody was to be seen. I asked so kindly for a refund as he hadn't even been there that long, couple hours if that but their reply was "there was plenty of rooms at an extra fee (not a problem on our end) but nothing of the sort was said and they refuse to refund and have no goodwill gesture for this circumstance. "MISCOMMUNICATION". Which is lies and a terrible excuse.

A nice hotel in the old quarter of beautiful Dunfermline. Receptionist was welcoming and friendly, nice clean room and comfortable bed. Not a great view over the back carpark but not a problem. The restaurant was good, same view over carpark I'm afraid, but the food was excellent and plenty of it! The hotel is on the main High Street and right near the entrance to a beautiful park, would recommend a morning or evening stroll! Our only quibble was coming into the bar after a meal one evening for a drink the bar staff were less than welcoming, obviously shutting up shop and wanting to go home and this was before 9pm....we were asked if we were staying at the hotel before we could get a drink and felt most unwelcome....such a shame as apart from this our stay was lovely. To finish on a positive note the breakfast staff (two lovely ladies) were wonderful and the Scottish Breakfast was excellent!

A group of us had a fabulous lunch at The City Hotel yesterday. We sat in The conservatory part so when there was a downpour of rain for a short period of time, the sound effects were mad!😄 The choice of meals were really good on the menu and the staff were lovely and friendly, with efficient service. Would definitely return. Relaxing décor and spotless loos. Car parking was in Glen Bridge Car Park, at the back of The City Hotel.

Just finished a fantastic 3 night stay at the hotel. Our room wasn’t huge but it was clean, modern and had everything you need with a fantastic large shower in a compact modern bathroom. Comfortable bed and very quiet - we both slept very well. Room was hot but we requested a fan which was brought up promptly. Our TV had an issue but again it was sorted promptly. An excellent breakfast every morning - freshly cooked to order and very friendly, professional staff. All the staff we encountered at the hotel over our stay were very friendly, helpful and polite. All very professional. I’d highly recommend the hotel for a stay and I look forward to a return visit.

Three of us visited the city hotel, each staying in a single room. Mine was very small (lying on the bed I could literally touch one wall with my feet and the other with my hands), and despite it being a little tired (with a marked carpet), it was clean and comfortable. Worth noting that I was on the second floor, both my friends were on the first floor and had bigger more modern rooms. Some parking is provided by the hotel, but this is limited to four or five spaces, and they won't let you book this in advance. So don't bank on being able to use this. At check in we were warned that we were not allowed to take food into our rooms and could only order from the restaurant downstairs. This felt a bit unfair given that we'd paid for a space. Breakfast was included with the room however, and that was appreciated (and very good, with decent vegetarian options). As for the staff... Those on the front desk weren't particularly warm or friendly. Those in the restaurant at breakfast I cannot fault though, they were absolutely lovely and couldn't do enough for you. Likewise the night porter was an absolutely lovely guy who went out of his way to be helpful. All in all, we had a comfortable stay, and I would totally book here again if in Dunfermline.

We were pleasantly surprised, as we booked both the hotel and the town of Dumferline by mistake. The room was very spacious, as was the bathroom and the breakfast was excellent. The hotel is 150 meters from the bus station and it takes only 40 minutes to the center of Edinburgh. A highly recommended alternative if you cannot pay the excessive prices for accommodation, it was just a holiday in Edinburgh.

Tall male, with slight facial hair, unsure of this individuals name, he spoke to us fine but the way he came across was like he was under the influence and the stench was something else. I'd to say the staff were great. My room was 27, which was good apart from the shower was really bad...going from just right to boiling hot to freezing cold without touching it, someone is going to get hurt. Now let's get on to getting to my room...no lift! 2 stories up, or 4 stories if you are coming from the carpark, which I can manage till you get to the last flight of stairs which are very steep and about 2 feet wide. God forbid there is ever a fire in this place.

My partner and I visited with our baby for food one evening. We hadn’t booked but they found us a table straight away despite being quite busy looking. The staff are quite young and didn’t offer a high chair like you’d usually be offered in a restaurant but they brought us one after asking. There’s a good looking menu, we ordered the potato skins (very good) and the chicken goujons (clearly out of a frozen packet and not worth the price at all). For mains we ordered the lasagne (little to no beef, but an entire block of cheese) and the roast beef (average). It was a last minute dash for a meal so it pays to research as we would not go back.

Like similar reviews mention. This place is a shadow of its former self. Had meals here that were indeed 4-5 stars out of 5. However today was a prime example of a place that truly lost touch with delivering excellence to its patrons. Not the hugest deal in the world but ordered a mixed grill and asked if I could swap the mushrooms for an extra egg. The woman serving was sort of matter of fact that they don’t really do that but she can ask the chef. She did so and came back to advise it would be an extra £1.50 on top of the £18 to make that swap. I advised that I wouldn’t bother (as frankly that’s ridiculous) most places do it without a fuss. You’re saving one product and using another. The meal then came which barely filled the hot plate it came on. Very small cuts of meat which had more fat than not. Very poor product for the price. The meal also didn’t come with the mushrooms. I asked for them mostly out of principle. The food wasn’t the worst in terms of taste but it was a fraction of what it’s been in the past and the service could do with a little training overhaul. Will certainly avoid this place for the future. Please consider that your customers are your biggest asset. Treat them like this and you will notice a difference. Yes not everything is a yes. It can be no. That’s fine. But you can also be flexible giving the money your customers are paying and for below par product. 1/5 unfortunately.

Revolting visit for me and another 4 friends on the run up to Christmas. Absolutely no atmosphere, zero care and interest regarding majority of the food that came to the table. Kitchen staff could not have cared less. Amongst the complaints would be staff forgetting my food when all else delivered, then a 15 minute wait until it actually came along., another 2 meals completly inedible and bone dry (who doesn't serve nachos with gaucamole, sour cream and salsa??) We tried ordering dips etc to try make food edible and yet another 10-15 minute wait, even after we chased up the kitchen. When dips finally arrived they were inedible ... how can you go wrong with a salsa? or even with the peppercorn sauce ordered?!!! Shocking kitchen and surprised to see food of this very poor standard put on our table .. surely the kitchen staff are aware of what it is they're serving?? Have they lost all sense of taste after covid?? Seriously though, you could see what was wrong beforee the food hit thee table?!! Really felt sorry for the waiting staff here who had their work cut out serving .. could not have been an easy shift for them as many others also complaining. Will not be recommending again (it was my suggestion we try here and I'm actually embarrassed!) Certainly won't be recommending this place to anyone I know!! Avoid at all costs!

You have ruined our favourites of macaroni cheese and even the lasagne. Macaroni came as a congealed lumpy mess of ridiculous amounts of stringy mozzarella all the way through the meal. Could not eat one mouthful without long stringy cheese pulling at the plate and my mouth. City Hotel WHAT HAVE YOU DONE to a perfectly good recipe, amd WHY? There was a huge lump of congealed mozzarella the size of a desert spoon right in middle of meal, and I almost choked on it. My friend had lasagne as always had before and now ruined by stringy mozzarella . Nobody came to ask if meal was okay. Eating out is expensive now and this was a hard earned treat. How dare your kitchen staff use their obvious obsession for stringy cheese to ruin two meals, we deserve better. Needless to say we won't ever be back, but you have no right to do this in the first place. Absolutely ruined our treat and nearly choked one of us. Hard earned money gone just because you had to ruin two recipes. Well done not.

Breakfast. The menu says freshly brewed coffee, it's plain instant coffee, served from a coffee filter jug to make think its the good stuff. The kitchen staff can't poach eggs. This morning I ordered 2 poached eggs, and i was served one and a half. The previous day one of the eggs arrived in 2 parts. The white was hanging onto the yolk by a thread. I have no idea how they are poaching eggs, but I am happy to give them a practical demonstration on the correct method, and by the way it does not include spinning water. I imagine they are cooking them in a frying pan with a small amount of water but would love to know exactly what they are doing. Maybe they are shallow frying them and then washing the oil off under a hot tap, which would explain why they tend to end up with detached yolks and albumens. I am intrigued to know the answer. One of the waiting staff kept rubbing their nose face and hair, surely this is basic hygiene you don't do this without cleansing your hands after and certainly out of view of the punters, at least then I wont get annoyed/paranoid about killer viruses/pandemics being transmitted. My room in the hotel is fine.

Great location and could make for a wonderful hotel if rightly managed and with the right workforce. On arrival was greeted by a lovely receptionist, smiling and happy explaining where is what. Enjoyed the dinner in the hotel’s restaurant, haggis was beautifully cooked and my waiter was chirpy, professional and full of knowledge about the food (young man but didn’t have badge on with name so wouldn’t be able to tell exactly who I was served by). Slept ok ish, room a little outdated. Unsure what the broken airwick air freshener was doing in the bathroom on top of the light above sink that didn’t work? Can confirm the room was clean and warm and they don’t have an air con but sign is there to let you know should you need, you can request a fan at the reception. There is no hairdryers or irons in the rooms which I find a little bizarre. Having mentioned it to receptionist she said that hairdryer can be requested should one want to wash and dry their hair? Keep in mind if you do want to wash your hair at this hotel so you don’t end up getting it all wet then having to come down with towel round your head requesting to use one! They must be of real value or maybe there have been spike in theft of hairdryers at this hotel but it does seem somewhat strange where this is a basic accessory in every hotel I have been to elsewhere. Breakfast experience was a bit of a let down too, breakfast can be ordered with a waitress (no smiles with service this morning sadly) then you make your own coffee at the end of the room which is fine, apart from salt and pepper there are no other condiments on the tables, nor there are any bigger spoons for porridge but these can be specially requested again like the hairdryer. Porridge was brought to me with no offers of honey or jam or maple syrup so you eat it just as it is. There was also no sugar on table or near the coffee machine or sweetener actually so made it for super healthy breakfast ha! Like I mentioned at the start of my review, lovely hotel with good location but little things would make a big difference for those international travellers or national exploring local amenities and Scotland. Would recommend management a stay in hotels of today to compare service and identify how own can be improved. While evening receptionist was pleasant and personable, her colleague in the morning just couldn’t care less about my feedback and that also says a lot how eager they are for returning customers. I would disregard that 8.3 scoring in reception on Bookings.com because there is way to go and things that can be improved before they pass 5 mark

Went here for lunch it was a Monday, waited to be seated was not busy. Nice chap seated us brought menus. So we waited and waited, other people were going and some comming and still we waited. The young man server was run off his feet with little or no help. After 25 min we gave up. On way out we said to him we were leaving he said sorry and we left. Won't go again such a shame as the food we saw looked ok.don't go if you want good service.

We go to the to the restaurant once or twice a week. Staff are very friendly and provide a good service. Never had any issues with the food and always enjoyed our meals. Its reasonably priced and the kids meals are a bargain especially the tomato soup! 5 star

We booked online via Facebook which was straightforward. The restaurant has all been renovated and looks really nice. The staff greeted us upon arrival and explained the one-way system then asked us to sanitise our hands. Each server was really helpful, friendly and chatty - nothing was too much trouble. Despite having an "energetic" two-year old who enjoyed launching his toys around the place, he charmed the socks off the servers! The food was delicious and even the kids had empty plates. Despite it being busy, the food was delivered quickly. Felt safe when we were there and they have clearly thought about keeping customers safe. Will DEFINITELY be back!

This was the 3rd time we have stayed here, maybe just unlucky on this visit Room we paid for was supposed to be executive , far from it ! Water dripping from the ceiling, we were given a bucket to catch the water Bath had no shower curtain, however this was supplied when reported to reception When paying a bit extra for an executive room you expect something a bit extra ? the only extra we found was the muck on the window frames, disgusting

We have visited the City Hotel every weekend for years and always enjoyed the food and service, however in the past few weeks we have been very disappointed, culminating in the disappointing meal last Sunday. I always eat the same meal, it arrived and it was wrong. It was taken away and replaced although the waitress did not appear very happy about it. Whilst waiting for my meal to be replaced my husband ate alone. My food arrived and I thought we could then enjoy only for my husband to find a hair in his meal. Definitely not belonging to him as he has very little hair. When we spoke to a waitress, she asked us what she should do about it!! I was put completely off by this point but the meal was replaced and my husband ate alone. Huge huge disappointment especially as we were out for my birthday. We won’t be going back after this.

Really disappointed in the food here as i have been before and enjoyed it. Haggis balls starter was good however the sharing platter and mushroom soup were not. Soup tasted like it was straight from a tin and the platter was just a beige mess of party food straight from the freezer. Cajun chicken pasta was quite bland, chicken was dry. Burger was burnt and liver was overcooked. Service wasn’t great either, waitress was all over the place.

WE had cycled to Dunfermline and looked around the town for somewhere to have something to eat just before noon. WE were not impressed with some of the places we went into and had just about given up when we passed the City Hotel. We popped in to ask if they served snacks, to be given a really warm welcome from the waitress and the young man behind the bar. WE had the best breakfast rolls ever and followed that up with a second coffee and home-made scones. WE'll come again next time we cycle to Dunfermline.

I didn't have much time for a late lunch and asked if is was possible to be served quickly. I was seated and the freshly cooked fish and chips arrived in the time it took them to be cooked. The size of the fish was the largest I had been served in Scotland and not at all expensive.

We visited today for a family lunch and were very disappointed, our table was.booked for 12.30 yet we did not receive our lunch until 1.40, two of the meals were very visibly burnt/overcooked when they did arrive. We complained and were offered replacements for both, we asked for the child meal to be replaced but the other meal was accepted as the person was very hungry and could not wait any longer for his food. I have to commend your waiter (the lad with the glasses and the beard) as he handled our complaint very well and he deducted the cost of both meals from the bill, however we would rather have had edible meals for everyone in the first instance. We are regular customers and have not had this type of experience before, the dining area was not overly busy, we have been in at busier times on many occasions and have been perfectly happy with both the food and service. Something definitely went wrong in your kitchen today and should be investigated, not sure if I will visit again any time soon.

Was in for family meal on a Sunday lunchtime. Restaurant environment was pleasant enough, but oddly there were speakers blaring out a radio station in the dining area. Food was OK - chilli burger was tasty, but could've been warmer. Son had scampi and really enjoyed it, mother had roast beef and said the same.

Nice enough old fashioned room but you can hear the karaoke every night until midnight from the nightclub downstairs. I wasn’t able to park in the half dozen or so hotel parking spaces so needed to find a place on the street each night and get up early every morning.

Visited with partner and friend for a quicky on a Friday before going to eat at another restaurant just off the High Street. Lovely staff, all very polite and helpful. Nice clean and spacious premises, although the banquette seating did remind me of The Wimpey circa 1970 but that aside, very comfortable. Its located just opposite the Glen Gates and the frontage belies the tardis of an edifice within. Nice crowd of couples, girls from the office and small groups. We had Guinness, Sauvignon Blanc and Prosecco. Have to say their Prosecco knocks what is available on the High Street in to a cocked hat. Someone with taste chose this product, not sweet, nice bubble and pleasant after taste. It did come with the obligatory raspberry...apparently in Britain, you cannot drink without the establishment trying to stuff one of your five a day into you. Guinness came from a well managed cellar and apart from the fact it comes in a small bottles "a la British Airways from the 80´s", the Sauvignon Blanc was fine too. Outdoor seating area to rear of the ground floor if you fancy and a large carpark at the back door, so no phaffing around trying to park and you can leave the car overnight, we did.

My sister and I came for lunch yesterday (29th) April. The main meal was lovely. My sister had steak pie and I had haddock Monday which was delicious, very melt in the mouth. We both ordered apple pie, one with cream and one with ice cream. It took longer for the sweet to arrive than the main. We were about to ask where it was when it was served. The only word that can describe the pie was burnt. Strangely although the pie was burnt the apple was luke warm. We mentioned this while paying for the meal and we got a luke warm 'sorry about that' as she took the payment. I wish I'd taken a photo of it now.

Costa Coffee is a great little stop to make if you are looking for a warm-up or small bite to eat! Their Maple Hazel specialty coffee really hit the spot. Super friendly service! Within walking distance to St. Andrews Cathedral.

Visited here for a relaxing spot of lunch with a pint. However, I noticed a group of people vaping at the table opposite me. They continued as staff were mopping up under their table after a few drinks got knocked over. Yet, the staff said nothing! I then asked a young man, who brought the food to my table, if vaping was permitted in the pub. He said it wasn't, so I suggested he tell this to the table of which I was pointing to. He just looked over at them and then walked away. When I had ordered my meal, I opted for the larger size madras for just an extra £1.40. It arrived rather quickly and was quite nice but it came without the chutney which is supposed to accompany the dish. This is usually a real nice Spoons but I'm disappointed with the experience on this occasion.

What a fantastic place. Friendly staff, gorgeous cafe (loving the hanging plants!) and delicious food. A total win for our family - both gluten-free and ‘normal’. Highly recommend the GF Reuben sandwich - absolutely delicious. The all day breakfasts the others had also looked amazing and the bacon was “the best and crispiest”!

Me and my family visited this weekend for birthday celebrations and had a great experience. The food was lovely and well priced matched. As for the staff they were all very friendly and polite and were great at checking on our table when appropriate, especially the young waiter named Finlay. 10/10 service, would come back again.
