The Amethyst in Glasgow City

No kitchen. Friendly bartender.

Food is no longer served at The Amethyst. A cosy pub with a cheerfully noisy atmosphere. BUT they stopped serving food some time ago. We were told they don’t mind if you bring in takeaway from nearby shops.

My partner and I were looking for a place to watch the football. We phoned up beforehand to check if they’d be showing the game we wanted to watch and were told they’d be showing the game on their TV’s. Hooray we thought! Unfortunately when we turned up the bar was full of screaming children and some kids TV show was on the TV. Surely having kids in the bar when no food is being served is against licensing laws? (Had no clue which of the many drunk adults were their parents) We didn’t want to be the guys that made those poor abandoned kids day even worse by taking their show away from them whilst their parents got paralytic at the bar, so we quietly got a pint and found a stream of the game on our phones. Later on a local drinker decided to bring their XL Bully into the bar, the poor dog proceeded to get extremely over excited by all the people around them and ended up jumping all over one of the kids (who couldn’t have been older than 4 years old) obviously the kid was pushed straight to the floor and there was a scramble to attempt to get the dog off this kid. Luckily the kid seemed unharmed but that could have gone so wrong so quickly. Anyway. Bottom line, if you say you’re going to show something on your TV, show it, yeah? You guys also need to be doing a much better job of upholding some of your licensing laws. Specifically the lines about protecting children. You guys are SO LUCKY that didn’t go worse.

Stayed at travelodge opposite and found this gem lovely pint of Tennant's spotlessly clean friendly staff and not overpriced visited march this year and returning Dec 16 th for a 3 day break looking forward to using this bar again

Recently moved to the local area and decided to pop down about 10pm on a Tuesday with a friend. Was really pleasantly surprised to see around 20 people in a local pub on a Tuesday night with quite a good atmosphere. My friend and I were impressed by good value pints but disappointed that the barmaid called last orders at 10.30pm despite their website showing a closing time of 12am. Undeterred we tried to enjoy our pints but the barmaid started quite quickly to close up, clearing tables is understandable but we found turning lights off and loudly pulling down shutters to be quite uncomfortable. Upon leaving, I tried to ask for clarification for future reference, and was advised that the bar closed at 11pm, despite the information online. A regular did explain that the closing time depends on how many people are in the bar but if 20 patrons aren’t enough for a Tuesday in a residential area I can’t see it ever being open to 12. A nice atmosphere but I’m not sure how comfortable we will be going back.

One of the few places I'd go for a drink locally in govan. It's a really nice vibe.

Stayed at Travelodge opposite used this bar for the weekend absolutely brilliant best pint of Tennant s I've had staff very friendly and helpful and the place was spotless highly recommend and will be returning soon

Visited on Saturday very friendly pub!

Hosted a surprise get together for my husbands 60th birthday last night and was very impressed. Anna and staff were very accomodating letting us set up earlier in the day, providing an amazing buffet, music and service with a smile. Everyone had a great time. The Amethyst is definately one of Glasgows hidden gems! 😀xx

This was the nearest pub to our airb'n'b and we popped in just for a drink. And because it was so pleasant we popped in on our second night as well! The staff were absolutely superb, and we bumped into one of them the next day in a cafe - she recognised us and chatted away. This sets a lovely standard, and if we are in the area again, we will be back.

Love the Amethyst, great food, drink and fab entertainment. Staff are lovely and friendly and the punters are great!

I have had no good experiences with this pub it constantly plays music louder than it should or we have comedians screeming down a mic I am two floors up and can hear their poor attempts at entertainment over my TV in the past I have tried to be calm and call down to ask them to turn the bass down and I have informed the old staff of my mental health and how the music is affecting it and just had one of their staff try to make fun of of my issues which is rather disgusting this is the second time I have had to leave a review because they had it deleted because they don't want people to know they don't care about their neighbour's absolute joke of a place the new staff are trying and my hats off to them for that but their acts clearly have no respect for them if they can't keep the volume at a respectable level

Lovely bar and friendly staff, but to be charged £17 for a bottle of wine out of Lidl (which is under a fiver) is just a total cheek. Won't be back.

Uncooked pasta, no chicken in the pasta it came out in drips and drabs ..1st person well and truly finished by the time garlic bread came out then 10min before 2nd dish with another wait, then again for 4th and fifth! It was so like sit com we waited to see what happened ..Basil Fawlty to come out? Unfortunately noone bothered, no acknowledgement and charged in full ..perhaps this is the norm. Its close to travelodge but also 77 bus stop. Get £9 bus ticket for 4 people to Glasgow Centre for get great food and service at the same price.

Popped in here while staying at the travelodge. Had food and all I can say is I highly recommend this place. Very nice food,bar staff very pleasant and even a singer on playing music, and this was on a Monday night . Very Good

The fried pickles were Delicious. The atmosphere was very relaxing for a Monday afternoon. It was clean and inviting and the music was choice.

Lovely place, quality food and drinks, best pizza ever! And only 5 quid on a sunday, can't go wrong.

We have been staying in the Travelodge while a family member has been in the QEUH. Anna and her team have continued to provide us with outstanding service, and no matter how busy they are will always stop for a chat and genuine conversation. Food is great, pizzas are especially really tasty with salt and chilli fries. Brill cocktail selection, and draught beer quality is top notch. The place is always spotless, and has great links to local history and decorated to a great standard. Our nephew still asks about Simon the cat. Thank you Anna and staff for making us so welcome during a difficult time, we will definitely be back and visit when we are back in Scotland (and bring the dog with us too!), its rare you find a great community pub like this which provide this level of service and quality at a great price!

Staying at the nearby Travelodge, their kitchen was out of service we went to look for somewhere to eat, the Amethyst looked ok so we went in, it was a little noisy as there was a jamb session going on at the time (18:00) staff were welcoming, ordered a Govan'er burger & a pizza, both were oversized we also ordered Garlic mushrooms as a starter, that was a mistake due to the portion sizes, the Mushrooms on Brucheta were tasty as was the burger & pizza, overall the food was good even though the menu was a little limited, staff were attentive making sure that everything was ok with the food, if you in the Travelodge well worth a visit but make sure you bring a hearty appetite with you

The amethyst is exactly what govan needs. Nice enough to go out for lunch or dinner, casual enough for locals to drop in with a pint. Friendly service, nice food and good prices.

What a bar , fantastic food , great service and staff. Honestly this gem ( like what I done there?) wouldn't be out of place in the west end of Glasgow . If I could give it 6 stars I would.

Popped in last week for a lunch with my son and wee dog, we had the most amazing pizza, served by 2 lovely happy lassies who also took care of my dog by giving her a wee pat and bowl of water. Awesome place with really nice decor and link to local history. Thank you, would highly recommend and return.

My husband & I were staying at the Travelodge in Govan. I'd read a couple of reviews about this bar and so we thought we'd try a quick drink on the Sunday. About 3 hours later after a few pints of Tennants a very good G & T and a fine single malt we declared we'd be back. We called in on the Monday and had fabulous cheeseburgers, the best I've had in a long time. On both occasions the service was excellent! The staff were friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Thanks for looking after us so well.

Not been.in the Amethyst since 2019 ..... staff as usual are attentive and friendly .... was only there for drinks with my partner .... we have missed our local ...and the live Music over the last year x

Cracking bar/diner in the heart of darkest Govan. Bright and modern with a nod to the ship building history of the area the Amethyst brings some thing new and fresh to a very tired area of Glasgow. With Kirsten's killer cocktails and Menabrea on draft it's a little part of the west end on the south side of the Clyde tunnel. Hard working staff, very clean and dog friendly well worth going out of your way for.

Nice looking bar with excellent bar staff. Cocktails were very good- prepared by Kirsten. We didn't catch male bar tender's name but he was outstanding. Will definitely be back , thanks to the staff 😀

A superb facility, with comfortable, warm and welcoming surroundings. Provides an excellent and varied selection of food including a great breakfast option. Great venue for getting together with friends and family. Superb Kareoke and live music reviews. Caters for kids and even dog friendly Definitely a 5 Star experience.

My wife and I were staying at the nearby Travelodge and after a long day's driving this pub was just what we needed. From the outside it looks uninviting and the smokers in the doorway should have been moved on by the staff BUT service was friendly and speedy. We both had pizza which were excellent - tasty and well cooked. House wine was excellent value. As was the Talisker Malt. Don't judge a book by its cover! Covid friendly.

Visited the Amethyst as it's near The Royal hospital for children where my grandchild was being treated. Went there on several occasions and found the staff to be very friendly. Had a meal on several occasions and prices very reasonable. The lady who worked there during the week was particularly caring and friendly asking for news on our granddaughter.

This pub gives people the opportunity to show off their talents wether is playing guitar, singing, sax or even the harp. Check with pub for details, the food is lovely, great pint and I've always have a great time here, staff friendly and outgoing child anfmd dog friendly. This is a community pub brings people together and supports youth development so the can reach their goals as singers or musicians etc..... well done guys and thank you.

Attended a staff Christmas dinner here a few weeks ago. The Veggie soup starter contained ham (which obviously couldn't be served to the Vegetarians & vegans), after about an hour the rest of our group where served their starters of chips and humus & bread (the vegan option). The main was just frozen veg, aunt Bessie roasties and bland meat which we presume was turkey, somehow it took them over an hour to microwave our main. After being in the restaurant for about 3 and half hours, most guests had given up and left.... finally we where served dessert. Dessert was advertised as: whippy icecream, winter berries and crushed meringue. We where each served a scoop of Cornish Icecream, covered in so much squirty cream the bowl was overflowing, some crushed meringue and a single sliced strawberry.

Popped in for a drink whilst staying at the Travelodge across the road. Very friendly pub, good value. I would definitely recommend it. Dog friendly. Didn't eat here as we arrived too late, but the reviews are positive and the toilets were nice and clean.

Visited here as a friend has just moved in nearby. Staff are super friendly and the pub is super chill. Definitely would recommend to visitors and locals. A great place for a chilled catch up with friends.
