The Citizen Bar & Dining Rooms in Glasgow City

What a lovely bar and great staff. Only popped in for a couple of drinks before we went home and it was such a lovely experience. The staff are so pleasant and really look after customers. Always walking round to see if anyone wanted more drinks or food etc. Really nice atmosphere in the place, the food looked good so will definitely go back for lunch soon.

Celebrating my 70th Birthday with my husband. We both had a lovely time. All staff were so friendly, meal was delicious and can't wait to return with my girlfriends in April to continue my celebrations!

Myself and my partner came here for another wonderful visit. We came in we were greeted as we came up to the door. By I think the friendliest doorman in Glasgow. We got to the bar to order drinks and we were served fairly quickly to our surprise as the place was busy. We even managed to get a booth. We came here for the White Russians these are some of the best White Russians I have ever tasted in my life. I certainly have had a lot of them. We were lucky the same girl made our drinks as before. I think she is American or Canadian however she deserves a lot of praise for how good her skills are I tell you. I will definitely come back here for those White Russians alone as well as hopefully trying the food next time round

Fuimos recibidos por una encantadora bienvenida de una trabajadora y conseguimos algunos asientos, entonces un caballero muy amable vino y tuvo una charla con nosotros, y tomó nuestra orden de bebida! Nos dieron cócteles, pero tengo que decir que el personal era increíble (cócteles no estaban mal tampoco)! I originally visited on Saturday afternoon to share a bottle of wine, I’ve been before and wanted to introduce a friend to the venue. We overheard the couple next to us rave about how good the Bloody Mary was so decided to return the following day to try for ourselves and we were not disappointed. We received exceptional service both days from Danny and the FOH team. After the Bloody Mary, I asked the mixologist, Arjun, to make me a twist on a martini, it was just perfect, one of the best cocktails I’ve ever had, thank you again. I’ll definitely be back on my next visit to Glasgow!

Arrived midday to a soggy Glasgow. Too early to check in at the AC Hotel (that’s another review). Tired from the overnight flight and hungry with really no idea where to go. I’d made dinner reservations not lunch. Lesson learned! Ellie at Reception recommended The Citizen. We slogged over and were warmly greeted and ushered to a bar seat. The festive season was in full swing! Olive & bread, soup of the day and winter salad with halloumi filled our bellies! Delicious fare served by friendly staff in a cozy atmosphere. What more could we ask for upon our arrival to this wonderful city!

Came here for a hearty Chistmas meal — the place is absolutely stunning and the Festive Cocktail menu was on fire! Would recommend that the Hiver Verte becomes a main stay!

Went to the Citizen for my birthday lunch. Very nice cocktails to start- Bloody Mary a fab cocktail. Meal enjoyable - started with Olives and bread with rosemary butter. Very nice but warmed bread and pitted olives would have been nicer. Shared the Chautebriand which was cooked very well. Mushrooms and tomatoes were very nice with them. Chilli salted chips were fab as were the dan dan broccoli - lovely hit of spice. Pudding a bit disappointing- sticky toffee was very stodgy and dry unfortunately. Overall nice afternoon. Staff friendly though no checks to see we were happy with the meals or drinks during the meals. Will revisit as a nice place to have a meal and drinks.

We've been to Citizen a few times now and having made our way through the menu we can honestly say not one dish below excellent has been served. As much as I'd like to credit the chefs, bar staff and all who serve us, they deserve it, we have been served by Grace a few times and she is absolutely outstanding. We made an off the cuff comment to Grace in a November visit we were coming back for the festive meal as a family in December because it was the wife's birthday. Well, on the day, there was a birthday card from the Citizen team on the table, her dessert plate had happy birthday written on it, sparkling candle, song and all! Along with the festive menu being nice and varied and to the usual high standard such customer service guarantees future bookings. Very highly recommended.

I recently stopped here with my partner after visiting the Glasgow Christmas markets. We came for a few drinks to end the night my partner had the mango tango and loved it. I myself had a White Russian which in my opinion is one of the best I have had in years. Shout out to the American/Canadian girl that made them as they were amazing I definitely will be coming back for more because that girl sets the benchmark can’t praise her enough

Love it in here the food is absolutely divine. We came for Sunday roasts and didn’t disappoint. Staff are always very polite helpful and cheery. I love the bar too it’s a busy place that says it all in my book. I also love all the old memorabilia as I remember the Citizen newspaper well. Nice to sit in the bar area after lunch/dinner too.

Tenía muchas ganas de comer con mi marido. Somos habituales aquí y hemos recomendado a muchos familiares y amigos. En esta visita había un nuevo menú, de menos de una semana de antigüedad, del nuevo chef que quería ‘probar cosas nuevas’. Lamentablemente, la hamburguesa Citizen se ha ido con las únicas opciones de hamburguesa de venado, una hamburguesa de pollo picante. ¿Quién quita una hamburguesa de ternera básica de un menú? ¡Es un clásico! Mi marido optó por la hamburguesa de pollo karaage cuando su hamburguesa Citizen favorita de todos los tiempos faltaba. Todo lo que diré es que no planea pedirlo de nuevo en un futuro próximo. Tuve el pastel de carne Citizen que no estuvo a la altura de las visitas anteriores, ya que literalmente solo había la mitad del filete en el plato en comparación con las visitas anteriores. De postre, mi marido tomó el pudín de toffee pegajoso que dijo que era encantador y opté por el pastel de chocolate Glayva. La ración era minúscula y no probé ningún Glayva - definitivamente no vale la pena el £ 7. 45 precio. Nuestro servidor Jemma era absolutamente encantador y disfrutamos de algunas bebidas también. Cow died for nothing! Starters were great so had big expectations for the main course but when I got my main course my burger was drier than ghandis flip flops My cousin Floyd George also got the burger and he was very disappointed.

Would 100% the citizen we visited for a sit down meal the staff couldn’t have been any friendly/helpful, food was 10/10 and various food and drink options, I would say there could be a little more dessert options as we weren’t a fan of anything but overall great place to dine out

Busy Saturday night and booked for food. Staff are exceptionally nice and friendly. Saw a number of birthday celebrations and staff singing. Food ok, burger a little dryer than I like, mussels could have had more flavour and fish a little bland BUT amazing chips. Overall just an average meal. The staff make this place

Lunch on Saturday that lot of people at this tourist area. Just walk-in at 12:45pm and still have seats inside (outside is full). Good services as a fine dining restaurant. Ordered 2 pies (beef & chicken). The smell is attractive, taste is good and display is beautiful. Price is a bit high but worth. Must book in advance for dinner.

Great dining and service in this iconic building. To this point we hadn't been terribly impressed with Glasgow but this venue changed that. Impeccable service. Food ordered was cooked to perfection- sea bream and chicken. The interesting surroundings are an added bonus.

I had lunch with my family today and the food and service was excellent. The thing that blew me away was their approach to three of the partys' garlic allergy. We have eaten across central Scotland and across the world, but never have we seen an allergen book which lists garlic. Fantastic! My wife is particularly allergic and it is life threatening (which no one believes..). How fantastic that there were pages alongside the more recognised allergens. We will certainly be back. Thank you for making us feel normal and welcome.

However, there are certain aspects of its operations that warrant scrutiny. Firstly, the entry policy of The Citizen demands clarification. It remains ambiguous whether patrons need to book in advance solely for enjoying drinks, separate from dining arrangements. This lack of clarity can be a source of inconvenience for guests who prefer spontaneity or are seeking a casual drink without a formal reservation. Clear communication regarding entry requirements would enhance the overall customer experience. Additionally, the imposition of discretionary service charges raises questions about transparency and fairness. While labelled as "discretionary" on the bill, it prompts curiosity as to why such charges are levied in the first place? So, why? With the cost of purchasing drinks already inflated, why are customers being punished twice? The Citizen used to be a great place to go for a drink - and had a terrific welcoming atmosphere. What has gone wrong? With hospitality crying out for support, does it not make sense to encourage custom rather than turn it away at the whim of a doorman?

Great food, service was good, as was the espresso martini cocktail, good choice of wine too. We all had different dishes, and everyone said theirs was delicious. Would highly recommend, been several times.

Right in the centre, great atmosphere and setting, fabulous Scottish food and tasty cocktails! Got the Itison vouchers for 2-course dinner with cocktails as a Christmas present from our friends and are very happy with their choice. Haggis bonbons for a starter and the Scottish pie were delicious, and the dessert which we ordered in addition was out of this world. Will come again!

Squeezed us in on a Friday with no reservation which was lucky for us I think! Cool atmosphere friendly staff, excellent food. Very good Old Fashioneds, Haggis stack, beef pie, pork belly (wished we’d had spoons because we hated leaving delicious sauce on our plates) and our 1st sticky toffee for dessert!

This was our first visit to the Citizen after reading the great reviews. We went to celebrate my birthday and wrote this in the comment box when booking. Firstly our train was early so instead of waiting around we headed in to see if we could grab a drink at the bar. Lovely warm welcome and great bar with plenty of seating. The hostess remembered us and came to find us once our table was ready. We were taken to our table where we were met with a lovely booth and a birthday card from the team!! Such a great impression and a nice touch to make your night feel special. The food was fab with us both going out our comfort zones and we did not regret it. The venison burger and lamb shank being the highlight of the night. Service was quick but we were never felt rushed even though the restaurant was packed. Atmosphere was lively and quite loud which, in my opinion, is great for a busy Saturday night. This was our first visit but we will 100% be back.

Stopped here for our final round before catching trains etc. It was situated just off St Vincent Street and a stone throw away from George Square. Very grand staircase to climb before entering inside. As you do, it’s lively and classy, on hindsight, probably a bit too swanky for me. However, it was an impressive bit of architecture with traditional decor internally. Drinks wise, it was a good pint (not my round but around the £6.00 price per person). No issues with the staff, toilets or space - a good way to end a quality night ‘on the sauce / tiles / whatever the saying is haha!’

Used our present from friends - Itisons voucher for a 2-course meal and cocktails. Very happy. The food was so tasty: black pudding bonbons and haggis for starters and we both opted for a good Scottish pie. Oh, it was exceptional. The cocktails were very nice too to finish the meal. The atmosphere was lively on a Thursday night and the service attentive. We agreed it would be good to bring our guests visiting Scotland if they want to try tasty Scottish food in a nice central setting.

Went here on 21st Dec. Absolutely top-notch, both service and food. The beef pie is a must-have. Even organised for us to stay an extra hour.

We found the Citizen after the poor christmas so had a spare day and spent most of it in there. Great place, we had a great afternoon and our waiter Adan made sure we had drinks at all times, excellent service.

Severely disappointed by the service in the bar tonight. Been a loyal customer for a few years and never had an issue but tonight, for no apparent reason, and no offer of an explanation, was told after having 2 drinks that a 3rd would be given but no more. Needless to say, the 3rd drink was not purchased nor will any more drinks be in the future. A terrible end to.a lovely evening.

Still in shock after being asked to leave the citizen after 2 drinks with my 2 girlfriends. We entered the citizen, had 2 strawberry daiquiris and on the the third order were asked to drink up and leave. This was meant to be a lovely quiet night with us chatting together however was interrupted by one of your female staff stating that she didn’t want us to have a hangover in the morning. OMG 😱

Two friends and I visited this bar. We had two cocktails each, on ordering the third we were told that this would be our last one as the " manager" did not want us to have a hangover in the morning ". When questioned she offered no explanation as to why this decision had been made. What nonsense! We cancelled our order and left, never to return. Two drinks in Glasgow - what a joke! We went as a work Christmas day out, the food was exceptional and the service from the staff was 5 star! The tall guy (sorry didn't catch his name) who served us upstairs was amazing, so attentive and super friendly. I left my phone on charge after leaving the premises and went back to retrieve it and Emma, Beatrice, Ryan & Jade were so lovely at helping me get my phone back, all staff members were very nice and helpful which really made it a lovely place to be. The starter of Korean Fried Chicken was beautiful, the sauce was so tasty! The main I had was the steak and chips it was honestly cooked to perfection &the chips were so crispy and fresh. The desert of Crème Brulé again was top class so luxurious and full of flavour. I would 100% recommend this restaurant, was super cosy and the staff and food was outstanding.

I have been here for drinks, never really an issue. Dinner is a different matter though. The dining room is lovely, but the service and applied service charge are both annoyingly poor. Our bottle of wine was left in the cooler, we had to keep pouring it ourselves. The server had a face like thunder, no smiles or pleasantries. Then the final straw, a 10% service charge added that is "company policy". There was no service. Avoid for food.
