Waited in queue, family in front wanted a table inside, which was full & they were told to wait until a table was available, I then went inside to order my takeaway coffee & I was told by a rude staff member I couldn’t go into queue until the family in front of me got their table, so you expect someone that wants a quick takeaway coffee to wait until someone who chooses to wait for a table to be served, absolutely ridiculous.

Costa should be ashamed of this branch. It is in desperate need of a makeover. All the woodwork is not only dirty (unsanitary in an eating environment - what is behind the public areas like!)) but all the window frames and sills were rotten, warped, damp and really unpleasant to sit next to. Food and drink as ever, but the surroundings could not have been more offputting. As I am used to in so many Costa branches these days, the disabled toilet was out of action. The general ladies toilet was appalling - the damp problems making the 'sealed' floor lift all around the skirting, which left damp, dusty and dirty plaster and woodwork exposed. The place was awful - we could not eat up and leave quick enough, and did not return at all during the rest of our break in St Andrew's. I emailed feed back direct to Costa but received no response. I am clearly not alone in being horrified at this branch - the whole chain seems to be going downhill these days! Is this the result of the takeover?

Before writing this review I thought I would scan some of the previous reviews and many mirrored my experience. The place was minging. All of the free tables were covered in dirty cups and plates. Then there were the toilets which were an utter disgrace. There was no toilet paper which seems to be a recurring theme. There was no soap. The soap dispensers were broken and the bottles that had been provided were both empty with the lids having been taken off presumably to try to get the last remaining drops out. There was a room on the way to the toilet that was disgusting and looked like a staff dumping ground. One of the coffees we got was only half filled but this was replaced. Given there are common themes of lack of cleanliness and disgusting toilets which are clearly not regularly checked and restocked you would think some action would be taken to rectify the issues but clearly it is just being ignored. I suppose it was really busy so maybe they don’t think it matters or that they need to bother

I do enjoy a Costa coffee however I visited the St Andrews branch with my partner and I was disgusted at the levels of cleanliness. The wooden dado rail was thick with dust, the floor doesn’t look like it’s been cleaned in months. The toilets are vile and I would highly recommended that you don’t visit them, no toilet roll, lino lifting from floor, doors marked with goodness knows what I can say positively that the staff were friendly and the coffee was fab but maybe sack the cleaner and find a new one. I won’t be visiting again, Costa or not!!

A group of us arrived at St Andrews expecting to visit a local coffee recommended by one of us, only to find it closed. So off to the Costa, which is usually my preferred venue. However it didn't feel right. A queue fair enough, but uncleaned tables, a messy arrangement of furniture & the staff without a smile between them. Awful atmosphere opted for drinks only, no snacks, drunk our drinks & took off. Shame.

People say of Costa that it serves 'nice enough' coffee. In truth, the coffee beans they use are 'nice enough', though nothing special. If one drinks their espresso straight it is fine. It is ok. It is, yes, 'nice enough'. Normally, however, by the time it reaches the customer the espresso can barely be tasted. Their 'flat white', for example, is a horrible thing with espresso in something like a homeopathic dilution. If you are obliged to enter a Costa (at the airport, for example) and you want something drinkable, ask the barista to put a flat white into a 'cortado glass'. This is reasonably safe.

Nice enough coffee shop but I ha e a massive issue with people hogging outside tables. I only ever visit on my motorbike when the weather is nice, it’s a nice run from my home to there. So dressed in leather and usually hot it’s preferable to sit outside the very small seating area. This is 9 times out of ten impossible as there is usually an elderly couple or a group of hipsters sitting at tables with empty cups. And I’ve witnessed them sit there for 30-40 minutes. I find that incredibly selfish and feel management should do more to move these types of people along. Other than that staff are always great but as others have said, toilets are filthy.

The staff in this branch were excellent but I'd not recommend visting for breakfast. Facebook mummies allowing children to roam unsupervised; climbing on serving counters and throwing attention-seeking tantrums. Had a long day at work during the summer so popped in to get a cappuccino, and haven't been back since. One of the baristas was incredibly rude - I asked for soy milk and no chocolate and he mocked me, calling me a cheapskate (even though it costs no extra), he proceeded to make me coffee extra bitter. As I was leaving, I overheard him and the manager laughing at me and saying I was "another pretentious student" whose parents throw money at them because I was carrying a Harris Tweed bag (which, by the way, I bought in the sales). This couldn't be further from the truth - I was in my work attire! To top it off, I was actually working two jobs for the full three months of summer, so his comments (and his manager's agreement) were extremely insulting. As long as they're both there, I will not be returning to Costa and will source my coffee from the (MUCH FRIENDLIER) Starbucks, Pret, or the lovely independent cafés in town.

Having visited costa a few times the staff are fantastic, friendly and helpful. This all changes when the manager, who I assume is the manager, is working. He is aggressive in his nature, snappy and very unhelpful. He reprimands staff in front of customers making a very uncomfortable environment. Today everyone was working very hard and it was busy. My little boy wanted to take his hot chocolate away so I waited a while for someone to come free to help and he was it. He snapped at me " you could have asked anyone for this" I explained he was the first one free he practically threw the cup at me. Having read the reviews for this particular Costa Coffee site I had no hesitation in visiting while touring. Our intention was to have our usual toast and coffee. Our visit was mid morning on a Sunday and it was reasonably busy. Our first disappointment was no bread available for toast so a pastry was chosen instead. Shortly after taking our seats two people entered and sat at the table next to ours. One was carrying a shopping bag and inside was a small dog. The bag with dog was placed on the table while the second person purchased some food and a coffee. For the next 20 minutes the dog was fed at the table while some of the food was dropping from the dogs mouth back onto the table. Another customer thought it funny to make the dog bark making the whole experience quite bizarre. A member of staff approached the table and I presumed would take some action. Sadly the only action he took was to pet the dog and chat to what must have been regular customers. Having spoken to the manager at my regular Costa back home it is clear that Costa have a strict dog policy and generally dogs are only permitted in outside areas. St Andrews had an outside area and the weather was pleasant so I am at loss to understand why this behaviour was allowed to continue and appropriate hygiene standards not maintained.

Easy to find and as such was busy (we visited sunday, late morning). Was a little dissapointed they didnt sell tea cakes like every other Costa we had been too but what we got was good. The reason i have taken to reviewing a coffee shop however was due to the unnatural level of flies in the shop (we counted 15 at one point). These seemed to circulate the air con above the serving area and they also took a shine to the wall the toilet door is adjacent to. This made the place feel dirty and i wanted to leave asap. The food and coffee was good (as always) but surely something could be done to zap the buggers!?

Visited St. Andrews for day trip and popped into Costa for morning coffee. Busy for early morning. Coffee as always was very good. Service not so - having a little bit of banter with the server while she prepared our cups but then a "regular" came in and I was totally ignored. wife visited the toilet during our visit and wished that she hadn't.

Great but try the local wee tea/coffee shops with their own home baking a Scottish character instead

If you want excellent coffee, efficient, well trained staff, great atmosphere, a good mix of clientele (older people and students mingling together), free morning newspapers, then this is the place for you. Because of the aforementioned things it's busy. I would suggest a busy cafe is a popular cafe and, hey, sometimes it gets a little messy - small price to pay for a great cortado!

Staff very attentive and friendly. The only place to go for good coffee and service. The food and cakes are always very fresh and available.

Since St. Andrews is small and lacks variety, some of us have been to this Costa too many a time only to be reminded of its problems on every occasion. Although the worn-down interior can be overlooked, the same cannot be said for the lack of coordination among the staff. Cleaning is not a priority, and neither is getting orders right, for that matter. By this point I'm practically used to getting the wrong order the first time around each time. The staff are also rude when addressing customers and could clearly use some team-building or even customer-service skills. Not a fan.

Coffee was fine, but the hygiene standards were poor. The weather was awful, that's why we sat in.... Need staff out on the floor to tidy up, even if it's busy.

Service not good enough, not enough staff to cope, 1 girl serving and another sitting up the back on her phone and laptop obviously working but this cafe definitely needs more staff to make it better.
