The Churchillian Cosham in Portsmouth

Majority of staff seemed like they didn't want to be there, made me feel like we'd inconvenienced them by just coming in. Terrible atmosphere right from the start all because of some stuck-up staff. Such a shame because the view is amazing. But i'd rather have a decent pint in a shed if it has better staff than this place.

Good food, good location, friendly staff, Happy customer, will go back 👍🏻

A Friday get together for a group of 9, coffee was not up to standard.

Dreadful Lunch at Churchillian pub. We sat outside and decided on what to have. They did not have the lasagne, then.i requested butternut squash ravioli which they didnt have either. I settled on fish and chips. . When it arrived, because things went slowly, I had oven chips and a piece of fish that looked like it was the last bit out of the bottom of a freezer that was fried to death.. The Churchillian is a nice place in a superb location, they.must make.money easily but customers deserve a bit better . Thr serrving staff were pleasant though..

Got lunch today, didn't have the fish platter that we wanted. Didn't have the flatbreads or the rendang bites. Had fish and chips instead. Chips and peas were fine, fish was well overcooked. Calamari was awful, chewy and so so overcooked. Not asked once how the food was. Won't be coming back for food which is a shame as the view is incredible.

Check your receipts! had table of 8 booked so plenty of food to be ordered! even though each time I said it's frm the set menu a meal was put through as full price! obviously it's too late for me but hopefully this will reach someone to check their receipts before leaving the bar! we was then given other table food which was correct for my daughter but then when we got our tables food they got my daughters meal wrong and blamed it on how I ordered it.. I don't think so.. when reading it back the person behind the bar said it coreclty... mains were being served with starters piles of plates from starters still on the table.. I thought the Micks Burger Van attracted all the "boy racers" when leaving cars were speeding up that road... through the car park... but guessing this will have nothing to do with the pub. and tip first at the bar before receiving the service.. I tipped as I expected the churchillian reputation would serve us well... meh maybe not. food was nice though... if I got to choose my tip would go to the kitchen. doubt I'll be back.

Lots of items missing from the menu. Ordered the sharing nachos to start - these arrived with the mains! And after waiting 45 minutes! Nachos looked unappealing and were soggy where all the extras had just been dumped on top. Mains arrived at the same time which was ridiculous as the nachos were ordered as a starter … Mains: chicken ceaser salad - croutons were like rubber, the bread couldn’t have been a staler. The chicken was thigh meat rather than breast but was average. Beef shin was actually quite nice to be fair Burger was again average, nothing to shout home about We were not the only table that had issues on our visit. There were at least another 3 tables with the same issues and long wait times! When we brought our issues to the attention of the manager it was shrugged off that they were busy and he just wasn’t bothered at all. Awful service and would not recommend or return! It’s such a shame as the pub is in a lovely location but the staff and food quality massively let it down!!!

Had the vegan avocado ciabatta Awful ! Bread was nice and just as well as that was the main part of the meal. Needed a microscope to find the avocado as it appeared to be spread thinly on a small part or the sandwich … the filling was mainly lettuce .. the chips were nice.. overall a major disappointment! Would not recommend if you want decent food. View is lovely.

I will never eat here again. Booked a table for my dad's birthday and paid £20 in advance. Wish I had chosen a different place for dinner. Waited 45 mins for food. I don't need to add any words the pictures speak for themselves! It was undoubtedly the worst roast dinner I have ever been served.

Excellent pub … always worth a visit

A pub with an excellent view of Portsmouth and the IoW. Pub was almost full at 7pm, The wait for food was too long at almost an hour, not very hot and one, gammon had meat that was fatty and part-inedible. A very disappointing experience.

Great staff, really friendly and professional. Clean and tidy pub with personality. Lovely views over Portsmouth and beyond.

We stopped in on our way back from a long journey for a quick refreshment, none alcoholic and were asked for ID even though we were both above 18 an 25 respectively. There were no age restrictions or events happening. The lady at the bar refused to serve us and was extremely rude and walked off leaving us dumbfounded. A manager appeared and when we explained he served us and proceeded to make excuses for her. He didn't even apologise. Absolutely shocking service. I won't be returning.

Came here yesterday, was advised a 30 min wait for food , waited 45 mins for starters which was bread/olive oil and some loaded chips, then was a further wait for main. I could see 8 tables waiting on food with empty tables so was not just us. Member of staff explained that there was a function upstairs , did not feel this was relevant to the kitchen, as it was buffet service and not effecting kitchen. Main eventually came for my partner to find a hair in it. Staff refunded meal and a couple of drinks but certainly would not return. Would appear the kitchen can not handle busy periods well.

Great location and beer selection, however the food is nothing to be desired. Will be back for drinks but not convinced on the food which is a shame.

It’s rare that I give a bad review but I do think it’s a help to others to see what people think. A wonderful location (so I gave the Atmosphere a few more stars), and the staff were warm and friendly but the food was definitely lacking in quality. I had a steak but the quality of the meat made it near inedible. … it was my MIL’s 92nd birthday outing so we wanted it to be a pleasant and appealing outing and didn’t want to upset the meal with complaints at the time. There was a long wait for our main courses and a definite feeling they had been left under the warming area too long with dried up (and inedible) broccoli, and dried up fish. One of our members had the dessert (crumble) and it was burnt on top and seemed as though it was missing some ingredients. It may be that they were having a bad day but we will not be going again.

An amazing location, but what the hell is going on with service and food. Like headless chickens running about searving undercooked microwave shite an hour late. It's seriously that bad. Consider this a warning

Went last night for a birthday meal. Booked in advance. When ordering was advised there would be a 45 minute wait for food. Left it an hour and still no food (at which point the pub was almost empty), went to ask to be told they were just plating up. 15 minutes later food still hadn't arrived. When it did arrive my chips were not cooked through, the chicken had a very funny texture and the lasagne was really sloppy. Would have complained on the night but I didn't pay and didn't want to make a fuss. This was our first time coming after many years but won't be back again.

Great place to eat. My steak was as just perfect. Takes a while to get the food when they're busy. But it's worth the wait

Ordered the Hunters Chicken, service very slow, and Chicken under cooked. Not enough staff to cope with a dinner service. The wait between the main and desert was completely unexceptable. Don't think we will be back any time soon

Visited on Tuesday for lunch, selected mains from set menu and ordered at bar, as undecided about deserts bar staff advised using slate to preserve discount and order deserts after meal. After 35 min wait asked when meals would come told would come soon, after 5 mins incorrect meals bought to table (another tables order), after another wait the adjacent table (sat down 20 mins after us) got their meal. I again asked about our meal, a little later we were informed that the order had not been passed to the kitchen due to a glitch in the ordering system but would be prepared for us at no cost. My wife and I are in our 70s and suffer disabilities, the wait had been to long already so we cancelled and left very disappointed and hungry.

What can I say, booked a table for 2 for 12.15 waited a while to be seated as there was only two staff serving. Ordered our food: STARTERS 1 x Pork Crackling as described on the menu 1 x Bread with Olive Oil and Balsamic The Pork Crackling was just a bag of Pork Scratchings in a dish The Bread and Olive Oil and Balsamic was 4 small slices of French stick with a pot of oil and balsamic MAIN 1 x Sea Bass with Hassleback potatoes 1. Gammon Steak with Chips - no eggs available as they had run out but said they would put an extra mushroom on. Waited about 30 minutes when we asked how much longer and a member of staff said he would go and check - never saw him again. People that had come in after us were being served with their food by this time we had had enough so approached the bar to see how much longer and lo and behold our food arrived but not the food 1 person had ordered, instead of Sea Bass it was fish and chips and the Gammon Steak presentation was not good. The young lady said she would get the Sea Bass but didn’t know how long it would take, by that time we were not prepared to wait any longer so asked for a refund, which was not a problem. The pub was packed and to have only 2-3 members of staff on duty is ridiculous. Unfortunately we will not return.

Waited for 40 mins for food, when it came it was cold, the chicken in the Caesar salad was grey and sweaty and tasted funky , chips cold , soup cold and had a skin formed on top , and the steak and onion ciabatta had the most measly few scraps of steak , very very over crowded and busy the staff were overwhelmed by people they need more staff! I did get a refund and felt very sorry for the staff !

Waiting about 20 minutes to be severed. Pub was half empty so couldn’t understand the wait. After being severed. Our food was okay. The chips come out a little cold. Such a shame after good first visit afew weeks ago

Refused to serve me and my partner a large coke and a bacon sandwich as we didn’t have ID on us. Last time I checked you didn’t need ID for a soft drink and a sandwich. Definitely won’t be going back again. Last time we went I ordered a hot chocolate and was served basically hot water and milk. Definitely would avoid for anything other than a cold drink, but beware, take your ID even if it’s not alcoholic!

Went with wife and 11 year old at 8.30pm on a Tuesday to meet a friend for a catch up. That was cut short as barman said child had to be out by 9. So my wife had to take him home. Won't be rushing back.

Went for my husband birthday. There was 6 of us. Stood for 5 minutes before anyone came to ask us for our name, the table was pointed out to us, after sitting for about 10 minutes we discovered that we had to order on the App, at this point we found out we couldn’t order the shared roast, daughter went to the bar to ask why? Got told they didn’t have enough meat for it, BUT they had enough to do 4 Trio meats🤷‍♀️if we had done this we would have had to order the extra sides that we wanted at extra cost to us these came as part of the shared meal. We had sat at the table for over half an hour without any staff asking if we were ok and needed help. We ended up walking out with out ordering. So guessing the only thing they are short of is customer service, I would not recommend this place to anyone.

Haven’t been in here for a long time then went in last week and actually really enjoyed it food was much better than it used to be and didn’t have to wait to long

Sadly the worst dry Fish Ive ever had there, also the chips were soggy and tasted of cooked oil that needed a clean. The fish had a lot more batter than fish , the best thing of the meal were the bar staff & the 🫛. it appears quality is slipping .

Fabulous views , but characterless venue !

DONT BOOK THE FUNCTION ROOM. Sadly, the occasion was a Wake. This was held upstairs, and 2 elderly friends were unable to even find the energy to ask if there were a Lift for them to travel upstairs. That, I must admit, set me against the venue. It was very chilly. The chairs were so flimsy, I'm amazed nobody fell through them. But before I found one that was safe, I went to the coffee area. I wish I had taken a photo of the 2 spoons, a damp jar of unspecified coffee and some Tea bags, and a chrome bin with a felt tip statement to place rubbish here sat on the table. The food was absolutely awful. The worst. Dried bits of bread with unidentifiable and ungenerous fillings, a DISGUSTING cocktail sausage, cold chips. Just inedible. As I drank my coffee, someone swooped to the table and removed the saucer. The building itself looks shoddy, and I would be embarrassed to work there, let alone invite a friend to lunch. Simply terrible. I hope somebody can rescue this pub from its inevitable fate. With the astounding location, what a brilliant place to be, until you get inside.

Quite noisy. But that may be because a party was going on. One very loud woman in the group. Food ok. Just warm. Not much meat on the lamb shank.

Thought we would try here for a Sunday roast for my mum's birthday. Food was amazing, service amazing and a chilled atmosphere. Can't rate it enough.

Lovely pub serving delicious food with a great selection of beers and friendly staff. Steve was particularly helpful and poured a delightful pint of London Pride. The beer lines are clearly well looked after here. I will be back.

A great venue on top of Portsdown Hill with views of Portsmouth. Plenty of free parking behind and to the left. A decent upstairs room to hire with own bar and balcony. The food supplied for a function I went to was tasty and appetising so can imagine their meals are as good.

Sunday lunch for fifteen, they pulled that off with ease on an already busy lunchtime. Great food, great service.

Stodgy, almost solid, mash potato with sausages, and gloopy gravy. Freshly cleaned table was sticky and the noise level made it difficult to hold a conversation. They need some noise dampening features.

when here yesterday with my family the food was horrendous i had hunters chicken cause there was nothing left on the menu hardly but to my shock the chicken looked boiled and it had a burnt streak of bacon on it with hardly any bq sauce on it the chips with cold and never will i waste my money on this place again the table next to us complained and they got there money back i waited for a manager witch didn’t come out disappointed i will never go here again

One word, Shambolic, if you want to see how not to run a pub go here. When booking a table for Sunday lunch was told no dogs when we were seated there was dogs 🙄 told there was a hour wait for food even though not ideal we waited. Over a hour later we asked how much longer was told another 50 minutes yep 50 Minutes!! We got a refund I've never seen a pub so disorganised and I've never had to get a refund before crazy !! Won't be going back

Went on Sunday 6 of us ordered the roast dinners add said was unlimited potatoes veg gravy and Yorkshire asked for more gravy straight away as was only tiny bit on dinner carried on eating after asking twice more for it also then asked for more potatoes and bits had near enough finished our dinners when the waitress but jug of gravy in front of a 2 yr old and was then told run out of potatoes and bits so was offered a pudding which was told was salted caramel apple crumble waited 35 mins for if to come out and be rhubarb and ginger 🤢 so over all not good time

Really nice pub. Location perfect, for views and walks, and the staff are great. Very Helpful, if you're passing by it. Pop in it.

I booked the upstairs function room for a surprise party for my wife's birthday. The room comfortably held 40-50 guests, with room for the buffet, a DJ and the dance floor. Dedicated bar staff were on hand for the entirety of the event, with Lauren as our main server. Lauren deserves special mention, as she absolutely went above and beyond in looking after us, including helping my daughters with some of the setting up (they went a bit crazy on the balloons, so it took longer than they anticipated). Thank you Lauren! Setting up was a bit more stressful than perhaps it needed to be as between me signing the contract and being told that there was no prior booking that day so we could get in from 1530 for a 1830 start, and the actual day of the event, a prior booking was made and it was until 1700. Not complaining about that, but the Manager (Duty Manager?) got a bit shirty with my daughters (strangely not to me 🤔) and stated that we were told 1700... which is weird, as I'd never seen that individual before, and I was told 1530 to my face. I completely understand that another booking had come in, so merely point out that the management team, when "managing" the booking, perhaps could have communicated with the customer more clearly. To fair, after being asked if there was somewhere else that could be used for blowing up the balloons, a back room was offered. I paid for the Deluxe Buffet, and I liked it, though it didn't really cover some of the fussier eaters, and that's something I never thought about beforehand, to be honest. My youngest daughter was a bit miffed about the lack of the advertised "Mini King Prawn Cocktail". I also had to ask a few times, from the first enquiry in person, for the buffet options, then received them 3 days before the last opportunity to order, then an email the following day with a reminder... I work in an environment where I don't have access to personal electronic devices for the majority of the working day, and didn't actually look at any of my emails until just after the deadline had passed, but Heidi reopened the booking form when I pointed out my dilemma... very helpful. Overall, would I recommend The Churchillian as a venue for a party? Yes. Would I recommend without the ability for almost constant 2-way communications? No, absolutely not.

No complaints, the food was good, hot, and served quickly, thank you Kieran and Summer! They catered for our dietary needs, with ease, and the views were lovely.

Had the wake for partner’s mum, Joan Johnson, at lunchtime on 14th February. We booked the Sandwich menu from the Buffet Menu. Although it said “Sandwich” , we were amazed by what came out, all were filled baguettes, and plenty of chips and sausage rolls.All that attended commented on how good the food was. The staff were so helpful and polite, nothing was too much trouble for them. Would thoroughly recommend The Churchillian for its food, ambience and friendly staff.

Overall the meals that came out for others looked very good and were of good size. However, I had the ravioli which was underfilled and only 4x pieces of pasta served. I was left hungry afterwards.

Orderd 5 meals, 2 roast dinners were disgusting, meat was dried out and both had hairs in. This was probably because the waitress was playing with customers dogs in between serving. Nothing against dogs as we had ours under the table but do not think it is hygienic for waiting staff to be handling dogs and food. Roast potatoes looked frozen and of poor quality, and the cauliflower cheese looked like dried out babyfood. Pasta parcels were mostly empty and stuck together. I see this as a blessing now considering the quality of the food and the sauce resembled a non branded over sweet tomato soup. Pigs in blankets were burnt and served in a child's beaker. 2 kids meals were ok. 2 plates of food were left untouched and we left rapidly. Hoping not to feel ill over night. Avoid at all cost. Used to be a lovely place 15 years ago but went down hill a bit, thought we would try again and can honestly say the worsed meal we have had out and would never return.

Very nice food, I had the sausages and mash and they are nice butcher sausages and you get a dessert for 50p more using the set menu no service just a QR code would have liked someone to come over and ask how everything is No toilet paper in toilets even though they had only just opened at noon Dessert took a long time to come after main which made us rush to eat it as table was needed back at 2pm

My eldest son's birthday get together and it was a great night, staff were brilliant can't praise them enough.

Lovely place and setting, staff very helpful and friendly. It was very busy and the staff looked overrun and our food took an hour to arrive. We were kindly offered a free round of drinks by a very helpful staff member. I had the Caesar salad which regrettably was below par, they must have run out of chicken as it had thin scraps of shredded chicken that they must have taken the last bits from a chicken carcass. It was over run with anchovies (probably to make up for the lack of chicken). At £13 I expected better. This is a nice place to have a drink but this is not the first time that we have been underwhelmed by the food, especially at the high cost. Maybe they could learn a lesson or two from Wetherspoons. Such a shame, I wish they would get the food right as this a great venue.

The food was absolutely incredible. Hands down one of the best roast dinners I have ever had. We came on a busy Sunday but that didn’t affect the quality of the food. I had the Trio of meats and it did not disappoint. Great portion size and great quality. Unlimited yorkies, roast potatoes and gravy is a huge bonus as well. Service was fantastic. Kieran the manager is really slick. They keep spectacles on the bar in case you forgot yours and the rest of the service is really impressive. Lovely pub.

Have been here 3 times in as many months, the food is always excellent and great value for money. The staff are friendly and polite, and the customer service is very good.. the views are amazing. Thoroughly recommend this pub.

A nice pub with good atmosphere but portions are small and we had a long wait. That said, the food was tasty and it all came at the same time. Staff are friendly.

We used the upstairs private hire function room for a Celebration of Life event for our father. The room has fabulous daytime views out over Portsmouth and its harbour, Hayling Island and in the distance the Isle of Wight. The facilities were excellent with a bar for hot, cold and alcoholic drinks, several round tables with high backed dining chairs, large side table for food , toilets and an overhead projector with silver screen for whatever you might want to show. Our buffet was excellent and generously portioned. Overall I would be very happy to recommend 👍

Came up the churchillian today for a steak and it was amazing couldn’t have asked for better service. I last came up here a year and a half ago and it was awful . Kieran the manager has really done a good job with turning this pub around and making it a must go location.

Food excellent when it arrived. Delay due to ordering delay by staff. The waitress was very helpful and although could not help us directly, she approached a staff member who could. He seemed put out that he was pulled away from a customer he was simply talking to for a long time. Its a shame because our previous experience here had been excellent on service.

Have eaten here multiple times and had really good experiences. However tonight was a different experience we booked in and arrived for 1900, ordered drinks and starters whist deciding on our mains. Unfortunately (although sill available to order) my starter was unavailable and was replaced with another item. We then placed an order for mains only to be told that the kitchen had closed just after 1930. There was no point in the booking process or on arrival where we were informed about the kitchen closing before 2100 as stated online. After announcing our views on the situation they were then able to make our mains. To conclude, although the floor staff did try to rectify all issues at hand as quickly as possible and politely, it was rather disappointing to be told the kitchen was closed just half an hour after our booking started. I hope that this was a fluke and our next visit will run more smoothly.

Just a lovely, no-non sense place with a good selection of quality dishes. Clean, friendly and a surprising amount of parking space.

Great views over Portsmouth. Good selection of well-kept local beers. Sunday lunch is recommended, but all the food here is tasty Pub grub. Good access to local walks around the forts found in the area. It's worth a visit, you won't be disappointed!

Tried the new Christmas menu food was excellent as was the service from Jay & April highly recommended.

Had a wonderful meal from the Festive Menu, Venison & Steak pie & the Belly Pork along with the Chessecake and Salted Caramel sponge. Great service, totally recommend & will go back.

I was very disappointed in the service and won't be returning to that restaurant, the reason is that they didn't have what we ordered, the service was appauling, the waiting is far too long, but I will say they did give us a discount.

Booked a table for 6 at 3pm Sunday the 10th. We arrived on time. Was shown to table which was perfect. Slightly animated younger group beside us, but not in any way an issue. Waiter came over after several minutes and took drinks orders, but we wouldn't let him go...as we'd all decided on a roast. This far. Everything perfect. 40 minutes later, my wife had enquired about an approximate time for service, as we had 2 young children under 8..and they were naturally hungry. 5 mins we was told. And slightly more than 5 mins out food had arrived. Perfect. The waiter asked us if we needed extra potatoes... Yorkshire puddings or carrots etc. Yes Yes Yes please. By the time our meal was more or less finished, the additions arrived. However. The carrots were hot, but very Very underdone. The potatoes too, were extremely hot, but very underdone indeed. Positives were, the Meals were nice, and the meat was delicious. But sadly, far too many negatives for me.

Waited ages and the pub wasn't busy. Tired decor, dirty tables. Nice view from upstairs

Just been for a light lunch with a friend. Friendly staff and food was excellent.

Summer was amazing! Super friendly and attentive without hovering. She gave great menu suggestions and made sure we had everything we needed throughout the meal. She really made our experience memorable. Highly recommend asking for her if you’re at The Churchillian she’ll take great care of you!

Had a lovely roast dinner, Steve managed to find us a table. Jay was so also lovely and made sure we were looked after too.

I recently visited the Churchillian pub in Cosham and had a fantastic experience. The food was excellent, and my two elderly relatives thoroughly enjoyed their meals as I did too. The ambience was warm and welcoming, creating a perfect dining atmosphere. Our server, Jay, was particularly excellent, he provided detailed explanations of the menu and ensured everyone was happy throughout our visit. The staff seemed genuinely happy, which added to the positive vibe. We will definitely be back again soon!

We had a super dining experience at the Churchillian in Cosham! The food was really scrumptious, with a great variety of options that were cooked just right and full of flavour. The view from the pub is unbeatable, adding to the fantastic atmosphere. Our server, Jay, was outstanding, attentive, friendly, and made sure we had everything we needed. Jay’s service truly elevated our experience. Highly recommend this pub for anyone looking for great food, a lovely setting, and top-notch service!

Unfortunately the kitchen brigade let the rest of the staff down. Better training or management needed. Undercooked and poorly presented vegetables spoilt what was otherwise a nice meal.

I had a wonderful time at the Churchillian in Cosham with my family. The ribeye steak was absolutely delicious cooked just right, tender, and full of flavor. The food overall was excellent, and everyone enjoyed their meals. Our server, Jay, was attentive, friendly, and went above and beyond to ensure we were having a great experience. The pub was clean, tidy, and had a warm, inviting atmosphere. We left feeling very satisfied and will definitely be coming back again!

Had a fantastic time here with our family & dog. Great food, great service from Scott & Will, amazing views aswell with plenty of window tables. Will definitely be booking to come back

Ran out of a lot of food on menu

I recently visited the Churchillian in Cosham with my family, and we had a fantastic experience. The lamb shank was absolutely delicious, cooked to perfection with tender meat that fell off the bone. The food overall was excellent, with everyone enjoying their meals. Our server, Will, was attentive, friendly, and went above and beyond to ensure we had everything we needed. The pub itself was tidy, clean, and had a welcoming atmosphere. Definitely a place I’d recommend for a great dining experience!

We had a couple of drinks and a light lunch.The food was excellent, as was the service.

We asked if we could book for 10 ppl in 2 days time was told they probably wouldn't have enough food!!!
