Went for my husband birthday. There was 6 of us. Stood for 5 minutes before anyone came to ask us for our name, the table was pointed out to us, after sitting for about 10 minutes we discovered that we had to order on the App, at this point we found out we couldn’t order the shared roast, daughter went to the bar to ask why? Got told they didn’t have enough meat for it, BUT they had enough to do 4 Trio meats🤷‍♀️if we had done this we would have had to order the extra sides that we wanted at extra cost to us these came as part of the shared meal. We had sat at the table for over half an hour without any staff asking if we were ok and needed help. We ended up walking out with out ordering. So guessing the only thing they are short of is customer service, I would not recommend this place to anyone.

DONT BOOK THE FUNCTION ROOM. Sadly, the occasion was a Wake. This was held upstairs, and 2 elderly friends were unable to even find the energy to ask if there were a Lift for them to travel upstairs. That, I must admit, set me against the venue. It was very chilly. The chairs were so flimsy, I'm amazed nobody fell through them. But before I found one that was safe, I went to the coffee area. I wish I had taken a photo of the 2 spoons, a damp jar of unspecified coffee and some Tea bags, and a chrome bin with a felt tip statement to place rubbish here sat on the table. The food was absolutely awful. The worst. Dried bits of bread with unidentifiable and ungenerous fillings, a DISGUSTING cocktail sausage, cold chips. Just inedible. As I drank my coffee, someone swooped to the table and removed the saucer. The building itself looks shoddy, and I would be embarrassed to work there, let alone invite a friend to lunch. Simply terrible. I hope somebody can rescue this pub from its inevitable fate. With the astounding location, what a brilliant place to be, until you get inside.

I booked the upstairs function room for a surprise party for my wife's birthday. The room comfortably held 40-50 guests, with room for the buffet, a DJ and the dance floor. Dedicated bar staff were on hand for the entirety of the event, with Lauren as our main server. Lauren deserves special mention, as she absolutely went above and beyond in looking after us, including helping my daughters with some of the setting up (they went a bit crazy on the balloons, so it took longer than they anticipated). Thank you Lauren! Setting up was a bit more stressful than perhaps it needed to be as between me signing the contract and being told that there was no prior booking that day so we could get in from 1530 for a 1830 start, and the actual day of the event, a prior booking was made and it was until 1700. Not complaining about that, but the Manager (Duty Manager?) got a bit shirty with my daughters (strangely not to me 🤔) and stated that we were told 1700... which is weird, as I'd never seen that individual before, and I was told 1530 to my face. I completely understand that another booking had come in, so merely point out that the management team, when "managing" the booking, perhaps could have communicated with the customer more clearly. To fair, after being asked if there was somewhere else that could be used for blowing up the balloons, a back room was offered. I paid for the Deluxe Buffet, and I liked it, though it didn't really cover some of the fussier eaters, and that's something I never thought about beforehand, to be honest. My youngest daughter was a bit miffed about the lack of the advertised "Mini King Prawn Cocktail". I also had to ask a few times, from the first enquiry in person, for the buffet options, then received them 3 days before the last opportunity to order, then an email the following day with a reminder... I work in an environment where I don't have access to personal electronic devices for the majority of the working day, and didn't actually look at any of my emails until just after the deadline had passed, but Heidi reopened the booking form when I pointed out my dilemma... very helpful. Overall, would I recommend The Churchillian as a venue for a party? Yes. Would I recommend without the ability for almost constant 2-way communications? No, absolutely not.

Had the wake for partner’s mum, Joan Johnson, at lunchtime on 14th February. We booked the Sandwich menu from the Buffet Menu. Orderd 5 meals, 2 roast dinners were disgusting, meat was dried out and both had hairs in. This was probably because the waitress was playing with customers dogs in between serving. Nothing against dogs as we had ours under the table but do not think it is hygienic for waiting staff to be handling dogs and food. Roast potatoes looked frozen and of poor quality, and the cauliflower cheese looked like dried out babyfood. Pasta parcels were mostly empty and stuck together. I see this as a blessing now considering the quality of the food and the sauce resembled a non branded over sweet tomato soup. Pigs in blankets were burnt and served in a child's beaker. 2 kids meals were ok. 2 plates of food were left untouched and we left rapidly. Hoping not to feel ill over night. Avoid at all cost. Used to be a lovely place 15 years ago but went down hill a bit, thought we would try again and can honestly say the worsed meal we have had out and would never return.

Lovely place and setting, staff very helpful and friendly. It was very busy and the staff looked overrun and our food took an hour to arrive. We were kindly offered a free round of drinks by a very helpful staff member. I had the Caesar salad which regrettably was below par, they must have run out of chicken as it had thin scraps of shredded chicken that they must have taken the last bits from a chicken carcass. It was over run with anchovies (probably to make up for the lack of chicken). At £13 I expected better. This is a nice place to have a drink but this is not the first time that we have been underwhelmed by the food, especially at the high cost. Maybe they could learn a lesson or two from Wetherspoons. Such a shame, I wish they would get the food right as this a great venue.

We used the upstairs private hire function room for a Celebration of Life event for our father. The room has fabulous daytime views out over Portsmouth and its harbour, Hayling Island and in the distance the Isle of Wight. The facilities were excellent with a bar for hot, cold and alcoholic drinks, several round tables with high backed dining chairs, large side table for food , toilets and an overhead projector with silver screen for whatever you might want to show. Our buffet was excellent and generously portioned. Overall I would be very happy to recommend 👍

Have eaten here multiple times and had really good experiences. However tonight was a different experience we booked in and arrived for 1900, ordered drinks and starters whist deciding on our mains. Unfortunately (although sill available to order) my starter was unavailable and was replaced with another item. We then placed an order for mains only to be told that the kitchen had closed just after 1930. There was no point in the booking process or on arrival where we were informed about the kitchen closing before 2100 as stated online. After announcing our views on the situation they were then able to make our mains. To conclude, although the floor staff did try to rectify all issues at hand as quickly as possible and politely, it was rather disappointing to be told the kitchen was closed just half an hour after our booking started. I hope that this was a fluke and our next visit will run more smoothly.

Waiter came over after several minutes and took drinks orders, but we wouldn't let him go...as we'd all decided on a roast. This far. Everything perfect. 40 minutes later, my wife had enquired about an approximate time for service, as we had 2 young children under 8..and they were naturally hungry. 5 mins we was told. And slightly more than 5 mins out food had arrived. Perfect. The waiter asked us if we needed extra potatoes... Yorkshire puddings or carrots etc. Yes Yes Yes please. By the time our meal was more or less finished, the additions arrived. However. The carrots were hot, but very Very underdone. The potatoes too, were extremely hot, but very underdone indeed. Positives were, the Meals were nice, and the meat was delicious. But sadly, far too many negatives for me.

Can only imagine the 4 stars on here is for the view from the window ?! Everything inside was literally awful ! We had a table of 6 around 5:30pm on a Sunday. On arrival there were a few other tables seated, but not busy. Our table was filthy and not laid out with cutlery despite pre-booking. Then it just went from bad to worse. I’ll list a brief summary to save time reading ! - Menu had simple items unavailable eg; Hunters Chicken .. but they have no BBQ sauce. No seafood mains available - Starters were all microwaved and/or fried. Literally turned up looking like they’d been rescued from the bin of the last tables leftovers. “Side garnish” looked like grass. Asian slaw was .. I just don’t know. Chilli jam sausages are like dog food consistency jellied meat, again microwaved. - We ordered a selection of mains and nobody was spared except the person who ordered a burger ! - Pork roast was cold anyway and brought out whilst we were still eating starters, and nearly 15mins before anyone elses main, with no sides. We asked for a replacement to allow us to eat together and a warm meal for £14, which actually ended up being the same microwaved meal returned with gravy and red cabbage added to side as a “gesture” ?! (The plate was in fact boiling from microwave and we’d removed the crackling and marked the gravy from the original roast so we’d recognise its return) - Hunters chicken looked more like a slab of cheese with the same fries pictured in an earlier review on here. - 2 x pies were served with 4 carrots as a side and a huge space on the plate for maybe a potato ? .. but that never arrived. - Side of chips ordered to fill the plate space .. they never arrived, along with a coffee ordered at the same time .. both were on the bill. - Sweet potato & leek tortellini has the same chilli paste dog food sauce as the sausages we think ?! - Two sides of veg were so ‘microwavingly’ (my new word) dehydrated that we couldn’t tell what veg it actually was ?! This did actually become amusing in the end ?! First time I’ve ever refused to pay somewhere in my life, or anywhere in the world. The bill (no drinks) came to approx £125. I offered to pay £30 for the burger and tortellini but this was declined and we were made to pay £58 instead for our starters ?! Not sure on the logic here. Promised a call back to discuss our issues … have today chased and awaiting a call from head office apparently ?! Sept 2024 - fyi call back never received 😅 Either way, won’t be returning for even a drink. It’s such a shame as this pub has an incredible location and such an opportunity to thrive in that area.

Had a fantastic Sunday roast there today - definitely in my top ten in Portsmouth. The sticky toffee pudding was great also! The servers were friendly and accommodating to our dogs which made for a very positive atmosphere and great service. Thank you!

Came in for a Sunday Roast and thoroughly enjoyed everything the pub and the food had to offer. Staff were efficient and Will was super attentive. Unlimited Spuds, yorkshires and gravy. Best idea!! Keep up the good work Churchillian!

Use the Churchillian on many occasions. Pub doesn't seem to change in all the years that we have been going there. Although turnover of management seems to change on regular basis? Went there on this occasion for a meet and eat session. Food we found to be expensive for what you got. Service was rapid and atmosphere was ok. Still will use pub if in area.

Ordered drink on the app. 25 mins later after asking was told they had no knowledge of order. Money had been taken though. They then brought the drinks and disappeared. 2 of the 3 drinks were as ordered! I guess if it’s good enough for Meat Loaf it’s good enough for the Churchillian

Nice pub in prime location. Only issue I really found was that soft drinks were incredibly expensive. Example £2.60 for half a pint madri but £3.30 something for a diet coke!!! There is no need for my kids drinks to be more expensive than a lager. If that could get this cost down I'd be encouraged to go there more often.

I had a great time up at the Churchillian. We had a couple of rounds of drinks and I cannot fault the service, it was excellent. Stephen made sure that we had everything that we needed and that all members of our party were comfortable, including accessibility needs. I'd really recommend this as a spot for a nice drink and a bit of food with an excellent view of Portsmouth.

Visited this pub and stayed about 2 years ago, lovely rooms, great pub, cosy & inviting, great atmosphere and food. Visited pub this Easter weekend, well I was shocked! I assume changed hands as now run down and empty considering 8.30pm on Saturday evening. Not sure what it's meant to be but certainly didn't feel like a pub, more like a cross between a village hall and an Indian restaurant when you look at furniture. Place full of tables set for diners with mismatch metal chairs garden furniture and high back chairs from a restaurant, no comfortable sitting at all. Felt awkward sitting there for the 1 drink we had and they were already clearing bar to close for the night. Cold and clinical lighting and I won't mention the toilets! Disappointed visit and sad that the pub has lost its charm. Won't be visiting again plenty of other lovely pubs just a few 100 yards away.

Spent a fun Sunday afternoon here enjoying some drinks. It was very busy but the service was good. We didn’t eat but all the food looked good. Good music playing in the background and a great, lively atmosphere.

Had a takeaway on Monday night. The food was overcooked, overpriced and very bland. Used to be a good Chinese but gone downhill and I shall never use again

Pub real, gente estupenda, gran personal, mucha diversión. Reglas simples durante Covid, firmar en la puerta con el número de la mafia, lavarse las manos, ordenar, sentarse, ¡la cerveza llega en segundos! Incluso fuera de un gran pub.
