The Chippy in Portsmouth

Attended this chip shop on a Friday evening at 6pm. Like a ghost town, the bell on the counter is just for show. Got the attention of the server who was making sure their mobile phone was still operational. Two types of pies available, nothing else in the heater cabinets, no chips cooking. Ordered a large chips, a pie and a savaloy. Chip portion was massive but a mix of hot and barely warm offerings. Pie was warm but by no means hot. I didn't try the savaloy after watching the server walk around with it in her un-gloved hand before nuking it for 20 seconds. Achieved a food hygiene rating of 4 in May 2024, which sadly doesn't guarantee good food.

Food was great, good value, good portion sizes, would go back again.

Never again ! This was the worst fish I ve ever had , it was very thick and short, only warm in the middle, the batter was thin and burnt in places. Tasted horrible as did the larger battered sausage. The chips were actually Ok … this place has really gone down hill. The owners need to rethink how they are going to deliver tasty fresh food that local customers can rave about and rebuild its reputation. In the meantime I’m off to the one up the road. Shame .

Update 2024: after a previous bad experience I avoided the chicken (see below) and went for fish and chips. A much better experience. Well cooked chips (a little too pale in colour to be perfect but nice and crisp), reasonable fish although quite small for a “medium” size and the batter was a bit thick, soggy in places and stuck to the paper. Very friendly service and the food was cooked fresh to order. Medium cod, small chips and mushy peas cost £12.30. Previous review: I had the half chicken and chips. The chips weren’t bad but the pre-cooked reheated chicken was still freezing cold in the middle after being put in the fryer for a few minutes. Some staff training on basic food hygiene and temperature checks are clearly needed.

Ordered online went to collect at designated time shop wasn’t open they still took payment though I had no fish and chips very poor

This was an awful greasy pile of mush. The fish was dry and tough with a very thick layer of skin,batter was mushy and didn't stay on the fish and the chips were anemic and literally dripping in oil. Will not be returning here ever. I paid over £34 for our order.

Used them so many times and food was so inconsistent, sometimes ok and other times absolutely terrible. But recently every time I buy from chippy, food is absolutely delicious so hope so they will keep it that way, because so many times I told to myself that is the last time I'll buy anything from this place. Very good experience recently so I thought I'll leave positive review 🙂

The worse fish and chips ..chips were very greasy..not sure what the fish was and the batter was I dont now what ...waste of money ..gulls enjoyed it

Prices ok but Chips were over cooked and tasted like they had been reheated.

Chips were soggy, needed longer in the fryer although made up for it with the freshly cooked battered sausage which had a nice light crunch on the batter. Although did take a while to cook.

Great chips but they take 15 mins most times lol why on earth they don’t have things like this ready to go!

Heartbreaking to say this. And I hope the owners listen. I've had many a fantastic fish and chips here over the years. I'm assuming it's changed hands recently. But. Tonight guys what you doing serving nearly jet black battered fish? Clearly you haven't changed the oil for quite some time. But jet black fish? The chips on the other hand were DELICIOUS and generous. An easy 10 out of 10. Fortunately these were fried in a different vat/fryer. Fish though, wow SORT YOUR FAT PLEASE. Anyone knows the owners/lessees please please tell them because not only serving fish like that is disrespectful to their customers, even more will vote with their feet :/ All the best.

I hate to give a chippy a bad review as I know they're struggling and it's a shame to keep losing them but this chip shop wasn't that impressive. Chips were nice enough if a little greasy. Fish was a bit of a strange colour and the batter wasn't very nice. They offer a meal deal with medium cod, small chips and a drink but it's more expensive than if you ordered the individual items separately so that didn't make much sense. The Fisherman's kitchen on Palmerston road is better imo but maybe it was just a bad day here

Went to this place as was the only chippy in the area. Really generous portion size, couldn’t finish a large portion and the chips were really good, they were fresh and not greasy with decent crunchy bit and hot. Had to walk about 10mins to get back to the Accommodation and they were still hot. Sausage was okay, nothing special but what you would expect from a chip shop. Will go back again when next in the area.

Inedible chips, went straight into the bin. Honestly the worst chips we've ever had - rock hard and tasted like cardboard. Were clearly cooked a while ago and refried a few times. Also the guy serving picked up a sausage to serve with his bare fingers which is really unhygienic. Looking at reviews this isn't an isolated incident. Avoid! 🤮🤮

Just had the worst chips ever from this place. The chips are re-fried, which suggests they were cooked earlier in the day and then they refry only the amount of chips required per order. These were terrible. Never again from here.

Absolutely appalled by it being the only chippy in my area but absolutely shocked by the chips i just received stone cold and scraps. The audacity to charge £3 for small is beyond me. They keep changing hands and the service and quality has gone down hill. Doing a massive disservice to the community. Not going back if you paid me.

£30 for two ‘medium’ fish and chip set menus, and a portion of chicken nuggets for the kids. The most delicious tasting fish and chips we have had in a long time, and trust me, we have had fish and chips in an awful lot of seaside towns up and down the country. I was considering ordering the large portion, but the lad behind the counter said the medium portion was enough. I was sceptical at first, but the medium portion that came out could have feed 2 people easily. Later on, we visited the pier, where the same order would have cost us £10 extra for smaller portions. Well worth the 2 minute walk away from the sea front. I would highly recommend.

Had friends round brought 2 large chips, 1 cheese chips for dinner really nice food everyone enjoyed them.

I brought chips yesterday , that were sold to me completly cold and unfresh! After complaining guy said he can make some fresh one in 10mins. While i was waiting some Ladies came in and the guy tried to give those chips to them....but saw me looking 🤮. Terrible,my first and last time in there.

Very disappointed I spent nearly £70 for 5 cod and 2 chips for such a bad smelling food the oil used was disgusting and not giving you any extra salt . Not recommend

Had a really enjoyable 1/2 chicken and chips.

Really gone down hill 😔 fish was awful and I think they got to over cooked, chips horrible and generally this was poor! Service also slow! Only one person there waiting! Took 25 mins

Just ordered fish and chips. Tiny fish for £9 Chips tasted of old chip oil and were raw in the middle. Will go elsewhere in future. Awful food and waste of money. Was much better when previous owners were there.

We stopped here to grab some sausage and chips to take and sit on the beach. The chips were so greasy and the sausage in batter was half covered in batter. Staff were friendly. Hopefully the food was a one off. Its very close to the beach and there are places to park close by. Service was a little slow but there was 4 people in the queue with large orders.

One of the choicest chippies in Southsea or Portsmouth, and witin 5 mins walk from the beech, without beach prices.

Very happy with my experince there was a lovely young lady working behind the counter her name was Shannon or Sharon I think , very polite and very friendly asked about our day how we had been and asked if we was up to anything nice in the evening other customers come in and she asked them the same thing very very polite , defiantly will be back agian , our chips and fish was cooked well and very tasty even had a cheeky batterd sausage without my misses knowing and that was lovely too Will be back agian thank you ☺️

Popped in this evening (Sunday) for some takeaway chips. Staff were really friendly and welcoming. Chips were fresh, piping hot and delicious. Would definitely pop in again.

You will be hard pressed to find a better chippy. The chips are hand cut on the premises and delicious. We had fish and chips. Good portion size. Staff are extremely friendly. A real find!

This is supposedly a 'large' chips... really disappointed with the size and they were cold too. Batter was nice and fish was okay but quite a lot of skin left on. Not great, probably won't go here again as we know we can get more for our money elsewhere.

I have always praised the Chippy's fish & especially the chips but I'm sorry to say today I had cod & chips that was just awfull,I just picked at it then ditched it,it's left a greasy taste in my mouth.

Chips were gorgeous,fish cakes and curry sauce ok and hot,but sadly after 15yrs of coming here the cod was awful saturated in oil,stuck to the paper and broke into peices trying to remove it tasted awful,hardly any batter on it..has this shop changed ownership?...very expensive for awful fish,sadly won't be coming back.

Part two Not as good now it's been taken over, nice blonde on front counter. But the large cod looked like something from Iceland. Have never had an oblong piece of fish before. Strange 🤔

17/01/22 update - Return visit. Excellent fish & chips served by pleasant staff. Enjoyed on the seafront on a gloriously sunny winter's day 40-mile round trip based on previous reviews. Nice chips & plenty of them. Tasty fish however only three stars as the batter was slightly undercooked resulting in all being stuck to the wrapping paper and inedible. Wish I'd had my phone to take a photo. 21/11/22 update - Went on a Monday, website shows as open from midday - closed & shuttered. Not sure if it's closed down?

Always been the best fish and chips in portsmouth and still doing it year after year. Service brilliant to really friendly and always a 'good evenin'" when you leave.

Don't know if it's changed hands or not but not as good as wasa couple of years ago Shame I thought it was the best chip shop around .

I've bought here several times, but now I got the worst fish so far. The fish was scaly and the batter was thick and uncooked.

Well been at sea side and fish and chips and cross this one shop and I wasn’t what I was expecting a bit disappointed in the taste of the fish very bland the butter in the fish wasn’t that great. I have to put 2 stars because this place was much better years ago… I order the cod bites and they were terrible, almost without any fish inside a very poor fry. Chips were good tho…

Two weeks ago, the chips tasted five stars. Only one today. Taste of boiled, fried potatoes. For the cook's message: a good chip is fried twice. Light yellow at lower temperatures and dark golden when the customer arrives at higher temperatures. This ensures that it is crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside.

Place is seriously dirty Needs a visit from the council

This used to be a good reliable chip shop but the chips have gone right downhill. Like microwave chips now. Portion size seems to have tightened also. Disappointed and left hungry.

We tried the fish an chips here because it had a high rating... it was a mistake. The chips tasted like they had been cooked in the microwave and the fish batter tasted like it had gone 3 rounds with a washing up liquid bottle... Maybe that also explains the bones that I was picking out of the fish? Fortunately the seagulls loved it... 1/5 - Good place to get food for seagulls. The 1 star I am giving this is for the service as the girl in there was friendly.

I’m working in Portsmouth for a few weeks and I thought I’d find a chippy and I found this place, I ordered cod and chips and it was really tasty as and the fish was freshly cooked. I will be back 👍🏻👍🏻

4 stars for super nice lovely service and now to a food. Sadly long time ago I discovered that Brits have no taste, and calling average and common food super delicious as long as it's a lot. It's average, chips are as good as in other fish and chips shops, wanna Haddock (folks Haddock after freezing always keeping that fish flavour, cod will only taste with grease - so pray for fresh one, not old and burned), they didn't have, so I go with Cod. And honestly, it is not bad, but it's just average, but a price to size ratio making it a great deal. Average/common thing can have max 3 stars, for price.to size ratio and really lovely nice front lady 4 stars. Well done!

Fish batter was soggy and yellow the fish inside was a grey colour, looked old. Even the cat wouldn't eat it. Defo not recommend.

Fresh fish, the best batter I ever tried and nice chips. Extra large cod was gigantic. It was my first time in Portsmouth Historic Dock yard with children and Family. I found the Chippy on google and had a picnic on the beach. Great find

One of the best fish & chips shops in Southsea. Fish is cooked to oder to perfection and is delicious! The chips are proper! Nice a crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The food is very fearly priced. Finally the staff is always friendly and very helpful, I can tell they care. I can't fault this place. I highly recommend. Keep up the great work. Thanks

Best chip shop ive ever been to. Coming from london, you begin go appreciate a good traditional chippy when you see one. I got chips, saveloy n sausage n batter. The chips were top tier. Lovely crispyness to em, the salt didnt run off nor did the vinegar make em too soggy. The saveloy tasted soo good almost like it had a pinch of paprika. 10/10 for me. My wife said it was the cleanest chippy shes ever seen which is a good shout. Couldnt believe it went there at about 11.30 and they were already up and running.

That chippy, what can I say about the best chips in southsea, also the staff are pretty friendly,the fish there and it's fish not just old masses of batter, and for the chips they always give way to many, that's probably why the sea Gulls are pretty big ugly bruts circling over head like giant teradactals,or vultures of chippy culture lol

For just over 7 pounds, I had medium cod and chips. Cooked fresh, when the young lady handed me my two sporks and dinner, I could NOT believe the weight of the fish and chips. It must've been close to a kilo and took half an hour to eat as I watched the sun submerge into the sea over Gosport, espying from a grass seat by the bandstand along the lovely seafront. Bargain! Brilliant!

Amazing fish & chips, a traditional chippy, freshly cooked and piping hot and it's only about a 3-5 minute walk from the seafront. If I'm back in the area I'll definitely be heading back.

Chips tasted fine but cod not great at all sadly. Reviews of this place are generally good so may have been a one off. Will stick to Deep Blue down the road as it's solidly consistent.
